I highly recommend Local Root for knife sharpening. I have been using LR for years and always the results are amazing (and extremely prompt in timing, etc.). Pricing is fair and reasonable. LR's set up for appointments, drop off and pick up (and paying) likewise is incredibly user friendly and easy (trust me the easy statement is very important for me given the difficulty some places are with using their web sites, etc.). My knives have lasted years and will last longer. Again, I would highly recommend Local Root for your knife care. read more

Awesome service and easy to schedule! My knives have a new life now after being neglected for 10+years.

This review is for knife sharpening. Prices were good, cashier told me I didn't need the deluxe option for my knifes (whaaaat??), saved me $$, and got the knives sharpened like clockwork in 48 hours. Knives were "paper thin tomato slices" sharp and no chips or dings. Oh, and come for the sharpening stay for the gear. I ended up buying a *sharp* new fish filet knife and some *cool* crushed ice trays. Subtle puns, I know. Nice stuff gang! read more

I have used Local Root for knife sharpening for several years, and the quality of the work is consistently superior. This past time I took in my favorite chef's knife which had been dropped on a ceramic tile floor and had a very large burr at the tip. I was assured that if the knife was too far gone to sharpen adequately, the sharpener would let me know. The knife came back in perfect condition, much to my delight. read more

The gentleman at Local Root refused to sharpen my knives because I was unwilling to share with him my email address. I recently brought my primary chef's knife here to be sharpened and was pleased with the experience. The staff were friendly and helpful, both on the phone and in person. The owner (and knife guy) was friendly and informative. And best of all was the knife, which now performs beautifully. Makes food prep easy and enjoyable. Two-day turnaround. Reasonable price. Highly recommend. The store also carries a broad range of high-quality, food-related merchandise. Worth a trip to Belmont Center. read more

Come for the exceptional knife sharpening, stay for the selection of cooking gear and amazing customer service. I couldn't have had a better knife sharpening experience here. I have three Wusthof knives- 1 chef's knife and two santoku knives. I love cooking and use them almost constantly. I dropped in and was attended to immediately. They were done in 48 hours and very considerately sheathed for safe transport. The quality of the work was exceptional and they really could not have made the process any more simple. They also included a small card with tips on how to take good care of my knives on a daily basis, which I appreciated a lot. Very fair pricing and excellent customer service. I highly recommend this to anyone looking to take good care of their knives. Pro tip: This would be a perfect and thoughtful gift for the home cook in your life that is hard to shop for! Cooking gear is very personal, but sharp knives are an essential for anyone who cooks. I have also purchased baking sheets, cutting boards, prep bowls, and a few cooking utensils here. Great selection and they really maximize their space without making it feel crowded. The staff are very welcoming and knowledgeable. There is free parking in the back of the building. Sure, you could probably buy it for a little cheaper online, but supporting high quality local institutions like this one is a genuine pleasure. Keep up the great work, Local Root! read more

The knife sharpening was quick, reasonably priced, and professional, and the man who handled it exudes competence. I'm no expert on the ins and outs of sharpening, so I can't speak to the quality of the edge in detail, but the blades seem sharp and I'm satisfied. Most impressively, they were able to accommodate my partner's lefty-edged Japanese knife. We'll be back. read more

I used Local Root to get a chef's knife and a bread knife sharpened and they were very nice and quick (ready in 48 hours). And most importantly the knives were returned super sharp. When I first took the chef's knife to a ripe tomato I almost shed a tear with how easily I was able to turn the tomato into a pile of razor thin slices. Much better than every other knife sharpening service I have used near the city. read more

I gave him a brand new but dull meat cleaver and put a fine edge on it .

I had been using a knife sharpening service much closer to home for years but the quality had declined so much that I could see the mistakes easily. I tried Local Root in Belmont mostly because I had a sentimental knife that was my dad' S that had rust on it and needed obvious care which I wasn't willing to risk. I spoke directly with the person responsible for sharpening my knifes and he clarified exactly what I wanted for this sentimental piece which I intended to pass on to my son. I picked up the knives 2 days later and the difference in quality is amazing. I'm extremely pleased with the job that was done! read more

Local Root is a lovely upscale kitchen store with all of the high-end pots, pans, and gadgets you'd expect to find in such a store. What sets them apart from most other such stores, however, is their excellent and economical on-site knife sharpening service. For the very reasonable price of $10, Local Root will sharpen your knife for next-day pickup or UPS delivery in the Boston area. Every knife they sharpen comes with a nice plastic blade guard that would probably set you back $5 if you were to buy it separately. (And buy one you should lest your knives be dulled again by bashing around in your drawers, unless, that is, you have a knife block or something similar.) I brought in a Henckels "Four Star" chef's knife that I had bought back in 2003 when I was still young and foolish about kitchen equipment. The department store salesman who was helping me back then sold me on a pull-through ceramic sharpener that he suggested I use whenever the knife was getting dull. Of course, I should have been honing the knife on a steel when it was no longer razor sharp instead of grinding a new cutting edge, but I didn't know that at the time. To make a long story short, the pull-through sharpener eventually created a 1/2" long, 1/16" deep indentation near the heel of the knife that was both unsightly and deprived the knife of much of its useful cutting area. When I took my knife into Local Root, I expected that they would simply sharpen those parts of my knife blade that were in good condition, and leave the divot near the heel as it was. Instead, their master sharpener basically made me an entirely new knife by flattening out the divot and grinding me an entirely new cutting edge. The knife now performs better than it did when it was new. It slices through sheets of taut paper with ease and cutting tricky things like tomatoes and onions is now a breeze. I am impressed by the speed of their service, the fine quality of their work, and their obvious attention to detail. For $10, this service is a steal. read more

Brought our Japanese Wa-Gyuto knife in for wet stone sharpening. Service was helpful, polite, and excellent all around. Knife came out great. Thanks! read more

In general I usually sharpen my own knives. Since I graduated from the C.I.A. But the other day I made a mistake, when I hit a live wire when thankfully I wasn't cutting! Because Global knives are 100% forged I would have been shocked! So I was surprised when my knife had a spark mark on it! And I said I definitely cannot fix this myself! So I found Local Root. When I picked up the knife I was like nice! This Japanese knife is got a finer edge than a well crafted German knife. The first thing I noticed was that he carefully made the front edge even brighter than new! And it was extremely sharp! If they had a even better price on a bunch of my knives, I would not hesitate to bring them over! read more

Superb service. Friendly, helpful and a quick turn-around. Knives were beautifully sharpened to a sharp, even edge. A nick in one of them was polished over and the knife looks like new. Completely satisfied. read more

I took my knives to Local Root for sharpening. They did an excellent job! My knives hadn't been sharpened in over two years beyond just using the steel. My knives came back sharp as new and they were even able to repair one knife that had a very bad chip. I will definitely be coming back! Plus they have tons of great kitchen items in the store! read more

Their knife sharpening service is fantastic. My favorite chef's knife had grown quite dull over 2 years, and the little knife sharpener gizmo I have at home was not doing anything for it. Taking it to Local Root was a great experience. They have plentiful free parking in the back, their shop is delightful to wander, and their staff are so pleasant. The process was simple and the prices were quite reasonable. My knife is like new now, and I'm so pleased. read more

What a bummer...... I was really excited about this business opening up. I love to support local businesses for many reasons. One reason being that the customer service is usually friendlier in a smaller place and the experience tends to be more personal. Before Christmas my husband bought me new cookie sheets to get the season started with sweets. They were professional grade non stick. After the first use, they stained badly and the nonstick surface began to peel. I washed them properly and never used anything metal in them to cause the peeling. So I decided to return them. When I got to the counter there was a man, (perhaps the owner?) on his computer and greeted me gruffly without ever looking at me. I explained my reasons for wanting to return the cookie sheets, all the while he never looked at me. Strange, eh? Then he explained that because the product was not defective that he could not take it back. Still the guy never looked at me. So I said, "Really? With the non stick peeling after the first use? It's not defective?". He told me that maybe I didn't wash it properly, maybe I used too much butter.......then decided to let me return it reluctantly- but before that asked me if I wanted to look at their pans with no non stick surface. I declined. I'll never set foot I there again. It's never nice to have someone be rude to you for no good reason. Best of luck to you mister. Try being a little nicer if you want your business to do well. The economy is not so good that you can depend on just selling pretty things. Plus, it's just better to be nice. read more

Why go to Big Bill Sonoma's when you have Local Root right here? I have bought a bunch of kitchen equipment here and all of it has been excellent quality, often the same brands you would find at William Sonoma, prices just as good or better. I never imagined I would be happy to pay what I did for a garlic press, but it works so much better than the cheap ones, is easy to clean, and will last the rest of my life. read more

Brought in some knives to be sharpened. Excellent customer service, will definitely be coming back.

I had knives sharpened. They were done perfectly and on time but pricey.

I've bought a couple of item here and the two staff members that I've interacted with have both been friendly and helpful. In particular, though not completely successful, one woman put a great deal of effort into boxing up the only remaining food processor of the model I wanted for me. The only thing keeping this from being a 5 star review is that the selection is a bit limited, possibly due to the somewhat cozy dimensions of the place. read more

I had a very dull knife sharpened here and it came out great! Its unbelievably sharp now!

They were quick, prompt, and professional sharpening a wide variety of knives and gave me a referral for a knife maker in the area who could sharpen serrated knives. I honestly think my knives are sharper than when I bought them! Reasonably priced for the service and I would highly recommend them. read more
