Finally able to give this place a try after going once when they were closed (on Mondays) and one or two other occasions when they were so busy and had long lines. I'll start out with the aroma that greets you at the front door. It smells wonderful inside, but I have to say that I was slightly disappointed beyond that. The food was hot and fresh, and although they were busy, we placed our order and got our food quickly. I ordered a two meat platter with turkey and brisket. The meat was very moist and tender, but the turkey was pretty flavorless and did not have the slightest hint of smoky taste to it. The brisket was more like pot roast (very soft) And I like my brisket to have just a bit of chew to it. Don't get me wrong, both were ok, but I guess I was expecting a little more with all that I've heard about this place. Maybe it was just an off day or something. I chose baked beans (with bits of pork steak and brisket in them) and sweet potato fries as my sides (You get two sides with a two meat platter). You have the option of cinnamon and sugar or just salt for the sweet potato fries. I went with salt, and they were very good, as were the beans. She ordered a sliced chicken sandwich with their corn bread casserole as a side. Both were very good, and I would recommend them. Maybe we'll hit this place up again sometime and give them another shot. I've heard they have excellent ribs, I just haven't had them yet. When I do my ratings, a five star rating shouldn't be ordinary or common in my opinion. It should be something truly spectacular, with very little, or perhaps nothing to improve on. Having said that, most good restaurants fall in the 3 to 4 star category, unless it just completely blows me away. I rated this at three Stars because I didn't think it was as memorable of an experience as most of the four-star barbecue joints I've tried out, at least on this particular day. I can't recommend this place enough! The meat is always so flavorful and tender, the portions are sufficient for the cost, and the sides are actually very good. I always smash the baked beans, Mac and cheese, and corn casserole (mouth is watering just typing this); the green beans are just alright. In 2017 Doc's was named by an industry magazine as a top BBQ restaurant in the nation. Yet, in the local area it's lived a quiet existence. That's great for BBQ lovers who don't like long lines. I arrived at this small place in the corner of a strip shopping center at noon. All the tables were taken and there was a line to order. But, the wait was short. The first bite of brisket yielded its smoky taste, which continued throughout the beef. It was served "dry"--without sauce--but four sauce options were tableside. The green beans were a bit better than average due to chunks of bacon mixed in. However, they were in so much liquid what I really had was green bean soup. Tip to staff: use the spoon with slots. We went here for a working lunch. I had the pick 2 combo w/ brisket & Turkey. The brisket was very flavorful and the turkey was very tasty. I had the chili and Mac & Cheese as my two sides. Both sides were good. The Mac & Cheese was made with a white cheddar. One of my co-workers also had brisket. He enjoyed the brisket and said it was very good. For his side he had the cucumber salad. Doc's is tucked away in large strip mall close to the SIUE campus. We tried Doc's on move in day for my daughter's apartment complex. Needless to say, the entire area was busy. The restaurant is pretty small. The service is counter service, similar to other BBQ joints around town. We all ordered sandwiches that came with one side. All the meat comes without sauce but there are four varieties on the table. We all enjoyed our BBQ items which included pork steak, pulled pork and brisket. For sides we had mac n cheese, baked bean and fries. All were very good. My son got a burger and said he wouldn't order it again. It was dry and thin. My first and likely only experience at this place was not fantastic. Myself and three coworkers went for lunch and ordered to-go as the dining room was full. We ordered at 11:48am and as of 12:30pm only three of us had gotten our food. Our fourth coworker finally asked for a refund because we had to return to work. After such a long wait, I will say the food itself was not bad at all. I had a sliced chicken sandwich with onion and pickle, hot n spicy sauce and a side of Mac n cheese. The meal was good, even if hardly warm due to the long wait, but still not exactly worth the price tag in my opinion. I can't believe I've never tried Doc's Smokehouse before now! I am so glad we did. I got the Doc's special sandwich with brisket, onions, and cheese with the corn casserole. It was really tasty! My boyfriend got the burnt ends with coleslaw and his burnt ends were fantastic- definitely the best burnt ends I have had. St. Louis area has it going on for BBQ. Seriously! Looked on Yelp and saw that they have burnt ends (I fucking love Burnt Ends) so I had to stop by. This place is super clean and is following all COVID protocol. So clean in fact you could literally eat off the floor clean. Staff was amazing and super friendly and helpful. Got the 2 meat combo with ribs and burnt ends and green beans and chili beans for my two sides. Both meats were cooked perfectly. The ribs were finished off with bbq sauce which locked in a really nice flavor that was not overly sweet. The burnt ends were bomb with a nice flavor and a little fat. Some people might complain about the fat but that's my shit!! It's Keto! lol Chili beans were good only thing is they put cheese even after I requested no cheese...no biggie. This is a local BBQ restaurant located near the entrance to SIUE. They feature the traditional menu of ribs, pulled pork, brisket, tips and sausage. Sides are beans, potato salad, etc. it's all done good and portions are plentiful. I usually get this to take home, especially with COVID. However I have eaten here recently and feel they are taking the extra measures to be as safe as possible. When ordering for pick up it is best to order ahead. They will ask you for a pickup time and let you know if that slot will be available. Twice I have called on Sunday evenings and been told certain items were sold out so don't wait. They are that good and that popular with the locals. You can also order online but the items may appear sold out when really they are just starting to run low. If you do call be prepared to wait a few minutes to talk to someone. I don't mind the wait as I think they have the best hold music in town! read more

He got the coleslaw (which was proclaimed to be 'very good') and battered onion rings, while I chose the baked beans & mac'n'cheese as per usual. The mac was outstanding, but the beans were KILLER. Thick, sweet, smoky, with bits of bacon and slow-cooked pork mixed in, they were some of, if not *the best* baked beans I've ever encountered. Truly. Bread = 5 Circuses = n/a The sauce selection (there were 4 to pick from) was impressive, but the Carolina was essentially just honey mustard in a squirt bottle. The 3 others were exceptionally good. We both drank sweet tea and our server was speedy with refills. No dessert for us this time around, although the choices were tempting. Speaking of serving size, I ordered the cucumber salad to go with my brisket sandwich, which was also fantastic. Once again, not stingy! They used grape or cherry tomatoes in it, so they actually had tomato flavor. A big plus in my book. It has been some time since Mr D and I have set out on a Wednesday to test another St Louis area barbecue joint. This time we headed across the river to Edwardsville to try Doc's. We had started to do this once before and got sidetracked. I'm glad we finally made the trip. Doc's is a thriving newish place in a strip mall. It was fairly busy at lunch time and it seems that they are doing well. Mr D had a 4 bone rib plate and I ordered a pulled pork plate with a half rack of ribs to go. If I drive this far I have to test at least two of the meat offerings. Starting with the pulled pork, I was pleased. I am often critical of St Louis area pulled pork, but occasionally I find some that I like. This was truly pulled and then dressed very lightly with a thin sauce that added some sweetness. It was fresh, moist and well smoked. I ate it plain, avoiding bread, but it would certainly make a very good sandwich. I also liked that while dressed with a sauce, it was not over applied. Four stars for this. I had their creamy cole slaw and green beans on the side. Slaw was fine if not remarkable and the beans were seasoned with smoked meat and well-cooked onion. This was a decent job on two mundane sides. Mr D complimented the ribs while I have a mixed review. The key thing is that they were well cooked and well smoked, so hats off for that. When I say, well cooked, they came clean off the bone but were not fall-off-the bone mush. Also, although I again forgot to ask for them to be served without sauce, fortunately that is the way they serve them, un-sauced. With all that said, they have done 95% of the hard work very well. It's just that they had little if any rub and that means no salt. None. So what would have been 4-1/2 to five star ribs become 2-1/2 - three star. I don't eat sauce on ribs. These required it. I'm not saying salt them heavily. They just need some. This was well prepared but unseasoned meat. A little too purist for me. read more
