Meh. I feel like this place has the potential to be good, but it just misses the bar. They had live music on the night we were there & while the music wasn't bad, the performer needed to read the room & see that there were families with little children before he dropped a GD when having technical difficulties. That is no fault of the restaurant of course. I dunno though, the energy was just off is the only way I can explain it. From the time we walked in to the time we left. First time visiting Old Salt Tavern. First the good, ambiance is nice, I like the quote by Toby Keith on the wall. We sat in the high top tables near the bar and it felt a little tight wrt space between tables. Service was okay, started out promising but after food was served our waitress sort of disappeared on us. I had to flag down the manger to get our bill. So the food... they have a happy hour but it's only drinks, no deals on apps. We did get the fried pickles and banana peppers and they were tasty, but pickles were too salty IMO. Was the app worth $12? Absolutely not. My daughter said the sweet potato fries were good but would have been great had they come out hot! She was not a fan of the Mac n cheese, said pasta was overcooked and the cheese was not thick, didn't stick to the pasta like it should. Also it had tomatoes in it, which I thought was odd. My husband had the smokehouse burger (two 4oz patties) and he said it was tasty, he'd get it again but said the "fries" were odd. Because of how they are sliced they got cold really fast (more surface area). I had the Umm burger and while the flavor was good, it comes wrapped in tin foil which kills the bun, it disintegrated in my hand before I could really taste it. I'm on the fence on this restaurant. They had a couple of other items on the menu that I wouldn't mind trying next time we are in town. I just know what to avoid next time..... Will I recommend it to friends? Unlikely. Oh and beware... a customer at a nearby table ordered fried shrimp and the restaurant does NOT HAVE cocktail sauce to serve with it. I'm sorry, what? This is a restaurant at the beach and you don't have cocktail sauce to go with the shrimp on your menu???!!! read more

Very clean, no wait and the staff was very friendly. Got the shrimp po boy and nachos, so much food! Tasted great! Got an old fashion which was great. Our waitress was Charlie, sweet young lady! My parents and I popped in here for dinner our first night at the gulf about two weeks ago. After our large lunch on the trip down, we wanted something easy and that had good appetizers we could share instead of a huge entrees and this fit the bill perfectly. I get the impression this is a newer restaurant. It's in a large strip mall and there was adequate parking. They were doing a pretty good business on a Thursday night around 7 PM. The inside has nice TVs and a sort of more upscale sports bar feel. There's a good bit of seating and it's very open. The women's restroom was spotless when I visited it. Our waitress was Lucy and she did a fantastic job! We felt right at home and she answered all our questions and made good recommendations. During our time there, another waiter inadvertently spilled about four large drinks right in front of the door to the kitchen. It was nice to see the entire team come together to help him and they got it cleaned up quickly and without complaint. Great teamwork! We ordered 2 pretzels with queso and Creole honey mustard, my dad got the 5 wings with garlic Parmesan and ranch iirc, and we also got the smaller order of "nachos deluxe." Our food came out in a timely manner and was hot and fresh. My favorite thing was probably the pretzels and queso. The pretzels had a heavy dusting of Parmesan and salt and were super soft. The queso was a great accompaniment. I wasn't super crazy about the honey mustard but nbd, the queso was all I needed. My dad really enjoyed his wings and was appreciative of Lucy's garlic parm recommendation. In addition to the pretzels, my mom and I split the nachos. The homemade chili on top was tasty and a pleasant surprise; I was expecting more of a taco meat vibe but the chili was slightly sweet and very umami and VERY filling. These were definitely solid nachos. I personally would have preferred pickled jalapeños to fresh, but my mom was relieved as the fresh ones don't tend to come quite as "juicy" and it was easier for her to avoid the spiciness (as she's a heat weenie, lol). Overall, a very solid spot for higher quality bar food with lots of American classics and a few nods to the coast and NOLA. There's likely something for everyone here, and it's extra nice that it's served by friendly and professional waitstaff. read more

Got the Reuben with a side of pasta salad. The Reuben was great, the pasta salad was not my favorite. Overcooked pasta covered in a weird salad dressing. Also got the garlic Parmesan Brussels sprouts and they were absolutely amazing! Best Brussels I've ever had. They're shaved and cooked on the grill with plenty of bacon. This is a new spot in a location that has been quite a few different restaurants over the years. Old Salt Tavern looks nifty from the outside and it seems that it has a sports bar vibe when you walk into the space. It was Memorial Day and there seemed to be quite a few folks waiting to be seated although there was lots of available seating in the restaurant. I chose to sit at the bar for my first visit and I was able to quickly put my order in but the bartender informed me that the kitchen was running behind so it would probably take awhile. I ordered the grouper and it came with a caesar salad which also had what they described as a "croissant" well I've eaten a LOT of croissants and this was absolutely not a croissant and it was just a plain roll in the shape of a croissant! A proper croissant has many layers inside of it which were totally missing in this roll. They either need to serve actual croissants are just say they serve rolls as their is a big difference between those two types of bread. My fish entree was fine while I wasn't so happy with the side it came with. For the price I know a lot of other spots with far better food than this spot. Overall they have a nice space here and I might try this place again in a year or so to see how it is doing. read more

"One of the best burgers I've ever had." The words from my Husband and 11 year old. He got the Tavern Burger and I opted for the Patty Melt. Both were very juicy and flavorful burgers. The "fries" were fantastic and seasoned great. We also enjoy the small nacho appetizer which didn't disappoint either. Loaded with toppings and THE FRESH HOUSE MADE CHIPS?!?!! AMAZING! Great place to escape the heat and enjoy a beverage or great meal. Plenty of screens for sports, and live music Friday and Saturday nights. Our service was on point. The waitress was very attentive, drinks were full and food was received in a timely manner. Drinks ordered were a Jalapeño Margarita on the rocks and a Whiskey (type?) with Strawberry Puree. Nice beach vibe concoctions. The Calamari with lemon aioli and mango chili mojo was hot, fresh, crispy and tender. Delicious! The Club sandwich with house-made Tavern Fries, loaded with cajun turkey, shaved ham and smoked bacon on toasted sourdough, really hit the spot. This thing was HUGE! So good! The Fiesta Salad was a beast, and also very, very good! As if more was needed to complete this dish, it was served with a piping hot Croissant with Honey Glaze. OMG! ~Too bad those aren't separate menu items!~ Both plates could easily be shared. We'll definitely be back!!! read more

Cool sports bar with NFL ticket in a strip mall next to Wall Mart. Had the wings (pay the xtra buck to get em charred!) and they were excellent. Our server recommended to have with blue cheese which she raved about. Spot on, blue cheese dressing was fabulous! I'm into craft beer and they had some decent IPA's. Went twice in two days to watch football. If I come back here and want to watch a game, definitely coming here. read more

Going for lunch, it wasn't very busy. Menu has something for everyone. Highly recommend the fried pickles and peppers for an appetizer. The ummm burger is also pretty fantastic. Service was good and quick. The balance of the music playing and conversation was good until the bar filled up then it got pretty noisy pretty fast. Had pretzels and a few drinks the second day, our anniversary, and it was another great night! Jill at the bar made ours, and everyone else's that was sitting there, experience a very fun and memorable night on both visits! We had a great experience at Old Salt Tabernacle! Our server was being trained so between her and her trainer, we were well taken care of. Never had any major lapses where we couldn't find either of them. We ordered the chicken nachos for an appetizer and they were amazing! Real pieces of chicken all over and cheese covering almost all chips so every bite was delicious. We primarily ordered burgers for dinner and they were so good! I'd say they were better than some of the so called gourmet burger places. The atmosphere was casual and fun. I'd definitely go back next time I'm in Orange Beach. Among our favorites on the menu are the Jolene Jolene blackened, sweet potato waffle fries, chili, and wings (teriyaki and charred). Old Salt Tavern has charm to spare, and the staff's warmth is genuinely disarming. But a month into what appears to be a rebranding or change in ownership, the seams are still showing -- and noticeably so. Our server was friendly but clearly still finding his footing, unfamiliar enough with the menu that ordering felt like a collaborative guessing game. The food took an exceptionally long time to arrive, and we weren't alone -- we overheard apologies being extended to neighboring tables as well. When it happens across the dining room, it's a kitchen issue, not an off night. The low point came when we were ready to leave. Our server had vanished, and as the only one able to process our check (I asked), we were stuck waiting with no clear end in sight. A small thing in isolation, but after a slow meal it felt like one more crack in an operation still finding its footing. Three stars, and honestly meant with some generosity. New management and a fresh start are hard, and the friendliness of the staff suggests there's something worth building here. Old Salt Tavern may well be worth a return visit in six months -- but right now, it needs time to find its rhythm. read more
