if you've seen the documentary "jiro dreams of sushi". This is the trend started by Jiro in a subway station in Tokyo. The customer comes in and the chef serves him a tasting menu of sushi items and other small bites. Omakase sushi experience. This is the first one of it kind in Montreal. 275$ per person. Arrive on time, dinner starts on time if you're late you miss out... As we arrive they take our coats and get us seated, instructions are given about phones and pictures, no flash and silent phones. we are seated around a rectangular u shaped bar, we were 11-12 but it can seat 15-16.The open kitchen behind the bar is curtained, when dinner starts the drums roll and the curtains rise slowly, the show is about to start. The whole meal is an experience, an orchestrated dance of balanced service with attention on detail and precision. the meal lasted two hours, and service flowed never stalling. it was never rushed but before you know it, it was over. And you pay and leave, no lingering... it's a bit rigid and structured. I very much enjoyed the experience as a whole, though the food, some of it was amazing, some were just ok, and then a few i din't like... though at 28 servings, it's practically impossible to please everyone on every dish. A matter of taste and opinions, the cooking was on point and the ingredients were fresh and of high quality. I have posted pictures of every dish below, and a small impression of each dish... marked with * to *** depending on how much i liked the dish. Mostly the one * is because I don't like the ingredients or dish not because it wasn't good. A few dishes got no star hihi. Dicon and mollusk: nice contrast in texture * Chawanmushi with crab: soft and subtle and sweet crab flavour *** Bonito sashimi: like tuna but firmer * Trumpet fish: good texture * Japanese hairy crab: crab is delicate and sweet ** Yellowfin maguro: soft texture melts in your mouth ***** best dish Fish roe wrapped in shiso fried: like the shiso, fish roe weird * Belt fish carpaccio with turnip: mild flavour sweet broth * Uni two ways: love uni but nothing new here ** Black cod white ginger root: very subtle seasoning, good contrast *** Golden eyed snapper: good texture *** Mackerel in vinegar: Don't like mackerel * Amberjack Shabu shabu kampachi: good fish nice sauce ** Fried lobster with hidalgo citrus: good contrast, fresh lobster, nice subtle citrus flavour, delicate and refined *** Sea weed broth miso soup: good miso, again just miso * Fluke with monkfish liver: expected a good contrast, but didn't get it * Miso and black bean and cucumber: Looked simple tasted really good *** Japanese sweet potato with butter: rich, sweet, comforting and satisfying *** Torched Hokkaido scallop with miso: smokey flavour, nice contrast and well seasoned *** Otoro tuna: so good *** King salmon wrapped in Japanese raffish: nope, vinegar was overpowering, did not like... Wagyu mustard seed black salt: well seared, too bland * Donburi salmon otoro rice bonito flake wasabi: nope, fishy roe, fishy salmon, didn't like the contrast... Salt water eel with roasted sesame seeds: Love eel, the roasted sesame really made this fly *** Tamaro with white fish: soft texture but too sweet, fish was lost * bone broth ramen with gold flakes: just broth and ramen. bold uncrowded flavours, deep rich broth and perfect noodles harmonize, unexpectedly amazing, and that's saying much since I don't like ramen that much *** Matcha opera with Crown melon: Meh, the crown melon supposedly costing 100$ per fruit, was unimpressive, maybe I didn't get a good piece, matcha opera cake and cream layers too dense * Matcha tea: serve ceremonially, not a fan of matcha * The most memorable was the yellowfin tuna nigiri, perhaps the best piece of sushi I've ever had. favorties are the Lobster, black cod, eel with sesame, ramen, torched scallop, chawanmushi, and miso black bean cucumber. I would go back, for special occasions... nice experience. The menu changes periodically.

They say on their website that "the show" will begin promptly. They're not kidding, this is a culinary show! The entire evening was thoughtfully designed and impeccably executed. We were greeted on the 'red carpet' outside. Upon entry, the "curtain" surrounding the preparation area is closed, so it does feel like entering a theatre before the show. The sake selections are limited but of high quality. The show begins with a sung prayer from the culinary team behind the curtain, setting the stage for what is to come. What follows is dish after delicious dish of top-notch ingredients prepared well. I also appreciated that the team is serious, but not stuffy. To quote a friend of mine, they take what they do seriously, but they don't take themselves seriously! It was also delightful when one of the chefs played the violin to serenade a person celebrating her birthday. The executive chef joked, "yeah, I can do that, too." I can't remember the names of everything we had, but I did take lots of photos! I would love to return; it was worth every penny.

Resto Okeya Kyujiro, located at 1227 de la Montagne, is the first Japanese Omakase restaurant in Montreal! Omakase translates "I will leave it up to you" (I.e. the sushi chef) to cater an astounding 20+ course sushi dining experience using the finest ingredients. The restaurant seats on average 10 people around the chef's station to truly experience how each dish is prepared as it comes to life. Each dish comes from a particular region of Japan and has a deep history interwoven in it. There are two services available for reservation including a lunch and dinner service. It is suggested by the restaurant to reserve one week in advance especially for weekends. The whole experience lasted around 3 hours. Cost: per person ~200$. The menu I sample consisted of: (source: Resto Okeya Kyujiro -menu rotates seasonally or based on available ingredients): Sawara warayaki(Spanish mackerel, smoked with straws) Whelk shell, white radish, Japanese taro Chawan-mushi(steamed eggs, horsehair crab) ****** Shimaaji(striped jack) Kinmedai(goldeneye snapper) Gindara saikyo-yaki(black cod, white miso, pickled ginger) Tempura with Shirako Uni(sea urchin) Amaebi(sweet shrimp) Battera(pressed sushi of mackerel) Akami zuke(red part of tuna, marinated in soy sauce) Hirame(Flounder),monkfish liver Otoro(most fat part of tuna) ******* Morokyu(cucumber, wheat's miso, black bean) Tempura with lobster with Sudachi(japanese lime) Aradashi miso soup (base of shellfish, fish bone) Wagyu beef from Miyazaki Rice with baby snapper, ikura(salmon roe), fat tuna, bonito freaks Anago(salt water eels) Tamago(japanese omelette) Seafood ramen Mont-blanc with crown melon, kaki(persimmon) Matcha Definitely one of my top fine dining experiences in Montreal !

The best Omakase in Montreal is worth traveling for. The service is awesome. It is beautiful theatre atmosphere. I will go back again.

We went to Okeya on a weekend evening last summer. They are one of the only restaurants in Montreal currently serving Omakase style sushi. We had previously ordered their takeout boxes during quarantine and we liked how fresh and meticulously prepared they were. The Japanese word "Omakase" means "I leave it to you" (according to Google). The chef surprises you with a carefully crafted menu consisting of 20 small courses that balance each other out perfectly. It is much more of an experience and a show as you get to learn about the ingredients and watch the chefs prepare each of the dishes. The savory part of the meal was an assortment of light traditional Japanese eats, some sushi as well as cooked meat and fish dishes. The traditional Japanese dishes include a delicious omelet dish, handmade noodles in a clear broth and a seafood rice bowl with caviar. Sushi was the focus of the meal and every piece was absolutely delicious. You could taste the high quality and the freshness of each fish. The most outstanding ones for us were the monkfish liver, the uni and the sweet shrimp. As for the cooked dishes, the grilled fish was perfectly cooked and flaky. The grilled Wagyu beef was also buttery and tender. The dessert was a mango mousse served with some fresh fruits imported from Japan. The dinner is concluded with a traditional Japanese tea ceremony performed by their in-house expert on Japanese culture. The restaurant is set up in a square with seating on the edges and the kitchen in the center. To ensure every customer can be seated next to the kitchen, they only serve 15-20 people at a time, which is done twice a night. They work on a reservation only basis. The omakase dinner has a fixed price per person of $250 before tax and tips. The meal took around 2 hours. The service was amazing and we would definitely come back as they said their menu is constantly being updated. They were not serving alcohol at the time of our visit, but mentioned that they plan to introduce different sake pairings that will take the entire experience to the next level. Best sushi in Montreal and in the top 3 restaurants I've eaten at in the area, hands down. Incredibly fresh, delicious meal. It's quite expensive (200$ fixed price menu per person) and they do not sell alcohol. It's a unique experience. All customers come in and eat at the same time (maximum 12-15 people per sitting, 2 sitting per nights). The 'show' part of it was perfect in my eyes - exciting to watch, while not too over the top. The pacing at which they gave us the food was just right. I can't wait to be back and introduce more people to it! Bravo! Note: You need to make a reservation for this - and it tends to be booked way ahead of time, so plan ahead!

Where in Montreal can you enjoy an Omakase experience, which literally means 'I leave it up to you' in Japanese, where the chef selects and serves seasonal specialities? A few places, but will it be 'Washoku' and delivered in a theatrical atmosphere with artistically choreographed movements? Note: Washoku 和食 is another word for Japanese cuisine Where 和 means 'Japan' or 'harmony,' 食 means 'food' or 'to eat'. While we wait for the pandemic to subside and ate allowed to dine-in again, you can sample some of the harmonious and balanced cuisine of Owner Chef Takuya Matsuda, chef Hachiro Fujise, sake sommelier Kuniko Fujita and many more from of the Okeya Kyujiro team such as Chef Aiko. Omakase Kaiseki Bento Box: - Grilled Lobster with Sea urchin - Grilled Black Cod with Saikyo-miso - Wagyu Beef Kado-Maki (華道巻き) - Sunomono (季節のフルーツ仕立て) 'Seasonal fruit with crab and scallop' - Nishime 'Simmered root vegetables' - Edomae Style Bara-Chirashi (Edomae style egg, Bluefin tuna Toro, Salmon roe and Seasonal fish) - Today's Tempura (shrimp and seasonal vegetables) Note: Only 10 kaiseki are made per day to ensure consistent quality. First come first served! Orizime Sushi Bento Box: 18 pieces of sushi including - 6 kinds of Omakase Nigiri. At the time, we tried Anago (freshwater eel), Bluefin tuna, Kinmedai, Shima-Aji Striped jack, Sea urchin and Salmon Roe. - Pressed Sushi - Fotomaki - Toro Taku (chopper Bluefin tuna) - Kampyo (dried gourd roll) - Edomae-style omelet Both options are available for takeout starting this Friday at the grand opening!

A beautiful, new Omakase restaurant at the heart of downtown Montreal. I've ordered the OMAKASE KAISEKI. It's currently one of the two meals which are being served by the restaurant. OMAKASE KAISEKI contained the following dishes: * Grilled Lobster, Grilled Black Cod with Saikyo-miso * Wagyu Beef Kado-Maki * Sunomono (Seasonal fruit with crab and scallop) * Nishime (Simmered root vegetables) * EDOMAE Style Bara-Chirashi (Edomae style egg, Bluefin tuna Toro, Salmon roe and Seasonal fish) * Today's Tempura (shrimp and seasonal vegetables) The quality of the fish is outstanding and each dish is an explosion of unique flavours. They are currently making a very limited amount of dishes per day, so it's recommended reserving your order early. Also please note that the dishes contained in the meals are subject to change on a daily basis, since it's an Omakase (Chef's choice).

One of the best meals I've ever had in my life. The entire experience was amazing -- the service, the presentation and, most importantly, the food. Would come here over and over again if I could.

I've tried tons of omakase restaurants in San Francisco and SoCal and other states as well but this is the only place that gave me the best traditional performance. I'm glad that they still keep the formal traditional way to welcome, serve, and goodbye. I took my mom here for her bday and it was more than what we expected. All the fresh ingredients, extreme professional service and attitude. Special thanks to the two chefs and three incredible employees. Arigato gozaimasu ka.

Very good sushi done the authentic way unlike most sushi places in Montreal. Brings me back memories of Japan. Due to Covid restrictions I could only get takeout, bit will surely return the the dining room is open.

I tried the Snake roll, edamame, and requested an avocado/ cucumber roll which they made for me. The rest of the group tried the rainbow roll, chefs choice Maki combination, chefs choice sushi combination, tonkatsu pork, and the beignets for dessert. Let me start off by mentioning the incredibly kind service we received from the hostess, server, and staff the entire night. On an incredibly busy Friday night, they maintained their patience as the restaurant was completely booked, and were kind and pleasant in every interaction. The restaurant itself is beautifully located in downtown, clean, and spacious. You do not feel rushed to eat. The food was so good we have decided to go back for dinner one more night before traveling back home. The vegetables and fish are fresh, the portions are perfect yet generous, and overall, id rate this restaurant a 12/10. Highly recommend if you're in Montreal and looking for good food.
