We had a terrible metal-on-metal scraping noise, from the passenger rear wheel, suddenly begin after a stoplight while passing through Eureka, and it definitely didn't sound good. We pulled over and called our RV insurance, but while waiting for a callback, I started calling around town to see if anyone could help us sooner. It was already 3pm, and unfortunately every place I called told me to come back the next morning. Since we were just traveling through in our camper van, waiting wasn't really an option. We just wanted to safely continue on to our campsite. When I called Old Town Auto Service, they didn't hesitate at all, just told us to stop by and they'd take a look right away. We drove over, and they got our Promaster Solis Pocket up on the lift immediately! They quickly found the issue: a small rock had gotten wedged between the rotor and the heat shield. Simple fix, but a huge relief. We were in and out with the problem completely resolved before our RV insurance even called back to say they were still trying to find a technician for us. 5 stars all the way! The staff was friendly, the shop was clean, and they treated us with respect, even for such a small issue. It's a big deal to find a place willing to work on our van without hesitation. I had had my oil changed at another shop in town, and afterwards, I had a check engine light and an oil pressure light come on. I brought it in here for a second opinion to figure out what was wrong. The person I was working with was Brian. Brian ran the code, and it said that the oil pressure sensor was stuck in the open position. As he got into the diagnosis, apparently when the other shop did the oil change, a prong from the oil filter had broken off, and was blocking the oil pressure sensor. I went back over to the other shop, and spoke to the manager. The manager called over to Brian to find out exactly what had happened, and Brian went over it in detail. Based on what had happened, the manager at the other shop agreed to cover the cost of repairs to get my car back on the road. My car got fixed with no out-of-pocket cost to myself, and even though it was only three days before Christmas, when I brought my car in, Brian had my car ready the following morning. Two days before Christmas. I highly recommend this shop. They will take very good care of you. Thank you to Brian for getting my car done, and for having my back in this situation. I own a 2017 Chevy Bolt EV. This car slowly became undrivable because it would start to shake and vibrate like a can of bolts. I literally thought all four tires were coming off the car. I took the car to FOUR other repair shops, and NONE of them could figure out what was wrong, but they sure were able to charge me at least $150 per effort. THEN I TRIED OLD TOWN AUTO!!! Their tech drove it and figured it out immediately (sticky calipers, resulting in damage to the rotors). I've now driven the newly repaired car for over 500 miles without a single problem. THANK YOU, OLD TOWN AUTO!!!! They're the only repair shop that figured it out and fixed it. They're my go-to for now on for all my cars. read more

If you're a AAA member or considering this shop, I strongly urge you to read this entire review. It's lengthy and detailed, but the seriousness of what occurred makes it worth your time. Reading this could save you thousands of dollars, along with unnecessary stress, expenses, and avoidable damage. On Friday, November 14, 2025, my truck was parked outside my residence and would not start. I contacted AAA for towing assistance. The AAA-approved towing company transported the vehicle to Old Town Auto Service in Eureka, California, which is also a AAA-approved repair facility. I was present during both the loading and unloading of the vehicle. At that time, no damage was visible, and the tow-truck operator appeared competent and to be following proper procedures. On Monday, November 17, 2025, Old Town Auto Service notified me that the vehicle was ready for pickup and reported that the non-start condition had been caused by a failed fuel pump, which they stated had been repaired. Upon entering the vehicle, I immediately observed that the interior fuse-box panel cover on the driver's side was missing. I reported this to the mechanic, and two employees located and reinstalled the missing panel. When I attempted to drive the vehicle out of the parking lot, I immediately detected an abnormal steering condition accompanied by an unusual noise. I returned to the service office to report the issue, and an employee accompanied me outside to inspect the vehicle. This steering issue did not exist prior to leaving the truck in Old Town Auto's possession. The mechanic opened the hood to inspect the engine bay. At that time, I observed that the fuse-box cover in the engine compartment had been improperly installed and was misaligned sitting sideways rather than properly seated and secured. I also observed a smashed spray-can cap lodged near the hood-latch area, which had left a clearly visible circular mark on the vehicle. Multiple service managers and mechanics were present as I raised these concerns. The mechanic suggested the noise might be related to the power-steering pump. However, the reservoir was full and there were no visible signs of leakage. I then inspected underneath the vehicle and discovered that the CV-axle boot had been torn open. The grease was clean and free of dirt or debris, indicating that the damage was extremely recent. Another mechanic independently stated that the damage appeared "very fresh." During this time, an employee from the front office made a joking remark about replacing the axle; given the circumstances, I did not find this appropriate. When I asked how the vehicle could have been declared road-ready, no meaningful explanation was provided. I was told only that "these things happen," and the damage was attributed to the towing company without any supporting basis. However, I could not even drive out of their parking lot without immediately noticing a major steering problem. If a test drive had actually been performed, the mechanic would have noticed this immediately. Furthermore, the CV-axle damage is significant and very obvious. Both the tow-truck driver and I would have seen that damage during loading, and we would have reported it upon arrival. Additionally, several mechanics had moved the vehicle, pushing it into the lot, repositioning it onto the lift, and allegedly test-driving it. Any of them would have noticed such visible damage. I was told that the shop would keep the vehicle to further inspect the damage and contact me the following day. However, Old Town Auto did not contact me. On the morning of November 19, 2025, I called the shop for an update. I was informed that the CV axle was broken and required replacement, and that the water pump was also leaking. Neither issue existed when the vehicle was delivered to Old Town Auto. The sole reason the vehicle was originally brought in was to address a fuel-system failure. I was further informed that although they had previously stated the vehicle was road-ready, they could provide me with a quote if I wished them to repair the newly reported damage. These circumstances are completely inconsistent with the condition of my truck when it was placed in Old Town Auto Service's custody. After raising these issues, the manager contacted me, offering $200 on the condition that I not pursue any claims or post anything negative about the shop, while simultaneously refusing to address the damage to my truck and insisting it be towed off their lot. This attempt to silence legitimate concerns only underscores the lack of accountability, professionalism, and honesty I experienced throughout this process. Based on the available evidence and my firsthand observations, I have every reason to believe the damage occurred while the vehicle was under Old Town Auto Service's care, custody, and control. I do not recommend this shop to anyone, especially AAA customers who expect reputable, trustworthy service. read more

Let me start by saying the staff is awesome. Took my vehicle here for a diagnostic. They were very responsive and had great communication both through phone calls and text messages. I ended up having to leave the vehicle there longer than anticipated due to unforeseen family medical issues and they were very understanding about that. Now here's where the 2 stars comes into play. I was quoted a ridiculous amount of money to fix the issue. Every other shop I've called says they have no idea how they came to that price and every one was thousands less than what I was quoted at Old Town. They also went beyond what would be expected by replacing the battery in my key fob. I noticed it needed to be replaced when I picked up the car. They drove to 3 places to find a battery! I took my 2005 Avalon in for an oil change and inspection. For several years the car had been loaned to family members and had not been serviced since returned to me . Old Town did a complete inspection, and I already knew brakes/rotors were poor. With all the odds and ends it was several thousand dollars, but I now have an old, low mileage car that will safely last many more years. And spread over the last ten years where it received minimum attention (oil changes, of course), the cost not too bad...I keep telling myself. Expensive, but cheap doesn't stop my car. There were bolts that had not been loosen in 18 years, leaks, and that sort of fun stuff. And fixing things right instead of just okay takes a little longer. Absolute ripoff and borderline criminal. Blindsided me with a $400 diagnosis (despite me telling them the codes I had found), then quoted me $1500 to fix it. A mechanic friend told me to get it out of that shop asap. I did and realized they were going to charge 750 for parts that cost 150 (I bought them). I have been taking my car into Old Town Auto for about 4 years now. Last time I was there in May they found a problem that another shop couldn't find in a day and repaired it. Today I took it in because I knew my starter was going out. Through the inspection Mike called me to let me know every time something came up, he gave me a price right away and on the phone waited patiently when I didn't have an answer right away. The repair shop is always AAA certified shop 10% off on the labor fee. The one thing I was disappointed about was the rental car they gave me because a part wouldn't be in until Monday. The car had a cracked windshield, was on E and rear view mirror fell off after adjusting it. They offered me two cars to choose from and I went with the bigger one because I had walked down with my clients with disabilities who I work with in their home. I would still recommend them to others and to thank Mike for making sure I knew everything that was going on with my car. read more

I brought my car in because of a code reading a misfire in the 2nd cylinder and when I dropped it off I asked if they could check the spark plugs and coil first so I wouldn't have to pay for the engine diagnostic test. I was still charged for the engine diagnostic test and the problem was the spark plugs and coil. It made me feel like I was being taken advantage of because i paid over $600 to replace my spark plugs. read more

While visiting from San Jose - staying at my sister's in Eureka, my car key would not turn in the ignition. I called several auto repair shops and the responses included "we are booked for several weeks", "try calling a locksmith", "we don't work on that kind of repairs", etc. I called Old Town Auto Service because they are an AAA certified shop. Darryl said that I could have my car towed to their shop right away and they would diagnose the problem by the next day - which they did. Once the issue was diagnosed, Darryl advised me that the part would need to be come direct from the manufacturer (VW) for the replacement part as it had to be ordered using my car's key code and that it could take as long as 6 weeks! The part came in less than 3 weeks - but unfortunately it was defective. Darryl contacted me to explain my options for proceeding with the repairs. We decided to return the defective part as it was under warranty and reorder. The 2nd part took a little longer to arrive, but Darryl responded immediately when I emailed for a status update. I finally have my car back - YAY! and it is working fine. The five stars are for the following reasons: - They took in my car immediately, no waiting. - Darryl kept me up to date on the repair status and responded promptly to my queries. - When I left my car at the shop, I wanted to bring home two car seats. I tried for about 20 minutes, but was unable to get them unbuckled. I went back in the office and asked Bella (at the front desk) for help. She came out and struggled with them for another 20 minutes without much luck. One of the mechanics (Jeremy?) saw our struggles and came to help. It still took another 30 minutes or so, and a screw driver, to finally release the car seat. I feel this kind of service is above and beyond what is expected! read more

Worst experience I've ever had at a mechanic. It doesn't cost 500+ to replace a spark plug. They saw that I was dressed nice and tried to over charge hands down. Don't go to them!!. And the guy at the service counter even said that I was right as I was leaving after I expressed that I called another mechanic. I ended up paying more than the initial quote on the phone for the exact same job that I inquired but I wasn't super overcharged like many other auto shops scam with their customers. You would think that after paying 100 dollars for a diagnostic they would find what is causing a specific problem in your vehicle. Not in my case. Gave them a visit, they gave me a quote and said that after replacing this part and paying nearly 2k it would fix the problem. Paid for the parts and labor and after taking it back home and giving it a week, I still have the same problem. They said there is another part they think might be the root cause and that it will cost another 1.5k. If you have a problem with your vehicle I recommend that you take it to that specific dealership of the make of your vehicle or you will end up like what I did, paying for their process of elimination because they don't know how to properly diagnose a problem. I am a disabled veteran and I am also going to school so 2k is a lot of money but for them to shrug and say I don't know what to tell you really shows you what kind of business they are. They will probably follow up with me writing this review trying to "CUSHION" their fall BUT BE WARNED, I WILL NEVER BRING MY VEHICLE HERE AGAIN NOR WILL I RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE. BEWARE!!!..... DISHONEST LIARS!!!!! ....WOW....what a nightmare my experience has been with this shop!!! I took my car in for a simple issue,a power steering issue that needed my alternator to be replaced. I paid $179.00 to have my alternator checked only to be told it was in perfect working condition. I was shocked to hear this as I tested it myself and it showed 11 volts before I took it in. Brian and the mechanic assured me it was working fine and that they had to go through my electrical system to fix the problem. I was shocked but trusted them. My father was in ICU and old town kept my car for a full week, so I was forced to rent a car to get to my father. After old town automotive completely tore my electrical system apart, to call and tell me that they we're wrong...it was the alternator after all!!!!! When I finally got the call my car was ready to be picked up....they tried to charge me $1017.00 for the misdiagnosis they're mechanic made and for the time wasted on my car (3days). Lacy ...the woman in the office was very unprofessional and the last person I would have dealing with the customers. She literally tried to steal my money by falsely charging me for the mistake they made!!! I ended up paying $599.40.....after refusing to pay for their mistakes. They also refused to reimburse me $758.00 for the rental car I had to get due to them keeping my car for 1 week, when it only took them 1 day to fix after trying to charge me 1017.00 dollars and straight up lying to my face. ALSO.......when I picked up my car, my radio was on full blast and both seats were not in they're correct positions. Also my milage shows that they drove my car 60 plus miles !!!!!!!!!!!!Now I have to waste my time and more money with taking them to small claims court and dealing with the BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU. I have NEVER been cheated like this before!!!! Do not take your business to Old town automotive.....you will regret it!!!!
