I recently purchased a new pocket knife and was looking for somebody who could take the factory edge and make it as razer sharp as I knew it could be. Patti's website stated she sharpened hunting knives and other edges so I figured my knife with its 3.2" blade shouldn't be a problem. Patti was polite enough at first but became a little standoffish when I asked her if she could sharpen my knife. I could immediately tell she didn't want to sharpen it. She mentioned a previous Yelp review and explained that after that person she doesn't like to take pocket knives. I asked her why the poor review to which she replied "I don't know". Later reading on Yelp revealed that she marred the blades finish when she put it in the clamp. Still she took the knife and cut a few slices of paper with it. As I previously stated it still has its factory edge and could easily cut the paper, so she handed the knife back to me stating the edge was still good, and to come back once it had taken a little bit of abuse. While I understand her caution with the previous bad reviews I felt mentioning it was a little crass. I also got the impression she didn't want to deal with my single knife when the guy ahead of me had just handed her a sack full of cutlery presumably from a nearby restaurant. I wish I could speak to her workmanship as I feel she would have done an excellent job in bringing my knife to its full potential. I will gladly bring my own kitchen knives to her if she is ever in the north shore area as that seems to be her speciality. But for single pocket knives its probably better to just get your own whetstone and do it yourself. read more

So if you have one of those trendy, expensive Japanese knives, she can get the angle right. Having researched the subject online, this will give you a much sharper and longer-lasting knife edge than using one of those lazy electric sharpener (which is what most of the shops that sharpen knives use). If you are lucky enough to have some serious kitchen knife art, I would definitely recommend that you have them sharpened by Patti. Not cheap at $15 for a big blade, and $10 for a small, but worth it to me. But they will last a good while (she recommend the "tomato test" to determine when to get them sharpened again). She can also sharpen your serrated bread knife. You will find her parked in a distinctive white utility van (has a air circulator mounted on top and a sign on the rear door) outside of Whole Foods, etc. Get there early and come back later to pick up your knives. She turned around my Chef's knife and two pairing knives in 30 minutes (while I was distracting her with chatter). They are slicing paper like it is butter now. I saw Patti for the past year or so at different farmers markets and have always forgotten to bring my knives. I always admired that she seemed fussy from watching her, and she has a lot of money invested in her sharpening system (im a knife geek to an extent). She really takes her time and cares about the product her puts out, and ultimately her name is attached to. This weekend I emailed her on Saturday to see if I could drop my knives off and beg for them back before Christmas. I knew this was a tall order, and expected a higher price, or lets of groveling. She responded right away and said NO problem! I met her at Farmaggios Kitchen in Cambridge, dropped the knives off Sunday and she said she would call me when they were ready. The next day @ 9:00 a.m. "they're done!" was the email. WOW!!! The knives came out great, the angles are both the same, nice shiny edges, and no odd scratches on my blades. I dropped off roughly $700 worth of knives and scissors, and I can honestly say I wont take them anywhere else. Patti travels to several select summer, winter and holiday markets. I recently had my knives overhauled for the upcoming holidays and they are sharper now than when I purchased them. The best thing is that I can bring them with me to work and pick them up or wait for them and I get them the same day. Prior to going to this "hand sharpener", I took them to the local "grinder" and while they were sharp for 5 minutes, the edge was ruined. In between, if I need a sharpening I can check her calendar online and see what farmer's markets or stores she'll be setting up at in the next few days. Patty sharpens by hand and by eye, she doesn't just pull your knife through a machine. The edge will be really sharp when she's done, and she tests it by slicing a paper towel in the air. She owns her own business and really cares about her reputation and doing a good job. What a find! Patti's skills and knowledge are amazing.She is so friendly and great to speak with. A friend and I had more than 10 knives to sharpen, most hadn't not been sharpened in years. (And they had never seen a knife steel.) My knifes are sharper than they were when purchased. She even sharpened a pair of curved surgical scissors that must be 50+ years old. I asked her what the best brand to buy, she told me about a brand I had never heard of. They are much less expensive then my Henkels, Wustofs and fabulous! I highly recommend her. I spent a long time working on a set of very good knives in very bad shape that I had inherited. After spending many hours working out rust and repolishing the knives, I asked Patti to repair the edge and sharpen them since I don't have any experience there. Our knives were dreadfully dull, as our previous go to guy for sharpening had fallen ill and couldn't get the job done. We were on the verge of buying new knives since ours were just awful. We sought out a local solution and found Patti in her van at allandale farms today. I dropped the knives off at 3pm, my husband picked them up at 5:15. Our knives have never been this sharp! She did a great job on 2 chef knives, 1 paring knife and a serrated. So nicely done, so quickly accomplished, and Patti even waited around a bit when we got stuck in traffic. What a win. We had my Miyabi 7000D knife sharpened by Patti and while there was some issues at first we were able to work out a solution. Patti's customer service is fantastic. What happened was my knife looks like a Japanese knife but is really a Japanese German fusion line that requires a wider sharpening angle that we were unaware of. She offered to resharpen the knife at the correct angle though, so problem solved. The tape used on the flat of the blade removed the ink of the logo though, so I would suggest if your knife has a inked logo to keep it in mind. read more

I met her at Formaggio Kitchen in Cambridge one Sunday morning, and 45 minutes later, my three Wustofs and one Henckels were sharper than new! She hand-sharpens each blade, and she had her work cut out for her today--my beloved 9-inch Wustof chef knife had been well-loved with daily use for 5 years and had never been professionally sharpened. When I picked up the knives, each was in a protective sleeve. Tonight, I was slicing and dicing again in fine style! As a fun bonus, when you drop off your knives, you get to meet the dog and parrot that keep her company in her workshop-on-wheels. She keeps her website up to date so that you can plan when and where you want to meet her to do the knives.
