The band was awesome, the food was yummy, and the bartenders were great. Unfortunately, why I'm giving a 2 out of 5 stars was the wait staff/service was awful - the waitress was all over the place. At one point our friends had arrived, and wasn't fully ready to order. One placed her order, while our other friends asked for a few minutes to go over the menu. 25 minutes later, she finally returned only to interrupt my friends order to let them know the kitchen had closed. Only 3 of us actually ordered while everyone awkwardly watched us eat. And the kicker? The door to the kitchen, which we sat right next too, kept parading out with food for the next hour. Come on Open Range, it's 9:30, on a Saturday night. Plus, how can you have your waitresses work on most likely the busiest night of the week, and not be able to handle the "crowd". Never again. Our waitresses were dumb are slow. One was training the other one.. great!! The service was slow, food was horrible. when we got our food it was cold. Our kids mac and cheese was cold and you could tell it was reheated. The worst Mac & Cheese ever. My pulled pork sandwich had way too much bbq sauce on it. My grilled vegetables tasted like rotten veggies. so disgusting!! I am not a picky person. The atmosphere is the first thing you notice when you walk in. The location is very dark and dated. For anyone who vacations in Wisconsin, it has that cliche Wisconsin restaurant feel. The place doesn't appear to have been updated in 20-30 years. The silverware and plates are all mismatched. The service was below average in terms of politeness and attentiveness. The food was the highlight, however it was unimpressive. We ordered a burger, which was decent, although it was overcooked for how it was ordered and very greasy. The shrimp special was about average, and the kid's meals were really poor. They had a salad bar which was very unappetizing. The place seems to cater more to locals, which somewhat surprisingly was not the most appealing clientele to eat with, as they were mostly a bar crowd in that undivided section of the restaurant and seemed to take the entire restaurant over. This was our first trip there. We were a party of 14, and service was good. Food was great, everyone seemed pleased.My wife had a pasta dish tat she liked very much. I ordered a pizza and was very pleased as well. Portions are large, prices are reasonable. They have so many choices, I will have to come back. Great beer selection as well. read more

Let me begin by saying my husband is a very negative/picky person. He has to find something wrong with most places we go, but he could not find one thing at Open Range! And I am so grateful for just that. We dined last Friday evening, all you can eat fish was excellent! I especially like the baked. Very reasonable priced and it came with the soup/salad bar. We had our three small children as well and they enjoyed their meals. Last but certainly not least, we ordered the raspberry beignets to go - everyone was too stuffed to eat them there - they were great as well! Went there tonight to celebrate. Been living in this area 20 years and been through numerous owners of this establishment. Worst service ever. The server was bad enough but when we tried to complain at checkout the "MANAGER" was too busy on his cell phone. When I called to talk to someone the same "MANAGER" told me he was on the phone with distributors. At 7:30 PM??? And do that in your office, not at the checkout station. RUDE, RUDE, RUDE. Went to the Sunday brunch and was unimpressed. First, I found a hair in the fruit. There was no toast or any type of bread, which was unusual for a buffet. I like toast with my eggs, or with a meal for that matter. There was a chocolate Bundt cake and a couple pastries on a side table. Open Range is a FANTASTIC establishment! It has been a staple for my family and I for years since under new management. The staff is friendly and EXTREMELY personable. The food is EXCELLENT, and the service is quick and attentive. Their drink selection is vast, and the prices are more than reasonable. All in all, it's a great place to stop in for a Blackhawks / Bulls / Bears / Cubs (or Sox..... if you're into that sort of thing) game, have a drink, and get some great food when you're hungry. The best place in the area. Whether you are eating after golf, having lunch, dinner or just having some drinks the place is great. The food is two levels above standard bar food, the pizza is homemade, the bartenders are great as the service is always excellent. Not sure what we would do without this place. read more

I hate to do this because my family has been coming to Open Range for years, however the past few times have gotten worse and worse, and tonight was probably our last time dining there. Our server, Dani, was at our table maybe twice in the hour and a half we were there. We ordered a round of water as well as some cocktails, and 10 minutes later she brought us a pitcher of water with no ice, and disposable throw away cups. We looked around and were the only table with these disposable cups. We then asked her for ice and glasses, which she never brought us. We finally had to ask another server to bring us real cups as well as ice, which she brought quickly. After Dani took our food order, we didn't really see her again. Our food was brought by other servers and our medium steak was so well done and dry, we had to send it back. When they brought the new one (which we asked for medium rare) it was also extremely well done and dry. My sisters pizza wasn't brought out until we were all almost finished with our meal. Besides the steak, we all enjoyed our food, but the service was awful. I try to be as patient as possible because I understand restaurants get busy, but it is just unacceptable to bring a table a stack of disposable cups because you didn't want to get us water. And why there was no ice in the pitcher I'm still not sure. Even after we asked for ice, she still didn't bring any. read more

Service is good, veggie burrito is awesome with a bunch of hot sauce added.. BUT, other items are under seasoned. Shrimp fajitas don't have near enough seasoning and they are so oily but my DH gets them anyway. They changed the fish tacos and its like fish fry fish on a tortilla, also under seasoned and the aioli they put on top is not near enough IMO. Very disappointed with this restaurant. The waitress acted like we were bothering her because she had a come over to our table to wait on us. She never even brought us silverware until after our meal was brought to us. It's funny though because we were watching her on the other end of the restaurant eating with a fellow co-worker and she had silverware. I cannot stress How horrible the service was. The food was okay but I will never ever go back again and would highly NOT recommend this restaurant. The only good thing we had that night was an appreciation for other restaurants with quality service. It's a shame, Due to I live in Sugar Grove and restaurants are limited. The waitress could not even come back for us to pay the bill, I had to go up and try to pay myself. Two thumbs down for this restaurant. This is about the most relaxing dining spot I could envision. From the minute you walk through the door, the hostess meets you with a big smile and offers to seat you wherever you like. Service at my table was first rate only to be topped by the food quality. Fish Fry on Friday night always offers baked or fried or any mix you want - plus its all you can eat at a super price. Give it a try. I also like 2 for 1 pizzas on Monday. The Sunday brunch is a remarkable value for what you get. Love the food and the atmosphere. We eat here quite often. It is fabulous food the staff is always accommodating (heavily spicing the fish tacos and shrimp fajitas).. they do a fundraiser night for our elementary school weekly on weds... the food is great and the price is very reasonable, the veggie burritos are sooooo good. local, cheap and delicious, what more can you ask for! read more

First off, I will preface this review by saying that this restaurant was actually a favorite of mine and my husband's about six months ago. Then, it appeared to have a lot of turnover in wait staff and just didn't seem as good as before, and we took a break from going there. We went back this evening, hoping to have a good experience, though unfortunately, this was not the case. First off, they had a Prime Rib special written on the board when you walk in and on their Specials menu, listed at $13.99. After looking over the menu, that was what I ordered. The first thing I thought odd was that the waitress told me that it came with soup and salad bar and that the soup was chicken tortilla, "very good, I tasted it myself this afternoon and didn't get sick or anything." That made me nervous as I had just spent the better part of the day in an urgent care center with my daughter who had the stomach flu. I couldn't help but wonder if others had gotten sick on the soup here earlier in the week. I proceeded to go up to the salad bar, and when I returned to the table a few minutes later, the waitress was there waiting for me and proceeded to tell me that there was a mistake on the menu and on the board, that the prime rib was actually $19.99, not $13.99. She pulled out another paper menu that showed the $19.99 price and asked if I still wanted to order the Prime Rib. I said no, that I would order something else off the menu, which I did. When she walked away, my husband and I agreed that they should have honored the $13.99 price that they had posted on the board AND had on their Specials menu once I had ordered it, but they did not. The next issue came up when I wanted to order a second drink. I waited a good 20 minutes to do so, and during that time the waitress came to the table next to ours two times and never once looked in our direction to see if we needed anything. After waiting the 20 minutes, I went up to the bar and ordered my own drink from the bartender, paying for it and tipping her. Then, at the end of our meal when the waitress gave us our bill, she had added my second drink to the tab. I had to call her over and tell her that this was a mistake, that I had to get my own drink at the bar. Her only question was, "Did you pay for it?" Really? How could I have gotten a drink at the bar and NOT paid for it??? I told her that, indeed, I had paid for the drink and that she should check with the bartender if she needed to verify it. So, pretty much start to finish it was a bad experience tonight. I can't say the food was bad, though I guess it's too early to know if the soup will make me sick. :( Hopefully, it won't. There has been a lot of turnover at this restaurant since last year, and after working many years managing people in the business world, I am acutely aware of the fact that that is a very bad sign...high turnover. This restaurant clearly has some issues to work on if they want to stay in business. It was not very crowded for a Saturday night, certainly not like the "old days." My husband and I will not be back. And by the way, when we left 45 minutes after the Prime Rib debacle, the board by the entrance still had the Prime Rib listed as $13.99. read more

This is a great-laid-back-neighborhood restaurant and bar. New owners are the best they've had in quite some time. We go there often. Food is really very good - what I call bar food. Amazing food, amazing service! Have eaten in the restaurant a number of times and my favorite are the chicken fajitas and the pizzas. Have had 2 separate surprise birthday parties in the Pine Room. All the food we selected for a buffet was very tasty...barbeque pulled pork, fried chicken, yummy grilled veggies, baked beans and pasta salad. Everyone commented how great the food was and EVERYONE loved the spanakopita (spinach and feta triangles)! Another large party we had there we chose grilled burgers, brats and hotdogs for the menu.. Our lucky night again, NOT. We were graced with the same waitress last night(4\28) as last Friday, our waitress was again in a grumpy mood, she appeared to rather be at the dentist getting her teeth pulled than serve, Hey, get another job and leave if you don't like your present job.We need not look any further than the wall to wave our server over (still with that grump face), The food was great, Fish fry and last nights. We are fairly new to the area and Open Range is within walking distance. It will be so nice when the weather warms up because they have an outside deck to sit out at. We love the family conservative restaurant atmosphere ( kid friendly) and will continue to dine there, because they have a full menu of items that we haven't yet experienced. Oh, also how about first impressions and parting? One of the greeters at the host stand appeared just as friendly and outwardly happy to be working as our waitress. Though I rated low, it is because of the poor mood of our waitress, so many others seem to be at Open Range appeared content maybe even in an upbeat mood. Been here apparently too much. We live close and used to enjoy Open Range, but would have to put up with the poor service. Have been there on many Friday night fish fry's and put in our name to wait for a table, when they have forgotten us. This has happened at least 5 times in the last year. We go there each time anticipating better service next time, but it hasn't happened. Owners or management need to train the staff they have. Twice, coming home from a long trip, I've called in pizza orders about a hour before the kitchen closed and asked to leave on oven, I'll be there (and they know me) the waitress answering the phone "forgot" to put order in. Two separate occasions. There food is very good, pizza's, burrito's, fish fry, eventually the poor service takes it's toll on the experience. We have been at the bar enough to figure out the place has a "clicky" type atmosphere. Bottom line is the poor service. But great food, if your willing to deal with it. Good luck. read more
