This place used to be an amazing gem. They had a great Mole dish, and even had horchata. Now its a typical flour tortilla lots of cheese sauce Tex-Mex place in the US that barely resembles Mexican food at all. This was our first time trying this restaurant and it did not disappoint! The staff were friendly and helpful and we were seated right away. The restaurant is small but cozy and quaintly decorated. The chips and salsa were amazing-- the salsa had just enough heat, but not enough to be overwhelming. The refills kept coming too! There was a wide variety of appetizing choices on the menu. I went with the steak chimichanga and my husband had the enchiladas supremas. They both tasted delicious! The beans and rice on the side were superb too. We have been here many times, but 4/4/24 has most likely been our last time. They were out of most soft drinks, the chips were stale, the server thought he was a comedian (and a smartass), and the food wasn't nearly as good as in the past. We inquired about the cold, stale chips and the server told us they were frying the chips at a lower temperature for a longer time and that's how they are. I knew that story was crap, but I just let him walk away. Tacos were flavorless, with very little meat and cheese. The ground beef had zero seasoning with no flavor whatsoever. We enjoy good Mexican food, but Terra Sur has become terrible. Never again. read more

Great choice for delicious Mexican while you're in Troy. They have an extensive menu and specials everyday, so ask about those. I got their burritos locos, which were pretty good but portion size seemed a bit small. Meat was tender and delicious. My wife got the shrimp fajita bowl and really enjoyed it too. Nice family run business with great food and some unique recipes. The staff is very friendly. It quickly became my favorite local Mexican food restaurant. Be careful, their Cameron's El Diablo is awesomely hot and spicy. It's not for the faint of heart. I wonder if it's ghost peppers. They said no, but wow was it hot. It was also delicious. I don't know who is doing the previous ratings for this establishment but in our experience this afternoon they can't be accurate. When we arrived we got chips and salsa like any other Mexican restaurant. They were not even close to freshly made. We then ordered and received two different entrees and surprised that neither of them included any side (i.e.. rice, beans, salad, etc.) As I read through the menu again I saw that it had an Ala Carte section and wondered why there would be a separate Ala Carte section when apparently the entire dinners' section on the menu is all Ala Carte. This restaurant was such a disappointment in every aspect including price that we will never return to this establishment again. My suggestion to anyone reading this, go to the BBQ Joint right next store. You get a lot more with sides (included) at a far better food to cost ratio. read more

Superb for not only the price but the quality. The shrimp quesadillas were great, and a big plate (and I know it's rice, but whatever they do to their Spanish rice is magical). This place is family owned and they treat you like family. Had the Fajitas with shrimp/chicken/chorizo .Also comes with guacamole, sour cream, beans and rice. The guacamole & cream come in a taco shell which I used to scoop the beans. The spice of the chorizo added to fajitas. Would recommend this place if you are in the area. read more

I live in Troy, and unless you're looking for a pizza or fast food, your dining choices are extremely limited. I really wanted to like this place. We came here once several years ago and left disappointed, but based on the great reviews here recently, we thought we'd give it another try. The chips they served were nice and crunchy, but the house salsa was a watery mild tomato based liquid. I asked for a spicier salsa and they brought me some. It was hotter, but didn't wow me flavor-wise. For dinner, I ordered a three item combo. Read the menu carefully! I assumed that any of the numbered combos would include beans and rice. That is incorrect here. Only certain combo plates come with beans and rice. My combo was a chili relleno, a chicken enchilada, and a taco. I asked for an al pastor taco and was told there was an upcharge for it. The taco included was a ground beef taco. This should have been a clear sign that this would be a disappointing meal. Authentic Mexican restaurants don't serve ground beef. So I agreed to the upcharge. My wife ordered 3 street tacos a la carte. When my meal came out, I was surprised to see that my $13 combo dinner didn't include rice and beans. The chicken enchilada was ok, but nothing special. The chili relleno was a soggy half of a poblano pepper filled with ground beef and topped with cheese. I've never seen ground beef in a chili relleno before, and it wasn't a welcome addition. For some reason, the taco came wrapped in foil. When I unwrapped it, oil poured out. The taste was good, but the oil created a soggy texture. My wife thought the street tacos were good. I would stick with these. In closing, if you're born and raised in the Midwest and your idea of Mexican food is mild ground beef based food covered in cheese sauce, you'll be happy here. If you want spicier authentic Mexican food, I'd recommend you head south a few more exits and visit one of the restaurants in Fairmont City, a Mexican community just this side of East St Louis. read more

I always feel guilty about giving a kind family restaurant less than 4 stars. And they were indeed very kind people full of warmth and good service. But the food I had--a combo consisting of an enchilada, a burrito, and a tamale--just wasn't that great. It wasn't horrible or anything, but the fillings were incredibly plain and I think they were trying to make up for that with mounds of mole sauce on top. I went to bed debating whether to go with 3 or 4 stars. I woke up at 3 am with a bad case of heartburn. (I rarely ever get heartburn.) The waitress rolled her eyes upon our arrival as we were asked to sit in the sun just so she didn't have to clean off the table.
