The Coldroom is a fantastic bar and definitely worth visiting. We actually ended up going twice during our trip, and each visit was a little different. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The first time, the music was extremely loud, and it seemed like they were short-staffed.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The bar was completely packed, and there was only one bartender making drinks, so the wait was a bit longer than expected. We decided to give it another try, and I'm so glad we did. The second visit was amazing! The bartender working that night was incredible--she clearly knows her craft and made our drinks quickly without sacrificing quality. Every cocktail was delicious, and the overall experience was much more enjoyable. Overall, I highly recommend The Coldroom. My only suggestion would be that, with a space that busy, the bar could really benefit from having an additional bartender during peak hours. I love a good speakeasy. There's something about enjoying a cocktail in a cozy and semi secretive setting that makes that sip so much better. We popped in here on a Friday afternoon for a drink. The space is quite charming, and we sat at the bar. Our bartender, Sally (I believe was her name) was super nice and helped my indecisive self pick a drink. I'm always torn as a classic martini girl to go astray and get a cocktail, but I always want to try one of the cocktails on a cool menu. Thankfully our bartender helped me try something new and suggested the FETAVEC AMOUR. It had watermelon, tomato, feta, vodka, Campari, Double Jus and sparkling served in a tall glass. Super refreshing, not too spirit forward, and a lovely balanced cocktail. I took a look at the bar's IG and they are an award-winning cocktail bar so definitely make your way there if you love a good drink with great vibes. I get a kick out of speakeasies -- they're such a dorky gimmick at this point but I still like the challenge of first finding them. This one took us a second, it's literally just a door on a strange corner so even Google Maps was a little confused. But once you see it, you see it, then you're lead downstairs to a nice little underground cellar. We went on a snowy December Tuesday so it was pretty dead (though it picked up after 10pm!) but that was fine because seating was plentiful. We ordered a Rice To Meet You and a Joe Peachi. The first was tiki-esque but not too sweet, the second was basically a Negroni with a slight twist. Both nice cocktails, nothing outstanding but solid. The biggest bummer was the lack of whiskey cocktails, but we went during a time of tariff wars and so I fully support Canada icing out the bourbon -- but I did kinda miss it! Cute little speak easy in Montreal. Once you ring the doorbell, you will need to descend some stairs to get to the bar. The server will lead the way. The inside of The Coldroom was dark but cozy. They had bar seating, a few tables, and a booth. I really enjoyed the Rubber Duck theme for the whole menu, and how each drink is inspired by characters in 1970s Montreal. The drink I chose was the Death Mark. I am a huge fan of mint and peppermint. The Death Mark is mint chocolate ice cream in alcohol form. Before dinner last night, we stopped at The Coldroom for a cocktail. At first, we weren't quite sure how to get in--we stood at the front door a bit confused until some patrons came out and told us to go around back, press the button, and wait. Walking down the stairs, I wondered what we were getting ourselves into, but once inside, the vibe was instantly welcoming--fun, chill, and relaxed. Now this speakeasy actually felt like one because it took me 5 minutes to find the entrance! It's a large black unmarked door with no handle to the left of the El Pequeno Bar entrance. Ring the doorbell and look for the duck in the overhead sign. A staff member will come up to get you after a period. You descend steps (I did not see an elevator) to a cozy, rustic underground bar. The menu was so creative - each drink had a duck character and backstory, and all were inventive concoctions. I chose one with peat-y whiskey, toasted oats, milk wash, and raspberries. Unique! I'm so happy I discovered this speakeasy! It was easy to find once I saw the picture of the black door right next to El Pequeño Bar. We pressed the button and waited maybe a minute or two and someone opened the door for us. You walk down some metal stairs and open a freezer door to a very cozy, dark bar. It was not super busy but more people came in as we sat for an hour. Service was excellent and they crafted me a specialty drink of a Moscow Mule with tequila that was very good. They played 90s hip hop which was unexpected and very much welcome. Definitely a great spot for a date or to stumble upon as a tourist. read more

Located behind a hidden door in the old town and down a dark staircase, this basement speakeasy is a can't miss! I've been on the road a lot and was looking for a bar to be my regular spot. I went 3 times over the course of a week and it was truly a highlight of my trip. The bartenders are great and remember their regulars. Cocktail list is creative and fantastic, but if you want a classic just ask. I love a good old fashioned and they delivered in spades. They made some of the best old fashioneds I've had, and with Canadian whiskey at that! Don't come hungry - they have a small snacks menu. Cool underground dungeon sort of speakeasy's as for the drinks they are definitely old school and harsher. The menu is cool and has a variety, but the drinks felt unpolished and just average tasting. It has that classic vibe so I guess it is on cue, but it definitely felt rough and a the drinks were either very strong with not many secondary notes, or it was just straight liquor and hard to really taste anything else. It's been a long time since I've been to what feels like a legitimate speakeasy. I live in NYC, and while there are cocktail bars aplenty -- including those that either currently or formerly marketed themselves as speakeasies -- they rarely feel hidden and tend to have wildly long waitlists because of how un-secret they are. The Coldroom took me back to my first speakeasy experience (which was at a bar in NYC that sadly no longer exists), in that there was initial mystery and intrigue alongside the ultimate delight of finding yourself in a hidden den of good vibes and even better drinks. We came to the Coldroom at around 10 on a Sunday night. After having the obligatory moment or two of confusion when trying to locate the entrance, we ultimately found it, knocked, were greeted kindly by the host, brought down some nondescript stairs and into the bar. The space itself as actually pretty no-frills as far as decor goes, which is unlike the typical NYC speakeasy, which oftentimes is giving swanky, sultry, and intimate. Not that this is a bad thing, but we were feeling a more chill and down to earth vibe on this particular night, so the warn tavern-type energy fit was very much our speed. Though there were a smattering of tables available, we opted to snag a few of the remaining bar seats to be closer to the mixology magic. I constantly have decision paralysis and, while I know a lot about cocktails, I still greatly benefit from being able to consult with someone about my drink order -- for emotional support and expertise alike. Though I was initially worried that the Joe Peachi (Gin - Cinzano Rosso - Campari - Peach - Osmanthus - Cream - Caramel) could be too sweet for my liking based on the ingredients listed, the bartender assured me that this was not the case. She was indeed correct, the drink being a truly singular negroni variation that blew me away. My partner got the Cloak & Dagger (Scotch - raspberry orgeat - lemon - Jagermeister - Grand Marnier), which is not the type of drink I'd typically go for, but it was also outstanding. To finish, I got the Smoking Gun (Scotch - Bay Leaf - rye - Pedro Ximenez - Drambuie - smoked plum - Sambuca). A smoky, sexy, Old Fashioned variation and an absolutely perfect nightcap. read more

My favorite place that I hitup while in Montreal recently! Clients heard I was a cocktail/speakeasy joint kinda guy and mentioned this place to me and my work crew. Located in Old Town Montreal, there isnt any signage and its near an alley way coated with roses. Once you ring the bell, someone comes up and greets you and walks you downstairs. Great crowd of people chilling and having a great time! There was space for our group of 3 at the end of the bar and our amazing server Millie looked out and hooked us up with a table which was very nice of her to accommodate a group with no reservation. There is a cool letter board they have that displays all the alcohols and their price. Menu looked fantastic and there was so many delicious drinking options, but I went with The Golden Ticket (x2), the Cold Fashioned and a dealers choice mezcal cocktail. Golden ticket was outstanding which is why I has 2 of them lol! Its a cocktail that includes Courvoisier VSOP, reposado tequila, lillet, walnut, Salted honey and smoked plum. Worked up an appetite so I tried the grilled cheese that includes bourbon butter and caramelized onions with a side of pickles and chips. Was decent. The bartender, Mildred (aka Millie) is an amazing bartender - very detailed oriented, friendly, and makes perfect drinks. The specialized menu drinks are fun, but the espresso martini and old fashion (using Lot 40 with the damn tariffs causing a bourbon shortage) were fantastic - one of THE best. These days, if you see something described as a speakeasy, you have to wonder how much authenticity there is. Sometimes it'll just be what someone thinks prohibition was like. And then there's the Coldroom. This is probably the closest experience I'll ever have to what prohibition was probably like, and absolutely worth the visit. Yes, the Coldroom is unmarked. You can kind of get an idea where the doorbell is, it stands out in a frame on the brick exterior. We got there around 5:00, right when things opened, so the staff got to us right away and let us in, then down the stairs, through what can best be described as a creepy basement, and then we were there. But nothing about the experience is creepy. In fact, it was easily one of the best places we visited during our trip and would do it again in a minute. We were seated at the bar and since we were the first ones in, we got to chat with the bartender a bit and figure out what we wanted to drink to get the most out of our experience. I mentioned that I preferred drinks on the sweeter side, and I was given suggestions that turned out to be perfect. Don't get too attached to the menu, as it does change, but if you have an idea of the things you like, you'll be able to find something that works. The giant ice cube helped the drink last longer as well. We didn't have a chance to try any of the snacks on the menu, but I definitely would do so in the future. You can tell right away that this is a bar that cares for its patrons, much like a speakeasy would have during the height of prohibition. Even after more people arrived, we still felt like our presence mattered to the staff. We were here for a good time, and we got one, and the staff has a lot to do with that. They could have easily scoffed at us for blatantly being out of towners (from the states, no less) but we had some of the best bar conversations I've ever had. We will definitely visit the Coldroom on our next visit to Montreal, whenever that ends up being. Now that we know exactly where the experience starts (on the outside), we know we'll have an immersive, thoughtful experience, and a long lasting drink to go with it. read more

Once in we were escorted down stairs walking around all sorts of hardware until we entered the bar. The cocktails were excellent the vibe perfect for the setting. My friend and I had trouble finding this place so I attached a photo to help others! Follow the directions and patiently wait after the light has turned red. The had a waitlist which wasn't a problem since they took down my name and number to let us know when they were ready. It was super unique to walk into the basement which was comfortable and casual. It was buzzing with conversations and tightly packed on a Friday night. For drinks we tried their Killer Cactus, Jungle Bird, and Perfect Lady which was sadly disappointing. The killer cactus was tasted like watered down tequila while the perfect lady was far from perfect. Jungle bird was the most bearable but still not good. Overall, it was a great experience with super friendly staff. Not sure if it was an off night or if we poorly picked our drinks but I'm not sure if I'd come again given they really fell off on our drinks. Otherwise would have easily been 5 stars. read more

I've been to the Coldroom a few times. You have to press the red doorbell across from the Bevo Bar. Someone will open the door and let you in or send you a text when there is room. The bar is downstairs behind a large fridge door. They have a bar menu which are mostly appetizers. Those are just fine. However, the main reason to go is the drinks. They have a drink list with descriptions of each cocktail. You can find something familiar and interesting. Ask the bartender, if you are not sure. The drinks are great! Sometimes, they are so busy that there are wall to wall people. If that's what you like, go to the Coldroom! I prefer a little bit of room to have a chat without everyone in on the conversation. The cold room was a cool experience. When we got there, they weren't quite ready for us so we were able to take a walk around the area and stop outside a small bar right upstairs from the speakeasy. It didn't take long before we were actually let in. You have to walk down stairs to go into the basement. It was definitely a hot spot to be at and there were a lot of people. We got sat at a larger booth with another party so they definitely make the most of all of the space they have. The pornstar martini was fantastic! The waiter was great. For our second drink, he asked us what type of flavors and alcohol we liked and had the bartender make us drinks off of the menu. They were good but I still preferred the pornstar martini.
