We went to this place late at night last weekend because it was the only restaurant still open on the street. I've tried another Mae Sri location before and it was decent, so I thought this downtown one would be similar. Unfortunately, this turned out to be the worst dining experiences we've ever had in Montreal. The restaurant looks nicely decorated, but it's nothing more than fake aesthetics covering terrible food and service. There were only three tables occupied, yet we were placed at a table with no lamp, sitting in the dark for almost 20 minutes. No one offered water, no one told us to scan the QR code for the menu -- absolutely no service. When someone finally came (in the end she claimed she is Claire and is the manager), her first words were: "Tap water or sparkling?" -- not even a basic hi. After we said "sparkling," she just stood there staring, clearly expecting us to order immediately, without even bringing the water first. We asked two simple questions about the menu, but every time I tried to speak she interrupted, rolled her eyes, and repeated: "Didn't you just say you want pad see ew? What's your question? Do you need more time?" What kind of manager speaks to customers like that? After 30 minutes, the food arrived. Claire literally kicked away a chair from the empty table next to us and slammed the plates in front of us. Completely unacceptable. The food itself was awful. The tom yum soup was white, lukewarm, and full of what tastes like Costco chili flakes -- nothing like any tom yum broth I've had in Thailand. the shrimps on the top were freezing cold. The pad see ew was also cold, extremely sweet, and the noodles on the edges were dried out, as if it had been sitting out for ages. Clearly not freshly cooked, yet somehow we waited 30 minutes for it. Maybe the kitchen was busy fixing the microwave. The final insult came with the bill: $7 per bottle of sparkling water. We asked why the price wasn't disclosed verbally or written anywhere on the menu. Claire once again responded with attitude, questioning "don't you know it's common knowledge?" I've lived in Montreal for over a year -- please tell me which $20-main "cheap fake Thai street food" restaurant considers $7 sparkling water to be "common knowledge"? That logic is outrageous. It got worse when she asked about desserts. (Yes she asked about desserts after we said we want the bill). Also we had already asked about the dessert when ordering, and after claire told us it wasn't available, we clearly said we didn't want any dessert. As there is no dessert menu, and she didn't tell us the prices, we thought she's finally be apologizing for her rudeness. However, she questioned us back: "Have you ever had dessert for free at a restaurant?" Like wtf? Throughout the entire visit, this so-called manager was consistently rude, hostile, and unprofessional. I honestly don't understand how a restaurant with decent Google reviews ends up with someone like this in charge. At this rate, I doubt this place will stay open much longer. By the way, in the middle of our meal, she suddenly asked if we needed chopsticks, apparently just because we looked East Asian. I'm not sure if we should consider this racist. TLDR: Hidden in plain sight restaurant. Beautiful and lush exterior. Cosy interior. Delicious Thai food. So this restaurant is actually called Mae Sri Garden Room. There is no external signage. We were looking for it and walked right by it twice, haha. We went on a Sunday for lunch right around opening and were the first customers, lol. I imagine that when it's busy and the front patio is full, it would be more obvious that it's a restaurant. Their menu is online. You scan a QR code on the table. I'm not sure if they have actual paper menus for people who don't have smartphones or don't have data. I got the Baa Mee Moo Soup ($20). I had originally ordered the Baa Mee Moo without soup/dry but turns out the dry/soupless version has sesame seeds in the sauce. Our server was great and was vigilant about checking with the kitchen when I advised her of my sesame seed allergy. My husband had the Shrimp Pad Thai ($23). My soup had egg noodles, BBQ pork slices, ground pork, pork meatballs, pork wontons, half a boiled egg, yu choy, bean sprouts and a deep-fried wonton wrapper. It had ground peanuts and cilantro on top too. I loved the variety of items and everything was delicious. Except some BBQ pork pieces were too fatty. There were a few lean pieces, but some were way too fatty for my liking. The broth was flavourful and not excessively oily. My husband enjoyed his Pad Thai. His Shrimp Pad Thai had 5 good-sized shrimp that looked plump and juicy. I had a tiny bit of his noodles and the sauce was tangy and sweet. Service was pleasant. The decor was lovely. Quel beau restaurant lumineux grave a leur serre qui fait office de toit. Un menu originale on y vas pour les nouilles et plus. Les drink sont exelent je suggère le London Thai si vous aimez le coco et aussi le violet au goût légèrement anissé. But come here only for cocktails, READ BELOW I went to Thailand 2 times last year, this restaurant serves the most authentic and up to date Thai menu ive ever seen in north America. They even have tum mama. But the kitchen was clearly undertrained for the menu they provide. First, the hotpot was served cold. The piece of charcoal cannot even warm the hotpot, not to mention about cooking the uncooked flat noodles served with the hotpot. Moreover the environment was clearly under ventilated for burning charcoal which poses a carbon monoxide hazard. The piece of charcoal went out after seconds which leaves the hotpot warm overall. I walked in without a reservation and I had multiple options to sit. They asked me which I preferred which I had loved. I always prefer to sit at the bar area as alone at a table is depressing. They have many veggie, vegan and meat options on the menu. The service is also very fast and the food is very delicious. I tried the Paloma, I loved the rimmed glass and the tequila was washed in fat. That was a first for me. I am impressed by the ambience, music and stellar service. The prices are very good and the staff is amazing as well. I highly recommend this location if you are looking for a Thai restaurant in the downtown area. read more

I was so excited to come here and try Thai food in Montreal because I LOVE Thai food however walking up to the restaurant there was no one here and the waiter was absolutely seem annoyed that we even walked in. I asked him to help me with my menu because I don't speak French and he was just there staring emotionless staring at me like here is the English button and walked off without explanation ect ect stale personality. I explain to him that Thai food in America is a little bit different because the American style tend to have different choices, I was asking for certain dishes and I guess that pissed him off. finally we got our food and they totally forgot my daughters soup because I don't think he was paying attention enough to comprehend. That was the first order that we placed so we had to sit around for her to come out after we finished ours . we were not able to eat together. the food is delicious too bad that the staff and service is very poor, bad , stale & unfriendly service. We went to the Garden Room this evening, and were very excited as it was highly recommended by family and friends. However, upon being seated as a party of 4, and ordering our food and drinks, we ended up waiting on only one person's meal, which took over 25 minutes to get to our table, AFTER the other 3 people got their meals. We gave them time, and then after 25 minutes of waiting, we asked a server where the food was. The serve was beyond unenthusiastic and seemed to totally forget about the order. So it took another 10 minutes to finally get 1 person's food, meanwhile everyone else at the table was almost finished their meal. The only thing the restaurant comped was a 17 dollar drink, which seemed to be like pulling hens teeth to even get that. Not only this poor service, and forgetting a whole order, but when we were paying our server was beyond inappropriate and rude. I was not happy with the service, specifically forgetting the order, so I did not wish to tip. Upon hitting no tip on the debit machine, our server named Ben, had said directly to me "Oh, no there is no option for not tipping. If you do not tip, then it comes out of my pay on your meal." Everyone at the table asked him why, and Ben could not give a straight answer. So upon reseting the debit machine for me, I again hit no tip. Ben then turned to me, and said "Where are you from? Cuz you have to tip." I said I'm from Nova Scotia. He reset the machine for me again, and I still hit no tip. He then gets frustrated, and hands me back the machine after reseting it for a third time all because I did not wish to tip him, especially after he had insulted my entire table, lied about the tip coming from his pay, and then asked me where I'm from as if I do not understand what tipping is. Beyond rude, arrogant, and not at all pleased with this place and their staff, specifically Ben. Stay away from this place. The food was OK, but definitely not worth the terrible service and poor attitude of the waiters. Forgetting an order entirely, not checking up on the table while one person was left without food. And then insulting and lying to a whole table and a customer who does not wish to give you a tip for your poor service and attitude. I tip when the service is good, not when I'm given attitude and treated like less than because I'm not from Montreal. read more
