Great little diner type restaurant, but with a fine dining twist. Really glad to have found this place! I came on a recommendation and was instantly impressed. Recently saw that it got a nice right up in the Times, so Im sure many more folks will be grabbing a seat at the counter. I came for lunch, however I'll be back soon to check out the breakfast menu. It is located just across the street from the entrance to Playland Park, which means you can go for a stroll along the boardwalk after you chow down. I tried the tomato soup special and built my own burger. The burger was scrumptious and very well cooked. Parking is a little tight for this location out front, but there is a lot around back if you go down the side street behind the market next door. And think about riding your bike because the roads around here are very bicycle friendly. Looking forward to making this a regular spot on my future brunch adventures :) read more

I have to say. Each time I've stopped here to eat it was well worth it. I'm a field tech and it's hard finding a good meal on the road. Burgers are just burgers, right? Wrong. I've been to On the Way Cafe twice. We've had very good meals both times. The space is cheerful and is a bit more upscale than the usual breakfast spot. It's not a big place. We dined there early Sunday morning both times and did not experience the crowds that other posters have commented on. We have found the service to be excellent both times. The waitstaff was attentive and frequently offered refills for beverages. The coffee is a step above that of most other places. The blueberry pancakes are terrific and worthy of all of the praise that they have received. The other food has been very good and well prepared. The prices for omelettes and organic foods are definitely more that that of the corner diner, but not out of line with places like City Limits. We've been very happy with OTWC and plan on going back. It's not the cheapest place for breakfast, but for a couple of bucks more than a greasy spoon offers more of a restaurant or cafe vibe. Was in town for work and my friend found this spot up for us, both had never been. It was a pleasant surprise. It is quaint but with charm, with both indoor, outdoor, and bar style seating options. The ambiance is comfy and welcoming but has a higher ceiling so you don't feel cramped. It was a little hard to find *it is behind the gas station* but was TOTALLY worth the little hunt. The menu is deceiving...you think you're ordering this normal American food and then we got offered the eggs in purgatory. Love the sense of humor and wowza YUMMY! The veggie wrap was INSANE. These are the best pancakes I've had in my 18 years living in Westchester. I've searched long and far for that just right combination of golden brown and fluffy cakes, and On The Way delivers. Big time. The service (on the phone and at pickup) was great. They were friendly and welcoming. The coffee was really good too. I actually called them back to tell them how great the food was. We stumbled upon this out-of-the-way place quite by accident a year or so ago and have enjoyed a few yummy breakfasts after birding outings since then and previously rated the place 5 stars. However, today we had a strange experience at the place and feel we may never be going back. We arrived and waited to be seated. There were many empty tables, but they were all set for 4 persons and there were only 2 of us. We were told we could sit at the counter or it would be a long wait for a table. I dislike counter seating (something about the high stools is uncomfortable for my bad knee) but we were looking forward to "eggs in purgatory" and there didn't seem to be any other choice. Though, I was a little annoyed at the restaurant for not letting us have one of the many empty tables. We sat at the counter without any service. While waiting for a waiter to show up, I had time to dwell on how uncomfortable the counter seat was and also noted that a couple that came in after us were seated at one of the tables! We got up and told the guy who had seated us that the counter seating was too uncomfortable. He said something like "okay" but did not offer us a table, so we shrugged and left a bit mystified by why we were unable to sit at a table today when other couples could. read more

Food options range from pancakes and omelettes, to burgers and enormous pastrami sandwiches. The staff proudly incorporates fresh locally sourced ingredients, and they put care into their food. This. This was my $13 omelette from this cafe. It was terrible. The 'home fries' were incredibly over seasoned and way too salty to eat. I would have asked for something else except the waiters never came to our table. My husband had to wait 15 minutes for another cup of coffee and no one bothered to bring me more water.The eggs were ok but nothing on this plate screamed cafe style care or presentation. We tried stepping out of the box with a different brunch spot, but this was very disappointing. And I feel that it should be rated $$$ instead of $$. Insane. We just moved to Rye recently and decided to try this place after hearing good things. Interior is very cute. We both ordered egg omelettes with hash browns and toast and a side of blueberry pancakes. Omelettes were good, pretty standard, but the hash browns were tasteless and not good. The best thing we had there was the blueberry pancakes. Portions were on the smaller side but they did use fresh organic ingredients. I had the Tuscan sunny side up eggs which were delicious - crispy Italian bread brushed with olive oil, topped with ham and sunny side up eggs with some spices on the top - red pepper/chili flakes. Only semi-disappointment with the food was the home fries - way over seasoned with salt/paprika. My husband and I stopped by on our way back from the airport. So glad we did. It is a tiny cafe right off a busy street. I ordered the lump crab and goat cheese omelette which was really great. The potatoes though that come with it were the best. My husband ordered scallion and pancetta with eggs which was also great. On the Way Cafe is a remarkable small breakfast and lunch joint in Rye. I have gone once in the morning, another for lunch, both times during the week, when it's not too busy. The coffee is spectacular; better than any diner I've had in recent memory, or other large coffee establishment. They make fresh pots, and you'll occasionally you have to wait for your cup of awesomeness. That's a good thing. They offer cream for the coffee. I have had two dishes. The fried chicken. Perfectly crispy, nicely seasoned, and moist. It's like they'd transported a bit of the south up here to Rye. French fries were seasoned well and delightful. A win. The second time, an omelet. Again perfectly cooked; and the hash browns were also crispy. More subtle and less greasy than other places, and I'm convinced that they use high quality eggs. And of course, this is reflected in the price. Good food should, by nature, cost more. The service, cheerful and attentive. Cash only, but they have an ATM. read more

I was in Rye for just the morning to meet with a friend -neither of us knew the area so we did a Google search for a restaurant that was open and within 10 minutes of the train station. I picked On The Way Cafe because it is only open for breakfast and lunch. To me, a restaurant has to be really good if the owners can call it a day before dinnertime. We were not disappointed! The back entrance isn't the prettiest thing but once we were inside, we were welcomed by the smell of fresh scones baking in the oven. The menu offerings for brunch were standard (minus Egg's Benedict - is it even possible for a brunch place to legaly operate with Benny on the menu?) but all excellently done. I decided to live dangerously and try one of the day's specials - an omelette with crab and goat cheese. I love goat cheese but had never had it in an omelette before. Consider me converted. Service was fantastic and friendly. Decor was comfortable and simple. I don't have any reason to return to Rye anytime soon but I may be back just for On the Way Cafe! Lunch is also very good, as we enjoy the grilled chicken wrap and salads. Burgers are supposed to be very good as well.
