I may not grill a pork steak at home again. The one I got here was fork tender, I did not need a knife at all. I could literally stick my fork in and pull a bite off of the 1 1/4" thick steak. They're only available, while they last and they do go fast. I've also enjoyed their, Two Meat Combo. My choices of meat were, Brisket and Burnt Ends. OMG! Best burnt ends I have ever had and I order them a lot when they're available at any BBQ joint. The Brisket is impressive, too. As a side, I always go with Baked Beans. Especially if they are made in house. My other favorite is Mac-n-Cheese. Both of these are done well here at Doc's. Been here a few times and the food is always delicious! Yesterday hubs and I took one of our kids and her boyfriend and it did not disappoint! Hubs and one of kids got the sandwich (Doc's Special maybe) that had sliced brisket, provolone and sautéed onions with a side. Brisket was perfectly cooked and they both enjoyed. Other kid got the half nachos with pulled pork and really liked it. I got the Smokehouse burger which was topped with cheese, pulled pork and onion rings. So good! And they have seasoned fries which are my favorite! And we got the add on of 5 smoked wings. Impulse purchase we didn't need but so good! Service was good, and the atmosphere is as expected. Had high expectations coming in reading the reviews here and on TripAdvisor. Ordered the two meat platter with brisket and half slab. My ribs were very good. Melt off the bone meat. However my wife's order of ribs were heavy on the loose cartilage ends and she did not enjoy them as much given the texture and the need to eat around the cartilage. Brisket was ok - no smoke flavor and not especially tender. On to the sides - baked beans were the best entry. Thick and hearty and delicious. Fries were so-so, Cole slaw was very watery. My wife had the shredded pork with the corn casserole. My sides were great but the corn casserole left a lot to be desired. The corn casserole was mushy and bland. I'll start with the positive... The pork steak was by far the most tender thick cut pork steak I've ever been served. The sides I had were good. I had the green beans and the corn casserole. Both well prepared and seasoned and very tasty. The bad... there's no flexibility in the menu at all. If you wanted to try a little if all the meats there's really no way to do that. I can't be the only person that likes to do that. So it would be nice if they had a walk through the smokehouse platter that had literally some small amount of each meat they have that day. The really bad. Someone needs to teach whoever tended the smoker(s) for today's lunch service about fire management and that if there's a plethora of white smoke coming out of your smoker the BBQ is going to taste like soot. It should be that light blue smoke gently wafting from the smoke stack. Today's pork steak and pulled pork both smelled and tasted of soot instead of that wonderful sweet smoked pork. I ate very little of each as the spot was just too much. I'll give them one more try. Maybe whoever was tending the pit got distracted or something. We'll see. read more

This place has really good bbq for a decent price. I got the burnt ends entree which comes with 2 sides, and they even asked whether I wanted the sweet potato fries salted or with cinnamon sugar which was a first for me and definitely increased my respect for the restaurant to offer both. The burnt ends were soft with great smoky flavor. The sweet potato fries were good, and the mac and cheese was fine (nothing special but still good). I have been to Doc's twice and I must say, the food is very good! I've had the smokehouse burger and fries as well as the loaded nachos with brisket. Both were excellent. My son had the brisket sandwich and fries. He enjoyed his as well. I've had BBQ all over the country as I make it a point to get some when I travel and I understand that most of the good restaurants only cook what they plan to sell that day, so I get it but at some point I would think that an adjustment would be made when your burnt ends and ribs are constantly sold out by dinner. So that's my only mild complaint, I'd like to be able to try their burnt ends and ribs without having to get them for breakfast lol! read more

It's been a while since I've been to Doc's Smokehouse. I've never had a bad experience or anything, but I just haven't been there. In fact they've moved since was there last. The new spot is in the same general area as the old location. I pulled into the parking lot at about noon on a Thursday. The outside of the restaurant looks nice and I noticed they have outdoor seating. Once inside, I immediately realized I was in a BBQ restaurant. That's a good thing. between the look of a BBQ place and the smell of smoked meats, there was no doubt. The front of the house is nicely decorated and very clean. If all of that wasn't enough to tell you where you are, the trophies, ribbons and pictures should help you understand you are in a place that is real deal BBQ. I noticed the special of the day was called "The Whole Hog". Any sandwich that has my three favorite food groups on it, Pulled pork, de-boned ribs, and bacon, has to be what I am having for lunch. I chose sweet potato fries as a side and a sweet tea to drink. There was a small crowd for lunch, but I think their new neighbor, Hi-Pointe Drive In, may be pulling some curious folks away for now. The server delivered my meal and I was quite happy. The sandwich was served on a fresh soft bun and was piled up with pork goodness. There was a large amount of sweet potato fries and 2 pickle slices on the side. I cut the sandwich in half and dug right in. The sandwich was awesome. The pulled pork was full of flavor, had a nice smoke ring and was tender and juicy. There was a nice smoke flavor and the rub provided a little spice. The rib meat was tender and melted in my mouth. The bacon was providing....well, bacon flavor. I didn't use any sauce and found it was not needed. The sweet potato fries were perfect. the fries were hot, fresh, salted, and full of flavor. I put the pickle slices on the second half of the sandwich and that took it over the top. The acidity of the pickle was a great contrast to the many layers of pork. The employees were friendly and checked on customers regularly, while maintaining the cleanliness of the dining area. Doc's Smokehouse checked off every single box today. Was there for lunch with co-workers. There was nothing bad, per se, but nothing really wowed me either. We all had the brisket and it was ok. There was smoke flavor and it was beef, but it was lacking in juiciness. I won't go so far as to say it was "dry" but it was a lot closer than I would want to serve my own barbecue. It needed sauce and while there were four varieties of sauce on the table, the Carolina sauce was the only one that stood out as different because of the mustard. The other three tasted like three versions of the same sauce, chunky, smooth, and oily. The service was pleasant enough, but the person at the counter seemed a bit tired, or jaded, or something. She wasn't rude, and I certainly don't need a big obnoxious welcome, but we were a party of three people on a business lunch and we all have friendly personalities- she did not. Finally able to give this place a try after going once when they were closed (on Mondays) and one or two other occasions when they were so busy and had long lines. I'll start out with the aroma that greets you at the front door. It smells wonderful inside, but I have to say that I was slightly disappointed beyond that. The meat was very moist and tender, but the turkey was pretty flavorless and did not have the slightest hint of smoky taste to it. The brisket was more like pot roast (very soft) And I like my brisket to have just a bit of chew to it. Don't get me wrong, both were ok, but I guess I was expecting a little more with all that I've heard about this place. Maybe it was just an off day or something. I chose baked beans (with bits of pork steak and brisket in them) and sweet potato fries as my sides (You get two sides with a two meat platter). You have the option of cinnamon and sugar or just salt for the sweet potato fries. I went with salt, and they were very good, as were the beans. She ordered a sliced chicken sandwich with their corn bread casserole as a side. Both were very good, and I would recommend them. Maybe we'll hit this place up again sometime and give them another shot. I've heard they have excellent ribs, I just haven't had them yet. When I do my ratings, a five star rating shouldn't be ordinary or common in my opinion. It should be something truly spectacular, with very little, or perhaps nothing to improve on. Having said that, most good restaurants fall in the 3 to 4 star category, unless it just completely blows me away. I rated this at three Stars because I didn't think it was as memorable of an experience as most of the four-star barbecue joints I've tried out, at least on this particular day.
