I woke up Easter morning and there was no Easter Basket filled with chocolates waiting for me. What should I expect when I am an old man living alone with two dogs. Since I had no basket to enjoy, I decided to take myself out for Brunch. I remembered the last time I went to brunch at, Brick + Bramble, it was pretty good. So I made myself presentable and headed to Edwardsville. I'll tell you up front, this Brunch far exceeded the last one and I thought it was outstanding. I seated myself at the bar, my favorite place to eat when dining alone. Was glad to see one of my favorite things and that is Hooks and Outlets Under the Bar. It's such a nice touch, to provide those for the customers. Let me start out giving a shout out to the young lady who was bartending. She did an outstanding job making my cocktails and taking my order. I ordered a Morning Martini and she asked if I wanted that or did I really want just an Espresso Martini. She quickly explained the differences and I went with the Espresso. I've had the Morning, but this espresso one, made my morning. While I was reading the Brunch menu, another server came up to retrieve drinks for her table. As she waited, I asked her what would she recommend for me to order. Without blinking she said, Fried Chicken Benedict. I giggled and told that was what I was leaning towards and her recommendation made my mind up. When my Benedict arrived, my eyes bugged out of my head. It was huge, I mean seriously huge. I could not eat all of it, I had to take half home. Later that night, a little warm-up and I had dinner. The Benedict was grilled biscuits topped with hand-bread fried chicken breast topped with over-easy eggs and house made sausage gravy. The breading on the breast was crunchy and crisp. Eggs were done perfectly and the sausage gravy was equal to a farmers wife. I may have been getting full, but I couldn't just have one cocktail. After all it's Brunch and Easter morn. After seeing the flier for the spring cocktail specials, I ordered a Pistachio Martini. It's vanilla vodka, Amaretto, Bailey'sBlue Curacao with a Crushed Pistachio Rim, made up for not having an Easter Basket filled with chocolate. The rich creamy texture was like drinking a dessert. I just heard Brick and Bramble is closing, which is unfortunate. My biking group meets there after our weekly evening ride and I have to say that it is crazy that Brick and Bramble/Global Brew have the same owners and yet the service and food is completely different. Brick and Bramble has better food, better cocktails and better service. Global has a great beer list but inconsistent food and the kitchen is slow. If you order the smash burger, one week it might be a hockey puck and the next week you might get an actual burger. If you complain, you get attitude from the kitchen. Our group would frequently order food from B+B and drinks from Global and enjoy our evening on the shared patio. Sorry to hear that B+B is closing but I also hope Global takes it up a notch. The worst service EVER!!! 8 of us gathered for dinner, and the server could not have been worse. We had reservations and the place was not packed on a Saturday evening. The server, Heidi, never cleared away dirty plates, and she left empty beer cans and glassware for a couple of hours. I asked if she could remove our dirty plates and empty cans and glasses, and to fill our water glasses. She proceeded to clean the glass door and totally ignored us. The food was very disappointing, too. None of us will ever return to Brick and Bramble. There were 2 servers and a bartender in the front of the restaurant. When I collected some of our dirty dishes and placed them on the end of the bar where nobody was seated, the bartender said he would send the server over, but she never appeared. Both were very good with my favorite being the arancini and his being the short rib ravioli. My White Russian was not as creamy as I was expecting and was quite strong. Great service by CJ for our work end of year get together. We ordered all three large spreads, and it was phenomenal. I recommend giving the unique cheeses on the charcuterie board a try. We were all pleasantly surprised. The lamb was tender and even better than what we have had at Greek restaurants. The oven roasted potatoes were some of the best I've had too. As the guys and I entered Brick and Bramble, I wondered if I would be underdressed. By all accounts it is a great place to bring a date or have girls or guys night out. We were sat in a section of the restaurant that provided us the most handsome and kind server Charles. Charles brought the drinks out first and they did not disappoint. My 7 Year was a great take on and Old Fashioned. The group of guys ordered the varying items you can see in the attached photos. The Shrimp were plump and fresh. They were served at just cooler than room temperature with a simple cocktail sauce. The shrimp were sprinkled with some pickling herbs that did not impact the taste. The Flatbreads were amazing. The Chicken Wings had a dry rub and the Duck wings were sauced. Don't shy away from the Duck Wings, they were worth the experience. The Side Medallions were ordered as a small plate appetizer, but I believe the intent on the menu was as an addition to a salad. They lacked S&P Seasoning but they were tender and cooked to perfection. The table next to us ordered the Butter Board and the Charcuterie Board which looked so good I almost asked if I could snap a photo for this post. My total bill was $88 plus gratuity and I left completely satisfied with my experience. All in all it was a great place for guys night out, afterwards we walked over to an empty patio and enjoyed Cigars until long after the sun went down. All of our food including the $120 Father's Day board was lukewarm borderline cold when brought to our table (excluding the kids chicken tenders and fries). I ordered a dirty martini and my wife ordered a glass of Cabernet. The dirty martini was very good. I asked for blue cheese stuffed olives since the bar appeared to be very upscale. She said they had them, but when she brought my drink, they were obviously pre-stuffed with no real flavor. We decided to order four small plates and share. Don't be fooled, these are not small plates! The portions were very large, especially for the price. The tuna was fantastic. The steak was good. The scallops were good. Mozzarella with smoked tomatoes was good, but the smoke in the tomatoes kind of took over the whole flavor. When we go back, we probably will only order two things to share. My one complaint was that I ordered a little cup of soy sauce for the tuna, and when I got the bill, I was charged a dollar for that. I was also charged a dollar for the blue cheese olives. It just felt like I was getting nickeled and dimed, although I believe the prices were very reasonable for everything else compared to the quality and portion size. We will be back. read more
