    Barria tacos and a tamale
    R. M.

Great Mexican food, everything was fast and fresh, the refried beans had a slight Smokey chipotle flavor, my wife's Tamale was delicious and both of us we extremely satisfied with the flavor of our meals... 5 stars!

This decent Mexican restaurant is just a short walk across the road from the Loves truck stop, and I have came over here a half dozen times over the last few years. I always seem to get the same thing. The create your own combo that I order as taco, burrito, and chili relleno. It's always above average, but tonight was even better. Cook must be on his game tonight. The chips are pretty good, but the salsa isn't so great. Beans and rice ate better than most places. Iced tea is very good. Service is always very good, and the place is always clean. Would definitely recommend this place.

First we had to walk past dirty tables to find a clean one. This is inexcusable in an empty restaurant. If they cannot be bothering to clean the tables, what do you think the kitchen looks like? Not 100% horrible as nothing seemed rotten but the best thing I can say is that I didn't get food poisoning. I have had way way better. At Taco Bell I've had WAY better. Hubs said his margarita was not very good as well which is always a bad sign. Fast service but totally flavorless food. Taco Bell across the street could give their "chef" lessons on using spices other than grease puddle my "Steak Mexicano" was swimming in. The waitress said it was marinated but if it was then it needs lots more time since it was neither flavorful NOR tender. It was tiny cubes of some tough, chewy, tasteless commercial grade of beef? fried in a large amount of grease with diced green bell peppers and onions coupled with chunks of way underripe tomato that was barely pink and tasted like cardboard. It was a colossal pain in the ass just to get a bite of food on the fork since it was so finely diced. I even had to add salt which I never do--especially considering how much I complain about over-salted food. The refried beans were soupy and flavorless without any discernible seasoning. The rice was the best thing on the plate and it was WAY below the standards being set by the Taco Bell across the street. Taco Bell is head and shoulders over this place as far as flavor and quality go, even as mediocre as Taco Bell food usually is. I was shocked that they have a sister restaurant in Vandalia since this one was SO Godawful MEDIOCRE. I wouldn't bother to come back. It was a bland and entirely forgettable meal. Want GOOD Mexican? Go somewhere else. ANYWHERE ELSE!! These people have no concept of seasoning or food prep of Mexican food. Old El Paso from a can is head and shoulders over the slop here. Even the "salsa" was awful--it tasted like cheap tomato sauce and a bit of cilantro. Spicy Ketchup is fine cuisine compared to this "salsa". One of the most memorably TERRIBLE meals I've had in years. I can't believe this is their second store, even in very rural Illinois people can't possibly think this is Mexican cuisine.

You wouldn't expect great Mexican food from a small town but this is better than every St.Louis Mexican restaurant.

I had a 2 meat platter, pulled pork & shrimp with mac & cheese & baked beans, wife had wings. To say were impressed in an understatement, the food was fresh, which that early we weren't expecting fresh but hoping for it since most BBQ places at that hour serve yesterday's leftovers warmed in a microwave but NOT HERE! The staff was welcoming and patient while explaining the menu to us. Service was just as good as the food, it seemed everyone was in a good mood and that goes straight back to management. As soon as we walked in, the smell was incredible and definitely made us excited to eat. The setup was easy--you order first, find a seat, and they bring the food out to you. Service was quick, and everyone was friendly and helpful. We ordered the platters, which came with one meat and two sides. The food had good flavor, and the cucumber salad was especially fresh and really excellent. The only downside was that the meat portions felt pretty small for the price, which was a little disappointing. Overall, it was a good stop to try once, but probably not a place we'd go out of our way to return to.

My research brought me here to Pappy's. I'm very glad it did. Ambiance starts with a line out the door, literally. You slowly shuffle down a long hallway full of Pappy's memorabilia. Then you make it to the ordering counter, order, and find a table. The dining room is huge, plenty of tables, with a full complement of sauces on each table. The service people at the counter were friendly, and so were the people delivering the food. The food came out quick and hot and delicious. We had baked beans and potato salad for sides, and they were pretty solid. Nothing show-stealing, but no complaints about them whatsoever. And of course, we got the ribs. Tender, juicy, a nice bite and chew, a decent bark, just a really wonderful rib. Better than any St. Louis style rib I've ever had back home in Florida. Other states, hard to say, the jury's out, but in that moment, I was eating a five-star rib. So good. We also got a 1/4 pound of the Burnt Ends. Usually, burnt ends are the king of meats, but I think we've entered the phase of America, where they're just another variety of meat and not necessarily upper echelon anymore. That being said, these were pretty ok. Should have gotten more ribs. Overall, Pappy's was pretty wow. Great local spot with a lot of pride and history, excellent ribs, I will definitely try to come back next time I'm in town.

It's not hard to see why The Food Network rated Pappy's as the "#1 rib joint in the country", as this place is next level bbq. You can smell the bbq from down the street and it will instantly make you hungry, even if you just ate... The place has the "cool bbq joint vibes", the employees are ultra-friendly, and it's fair/reasonable priced based on the quality of the food (runs between $40-50 for two people). Strongly recommend getting ribs, but their smoked chicken and turkey are outstanding as well. I didn't love their original bbq sauce (it was too thick and sweet with a heavy molasses flavor), but the hoodoo spicy sauce was out of this world. I would put Pappy's up against some of the other big named bbq joints in the country and they'd hold their own... Definitely worth the stop when in STL.

Road snack! Pit stop for BBQ right off the highway. Wish I could be more enthused…read more We pulled in around lunch time, there were a couple of people seated. To the left of the door was a window opening to the back with a woman standing there with a baby on her hip, we were looking around to see where to go and she let us know to head to the second window to the back. Upon arriving at the second window, there was a young man standing there. He didn't greet us, didn't smile, just stood there. I indicated it was our first time in and asked a question about the menu, he responded with the answer and then just continued to stand there. I was very uncomfortable so just ordered a sampler with nothing else. For the three options, i chose pulled pork, brisket, and 2 ribs. The food came out right away but no comments or anything. We saw the BBQ sauce area and I took a couple of options in condiment cups with no lids available. grabbed some napkins as we would continue our road trip and eat in the car. I am never a big fan of pulled pork; I have my favorite and compare all to it. This had more flavor than most I have had but it was really dry for being ordered early in the day. The brisket was tender and the fat attached gave flavor. The ribs were fine, also dry. This was a pit stop on our road trip because we love BBQ, this just wasn't for us.
