What a gem!!! I'm a 49 year old foodie and I absolutely loved this place. The food was fantastic! I had my wife and 2 of our boys. The food also came out remarkably fast, which pleased our "starving" sons. We shared 3 entrees: pad Thai w/ shrimp, drunken noodles w/ chicken, and broccoli w/ beef. All 3 dishes were fantastic, we couldn't decide which we liked most. We will definitely stop there again if we travel through Vandalia. read more

I ordered the beef salad. The veggies were not fresh, the beef was mealy and there was no flavor to speak of. My husband had the Penang curry which was decent. Unfortunately, all the benches all reeked of mildew, which was in the stuffing, because if you moved at all it would puff up and into your nose. We had an amazingly authentic dinner. We went on a Monday night and were they only patrons. Service was prompt and as soon as we ordered we heard the chef get to work. Plates came out as they were ready. Everything was fresh prepared. I hesitated on ordering the $9 wonton soup but my husband insisted. And boy was he was right it was worth every penny of the $9!!!! Baan Thai is a real gem in a cute little town, Vandalia, IL. The owner and staff are very nice and friendly. Their food is cooked at the perfect level. This place serves authentic delicious Thai food. The prices are relatively inexpensive compared to other Asian restaurants. Even though the ingredients and inflation are real these days, but this place prices their food at a reasonable level. I will definitely come back again. read more

We were driving on I-70 and found this restaurant on Google just at the right time to pull off the highway about a mile -ish into Vandalia where this place is tucked into the Main Street strip. The place is clean and it seems like a family operation. We all enjoyed our meals and appetizers-my favorite app being the fresh spring rolls with crushed peanut sauce-best I've ever had. We shared meals - Pad Thai, Pad Basil, Red Curry, Bhotam Keab and the chef made a special allergen sensitive dish for a person in our group that has dietary restrictions. All dishes were fantastic with fresh ingredients and just the right amount of spice per how we ordered. They pay attention to detail here. I think we were better served here at this family-owned restaurant in this small town than any Thai restaurant we've been to in big cities. The chef (maybe owner?) came out frequently to check on us and she was so accommodating. We make the trek from Kansas to Ohio and back every year--I hope this place does well so we can come back. Both were fresh and tasted good. For our main course we had pork fried rice and pad ginger with beef. Overall pretty good. We had the eggs rolls - nice and crispy; chicken satay with a delicious peanut sauce; Pad Basil and Pad Broccoli - both with delicious sauces and crisp, colorful vegetables. Dishes were plentiful and served with white rice. There appeared to be just 2 people working, one serving and one cooking. Amazed at how quickly our food came after ordering. Umm the best Thai food I've had in years. The sweet owner/chef said: "Not bad for a small town restaurant, right?" The ginger beef was good, but we got take out, and the sauce had spilled all over the bag and had created a pool at the bottom of it, soaking all the napkins. Dishes that are liquify should be put in a plastic sealing container, not a styrofoam latch lid. Super irritating. read more

My boyfriend and I were looking for a place to eat for Valentine's Day dinner and he found this restaurant.we went there last night and as we walked in, we felt that authentic Asian ambience. We were greeted by this young Asian guy and told us to freely pick our seats. The young Asian guy took our appetizer order of pot stickers and khan jeab. They were delish! My boyfriend and I liked the soy sauce dip with slices of lemon grass in it. Then this Thai lady came to us with the menu and I asked her about the difference between Seafood Basil and another seafood dish and I ordered Seafood Basil and my sweet boyfriend ordered Shrimp Pad Pea Pod. This place is well worth the little detour from the interstate. We stopped on our way from Indianapolis to St. Louis. Outstanding food and they were understanding of my very active toddler and even brought him ice cream! We had tofu drunken noodles, crispy spring rolls, egg pad se ew, and chicken fried rice. My husband was raving about the crispy spring rolls, and the egg fried rice was especially delicious. We all really enjoyed our meals. Bonus was the caboose just around the corner from the restaurant that my toddler enjoyed playing on to get out some energy. read more

My Dad and I stopped here on our road trip to New York and I'm so glad that we did. I've eaten a lot of Thai food in my day and this had to be some of the best. We shared a plate of mixed vegetables and I had the pad basil, while my Dad had the tom yum koong. It was all so flavorful. What a pleasant surprise! I am from Vandalia and my parents have talked about this place a few times. They wasted no time making sure that we ate there when I was home for the holidays. We ordered Pad Thai, Crab Rangoon, Cashew Chicken and Egg Rolls. All of the orders came out fresh and delicious. Located on the Main Street of downtown Vandalia, just west of the Old Capital State House building (a must see if you are in town - it served as the state house during the first few years of Abraham Lincoln's presidency). The owners are really nice and we hear the Coconut Cream pie is made completely from scratch. I will be making sure that I stop in next time to find out for myself. read more

Let me tell you the reasons I love this place-the owner/main cook is lovely. Always going above and beyond to accommodate. Fresh spring rolls are amazing. The best way to describe them is a salad wrap bursting with flavors of mint and cilantro. Sounds weird but I can't get enough of them! Everything I have tried here is great. (Chicken Pad Thai, Cashew Chicken, Pad Basil) Service is friendly and usually pretty quick to get food. This place is absolutely phenomenal! I don't live in the area but I always make sure to stop whenever I'm traveling through. As someone that visited Thailand, this food is as authentic as it gets. The staff are so nice and helpful when deciding between various menu options. My favorite meal is Chicken Massaman with the Thai dumpling appetizer, which I always recommend to friends when they travel through the area. I wish I lived nearby so I could become a regular!
