This place has gone way downhill, service-wise. One World used to have such great staff. For example, I had a party of probably 20+ folks with some vegans, some omnivores, with picky eaters & special orders in both categories. The server didn't even write down our order, she just memorized it and brought everybody's food AND drinks with a grand total of zero mistakes. Fabulous service and great food. But that was a few years ago.
Fast forward to last night. A dozen of us were celebrating a friend's birthday. The food was good, as usual. Then the check came. (Spoiler alert: From the time we first got the check to the time we were cleared to go, an hour had elapsed. AN HOUR. It took longer to pay for the food than it did to order & eat it.) We were told that we could not split it up into separate checks, but we could pay with separate cards. Okay, fine. The dozen of us passed it around and wrote our name or initials next to our items, and put our cards in the holder. My tea wasn't on the slip, so I wrote "1 hot tea" next to my name. The server brought took it all to the register stand, ran our cards, then brought it back to tell us that we couldn't do it that way. We have to calculate our total and write that next to our names. So we did. He took it all away again and brought us our receipts for signature. Many of them were wrong, and he charged me over $20 for my tea. I pointed out the mistake and he explained that he thought I was picking up the rest of the bill. Not sure how "1 hot tea" translates to "charge me the rest" but then, I'm not the expert here. He took the cards back again to fix the errors and came back to tell us that we were $24 short and he didn't know why. Someone at the table figured out that the auto-gratuity & sales tax was about equal to the missing amount, and since we had totaled up only our food (assuming we would add tax & tip later) that must be the problem. (At no point did he tell us that our table's auto-gratuity & tax was included in the "missing" amount.) So the server brought us a clean copy of the check and asked us to just write our name next to the food we ordered and he would do the math. You know, that thing we wanted to do the first time around.
But that wasn't the end. Oh, no no. That would be far too simple. He came back to tell us were $91 short on our $134 check, after we gave him $38 cash and several cards. Two or three people separately asked him if we were short $91 or if we had paid $91. He insisted we were short $91, which was mathematically impossible based on what we had given him. He got flustered and took the cards & receipts back again. This time, he must have asked for help because someone else came to our table to apologize and explain that we had paid $91 and were short the rest. Turns out one of our party was in the restroom when everything was divvied up the second or third time, and that was the missing food. Okay, cool. Fixed. Except the server came back to tell us we were $5 short. Which we weren't, because all food was accounted for.
Someone else came to our table (manager, maybe?) and explained that we were not $5 short, but we were $2 and some change short, most likely due to rounding error since the tax & tip were included in our $134 total. (Side note: I think this is the reason the server refused to split our charges out, because he would lose the 18-20% auto-grat on a large party check. Though if he had just brought us our correct receipts the first time around he would have gotten at least that much in voluntary tips.) Cards were taken again, everything was eventually figured out, we paid, and we were finally free to leave. An hour after this debacle had started. At this point, multiple holds had been placed on our cards and it's going to take a few business days for them to clear or fall away. Awesome, because who needs access to their money, right?
I've been to One World many times, sometimes for brunch with a friend and sometimes for birthdays or other celebrations with 15-30 people. I will never go back again. I'll head over to the new Grindhouse juice bar at St Paul & 25th for fresh juice and light food, or go to Land of Kush for vegan comfort food. Both places have good food and superior service. Sticky Rice has vegan options and can accommodation a decent-sized group. But for One World Cafe, this was the last straw. read more
