Finally tried this place last night for dine in. My husband and I both ordered chicken fried steaks and they were absolutely delicious! For sides we had fries, mashed potatoes and okra. All of it was delicious and perfectly seasoned. My son had chicken tenders and okra. He loved his meal as well. The rolls are so delicious too! Our sweet tea was amazing! Came here on the recommendation of the day tripper. The chicken fried steak was large however it was rather tasteless. I've eaten a lot of chicken fried steaks in my day. Met some friends for dinner here after being told I had to try this Temple staple. First of all- Old Jody's is not to be confused with New Jody's which is owned by the same family and sits across the street. The atmosphere is casual and they were quite busy on a Tuesday evening at supper time. I ordered the CFS with mashed potatoes and onion rings- tho I was very tempted to try the frog legs. The CFS was juicy and tender and seasoned well. The breading to meat ratio was good- y'all know what I mean when that ration is skewed toward breading. I got gravy on the side so my leftovers wouldn't get soggy. All in all it was a good meal, good environment and I will definitely go back. Keep in mind it's cash only! read more

The food, however, is nothing at all to brag about. The food is absolutely bland. We both ordered the chicken fried steak...terrible. Not crispy, no flavor. Very disappointing . Saw this place being recommended by Chet Garner. Got burned by him once up in Hico, but decided to give it a chance while passing thru on the way to Dallas. A really nice and cool looking building. Very nice and polite wait staff. Pretty busy at lunch. Sorta like controlled chaos. Got our order in, and after a loooong wait our burgers and an onion ring order arrived. The onion rings were a sad. Hardly breaded and basically a limp mess. Nothing like what I saw on other folks plates. We didn't say anything as we had already waited a good while for our food and just wanted to eat and get going. However. They should never been served like this to begin with. The cook dished them up looking crappy, and the waitress served them looking crappy. The burgers were a basic ok. Appeared to be pre-formed dense beef patties. Not a good chew. I was hoping that after the long wait we would be served a nice grilled burger. Oh well. It's a nice place and the locals love it. I suppose that's what counts. Well, I've been here before and swore I'd never return. But, I'm all about 2nd chances and this time it paid off. I started eating liver & onions awhile back and it's made a huge difference in my life. I took a shot and ordered it with mashed tators, brown gravy & green beans. I got a sweet tea to drink and they brought rolls as well. The liver was tender, tasty and cooked just right. Mashed tators were just like I like em and good red eye gravy. The tea was just the right sweetness, so you could enjoy the taste of TEA and not think you're drinking syrup. The waitress was fast and friendly and I hated that I couldn't leave a tip. I only had cash enough to pay for my meal and they only accept cash or checks. I'll come back again and bring more money. Overall, they've made a big improvement from the last visit 5 years ago. I just discovered Old Jody's today when I had business in Temple. First thing I noticed was Cash and checks only! No credit or debit cards, but they do have an ATM on site. The servers were super friendly and helpful. It has a hometown cafe vibe. Another reviewer compared it to "Cheers" for food, I would agree with that assessment. The food was absolutely delicious! The staff wasn't the friendliest, I actually stood there for 5 minutes and finally asked if I just seat myself. The place was dirty and if it weren't for the fact that people outside raved about it we probably would have left. My fried tomatoes were amazing as were the fries. But honestly the rest of what we ordered was sub par. My burger was nothing special. Dry and just ok. My friend ordered steak which they make with zero seasoning, not even salt or pepper. And I was pretty disgusting when I saw the waitress actually handle the dinner rolls with her bare hand- no glove- and with Covid running ramped! Negatives: food was below-average at best. We had four meals and none of us finished our plates. Greazy, over coated for batter, hot on the outside and cold on the inside. For desert I ordered the deepfried oreos - thinking that couldn't be messed up. Lol, it was. I ate half of one and left the rest. Ten pounds of batter, cookie was all smushed up inside. Gross. This place rocks! It's been around for a while, it's popular with the locals, everyone has been to Jody's - a hometown favorite. It's got great burgers, all types of fries, lots of sides, everything deep fried you could imagine, and let's not forget Sassy Samantha's top notch customer service. It was busy, the parking lot was packed. When I walked in the ambiance sort of reminded me of the movie "Roadhouse" with the neon lights, small town feel, and a jukebox (you never see one of those anymore) that actually works! Big Bad Tom (Mr. RFID) was poppin' quarters in like there was no tomorrow. "This is way better than mp3's!!" he shouted out to the crowd - who caught on very quickly that he wasn't from this part of town.... The menu has a mix of diner and comfort food at very reasonable prices, took me back to the 90's. I got the cheeseburger ($2.95) w/ grilled onions - it was really good. The onion rings were tasty, had a light and flaky batter and they were large. And fried tomatoes? No way, but my friend Ash got them so I had to try 'em and they were really good! Thick cut potato fries (called Jo-Jos) were seasoned and they fill you up. They have a fried twinkie ($1.95) which was okay, I think I'll pass on it the next time - - but the fried ice cream looked really good. My peppy friend Sandy loved it - - we could tell because she didn't want to share. But the highlight of Jody's was that sassy-hometown-diner-feel-energetic-southern-hospitality-don't-mess-with-Texas-customer service provided by Sassy Samantha. She took care of all 20 of us, and did an awesome job making sure everyone got what they ordered. There were a few minor mishaps as some of us were high maintenance and changed our orders, but she was quick to fix. She kept up on our water and tea refills and was all down to business - I commend her on a great job well done. So if you have some time, and you're looking for diner food, something deep fried, or some really sassy service, stop in at Jody's - and just try giving Sassy Samantha a hard time.
