Such a fun speakeasy and the drinks are amazing! I came twice on my visit and loved both times. The group there are so inviting and friendly. On Wednesday and sundays they also have a burlesque show which was too much fun. You have the option of solving a murder mystery and if you figure it out get a celebratory drink. I will say to figure out the door, go to their website and request the address, the clue is in the email you receive. As an American I was very nervous about going here after reading trip advisor reviews. Others have mentioned that they felt they were discriminated against because they weren't a local and spoke French. Nonetheless, I wanted to check it out and I had a FANTASTIC time! The entrance was so fun to find and is one of the coolest speakeasy entrances I've been to. After entering there is a sign in French that says to wait to be seated and our server quickly seated us. For a late Wednesday night it was not as packed so there were many tables around us. Our server was so kind and went above and beyond to help us with our first visit! She explained the murder mystery game rules and helped us with any questions we had. The game was so fun and a perfect activity for my family since we love board games and murder mystery games. Without spoiling, there's about 6 steps to the game and we made it about halfway through before we got too tired. You can take home the clues you've solved with you and it makes for a great souvenir. This place is so cool! My friends and I love speakeasies and I thought the murder mystery concept was so cool; I've never seen it executed like this before at a bar. Upon arriving to Le 4e Mur, we were a little confused because on the outside they really do try to keep it a secret. Once you figure it out, the vibe inside is sophisticated with lots of seating options and dim lighting. We were a group of 4 and I think that's a good number for the murder mystery experience since you need to order all the drinks listed to get all the clues. Some of the drinks are hit or miss but we had at least one person in our group that enjoyed each one so it worked out perfectly for us. Solving the mystery was bittersweet since they only have one mystery but that means I get to try different drinks next time or just bring different people. Due to my sister's stellar detective skills, we were able to find and gain admittance to this establishment. I have to agree with all of the other reviews-this place is so much fun! Our server, I think his name was Guy, was great! He helped us choose a selection for our cocktails by basically interviewing us on our likes/dislikes. The results were amazing! The bar is decorated as I envision a speakeasy to look like-so much to see. We would have loved to participate in the Murder/Mystery, but it wasn't the first or last stop of the day and there were only two of us. What a great idea! The bartenders are very accommodating and friendly. The murder mystery drinks are good, but frankly, most of the other drinks sounded even better. They're all very unique - you're not going to find drinks like this at a lot of other places. We did the mystery and split the drinks among 3 of us which worked out well to get us all a decent buzz and the desire to advance in the mystery plot made us motivated to keep drinking (good business strategy!). This speakeasy is really fun with a date or with a small group (3-4, maybe 5 if you're lucky) because half of the experience here is playing a murder mystery game. The cocktail menu is a story and the main drinks give you riddles/puzzles to solve. You have to get all the clues from the riddles to solve the mystery. It's pretty fun! Of course, you can skip all of it entirely. I wasn't a fan that it seemed that you only get clues with certain drinks but I could be wrong. The drinks themselves are all very fun and unique whether you play the game or not. I really like the creativity and the way the cocktails look and are presented. There is even a $30 spiked tea for two that comes out of a teapot and you drink from tea cups. Im a big fan of their rum and bourbon drinks. The downside here is the pricing of some drinks. In general it's a tad expensive for the size of the drinks, and even their old fashioned is something like $16 which isn't going to keep me buying it multiple times despite wanting to because it is good! Service is super nice and cheery both times I've been here. I've managed to get seats luckily both times around 9pm without having to wait but you may want to try a bit earlier especially if with a group. I like the overall atmosphere here. Really fun speakeasy in downtown Montreal! To get the address of the bar you need to sign up on their website. Two friends and I showed up without a reservation at 8pm on a Friday and we were seated no problem. I'd say you can show up with reserving before 10 pm. The bouncer let us in and then we realized the inner door was closed. We figured there must be a mechanism to open door and we found a brick in the wall we had to press to enter! Drinks were excellent, they were unique and the menu was well thought-out. With each drink you get a clue to solve a mystery. Ideally you'd want to be a group unless you can drink alot and afford to drink alot. We did a cross word puzzle (very fun!) And then could have proceeded to the next clue but that was enough drinks for us. Unfortunately we didn't catch a show. Apparently there are a couple of cabaret shows throughout the evening. We came here per the recommendation of a bartender we met the night before. We got in without a problem, so it's not much of a challenge compared to other speakeasies I've been too. We were immediately seated, and started perusing the murder-mystery menu. There is a game you can play, but it appears as though you would have to order a lot of drinks, and there were only 2 of us, so we just decided to bypass the murder-mystery aspect. It took quite a while to get our drinks. These are specialty cocktails, though, so that's totally understandable. I will always make it a point to come here when back in Montreal! On a weeknight this place was BUSY - even late at night. Perhaps b/c they have burlesque shows going on (we did not know this going on and were pleasantly surprised!). They do have more than one show a night and we were lucky with our timing that we caught the 2nd show (and got a table inside). There is seating outside the main area (where the main bar is) and then seating in a room more inside where the show is (and another small bar). The burlesque show was amazing ( about 10-15 min). There was a bouncer guy standing at the door and thankfully, my friend speaks French because he asked us a few questions before he let us in. We then had to wait for menus and although unlocking the secret menu looked intriguing, we didn't want to pay $20 Canadian for drinks we didn't really want to drink. Once in the place is a nice small cozy bar with 8-10 tables. We were there on a Saturday evening and surprisingly took only 5 mins to get a table for 2. :) Our server was nice and friendly. The only companion was that when we reached there a booth with 6-8 capacity was available but the host told us that he can't sear us as we were a party of 2 and table has higher capacity so they would not seat us there and asked us to wait till a table for 2 is available. This is a place where you would go for the environment rather than the menu unless you enjoy strong drinks with unique combinations. As a person who enjoys sweeter drinks I was disappointed in the selection. Especially if you want to play the game. Certain drinks come with specific clues. If you want to get all the hints you have to order 6 different drinks. Ordering the same drink twice will result in the same hint being given twice. So you have to try all six of you want the hints. This would be fine if all the drinks were simple enough that they would be enjoyed by the majority. Unfortunately 2 of the 6 were ordered and not enjoyed by the entire table. The Jenny alpha is just plain terrible. The rum and orange juice combo just leaves a bad taste. No one at the table enjoyed this. The maitai was very coconut which made it hard to do anything more than sip. This is unfortunate as it makes the game difficult to play without the risking a bad drink which only sours your opinion of the place. The service is average. The staff is polite but we didnt seek to get the same mystery/lay along with the game kind of attitude from.out staff. It was more like they drop off the joint and thats it. They were however kind enough to give me more orange juice for the alpha Jenny. It still tasted awful but less so. Seriously, dont order this drink unless you really like rum and orange juice! On my first evening, people on the streets told me to go to La Distillerie. I met two amazing bartenders there who pointed me out to this place, Le 4e mur (only a few blocks away). It's a hidden place (though right off the main strip), and if one has been to those type of "hidden-speakeasy bars" you will definitely spot it. Good Luck. Now the experience and the drinks: My bartender, sorry mixologists, for the night was Eddy - one of the best there is. I told him where I'm from and that I'm brand new to the city and just exploring it, and he went well beyond making me feel welcome. He made me some of the best drinks I've ever had and he gave me the insider names of some of the other best bars in Montreal. The bar is absolutely first rate and holds up to many of the bars here in nyc - from the decor, the drinks, the service. But this is always remain one of my favorite bars because of the people. 6 mixologists started this place and you can tell how much heart it has. Many great bars in nyc have lost that heart and gave in. Excellent service, great atmosphere. This speakeasy-like place is unique, from its hidden door to its decor. We went there on Halloween night for the voodoo mascarade party, and had a blast. The jazz band was fantastic and the burlesque show incredible. I love this place for the creative drinks, pimms' cup and hurricane are definitely worth the try. If you're tired of the usual Montreal bars of st Laurent, and want a new experience, this is your place. We missed the burlesque show (gotta get here early!) on Saturday night. According to the bouncer, it's 3 sets of performances, each 5 minutes long. But we came back on Sunday night before dinnertime and got to experience drinking in a fairly empty speakeasy below ground. I had their Negroni #2, which is made with peach liqueur, gin, vermouth rogue, and Aperol (which is less bitter than Campari). The cocktail was strong with only a subtle drop of sweetness from the peach liqueur. I didn't feel like I was drinking sugar and it did not mask the liquor aka my PERFECT drink! I got to keep the playing card that came with the glass as a souvenir. If you're a tourist in Montreal, GET this drink! My favorite part is probably the entrance. I love speakeasies because of their hidden entrances, relaxed atmosphere, and creative drinks. Le 4e Mur (which means "the 4th wall" in French) has a hidden brick wall entrance located behind a detective agency door front. Find the brick to open the wall and reveal the staircase to the bar! Le 4e mur takes the secret drinking spot to a new level. It's modeled after the speakeasies which became popular during prohibition and it does that very well. In summer they also have a terrasse which is hidden from the street and feels very secluded. They make some excellent cocktails which may seem expensive but they are strong so you get value for your dollar. There is a small food menu but make plans to eat elsewhere because it's mostly snack food so it won't fill you up. Getting the address is very easy. All you have to do is visit their website and register. They will then proceed to send you the address and instructions for how to enter. I heard about this bar on a few Montreal blogs and decided to check it out on a Saturday night after seeing a long line outside nearby bar La Distillerie. The entrance is unmarked, so of course I walked by twice before I found it. There was a bouncer in front of the door and he let us in. The vibe is very prohibition-era-speakeasy, with dark and stylish decor. It's the kind of place you want to sit and stay a while, and service was professional and on point. It reminded me of bars like PDT in New York, but without any pretense or attitude. The place was busy and there was a good mix of people, young, old, Francophone, Anglophone, some very casual, some very dressed up etc. The cocktails I tried were delicious and priced quite reasonably around $11-14 each. I could see a place like this in Toronto charging way more. The red lady was a vodka based cocktail that was pretty fruity and sweet. I preferred the other cocktail I tried (forgot the name) which had gin, tea, egg whites, vanilla... Excellent presentation. Each drink comes with a garnish, for eg. one cocktail came with a tea-infused mini madelaine cookie, another came with a tiny cone of popcorn. The drink menu is pretty extensive and I'm sure if nothing speaks to you, you could ask the bartender to come up with something to your liking. There are burlesque shows on Saturdays and some other nights. On the night I was there, it started around 10:30pm with long gaps between numbers. I think they often collaborate with a dance school called Arabesque. The vibe was classy and fun. There was even a clown number (Arabesque has clown classes apparently). The concept and execution of murder mystery theme was done incredibly well! My boyfriend chose this spot and upon arrival, I was already impressed. The secrecy of the entrance was clever (luckily my boyfriend has a sharp eye) and when we were guided to our seats, I really enjoyed what I saw. The tables are quite close to each other, which some might say is crowded but I wasn't annoyed at all. Everything felt cozy and my boyfriend and I had such a lovely date night. I do wish we came with more people because I wanted to solve the murder mystery! The first drink of each page comes with a clue and there's quite a number of drinks to order.
