Open Rice Kitchen opens late! So, if you want some late night food... My best friend and I had a long night out and we were kind of buzzed. We had the late night munchies and used our Yelp app to look for a place that was open at around 1-2 am. We came here on a Saturday night. I believe it stays open until 3 am on Saturdays. We ordered the Ork fries. The Ork fries were $7 before tax. The Ork fries are criss-cut fries topped with Korean pulled pork, sour cream, sweet and spicy sauce and nori. We thought that it was pretty greasy. Also, the pulled pork was chunky. It would've been better if the pulled pork were cut into smaller pieces, so that I can get a piece of pulled pork with every bite. It's decent food, especially after a long night out. I'm not from the area, but I probably wouldn't eat here for lunch or dinner. I'd probably just return back if I want some late night food and snacks. read more

I was starving and a rice dish sounded good. I went with the Loco Moco. I have to say it was the worse I ever had. It's like they didn't know what it was. It's a typical dish in HI. Burger patty, gravy, rice, and a fried egg. I would have thought it was simple to make. There was no gravy but instead they used a ton of soy sauce and stir fried it in broken ground beef. I've been coming here since they've opened up (4-5 years ago). Love everything as it's fair priced (including kung pao & potstickers)! To be fair, I am the person to leave a review when I am either blown away by amazing experiences or the exact opposite. I ordered over the phone & called back, as I messed up my order. And the response was pretty sassy, saying they couldn't change it, they ran out of half of my order, and don't place an order unless I'm going to pick it up. The location of this place is perfect for those drunken nights out when your hungry af. I always get the pork belly fried rice. It's one of their top sellers so you can't go wrong with it. But be warned, they are very inconsistent with their food. Sometimes, it'll taste bomb and other times, it's bland. It seems like when this place ain't busy, they'll cook one serving of pork belly fry rice and the chef can season it correcting. But when it's busy and multiple people are ordering pork belly fry rice, the chef will cook a big batch at once and not season it properly. Their boba is definitely one of the cheapest boba in Davis. Most of their food are a little oily. I love their Kimchi Fried Rice -- it's not too spicy. I also love their fried Nutella wonton, it's crispy! Their Chinese donut bites come in 8 pieces and it's really good. Nutella wonton & Chinese donuts are only $3.50. I usually order Thai Tea with boba and it has strong tea taste. I would recommend Thai tea if you want their boba. The boba come in large size(only one size). There's usually place to park either you're driving or biking. Their service is pretty good and most of my orders come in less than 20 minutes. If you want a break, come here -- they have free wifi. Wowow this place is cool! Came here with some friends to visit Davis and explore the night scene. Thought we should have something in our bellies before going bar hopping, and heard about this place from other friends. All the appetizers sounded good, so we got fried calamari and Nutella wontons! Both around ~$4-5, it was good. Fried calamari was slightly sweet but the chili sauce that came with really made the dish pop with flavor. I couldn't stop eating them!! Nutella wontons were deep fried and covered with chocolate sauce with powdered sugar. I thought it was okay because I felt it was slightly stale, the oil kept getting all over my hands, and the taste was so much, I could only eat one. I was having such a hard time picking what to get, but finally decided on the Braised pork belly rice plate and OMG it did not disappoint! My friends and I were hungry so we stopped by at Old Teahouse(Usual spot for popcorn chicken, but closed for spring break) but they were closed so we ended up here at Open Rice Kitchen. Which turned out to be a horrible mistake. Why you may ask? Because the food fucking sucks. At first I was planning on ordering just the popcorn chicken but other items caught my attention, such as the Braised pork belly rice, Orc Mac & Cheese. I ordered both of them because I was high and I wanted to give them a shot and to say the least, I am never coming back. To begin with the Popcorn chicken was dry and tough as shit, had a very similar texture to beef jerky, and for the braised pork belly rice dish the pork belly wasn't even braised or seasoned, it was just plainly fried. And finally as for the Orc Mac & Cheese, the dish had no fucking cheese! It was plain macaroni noodles topped with pulled pork. I understand that this place is cheap but come on that doesn't make up for the shitty food served at this establishment. People giving this place more then a star shame on you, I was fooled by the 3 1/2 stars this place had and how modern and clean it looked inside. This place is garbage and anybody with a palette for Asian food will know. It's inexpensive but you get what you pay for, but in this case you won't even get that. If you're looking for cheap food Open Rice is probably one of the best places to go! The food is a little bland but does the job. They have a lot on the menu so you can pick and choose from large or small items. They also serve boba and often for pretty cheap! I think its a powder based boba though so dont expect top of the line tea. They always have specials that are $5- follow their facebook to know whats cheap that day! The restaurant has plenty of seating. The store itself smells pretty much like the food they serve as their kitchen is pretty visible to the rest of the store. Thai tea and all the drinks here are priced well for as much as you get. They also have a board of daily specials which were very good deals. Bottled beers and beers on tap are served here. The bathrooms and dining area was very clean and I appreciate that because soooo many places don't cater to their bathrooms daily, and I'm one of those people who will hold it over using a dirty bathroom. I stopped here on the way from Tahoe to San Francisco for lunch and got the eggplant/tofu with rice for myself and the pork belly burgers for the husband. The rice entree was freshly prepared and piping hot and the pork belly burger wasn't bad either (we did check for mold on the bread as mentioned by another yelper, but didn't find any). The lunch was filling and we didn't have any digestive issues on the way back so that's a great thing! The boba teas looked passable given that there are better options in Davis. Open Rice Kitchen is the place to go if you want a quick meal in high quantity for a good price. The food itself tastes alright, but the only good options on the menu are their rice bowls (although they come to you in paper plates). I do not recommend their noodles. The best thing about this place is their really cheap boda tea in a large container. It tastes just like the other places and you get more gang for your buck. The staff seems nice and the food gets out in good time from order to your table. Overall, I would recommend this place for a quick meal and a fun hangout but not for anything more than that. read more

We ordered the Kimchi Fried Rice and Strawberry Green Milk Tea with pearls. Even after 2 years of eating Asian and Korean cuisine constantly, ORK still has the BEST Kimchi Fried Rice for a non-Korean restaurant- HANDS DOWN! ((Sorry UC Berkeley's Bear! ;P)) The Kimchi Fried Rice comes in a huge portion of a take-out box for to-go. The amount of rice in the box wasn't just hovering above the Styrofoam line-- the food was piled over the top in the box! The kimchi is well-integrated and cooked into the rice and their eggs are cooked perfectly every time- over easy. The cook is also able to over medium or over hard if you ask! I love breaking my yolk and just mixing it into the fried rice-- silky, smooth, & spicy. The milk teas here are obviously powder but tasty nonetheless. The strawberry green milk tea was way too sweet for my taste palate, but I usually love their bubble milk and Thai teas! :) Sizes are about 24oz for reasonable ~$3 price. I don't know. The food here was alright until their one year anniversary celebration... Before the 1 year celebration, I thought this place was alright. The food was always made fresh, not a lot of oil, and had a lot of flavor in it. I really liked the Ha-Moon Style Chow Fun and the Kung Pow chicken over rice. Service was pretty good as well. The waiters and waitresses would normally check up on us. Everyone was friendly and was all about the customers. The place was nice and clean too! Fast forward to the one year anniversary. It was on finals week for UC Davis. All their food items were half off and Boba tea were $1. The deals started at 6pm and supposedly goes on until they close. My friends and I came here right at 6 and there was an extremely long line. Because we are poor college students, we decided to wait in line...first mistake. We waited an hour just to order... While in line, they had to kick everyone off their FREE wifi just because their systems were crashing. So we ordered and waited. 3 HOURS later, we finally get our food. 3 hours on finals week is a LOT of studying that could have been done. Luckily I brought my study materials, but some of my friends didn't. Nobody expected for the wait to be that long. Apparently, they were cooking each meal one at a time instead of large batches. I felt that would have expedited the process sooo much. On top of all that, the food wasn't good like it was in the past. It was obvious they spent the bare minimum amount of time just to crank through the orders. There was absolutely no flavor in any of the rice or noodles. The popcorn chicken was super dry. I don't think it was worth the wait. The boba drinks according to my friends were just horrible too that night. Powder. Powder everywhere. They ran out of calamari by the time I ordered, and they stopped taking food orders around 9. Apparently they ran out of all their food. Seriously, how does that happen? Nothing went well that night. "Meh, I've experienced better" is a good description for ORK. The atmosphere is very college-student oriented, with beers on tap, a quick-service set up, and a simple menu that's fairly easy on the wallet, particularly if you take advantage of their specials that they advertise on their facebook page. I've been here when it's not busy and had the Chicken Fried Rice which was a $5 special. Slightly too saucy and too oily, but the taste was acceptable and the portion was more than adequate. Also had the Beef Chow Fun which was a disappointment. Tons of oil, little flavor (particularly the "wok hei" or the "wok flavor" that comes from stir-frying over high heat) and poor quality of beef (with a tiny portion of beef as well that was not tender). Definitely not worth the $6.50. I've also had the chicken/salt fish fried rice, Mongolian beef rice plate, and house sauce chicken rice plate. The chicken/salt fish fried rice was not bad, but could have used more salted fish in the portion. The house sauce chicken (house sauce being soy/oyster sauce, most likely) was not bad and the tasty sauce went well with the steamed vegetables that were stir fried with the chicken. The sauce, however, had way too much cornstarch that caused the sauce to coagulate when the dish cooled. The mongolian beef flavor wasn't bad, but once again the portion of beef was disappointing along with being low-quality. ORK (great acronym) is ok for what it is, a cheap place in a college town to fill up on mediocre adaptations of HK-style favorites. Service is acceptable, but deteriorates when this place gets busy with tables not cleared and it taking forever to get orders.
