We stopped here on our way to St. Louis. It's a small mom and pop place. The workers were friendly and the service was good. We ordered steak tacos, chicken tacos, fish taco, and a beef tamale. They give you free chips and salsa. The food came out hot and fresh. Sadly, the tacos and the salsa were bland. The beef tamale was good. It had refried beans and red sauce on top. My tacos were delicious and the burrito my Bf had for dinner had no complaints. We were there for about 30-45 min total and our dinner was cooked perfect. We just moved to this area and was asking for recommendations from friends and Rancho Nuevo made the list so we thought we would stop for lunch today (Monday). I ordered the lunch chimichanga special and she got the chicken enchiladas. I wanted to try a sample of the chicken tortilla soup so I asked the waiter and he said sure. The server brought ship and salsa and our drinks. The chips were very fresh and crispy with the right amount of salt and the salsa was very good. Next came the soup sample. Actually it was a full size serving! Unfortunately I didn't get a photo of it. I think I was so shocked by the size of the sample that I forgot all about it. Bottom line - this was one of the best chicken tortilla soups I have ever tasted! Next came the entree's. My chimichanga was stuffed with chicken peppers and onions and lightly fried but very good. Her enchiladas we great she said as well. I couldn't finish mine so I took a box with what was left home for later. Definitely coming back soon. Next time I'll start with the margarita special and a bowl of soup and remember to take photos! If you are traveling down interstate 70 or US 51 stop and give the soup a try. I would love to hear what you have to say about Rancho Nuevo. UPDATE 8/7/20: They are no longer serving the chicken tortilla soup. Not sure if they will offer it again or not. Stopped on my way to Denver mostly because of the reviews. I really enjoy small hole in the wall type restaurants while traveling because they always have different foods that you just don't find in mainstream restaurants. This place was disappointing to say the least. Drink selection was very limited, salsa was very bland, and food was a average at best. My family loved it! We made a last minute decision to stop during our NJ - Arkansas trip, looking for a change from fast food but worried that a sit-down meal would take too long. Full parking lot, tiny restaurant and yet it was still fast, with great service and great food. A basket of chips, salsa and tall water tamed my teenager until we got our food which was quick and delicious authentic Mexican food. My other super picky eater was very happy with chicken fingers and fries. If we hadn't been on a long drive, the cervesas would have completed a perfect meal. This place may not look like anything spectacular, but wow, the food is phenomenal! I had the burrito fajita grande, and would easily recommend it to anyone. The delicious fresh chips made it an easy wait for my twelve inch burrito stuffed with chicken, beef, chorizo, peppers, tomatoes, and onions, all underneath a layer of white melted cheese sauce. Everything had such great flavor! Kudos to them for great service during a packed house!) The food was excellent! Not just your regular fare. I had the pollo a la Mexicans, and it was wonderful. Just the right amounts of cilantro, jalapeño and cheese to accent the chicken, without overwhelming it. My hubby had the pineapple fajitas. Also delicious. They were sold out of fish, but have several fish dishes on the menu that sounded good. Sold out must be a good sign! Good salsa and chips, too. If you're like me, you'll wind up ordering the same thing three times, to two different people, making up a boyfriend (which won't matter anyway)while they take turns asking: -where your boyfriend is? -why you don't sleep here tonight? -if they can bring you a (giant) margarita so you have to sleep here tonight. -a slew of increasingly personal questions. After 17 hours of driving, it really was a bit of comic relief, and after 15 minutes of waiting for my quesadilla (presumably the time they thought it would take to get me to stay in the middle of nowhere Illinois for the night), I was grateful for ordering my food to go.
