Ordered Fajitas... tasted like they were reheated & no seasoning, asked for fried jalapeños, they were NOT spicy at all. This is definitely not very Mexican approved... service was okay took way too long brought out fajitas then tortillas after the fajitas warm barely warm. Ambiance was weird also everyone was so surprised to see a MEXICAN LOL unless it is a racist town still left a $10 tip since waitress was okay read more

Good food and good service! Employees were really attentive. They brought out complimentary chips and salsa. I had some of the juiciest chicken fajitas! Had the perfect amount of flavor. Their piña colada was also great. If you love authentic Mexican food, come here!! My hubby had steak tacos and also enjoyed his meal! read more

We stopped here on our way to St. Louis. It's a small mom and pop place. The workers were friendly and the service was good. We ordered steak tacos, chicken tacos, fish taco, and a beef tamale. They give you free chips and salsa. The food came out hot and fresh. Sadly, the tacos and the salsa were bland. The beef tamale was good. It had refried beans and red sauce on top. We usually love Mexican food, but this one was not the greatest. read more

The food we ordered was great and came out timely. The Cazeulada was incredible truly. The service was good as well. A bit of a hole in the wall but right next to the exit off the highway and a restaurant I'll be sure to visit again! read more

Traveled to Vandalia from Las Vegas. I have been here for a few days. Day 3 I stopped in to try the food here at Rancho Nuevo. Great food! Being of Mexican descent, I appreciate food that reminds me of the meals my grandfather made. This is it. Stop in, have a cold beer, and let the food take you to your happy place. We wanted a break from fast food and found this local, Mexican Restaurant in Vandalia, IL. It's just off the interstate. Prices are very reasonable and food is very good. My tacos were delicious and the burrito my Bf had for dinner had no complaints. We were there for about 30-45 min total and our dinner was cooked perfect. We hope to make this our yearly spot for dinner as we travel through. read more

We just moved to this area and was asking for recommendations from friends and Rancho Nuevo made the list so we thought we would stop for lunch today (Monday). I ordered the lunch chimichanga special and she got the chicken enchiladas. I wanted to try a sample of the chicken tortilla soup so I asked the waiter and he said sure. The server brought ship and salsa and our drinks. The chips were very fresh and crispy with the right amount of salt and the salsa was very good. Next came the soup sample. Actually it was a full size serving! Unfortunately I didn't get a photo of it. I think I was so shocked by the size of the sample that I forgot all about it. Bottom line - this was one of the best chicken tortilla soups I have ever tasted! Next came the entree's. My chimichanga was stuffed with chicken peppers and onions and lightly fried but very good. Her enchiladas we great she said as well. I couldn't finish mine so I took a box with what was left home for later. Definitely coming back soon. Next time I'll start with the margarita special and a bowl of soup and remember to take photos! If you are traveling down interstate 70 or US 51 stop and give the soup a try. I would love to hear what you have to say about Rancho Nuevo. UPDATE 8/7/20: They are no longer serving the chicken tortilla soup. Not sure if they will offer it again or not. If you go ask for it and if enough people do I'm sure they will bring it back. It was awesome! read more

The service is fast and always friendly ! The food is very good my favorite is Chicken and veggies on a bed of rice covered with the cheese sauce. It is so very good! The salsa is very good also. Never leave this place hungry ! read more

Stopped on my way to Denver mostly because of the reviews. I really enjoy small hole in the wall type restaurants while traveling because they always have different foods that you just don't find in mainstream restaurants. This place was disappointing to say the least. Drink selection was very limited, salsa was very bland, and food was a average at best. The diner itself was very small and not set up well which was not comfortable at all. Sharing my experience take it for what it's worth. read more

The food is spectacular. We had Chicken enchiladas suissa. Yum yum. Delish hot salsa and mild salsa. Fast friendly service even though they were busy. The restaurant is so clean, the walls, decorations, not a sign of dust! Bathrooms are spotless. I can't think of any more good things to say. EXCELLENT everything!!!! read more

I ordered shrimp tacos a la cart, side of beans and avocado. I'll be back. Specifically for the shrimp tacos. Bathroom was clean enough. Feels like all locals in this easy stop on the side on the side of the road. Sign says they're hiring, just like everyone else during the pandemic, but you couldn't tell. Good service. read more

My family loved it! We made a last minute decision to stop during our NJ - Arkansas trip, looking for a change from fast food but worried that a sit-down meal would take too long. Full parking lot, tiny restaurant and yet it was still fast, with great service and great food. A basket of chips, salsa and tall water tamed my teenager until we got our food which was quick and delicious authentic Mexican food. My other super picky eater was very happy with chicken fingers and fries. If we hadn't been on a long drive, the cervesas would have completed a perfect meal. Well run, attentive manager, and great waitress. Soccer on tv, and fun family atmosphere. Clean bathrooms. read more

Lives up to its 4.5 star reviews. Great chips an margaritas and a large menu with great food.

This place may not look like anything spectacular, but wow, the food is phenomenal! I had the burrito fajita grande, and would easily recommend it to anyone. The delicious fresh chips made it an easy wait for my twelve inch burrito stuffed with chicken, beef, chorizo, peppers, tomatoes, and onions, all underneath a layer of white melted cheese sauce. Everything had such great flavor! I would strongly recommend this place to anyone and I will most certainly be stopping again to try something else off the menu the next time I pass through. read more

Delicious! Stopped in in the way back from the eclipse, and so glad we did! (The place was really busy with other travelers, as well as locals, and the staff really hustled. Kudos to them for great service during a packed house!) The food was excellent! Not just your regular fare. I had the pollo a la Mexicans, and it was wonderful. Just the right amounts of cilantro, jalapeño and cheese to accent the chicken, without overwhelming it. My hubby had the pineapple fajitas. Also delicious. They were sold out of fish, but have several fish dishes on the menu that sounded good. Sold out must be a good sign! Good salsa and chips, too. Didn't try the margaritas this time, but they looked good. We'll come back to try them next time! read more

If you're a woman traveling alone looking for some awkward table talk with your server and the busboy while you try and order (a microwaved(!) quesadilla, then by all means, make this little establishment your destination when a midwestern thunderstorm threatens your life while driving cross-country on I-70. If you're like me, you'll wind up ordering the same thing three times, to two different people, making up a boyfriend (which won't matter anyway)while they take turns asking: -where your boyfriend is? -why you don't sleep here tonight? -if they can bring you a (giant) margarita so you have to sleep here tonight. -a slew of increasingly personal questions. After 17 hours of driving, it really was a bit of comic relief, and after 15 minutes of waiting for my quesadilla (presumably the time they thought it would take to get me to stay in the middle of nowhere Illinois for the night), I was grateful for ordering my food to go. I give them one star for delicious, homemade chips and another for entertainment. read more
