Veg Manchurian
Samy B.

Food: It was my first time trying Indo-Chinese cuisine, and definitely won't be my last! The food was delicious, packed with spices and flavour. For starters we had the lamb spring rolls, lollipop chicken and Momo dumplings. I believe it is the same sauce used for the wings, the Momo dumplings and the chili dishes on the main menu. I have to admit I was already quite full after the appys! I then had the Veg Manchurian for my main course. Everything was great and spicy; my fave was the dumplings! Service: Good. There seemed to be only one waiter for the entire restaurant (about 10-12 tables maybe?). It was a busy Friday night so this did make service quite slow at times. However, he did his best and was professional. Ambiance: There was a cozy, familiar feel to the restaurant. They're located in trendy St Henri, and hold their own next to other neighbourhood staples. The decor and lighting was unique and seems inspired by Indo-Chinese heritage. It's a nice vibe for dinner with a small group of friends. Overall this was a very good restaurant and I enjoyed my experience. It would be even more excellent if the chefs added more variety if the flavours of the dishes, and if there could be more staff on busy nights. Still a solid 4/5!

A 5 for the expertly crafted cocktails. WoW! All were exceedingly delicious. Being an Indo-Chinese restaurant I'm undecided whether I like this combination. The lamb spring rolls were better, with two dipping sauces that were excellent. The duck wings while good were too sweet overall. Pork Braisé was plentiful yet again too sweet. Chicken and also Veg Manchurian's were ok. Opt for the fried rice, which did have delicious smoky flavor. Wait staff was very nice, however needs a bit more training. (Don't reach in front of a guest to deliver food to another. Ask if the meal is finished before removing sauce plates.) Would definitely return and enjoy cocktails and an appetizer or two.

Manchurian Chicken Meatballs. Packs some heat. Just awesome!

You walk in and there's a clothing store on one side and black curtains straight ahead. I just stood there confused for a second until someone suddenly appeared and escorted me through the curtains, down a long dark hallway, and into this intimate, dimly lit bar. Turns out, I had accidentally stumbled into a speakeasy. The space is tiny--maybe 6-8 seats at the bar and a long banquet along the wall for 10-12 more people. No menus either. They ask what you like and don't like, then craft a cocktail specifically for you. The pours are generous and the bar is stocked with top-shelf liquor. About a drink and a half in, I realized I needed actual food immediately and had to leave. The staff was friendly, personable, and chatty, and because the space is so intimate, you naturally end up talking with the people around you. Definitely more of a solo or date-night spot than a group hang. Such a cool, unexpected experience.

As far as hipster spots go I actually really like this one…read more They've split the 2 sections now, now one side is the restaurant and the other half is the bar, you can still order food at the bar but they've split the sections into two distinct areas now that only staff can pass between the black curtain separating. It's a shame because I preferred drinking on the now-resto side. Service is decent, nothing spectacular, again I found service on the now-resto side previously better than the service we received at the bar side. Again it's a shame cuz the bartenders on the now-resto side were fkin awesome: tailored drinks and personal caring customer service. Whereas the bar side was just typical 'here's your drink you ordered' nothing more nothing less. What I do really like about this place is I tend to like almost every single cocktail I order here. They change the list regularly so that's fun too 'cuz always new options to choose from. It is pricey and unfortunately the alcohol content is maybe not as strong as one might like for that price point. However, it does allow to try many many drinks in one sitting without becoming a total drunken a-hole so not necessarily a bad thing. Here's a list of all the drinks I've tried here so far and I've adored almost every one of them and would definitely order again: - Frank sinatra - Trinidad sour - Paper plane - "Gina And Cucumber" shooters - Bloody Caesar: steak spice rim for this one is awesome - Nina Simmone - Pinky Swear: meh good hit the spot, but probably the most disappointing of all drinkerie drinks ive had - Redwine: Pepperwood Grove Cab Sauv 12$ good but not worth inflated price for a glass - Cidre Dublin's Pub: delicious!!! My favorite cidre ever so far. - Martini Lychee: hit the spot not their forte but I was craving one and it did the trick. It's not a place I choose first, but I like comin here every few months to enjoy a few cocktails in a chill vibe and hope they don't close anytime soon.

But before even checking in, we had to walk through Bar George ~ and instantly knew we wanted to eat there. We were lucky enough to grab a last-minute reservation, and Julien took a good care of us throughout the evening. His recommendation of the Beef Wellington was spot on (it's already one of our favorite dishes), but this was hands down the best we've ever had. I ordered the lobster risotto, which was excellent with just the right amount of spice. My son had the 10 oz striploin steak with homemade fries (chips), and it was absolutely delicious. I also loved the Canadian touch of coarse salt on the steak, plus the option to choose between Béarnaise or peppercorn sauce. Julien also mentioned their pastry chef placed second in a NY competition, and the desserts absolutely lived up to that reputation. We tried the pineapple and coconut pavlova and the "lick me hazelnut" ~ both beautifully presented and incredibly delicious. We also ordered iced coffee and a latte, and noticed something interesting: this was the second place where we found Canadian coffee to be smooth and mild ~ such a nice change from the often bitter, over-roasted American coffee. Yes, dinner was a bit steep ($300+), but it was worth every penny. Between the rich history, stunning design, outstanding service, and unique cuisine, I would highly recommend Bar George. I would absolutely love to come back!!
