Came here for a reservation with a big group of 17 for a friend's Bach dinner during our trip to Montreal after doing research and I'm happy to report that it did not disappoint. I wanted to share my experience because their online and in person menu is quite ambiguous and doesn't do justice in explaining their tasting menus. What I really like about this restaurant is that unlike many, they don't make everyone order the same thing. It just requires a minimum of 2 people for the tasting menu and everyone else can order what they please otherwise. The $55 tasting menu is pretty worth it imo. The fact that a drink alone is about $17 as is makes it worth, because it comes with multiple tapas and a drink of choice. The server tried his best to explain everything to us beforehand, but we couldn't help but start to worry during the meal when a few plates came out and we hadn't seen anything for a while. Basically, there are 3 courses, and each course contains multiple items which come out pretty quickly all at once. We started off with lighter apps like edamame, karaage, gyoza, and Japanese pasta. There will be a waiting period before the next course comes out (but don't panic like we did, it doesn't end here). The second course contained tuna poke, a vegetable dish, beef tataki, and takoyaki. There is another waiting period before the third (and heaviest) course comes out. We received pork ribs (a crowd favourite), salmon, and a watermelon salad to end. There were definitely more dishes that I'm forgetting but by the end of it we were all stuffed and pleasantly surprised with the variety we received and unanimously thought it was pretty worth. The restaurant environment is also such a vibe... just a great social setting overall. We had some people in our group that opted out of the tasting menu and decided to share à la carte style, and they also enjoyed their meal and thought it was worth it too. Super fun atmosphere, a family style offering, and drinks to die for. Biirū was a work dinner with a twist, definitely a more fun evening than our usual fare. The vibes are casual, the waiters joke and talk in a more hang out way, and there's no rush to eat and move. They recommend the group meal offering and I can report that it is a TON of food and definitely all their best items. Our colleagues that shared it were the happiest, though they admit they could never hear what was delivered and they are blindly with no reference. I had skewers that I quite enjoyed, though one had enough cheese to last me a week, some of the best edamame (everyone wanted some), and a helping of rice due to my gluten free needs. The cocktails were really something special, definitely a menu you want to drink through. I wanted to love Biirū, but I do admit the reviews around the meal experience and communication from the waiters was fairly accurate. I don't think a few of us would've come here with our allergies had it not been a work dinner. Their understanding of celiac disease was low, like sure I could eat the soy sauce and not react right now, but I will later and that shouldn't be a risk a business presents. Further, we had to confirm 4 times that one dish was made on its own pan due to a severe anaphylactic allergy. The vibes were vibing for real! Our server Jessica is super nice and checked in on us frequently! We were unfamiliar with some of the menu items but she explained everything very well. They serve everything tapas style here meaning small plates that you share with others. Even the bowls are a little smaller portioned, a little harder to share. However I think the hot appetizers like the takoyaki (octopus balls), okonomiyaki (japanese omelette/pancake), and the karage (fried chicken) are the must tries! They are super beginner friendly options that taste super good! Lots of umami flavor and they are perfectly sized and portioned for sharing. I also enjoyed their mocktail drinks. The three in the photo are the three that they have. They are all green haha. I really liked the matcha one, it just tastes like a matcha latte but better! We had a show at place des Arts and we were looking for somewhere to go eat before. A few weeks we had went to Hanzo and they had told us that they are working together, so we decided to give it a try. They have the same menu only a few different stuff. We got the Hasu chicken and we loved the sauce was very good, it was sweet yet spicy. The candied salmon were good, they were fried, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I wasn't a big fan of the sliced beef(I didn't like a cubed beef) nor the pork ribs, I would not get them again(it was too heavy). The restaurant was busy, and our waitress Juliana was really nice, we both had ordered some bloody Ceasar are the beginning and felt like it was watered down or a missing ingredient, she was really nice to make us new ones herself and checked on us so many times to make sure everything was good for us. Food 2.5/10, liked the poke bowl with seaweed wraps and chicken karaage, the skewers were very heavy on sauce impossible to eat and the beef and cheese skewer was a massive blob of cheese wrapped in beef and dipped in a ton of sauce. I couldn't taste the meat from all the sauce it was horrible. Also the herring skewer dipped in sauce was also as bad couldn't taste the fish. Sitting at the bar, I could see lots of clutter, including a dirty mop just sitting in the doorway to the kitchen on the floor. On my final full day in Montreal, I had dinner at Biiru. It is roughly a seven-minute walk from the hotel. It was open for dinner at 5:30 pm on a Wednesday night. I got there at 5:40 pm and it was buzzing with activity. Since it was just myself, I landed a spot at the bar. It is a plus if you are a lone diner. Otherwise, you need to wait a bit if you are a larger party. The eatery has a patio area. I was perfectly happy inside, cooling off. A nice guy at the bar served me during my time at this eatery. I got a Diet Coke and pork gyoza to start. On the menu, it had ramen in soup. However, in the summertime, it's not available. Instead, I got the ramen sarada. It is essentially cold ramen noodles, with ground cherries, cucumber, shiso, cilantro, sriracha peas, nori, and a ginger vinaigrette on all of it. The pork gyoza came first. They were nicely pan-fried. It had a slight spicy kick to them. I loved the scallions. The filling was yummy. I loved them all. My ramen sarada was next. It was my first time having cold ramen. It worked nicely. There was so much flavour in this dish. It was spicy. The textures were different and cool. The ground cherries made this dish pop. The ginger vinaigrette was subtle. I appreciate that it was, as I am not a huge fan of strong ginger. I wanted dessert and got the matcha cake with passion fruit mousse. It was so good! The matcha cake were in cubes. There were crunchy bits under the cubes, which added a nice contrast. The matcha had the right balance of flavour. OMG, the passion fruit mousse was amazing! It was bright and not all that sweet. I loved how creative this dessert was. The washroom is a single stall for women. It is a bit cramped, but was clean. I had a nice experience here. The food was amazing. We came here without booking and were extremely lucky to benefit from a no show. We were a party of 4. After being seated we were promptly given water and a drinks order taken. We had a MR. POPO cocktail while the server explained that it was a tapas style restaurant with Japanese food. We were given recommendations of certain dishes, but was offered a 'tasting menu' to fully experience most of the food on offer. The tasting menu was about $45 per person. All of the food was full of flavour and extremely enjoyable. The food was fresh and well seasoned, along with perfect ingredient combinations. My favourite was the black gyoza and pork rib. Not recommended for groups - read on for why. We were a group of 14 people and due to the size, we all had to take the group menu. Normally this is completely normal, but there was 0 choice in the menu and dishes were shared between groups of 4 - this wouldn't be an issue if these were big plates, but they all had measly amounts of food, including one that were only 4 small pieces of fish. Everyone in the group I asked was still hungry after the 2 hour meal. Certain dishes were also skipped for certain sections of the table for some reason, but still charged. To make things worse, I requested to order from the normal menu to actually have something decent to eat, but the server refused saying it would be too complicated - I even suggested just charging me a separate bill, as if I was alone, and still no go. I would have easily spent $100 or more to satisfy our hunger, but I guess the restaurant had higher priorities. For some reason, the entire cocktail menu was also unavailable - was this also because it would be "too complicated"? The last kicker? Not enough chopsticks as well. Whatever the case may be, I DO NOT recommend Biiru for groups, go alone or with one other person - at least then you'll have access to their actual food. read more

A must for anyone looking for a fantastic Japanese spot in Montreal. I was able to get a reservation for a Friday night for 2 at 8:30pm pretty easily. We called beforehand, indicating we wanted a patio seat (COVID-19). The restaurant doesn't take patio reservations, but told us we'd likely get a seat on the patio at that time - we did, with less than a 5 min wait. The food here is AMAZING. I was beyond pleasantly surprised. Between 2 of us, we split 4 items (along with a side of rice) 1) The salmon tartare is a HUGE must. Initially, it seemed like a small portion but totally worth it, and probably the best salmon dish I've ever had. 2) The beef short ribs were also very good, and was a decently sized portion. I'm not a huge beef eater, but enjoyed how these ribs were cooked and seasoned. 3) Octopus balls - this appetizer-type item was decently sized, and very soft (almost tasted like cheese - in a good way). 4) The Edamame was another must. Edamame is usually pretty standard, but I could not stop eating it because of the unique seasoning used - definitely worth the $4-5. Aside from the 9.5/10 food, the ambience was absolutely great. The patio is gorgeous, cozy, and has terrific music. For a bit of a nicer/fancier dinner, this is a 10/10 spot. I will definitely be back here next time I'm in Montreal. read more

Food ranged from decent to tasty, but service wasn't the best. We were super excited to try Japanese cuisine in a French City especially because of all the amazing reviews I read. We arrived post the normal dinner time so got lucky with a table. I tried calling several times to make reservations but no one picked up the call. I got the abakado and thought the drink was ok. We ordered tartare, poke bowl and pork ribs and they all were delicious, especially the ribs was very flavorful. We finally ended with a matcha cake which was stale and tasted weird. I would say the food was around 3.5 but the service was really 2. Our server attended us just a few times throughout the night and we had to tell her several times to get us silverware. So we waited until the food cold cold. There were several other larger groups that night who were having shots and our sever was having multiple shots with them. We came here on a Friday after work and sat at the terrasse in back. The space felt very trendy and was filled mostly with a younger crowd. We ordered five plates to share for both of us and we left feeling satisfied, but not stuffed. The mushroom okonomiyaki was the highlight of all the dishes we tried with the Chirashi 2.0 coming in a close second place. The Totoro cocktail was strong and reminded me of a drink you might get at a tiki bar. Overall I would definitely recommend this place. I've only visited Biirū once, for about 45 minutes at lunchtime. In the short time frame that I was there, they made a lasting impression. I can say confidently, that the food, service, price and location are great! From their lunch menu, I ordered the Salmon Tartare served with rice and Nori, and it was absolutely amazing! The tartare was perfectly seasoned and packed with flavour. The portion was ideal for lunchtime - not too little, not too much; it was just right. Also, everything on their menu was super affordable. The salmon tartare dish was 13.95. In my opinion, it's a steal for the quality and quantity of food that you receive! When I visited, the restaurant was quite busy. I believe the person that served me was the owner. He greeted me warmly and was very attentive throughout my time there. I appreciated how often he visited my table to check in and ensure that I was enjoying my meal. The decor is very modern and hipster-like. The restaurant is very small and intimate, so I'd strongly advise making reservations. I spotted a decent sized terrace, that I imagine will open as soon as the weather permits. Honestly one of my favourite Japanese spots! It's always packed, their menu is straight forward and you can tru multiple things on the menu. I've been 3 times and they just never disappoint. The service is great and I love that the waiters know the menu. The food is soooooooo delicious. Their spicy salmon tartare is probably my all time favourite. It has rice krispy flakes on top of the rice, its the perfect amount of crispy and spicy. Also their ramen is top notch. I've been to solid ramen places that don't have a broth this good. The beef tataki tasted only the sauce and with a lot of veggies which I find not compatible. Also, I took skewers with bacon ( something called mochi) but it tasted like ricecake. We decided to try out this restaurant which was on our to-try list for a while, and we were not disappointed! First of all the place, decor and terrasse was awesome! We sat on the terrasse right at dawn and the ambiance was perfect...wooden tables, lanterns, big mural of a sumo right on the facade when you go out + big kudos for the choice of music with soul and loungy sounds which was a perfect fit for a relaxed tuesday evening. The staff tries too hard to kick people out of the restaurant so that more guests can get a table, but the way how they do it is just wrong: they literally pulled my dish away from the table even though I am not done with my food, that was really rude. We ordered the salmon sashimi (my fav), the mushroom pancake, the tuna poke, the beef tataki and the octopus balls, all of them are quite amazing. I've never really been adventurous enough to stop and eat at a restaurant without first researching it extensively on the web, but last night, I'm glad we did. After setting out to go to two separate Japanese restaurants and finding that they both weren't accepting any more clients, we were discouraged enough to go home, heat up some leftovers, and call it a night. However, on the way back, I looked up and saw some bright lanterns swinging above a patio - from there, we decided to reroute to biiru. When we entered the restaurant, every table was full except one in the corner, conveniently a table for two. The outside deck was closed for the night (not sure why), which was a bit disappointing at first, but the immediately apparent trendy interior made up for it. Later, I found that even the washroom was cool. Ultimately, the decoration could be summed up as a mix of traditional and classic Japanese gaming culture. Key features included a huge wall mural, pac man neon wall pieces, and a neon lucky cat sign. The service was pretty good considering how packed they were, and we ended up ordering 10-15 minutes after we first sat down. We got karaage; two plates of two skewers each, one of grilled eel and one of chicken thighs; and two house specials, shoyu ramen and the mushroom okonomiyaki. I didn't manage to get a picture of everything we ordered before we ate it all, but my favourites were the eel and okonomiyaki. Personally, I wouldn't order the ramen again as I wasn't a big fan of the pulled pork in the ramen and the flavour of the broth. Amazing service all night and we were quickly seated even though we came in on a Friday Night on Poutine Week. Great music and venue. I loved the decorations in the place. The food was price amazing and the portions were large for the amount. The Japanese style poutine was out of this world. As well their Godzilla Brownie too ! It was great I went with many friends so we split different items and shared. It ended up being a cheap night. The only downfall I do not understand which bathroom was for women and which was for men. I also highly recommend the sake bomb as you do it with friends and enjoy the night. This restaurant is absolutely amazing! We went on a Tuesday evening and the place was packed. It is a bistro and the food is to be shared tapas-style. The food was brilliant and the restaurant catered to my son's sesame allergy extremely well. They were super careful about the preparation and adjusted the cooking to accommodate my son's allergy. Kudos to the chef!! We ordered 4 dishes for two people and it was the best. We ate well and the portion sizes were perfect. We were excited to try this place while visiting Montreal. We made a reservation and were seated early. The food was ok, the black gyoza and unagi were cold and the edemame was not seasoned. Fortunately, the takayaki, my favorite, was hot and good. The service left much to be desired. hello friends, It's been a while I know, lots of drama going on behind the scenes, anyways. Maybe getting back to writing reveiws will be therapeutic for me so here goes... We went here a few months back, they had just opened like the week before and we thought well it's always Kazu or Imadake, it's time we found a new izakaya to add variety, and so Biiru pops up... We had no rsvp, but we got a table. Which was nice. We ordered a whole bunch of things, from ribs, shortrib, soba noodles, gyoza to okonomiyake, fried chicken and yakitori. The only thing we couldn't get was ramen, which they didn't have yet. I told the waitress sarcastically, you expect me to come back for the ramen? I don't think so. But in the end I told her since the food was so good I would come back to check out the ramen. The single best dish was the ribs, fall off the bones, juicy and tender, a little on the sweet side, but since we were four, I only had 2 pieces and the sweetness didn't get to me. The second best thing was the soba noodles which had some bacon bits and kimchi dressing which was easily the most original thing I've had this year. The rest of the food was very good also, but nothing stood out like the ribs and the soba, we finished with a sake bomb and some japanese cheese cake. The place definitely has ambience. I booked this restaurant as a plan B since Imadake was fully booked for Saturday. I must say our group of 10ppl were not disappointed. This izayaka is a gem, tucked away in the corner street and all you see is a Japanese flag glowing. Decor is super edgy and artistic, nice ambience, tint more trendy than a bar. Very enjoyable place but not authentic. More like Americanised Japanese food but the taste is great. The portions are small finger food style and range from $9-$14. We took fried chicken with onion sauce ($9), great batter and tasted superb. The short ribs (~$12) were also delicious and very tender. We also took Salmon Candied ($9) which was warm and cooked to perfection. Their serving speed is really fast, food comes alnosti instantaneously. Try their cocktails, mostly original recipes so you won't get them anywhere else. We tried Abacado (or something like that) which was an avocado blended cocktail, had mild spice tones but a great drink in my opinion. A cooler drink was the Oseno (or something like that) which had a blend of asian fruits (kiwi, guava and the likes). Enjoyed both the drinks. It's better to make reservations beforehand. All in all, great place but not a Japanese place. More like an American shack with japanese themes. read more
