Well folks, I'm not food snob. I can eat army rations for days, but let me tell you. My wife and I wanted to try this place as we love to support local businesses and family run operations. We hit just before the lunch rush. Self seating. Our waitress took our drink order and after that came we waited a short spell. She was friendly and answered our questions about the menu. I wasn't very hungry and settled on a chilled cheese dog. My wife, a true southerners, ordered the lunch chicken fried steak. I just don't know if it's the world, our timing or us. But lately we hit places with wonderful reviews and they disappoint in either service or quality. Be warned. You never know if you are getting canned hormel chille or home made. I really hope this was hormel. The hotdogs had the texture of being neither boiled or grilled. So I'm guessing it was microwaved a bit too long as it was tough and chewy. The chicken fried steak edges came out too crispy and inedible although the meaty portion was ok. I notice a lot of the chicken fried stuff came out of the kitchen a bit crispy on the ends. I had to flag someone down for a refill on my tea. They did have great unsweetened tea. Remember. This place is cash or check. Only. I might want to go back on another day and try something else. Exactly what you'd think when you want good ole American comfort food. Here for appointments and wanted something before we made our drive back to Brenham. Walked in, was greeted and invited to find a table. Friendly people and just a feeling of welcome to your hometown diner, where the food and all the people here accepts anyone wanting to visit. My hubby who doesn't typically eat onions rings ordered them with his grilled chicken sandwich and can't stop raving about them. The salad could have used a little more green leafs, but the ranch was great. The tea was another great choice. Loved the Chicken fried steak, minus it being put on top of the gravy. Was in town for a basketball game and stopped here. Staff is very nice, simple setup inside with rows of tables, and only takes cash. We had fried catfish with onion rings, a cheeseburger, and a chicken fried steak platter. The food was good for what it was, plenty of southern options, and most of it fried. I know this is a Temple institution, but just sharing my experience. Came in on a Friday night, so expected it to be busy. Service, while a bit slow, was friendly. The atmosphere felt a bit chaotic especially from our seat that was near the bathroom and kitchen. Against our better judgment, we ordered the raw oysters (my husband had been craving them) and they were served on ice instead of the shell leading us to believe they were not fresh. We got one little sliver of lemon and something that resembled cocktail sauce? We recognized that maybe this was just not the best choice at a non-seafood restaurant. Onto the entrees: hamburger steak with mashed potatoes and okra and double cheeseburger with onion rings. Everything was cooked well and nicely presented, but so BLAND. Like no salt whatsoever in any of the food. Also, I know times are hard, but instant mashed potatoes were surprising to see. So while nothing was necessarily "bad" and I wouldn't say to not go here, just expected more flavorful southern food. If you don't mind the lack of salt or seasoning, then the food was fine. However, I definitely wouldn't recommend the oysters. Not sure if I would go back for dinner, but I would probably do a to go burger. read more

Excellent place to get good down-home food. I had chicken livers and alligator poppers. Yum! The service was very friendly and quick. Not much ambience but everyone there were very pleasant. I highly recommend Old Jody's. I will be going back as soon as my cholesterol settles down! read more

We really enjoyed eating here. I had not been since I lived in Temple and was a teenager. The ambiance is pretty much the same as I remember except it seemed brighter and cleaner than my memories. Service was traditional diner with plenty of "honeys and sweeties". Love that! Food was good. I had the beef stew. Loaded with goodies but a bit over-seasoned. Mom had the liver and onions and it was delicious. I'm glad to see this place still going strong after so many years. We'll be back! read more

Not to fond of this place, Very cute place a lot of character to it . Lacked a lot of flavor in the food. Waiter was attentive and great attitude helpful with opinions on what to eat. she recommended the chicken fried steak . Although I did not get that. Wish I would've maybe It would've been better than the meat loaf I ordered. Burger was decent. Sweet tea was great. I've loved Jody's since I was a little kid. My parents would often take us, and the Jody cheeseburger has been my favorite for the rest of my life - I'm just a few months shy of 67 yo now. The place is just comfortable and easygoing, though it can get a little loud at times. Highly recommended if you're looking for old-fashioned drive-in food. (Yes, it was a drive-in with car hops and everything when I was little.) read more

First time here and it didn't disappoint. Beers were nice and cold & served in a frosty Big O. Appetizers of fried pickles, jalapeños and onion rings were hot and tasty. Went with the classic chicken fried steak and it didn't disappoint along with all the sides. Service was amazing as we had a big group and we were all taken care of. Old time diner food, fixed the way I remember from years past. Great burgers, generous portions, and fast, friendly service. Cash only, but they do have an ATM on site. Look for specials displayed on the front door when you come in (chicken and dumplings). Plenty of parking around and next to the restaurant. Old Jody's is the true definition of good 'ol Texas cooking. When you walk in you are welcomed to pictures on the wall of Texas country music king George Strait, rustic but small town modern feel. Open kitchen to see "cookie" making your food and servers running back and forth holding something everytime they come in and out of the kitchen area. 9 times out of 10 it's a busy spot. I get the double cheeseburger which is made homestyle which is not over seasoned and not flavorless neither. Onion rings are homemade and extremely delicious but the chili cheese fries are also top tier. Chicken fried steak is definitely Texas sized but on the thin side, I'll be honest with you and tell you it is pretty unseasoned and the gravy carries it a long way. Mashed potatoes have a powder taste but luckily I'm not too good for instant mash lol. For your beverage get the "Arnold Palmer" with sweet tea because they have this down pat. If you ever find yourself in Temple and driving by this place definitely stop by and taste some true Texan eats. read more

Went here for lunch with my grandsons and daughter-in-law. It was a pretty busy place so I imagine it is popular with the locals. The hamburger I had was good. The ice cream, well... Didn't really seem like ice cream. I'm not quite sure what it was made of. I think it was more of an iced non- dairy dessert. I didn't care for the family style seating. It just felt cold. Old Jody's has apparently been around for decades, but they've kept the building in good shape. The restaurant was clean and presentable. The server said they're know for their Chicken Fried Steak, so I went with the smaller cut, which came with a side of fries. I was also craving something spicy, so I ordered fried jalapeños. Everything was delicious, except the fries. They looked perfectly prepared, but they had absolutely no flavor at all. read more

on June 2nd, 2025, we stopped by Old Jodi's for a bite to eat with my Family. I was greeted by one lady. Who asked How many and got us a table. Once we sat down, we waited for a server to come by And no one did at first. Then the same lady who sat us down brought us menus and even told a server we were there but the server proceeded to go to another table. this other table were Customers that had come in ten minutes after us. Several customers had come in after us... I noticed and was very upset about the situation and spoke with my family. My 12 year old nephew was uncomfortable being there, as well as my daughter, we were constantly being stared at by other customers and ignored by the servers. We decided to leave and walked out the door. I understand it was around lunch time, lots of customers but the Blatant disregard of Decentness was shocking and sad. I had been there other times for lunch and sometimes treated ok. The food is good but I hate think it was because of race but it definitely felt like it. ( hate to say it but it was all white customers in the restaurant). read more

There's not enough words to say how awesome this place is. The waitstaff is friendly and knowledgeable. They go above and beyond to give the best service and make you happy. Drinks stayed full the whole time! Chicken fried steak is fork tender and flavorful. Best CFS I've had in a long time. Hamburger steak was packed full of flavor and juicy. Juicy Chicken tenders, large perfectly cooked baked potatoes, hand cut fries all were great. Even the salad was good. Fried pickles were thick and the dipping sauce was spicy and delicious. We were not blown away by the onion rings but we will give it another try next time. The yeast rolls were warm and fresh. So tasty! Feels warm and inviting from the moment you walk in. This place is a must stop. I was skeptical but there is lots of parking. If you are lucky to park under the shade during the Texas heat...even better. I wasn't sure if you checked in when you walked in or what. They were pretty busy and I didn't see a table right off. A waitress pointed out where to sit and then another came to take drink orders and give us menus. Very nice service. We had the Jody cheese burger, tasty. Tried waffle and regular fries, both were good. I would recommend this place while in Temple. Good prices but it is cash only. read more

Really great fried pickles that are crisp yet juicy. Fried okra was also flavorful and great. I highly suggest the fried mozzarella sticks. The Jody burger was crisp, flavorful, juicy and the bread was fluffy. Great burgers I would have to say. Only downside is they only accept cash but there is an indoor ATM. read more
