I would say in brevity that I am humbled, honored, and just blown away at what I experienced in this establishment. The best part? I took a beautiful long drive to get there, I took a chance I'll never regret (and will relive as much as I can), and I got to share it with 2 ladies I adore.
In the realm of gastronomic discoveries, I, a connoisseur molded by years in the Pacific Northwest farmlands and a past life in the heat of LA kitchens as an aspiring professional chef in my 20s turned foster parent and single dad (which confined me to corporate America and consulting before realizing said dreams), chanced upon an extraordinary Thai culinary haven that transcends the mere confines of a just a Thai restaurant. Rather, this is what EVERY Thai restaurant should strive to be.
Please let me explain, as I've had time to truly contemplate this experience over and over again. The enchantment commenced as the flavors unfolded, reminiscent of the captivating essence I encountered in the bustling streets of Bangkok or during cherished moments with my brother's mother-in-law ("Yai"), who wields her own custom pastes and grows her own ingredients, having lived most her life in an idyllic village.
Nestled inconspicuously, even the urban giants of Los Angeles, New York and Bangkok failed to rival the meticulous artistry and robust flavors orchestrated by the culinary agape at Ono Thai. The chef, akin to a maestro of an epicurean symphony, engaged in animated conversations with regular patron in between the amazing dishes and aromas leaving the kitchen, their smiles mirroring the experience.
Drawing from my rich background as an aspiring chef and steward of farmland (the taste begins in the soil and love for the earth after all), my palate attuned to the nuances of fine ingredients and well-conceived dishes we reveled in this 1.5hr meal. No, experience.
As someone who once donned the chef's apron, and a lover of all things food (especially Thai, Viet, South Asian, Middle Eastern, South American and Mediterranean), the meticulousness of the preparation, down to the homemade sweet/sauces sweet and sour (nam jim) and peanut sauce I politely requested (begged), did not escape the group's discerning taste buds.
I say this not to boast but to say I am so passionate about ingredients, service and food experiences that can take people to another place and away from their worldly worries, if even briefly. My diverse professional journey has encompassed roles not only as a former chef but "secret shopper" and assistant in the realm of executive services, tech and even supply chain, and I can attest that this establishment is a paragon of loving kindness, thoughtful precision and nothing more than unwavering dedication, leaving no culinary stone unturned. Not one hesitant to wield an honest and at times harsh critique, I can more than assure you, this is a genuine five-star affair.
Allow me to dispel any notion of hyperbole; the taste and flavors encapsulated within these walls are a RARE gem I wish could be collected, and was honor to savor, on the island's culinary landscape. A return is not a question of if but when, as we plan to indulge in this reverie as frequently as time permits. I won't experience Thai cuisine like this anywhere else, all the more reason to save for more food whenever we visit. Cheers, bravo and hat's off to exquisite experiences and culinary escapades discovered here!
Even the Thai iced tea was a force to be reckoned with, among the best I've ever had (yes I ordered one for the ride home). As we left, the owner/chef could be seen beaming with joy, sparked in receiving delivery of a beautiful tree, presumably another wellspring of herbal ingredients for forthcoming masterpieces.
Not merely a critic but a fervent advocate for the symphony of flavors and love poured in, I just had to find another way to say Thank You for your hard work- I have some inkling of what this must take
