Service was okay and the food came out all at once. That's always a plus. I ordered a chicken taco salad. There were no beans and no cheese. The tomatoes were not adequate. There was salsa on the table but it was gone by the time the entrees came. so a small cup in the salad would have been appreciated. El Mags is a go to for Mexican food! They have good lunch specials and just started a new card rewards for lunch. They have great margs and I recommend the prickly pear! They also give you chips and salsa when you sit down at the table that are just included with the meal. I've tried a lot of different things here and everything has been tasty and flavorful! My personal favorites are the chicken and shrimp fajitas (if I'm splitting with someone) and just chicken rice and cheese and using chips to scoop it! The queso is sooo good as well and they wait isn't too bad once you get everything ordered. *side note- the burrito California is alarmingly huge (and great), so either share it or you most likely will have lots to bring home. Went to El Guey for national margarita day. Pitcher of margarita was on point. 32 oz of deliciousness. Was able to mix flavors. Hat thr chicken fries. They were great. Service was a little slow but overall everything was great. Would reccomend this location. read more

My son was home for a visit recently and we wanted to eat somewhere we've never been. I'm so glad we picked El Maguey. We were greeted by friendly staff upon entering and quickly seated in a comfy booth. We were barely seated before we had a basket of warm tortilla chips and bowl of salsa brought to our table. My son ordered the Birria Tacos and I had the Mexican Taquitos to which I added a side of rice. Everything was delicious. Our server was friendly, attentive, and efficient. They also had a clean restroom which I think speak volumes for any business. I can't wait to go back-- highly recommend! read more

Still trying out new restaurants in our new home town. We heard good things about El Maguey. We ordered beef Birria Quesadillas and a beef Chimichanga. The chimi could have been crispier but was otherwise good. The Birria Quesadillas were really good and something we had never had before. Kind of like a Mexican version of a French dip sandwich. They are crispy tacos with a dipping sauce. Amazing! The dipping sauce resembled an au jus. It was incredibly rich. Our waiter couldn't get us the recipe but did get the kitchen to share that the richness comes partly from using the drippings from the steaks prepared the night before for their carne asada. Really really good. Our waiter was wonderful. He was very attentive. So why the four stars instead of five? The kitchen sent out the chimi and sides almost ten minutes before the Birrias. We had to eat in shifts. Hopefully an anomaly because we want to go back. The decor was very nice. read more

Our table had Enchiladas Maguey (shrimp), Pollo Feliz (happy chicken) and the "Special Dinner" (two-plate combo), all fresh and hot, served with plenty of chips and salsa. If you're with a group, or on a first date, you won't feel claustrophobic in the large, well-lit, bi-level space. I've dined here three or four times, and have found the tables and booths equally comfortable. When the outside temperature is moderate, several small round tables and metal chairs are available on the covered sidewalk. This is definitely my go to Mexi spot in town! Their specials are amazing, service is great, and food is awesome! We usually go on Wednesdays for their small (margarita) pitcher special ($7). Which are amazing! Frozen Blue Curacao is a must try! Food is priced comparable to other Mexican restaurants and they're very fast! The inside is always very clean and spacious. During Covid, they all wear masks and require masks to enter until you get to your table. Outside seating is also available. Kid friendly, date friendly, and girls night friendly! Their rice and beans are at a high average. Our burritos this last visit, were another story all together. I cannot remember the menu name but, they were monsters. Monsters full of meat and beany goodness slathered in cheese and Salsa Verde. My partner was over the moon with that massive slab of burrito in front her that she could only eat half of. We really like El Maguey and their food. We have found the service to be just a tad hit and miss when it comes to attention to drinks and to receiving the check, even when they are not overly busy. Food was average. The problem they have price increases due to food shortage which I can handle but they don't tell you how much things are until you get the bill. They've had plenty of time to change to menu prices as I went 2 months ago and it said the same but thought I'd give it another chance and the food wasn't as good this time and the prices were not typical lunch special prices for Mexican food. They need to change there prices as they had plenty of time to change. I come here if I don't feel like going to el Porto in Troy next time I'll just make the drive. read more

I'd actually give them 4.5 stars - almost perfect. Best Mexican style food currently being served in Edwardsville. Service is friendly and the food is usually there very quickly. I like their chips and the "salsa pecosa" (spicy, green salsa). Their warm queso dip for chips is some of the best I've had, as is their refried beans. Food is good, not fancy, but almost always hot and tasty. Very good value. Note: Someone has conned them into thinking they can get "free" new tables and there are cards everywhere to solicit ad space on these new tables. Management: Don't do it! This would look extremely tacky and make it feel more like a bar. Aren't the tables already there sufficient and almost new? You will soon have more competition ( new restaurant opening by Dierberg's) and I'm betting they won't be using tacky tables! read more

My first visit to El Maguey will be my last. The waiter did not speak a bit of English, not even enough to get by as a waiter in a Mexican restaurant. He did not know what we meant when we asked for water, yes and no were foreign to him, plus we sat for 15 minutes without menus after arriving and joining our party. I ordered a margarita (which I had been told were strong), and wondered if I had to also ask for tequila to be put in it as it was very weak. I also ordered the Pollo San Jose, which by the description on their menu was chicken breast covered in spinach and cheese with rice and beans. I received chicken breast covered in cheese on tortilla chips. No spinach to be seen. Since our waiter did not speak English, I saw no way to point out the error. After we finished our meal and paid our bills, the owner came over and stared at us for 5 minutes straight. I guess this was our hint to leave and free up his tables. After all, the restaurant was less than 1/2 full, but I guess he was expecting a huge rush at 7:30pm on a Sunday night for some reason. Overall, weak margaritas, mediocre food, bad service and I felt unwelcome. With at least 7 other Mexican restaurants within 15 miles of this one, I would suggest immediate improvements be made if they want to stay in business. read more

When we got the bill they tried to charge of dinner prices for lunch, when we called on this the waitress got the manager who said that the sign on the door said the prices might be higher . we never saw a sign on the door and we went by the prices on the menu that THEY gave us. Been here a number of times. It's one of our excuses to cross the river & shop in E'ville. Love their caldo tlalpeño! New on the menu are alambre (one of my faves from otherwhere) and molcajete mixto. Had never heard of Mm before, so i decided to try it tonight. When that 3-legged stone pig-on-a-platter hit the table, i was kinda intimidated. Am now pleasantly full, and molcajete is in my vocabulary. Will try the alambre next time, am sure it will be very good. Will try their horchata next time, also. Good food, good service, family friendly, reasonably priced, easy to get to. They usually have decent service but tonight there service was horrible. I have received better service at McDonald's, the waiters weren't getting refills or checking on us. I was next to the counter and witnessed over 5 other customers complain about not receiving food and many canceled there orders. There were around 20 online orders that walked in and walked right out with there food way before we received our food. I used to love this restaurant but the bad service and long wait makes it not worth it. At this restaurant you either get your food in 15 minutes or it takes 1 hour plus the service. They had half the number of people as they did before Covid and never had a single problem with keeping up. read more

Average Mexican fare. The Margaritas are good and the service is decent, EXCEPT for one busy night when we stood at the bar waiting for a table. The bartender completely ignored us while making drinks for others. He looked straight at us, and wouldn't say a word, not even "Be with you in a minute". After 10 minutes, it almost got to be a joke, except it wasn't really funny. There is no excuse for willful ignorance from a waiter or bartender.
