Overall Rating: 3.5 Rating of my Fav Orders and the overall vibe: 4.0/4.5 I've been coming to Open Rice Kitchen SINCE they opened. If there was anyone who can legitimately review this place, it's me. It's known to an entire generational legacy of my friends as ORK for short. I come here far more than I care to actually reveal. LOL Now, this will be a mix of an honest review as well as a smidge of bias due to some of the workers. When this place first opened, right up to about the first few years, the place was great! The quality of the dishes were kept high. The cooking and flavor was consistent. At one point, I would consider this place to have had THE BEST salted fish and chicken fried rice as well as the fried calamari that I've had in both yolo and solano county. The salted fish and chicken fried rice used to have BOTH the salted fish and the chicken and it was amazing. The other dishes were also pretty decent and the deals were great! The milk teas and other drinks weren't the best, but they were good for such an affordable price point. Fast forward to about the middle years... Quality went down quite a bit. The food was inconsistent...flavor wise. Sometimes, the inconsistencies were so big that I would return my food (I never return my food unless it was actually needed). Customer service sort of went down as well. LOTS of staff turnover during that time as well. Lots of things seemed like it was off during the middle years. Fast forward to the last two years, specially the last year (Yes the pandemic year). IF there was a place that gave me a sense of normalcy during the pandemic, it was ORK. They stayed open throughout and the quality of the food seems to have improved again for the better. The head cook, Jorge is great and knows how to make the dishes well and properly as well as consistently. I used to always asked who was cooking on a specific day before I'd make a decision on what to get, but I believe that because of him, the consistent quality of the food is getting better across all the cooks. There's another cook there (I call him Man Bun Guy), who is also really great. He once made a salted fish and chicken fried rice for me that was SOOO good that I had to call in while driving just to compliment him. And how can I not talk about the front cashier people like Lara, Sean(who unfortunately no longer works there as of now), and others? They are all awesome. They really help brighten my day and would always engage in conversation. It was one of the bright moments of my days during the pandemic. Yes, the food has been good as of late, but honestly, the reason why I'm giving it a 4/4.5 is because of the people working there. They truly keep the restaurant afloat and help keep the loyal customers coming back. I hope that the owner knows and recognizes this. *** Vegetarian Review *** Cheap. Relatively Fast. Edible. Not the most glowing endorsement, but I still eat here 5-6 times per year. Twice for lunch and the remainder during those "Fifth Meal" hours. Thursday thru Saturday they close at 2AM. You can substitute any meat for the other white meat, aka tofu, and in less than 8 minutes, you're eating and can go about the rest of your day or early morning. A few years ago, they offered faux meats and I was a big fan of their Mongolian faux chicken, but as they say, all good things must come to an end. I probably keep coming back for the slight chance they offer it once again, but regardless, it's still cheap, relatively fast, and edible eats. Soft Scrambled Egg Noodles with tofu (Grade C): I've ordered this dish at New Lai Wah in Sacramento and fell in love with the flavor. Imagine an egg drop soup poured over chow fun noodles. So when I saw it here, I was an eager eater. Well, the dishes look similar, but unfortunately that's where the similarities stop. As you can see from the photos, the "egg drop soup, white sauce" mixture is poured over the noodles, but it's not enough to permeate the entire dish. You only get flavor on the upper level of your food and if you try to mix it, then the noodle to sauce ratio makes for a bland bite. But again, cheap, relatively fast, and edible. The unfortunate part of the meal was the tofu and it leads me to believe they don't get a lot of vegetarians or people that prefer tofu. Guessing this is probably why they stopped offering faux meats as well. The tofu was slightly sour and for vegetarians, we can tell when the tofu is past it's due date. My best guess is this was 2 days past its prime. Their tofu stock may sit longer because of poor turnover. With all that said, I'll be back. I won't be ordering the scrambled egg noodle dish, but I'll be back. I saw a guy eating on the adjacent table and he had a large noodle dish that was steaming out of the bowl -- so next time. They do have a Kimchee Fried Rice, but I haven't asked them if their kimchee is prepared with fish paste. If not, this may be the go to item. Overall restaurant observations: - Inside seating only. - Parking. Street parking mostly (90-120 minute max), but there is a small parking lot right next door. Keep in mind this is in downtown Davis and if you go during lunch or dinner hours, street parking can take a little longer. I recommend parking parking on the H Street Alley (near the train station) and take the little path through the back of the building. - Boba. They serve boba. I've never tried theirs, but I noticed the straws aren't individually wrapped which means I won't be trying this in the near future. read more

I had a friend who said she really enjoyed this place so I tagged along with her. We came on a promotional night so our meal was super cheap! Kudos catering to your college community! I got the braised pork belly with egg, and I have no complaints. I also ordered their boba which comes in a oddly shaped cup. It's a very wide cup, and not your standard boba sized drink. The boba was average. On promotional nights I would come here because it's a good deal, but the food they serve here is pretty heavy, so if you're feeling like having a heavy meal this is the spot. I'm not giving a full five stars because I wouldn't have come to this spot if they didn't have the promotion, and as a Filipino judging other Filipino food, I wasn't in awe of the quality. I think this restaurant perfectly encapsulates what a fast, cheap local spot should be: it's fast, it's cheap, and it's decent! Some dishes are only okay - I'm not a big fan of their chicken and broccoli, and the crab rangoons can be hit or miss. Some of their dishes are good but not great, like their beef chow fun. However, some of their food is GREAT like the Singapore noodles. What all of these dishes have in common, however, is that you cannot find the same dish at another restaurant for cheaper in Davis. This might be the only local restaurant in town where you can get a filling meal for under $10. Open Rice Kitchen doesn't have the tastiest food in Davis, but they do have the best $-to-tastiness ratio. Also, get a coffee at Pacha's across the street, you won't regret it. read more

Thank you ORK for having daily deals. I got the BBQ pork fried rice and donut bites, which ended up being around $10. There was a lot of rice that I was able to get 2 meals out of it. It was pretty good, though it needed a little more soy sauce to make it tasty. The donut bites were very good where it was crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. I ordered the soft scrambled egg over chow fun with shrimp to go. I had a little hope for this place because the restaurant did smell good when I walked in. Well, it took the kitchen 20 minutes to make my order. When I opened my order I just saw some sad pale noodles with a few baby shrimps in a watery sauce. I took a bite and there was no flavor what so ever. I did not expect this because I saw some pictures of the soft scrambled egg dishes and it did not look like what I have received. Came here for a quick meal on our way home from Vacaville - and the sound of kimchee fried rice drew me in. I ended up ordering the ORK fries instead, but I did get to try a taste of the kimchee fried rice and the Singaporean noodles. My fries were really good! They were perfectly crispy waffle fries with tender shredded meat. Just needs more sour cream and it'd be perfect. The Singaporean noodles were good but from a glance it looks like there's way more veggies than noodles. The kimchee fried rice on the other hand, where's the kimchee!? It just looked like a bowl of orange rice with random kimchee mixed in between and a few edamame scattered on top. The taste was there, IF you got kimchee in that bite, and it definitely needs some kind of meat! I can see the appeal for this type of place in a college town - cheap and quick food, especially those $1 boba drinks, can't beat that. Open Rice Kitchen is THE place to go when you are in the mood for good food that won't break your wallet. It's the best place in Davis if you want food and bubble tea drinks. So why five stars? Is it that good? The answer is it is... given the price. The food at Open Rice Kitchen is solid. It's not a fancy gourmet restaurant, but if you know what you want, you'll be satisfied. It was late and I was coming back from watching the Sacramento Kings play. Not too many places are open at this hour, but Open Rice Kitchen was. And the place was abuzz with people. I told the owner (who is there quite often) exactly what I was going for. I wanted something was WASN'T greasy or too saucy. I wanted some veggies and tofu with some clean tasting meat. I didn't even order something from the menu... I asked him for what I felt like and he was able to figure it out. I was AMAZED. When the dish came to my table it was exactly what I wanted. And I happily ate the entire thing. My wife ordered the almond milk tea with boba. The milk teas at Open Rice Kitchen are a generous size, and I know that drinks there have been tested over and over to be the best they can be. Open Rice Kitchen offers some of the creamiest milk teas in town. And you can get a stamp card to earn free ones! For a college town like Davis, Open Rice Kitchen is the place to go. This Chinese restaurant isn't original at all. I feel like what they serve in terms of the selections on food and beverages, layout of dining and paying at the register has been all done in the past. On top of that, the quality, taste, price and presentation of the food is average. Food we ordered: Open Rice Kitchen Fried Rice - $7.25 - Sweet with the pineapples and a little bit different with the scallions added to the fried rice. Ha-Moon Style - $6.50 - You can choose if you want vermicelli noodles or chow fun and we got vermicelli. The sauce that they used to stir-fry with the noodles, shrimp, BBQ pork, slices of bell peppers, onions and bean sprouts was sweet rather than salty, but nothing that screams delicious. It took some time for the food to be ready (there's only one chef and one waiter, who is also the cashier). They are understaffed. I like how they have TVs on the wall - it gives me some sort of entertainment while waiting for the food to come out. One of the TVs was showing Food Network. In my opinion, watching them cook up gourmet food on the screen and then having average food served to you is a bit saddening to the mind and stomach. We ordered the following: pork belly fried rice, loco moco, tempura string beans, calamari, and ork fries. Hell no! We didn't finish everything ! Tf you think I am?! A fatty?! Ok, maybe I am. But, we always seem to order more than we can actually eat. It's just been a habit of ours. Pork belly fried rice - bits of pork belly and green onion mixed into a bed of fried rice and topped with a fried egg. This dish had the right amount of salty that was balanced out by the rice . I just wish the fried egg was runny . Loco moco - I was unimpressed by their rendition of loco moco. Based off of my one time experience here, I'll definitely recommend this place to my friends and come again! I saw other reviews about poor COVID protocol, but today, I had a positive experience. COVID Safety: There were social distancing signs throughout the restaurant. The tables were untouched and clean. There's hand sanitizer at the entrance, at the register, and at the utensil/straw area. The two employees I saw were wearing masks. I came at 4pm and there was just one family waiting for their order so I can't say whether or not the social distancing is heavily enforced, but like, Davis people are pretty good about self-enforcing anyway. All in all, I felt safe in this restaurant. Back to regular comments about the actual food LOL: I got the pork belly fried rice and jasmine green milk tea with boba. The most exciting thing to me is that their milk teas are $2.50 and come with boba! That is the cheapest milk tea I've ever had. And it's a pretty big size cup. I'm not sure exactly how many ounces it is, but I'd probably guess around 20 oz. The pork belly fried rice is pretty tasty. I was expecting bigger pieces of pork because I saw other pictures here on Yelp, but that must have been for a different pork belly dish. The pork belly reminds me a lot of Filipino type pork belly (as opposed to Chinese char siu pork belly). There's probably enough to share between two people, which for $8 is pretty awesome. However, I'd say this dish is EXTRA seasoned with hoisin sauce. I really do like it, but I'd probably only get this when I'm treating myself to a heavy dinner after a long day when I want to overindulge; IMO this is not a light meal or a healthy meal to have on the daily (weekly might still be too much for me lol). This place has everything a college student needs-Milk tea, Internet, and cheap & delicious food! I always come here for the cash specials ($1 boba milk tea and $5/5.99 entrees, depending on the day). My fail safe thing to get here is the Loco Moco, Pork Belly Fried Rice, or Singaporean Chow Fun. All are delicious and portions are generous. I usually eat it for two meals! Although quite delicious, this is on the oilier side of Chinese food. This asian fusion restaurant offers you food with large portion sizes and low prices! They always offer many great deals involving different dishes and drinks (like boba) depending on the day. My favorite dish to get here is the pork belly fried rice! My friends get the chicken chow mein or the loco moco. There aren't many places in Davis where I can find decent Chinese food. This place, although not uh-mazing, it's relatively cheap and I love that it's open late. When I come here, I usually get the Special Fried Rice or the Beef Chow Fun. It usually tastes better after I smother it with Sriracha though. The Wonton Noodle Soup is the item that is the best bang for your buck, I would say. However, the soup is a little bland, but what would you expect for paying $5. The food is super greasy! I've been noticing this more because they now use compostable plates whenever you eat in the restaurant. The bottom of the plate soaks up all of the oil like nothing. Not appetizing. (Portions are smaller too compared to take-out). This place can get crowded at night and the service is MUCH slower when it does. Much slower. My friends and I waited nearly 30 minutes for four orders of Wonton Soup! If you get a chance, try their Green Milk Tea and Black Milk Tea. It's pretty good! Sometimes they have 50% off their milk teas too, so then it's really worth it! Only $1.25! Their other teas aren't as good, because they use powder for flavoring and it just doesn't mix properly and settles on the bottom. After that I proceeded to wait for my food when overheard her and the Hispanic cook talking bad about me and my 'ridiculous' request for light brown wontons instead of extra crispy like usual, both thinking I didn't speak Spanish when in fact I do and am Hispanic my self. Then I come to find out the wontons are so crispy it's almost they did that on purpose as they laughed at my request thinking I couldn't understand. They accept cards but sometimes their specials are only valid if you pay in cash. It's great place to eat and get a little work done because they have many places to sit, a clean bathroom and free wifi. If you're craving just plain milk tea or thai team, this is the place to be without breaking your wallet. I've tried the popcorn chicken. While their portions are huge, it seems a little over cooked. Their ORK fries (waffle fries) were topped with pork and some sort of mayo sauce but I found the pork just a little on the sweet side. This place is really good for late night munchies . My favorite thing to get is the popcorn chicken and shrimp fried rice with a mango snow . The popcorn chicken hits the spot , they're very generous with the amount and also with the rice (which is why they get tips when I go). The staff is always nice with my questions because I hardly ever know what I want to eat . They don't get annoyed which is great because I like to see photos when I eat and when I don't have that I like to ask questions . Karen was the cashier who helped me and was very nice and chill. I'm going to be honest, this is the spot I frequent the most in Davis. When I was working in town, I'd come here nearly every day. Now, I just make a point of coming by when I'm in town. Why Open Rice? Simply put, it's got the best deals in town. No, seriously. The BEST deals in town. 8 potstickers for $4. Bacon wrapped Brussels sprouts for $3.50. TWO craft beers for $5 - with rotating, local options to choose from. I'll be honest - you can find a better beer selection elsewhere, and the same can probably be said for the quality of food - but you can't find a better combination of Asian cuisine and craft beer in one location in Davis, and especially not for anywhere near as good of a deal. I'm a huge fan of going on Sundays, too. Wings are 50 cents a piece and you get to choose from a decent variety of flavors. The wait's typically not very long, most days, but you might run into a bit of a wait to get your food if you come on a busy Sunday during the wing special or at late night during, say, finals. I personally recommend grabbing those two beers for $5 while you wait, if that's the case. Absolutely worth it. The staff is always nice and courteous. Shout out to Katherine for remembering me, even though I've only been in like twice this year! I have been wanting to try this eatery for a while. I guess the wait was not worth time. We ordered the brussels sprouts wrapped with bacon, salt and pepper wings and the orange chicken with fried rice as a substitute. Add a peach slush and we had it all for 24 bucks. This place reminds me a bit of Old Tea House but I would say this place is a lot better. This place is big, open late, has FREE WIFI, service is great and nice, and if you stay there to eat they serve your meal on fancy plates and bowls, and the prices are fair too! So far I have had their Ha-Moon style chow fun noodles, Singapore style chow fun noodles, the Satay Beef chow fun (from a friend), Kimchee fried rice (from a friend), Kung Pao chicken (from a friend), and the hot and sour soup. I really enjoyed their Ha-Moon noodles and their Kimchee fried rice. I didn't really like their hot and sour soup because I definitely had better and their other entrees were okay. I want to come back here and try their other dishes and possibly order the Ha-Moon noodles again and try more of their Kimchee fried rice! :D read more
