I was excited to get some ramen at Oiistar. It was Sunday and we arrived just before 5:30. For some reason we thought it would be a slow night, but boy howdy were we wrong! When we walked in there was already a line. I put in our name and received a "welcome to the waitlist" text at 5:27. I think they told me it would be 30 minutes. We went next store to peruse the art gallery. I got a text they were ready to seat us at 5:44 - a pretty quick turnaround. We were seated at the bar, which wasn't idea but beggars can't be choosers. Turns out they took great care of us. David started with a tempura shrimp bun. It looked wonderful. He didn't share any insights on the flavor, but he cleaned the plate! Two of us ordered #3, PAITAN SHIO with FUKUOKA ROASTED GARLIC RAMEN. I added ground pork to mine. David had the SPICY GARLIC SHOYUMEN. There was nothing I didn't love about my ramen. The ground pork was a delicious addition, providing a nice meaty flavor to every bite. I thought the pork belly was wonderful. Mark found it too fatty, but I think that's to be expected. I was nervous about the bamboo shoots, but my concerns were unfounded. The bamboo shoots were small, delicate and delectable. There are so many options, if we lived in the area we would come back often in order to taste all the options. If you love ramen and haven't been to Oiistar, do yourself a favor and check it out.
This might be my new favorite ramen spot! As someone loyal to Gyuro Ramen for their rich gyukotsu broth, I wasn't expecting to be blown away, but Oiistar completely exceeded expectations. Umami Ramen - Absolutely incredible. The broth has this perfect umami depth that rivals the best tonkotsu I've had. Spice level 2 was spot-on, flavorful heat without overwhelming the complex miso base. The Berkshire pork belly literally melts in your mouth, and they're generous with both meat and broth portions. This is easily two meals worth of food and completely satisfying. Bao Buns: Berkshire Pork Belly Bun - This set the bar high and delivered. The pork belly is rich and flavorful (essentially the same as what's in the ramen), with great contrast from the cucumber and daikon sprout. The sweet sake soy reduction ties it all together beautifully. Must try. Tempura Shrimp Bun - Good but not memorable. The shrimp was well-battered but got lost under too much pickled fennel slaw. The Thai sweet chili mayo was nice, but wouldn't order again. Service was excellent - staff helped me pick my ramen and gave great recommendations. The atmosphere is perfect for a casual ramen experience, and thoughtful touches like having a proper coat rack show they care about the details. Highly recommend!
It's a little bit overpriced for ramen in my opinion, but the portions are pretty big so I was able to stretch this bowl over two meals. Good flavor and great chunks of pork.
Late Review This past spring I came here while I was pregnant craving ramen for the umpteenth time. I've ordered take out from Oiistar twice but never sat down to eat. Finally decided to and had the best server. He said he'd been working there for about 10 years and knew everything on the menu. Perfect timing for me as I was 8 months. We initially ordered the pork belly bao bun and one other I can't remember the name of. He accidentally sent out the shrimp bao bun and let us keep it (glad he did because it was best out of 3). For the ramen, I was looking for a specific item that wasn't on the menu anymore but he pointed out all I had to do was swap broths. Naturally, I don't remember the item but it was absolutely delicious. It's a fairly small restaurant so not expecting any upscale cocktails but I would have enjoyed a non-alcoholic beverage that wasn't a fountain drink. I ended up sticking with water. Did I mention my server was great? Loved my experience! Overall 8.5/10
Pretty solid spot for some ramen (4.5/5 stars)! My friend and I visited here on a Tuesday afternoon so thankfully there was a good amount of space for street parking. Right when we walked in, we were greeted by a very welcoming/friendly server who took us to our seat. I enjoyed how open and aired out the restaurant felt. The big windows also allowed so much natural lighting to come in which felt nice during lunch time. This is what my friend and I ordered: Tonkatsu Buns Umami (Spicy Level 2) Paitan Shio Fried Garlic Chicken Sambal Both ramens had a savory, rich broth which was very satisfying. The char shiu (pork belly) was an absolute star- so tender and flavorful (honestly the best I've had in a while). The portions are also pretty large too so I had to take my leftovers to go. The Tonkatsu Buns were good but nothing really special in my opinion. As for the fried garlic chicken, the flavor was spot on but the texture was okay- I wish it wasa tad bit crispier since the sauce made the exterior a little soft. Overall, my friend and I had a pleasant experience at Oiistar and we can't wait to come back and try more items from the menu!
I met this restaurant on the 2019, after a long trip for work out of Chicag, it was one of those days that I came back on O'hare and didn't want to go home and cook. Looked for places for lunch and I was craving for ramen, Oiistar popped up on my screen and I decided to go over there. For 6 years this place has been consistent, the food just get better with time and it is amazing. Everytime a friend of mine suggest maybe they don't like ramen, or they know what is a good ramen, I would say immediately: Let me take you to this place and we talk later about a good ramen. Everytime, I order the Bershire pork buns and the oiimen ramen for my friends to try, and they always love how sweet and tender is the meat (you can tell it is berkshire pork for sure), the soup is always on point and the noodled is amazing! The waiter always make sure that we have everything we need and that my friends always have the pleasure to enjoy a good ramen (even in the busiest days they had been really nice). The best thing, they have a patio for summer and music is not too loud, you can easily eat, talk and enjoy with your friends anytime.
Delicious ramen with the most flavorful and rich broth! I always drop by Oiistar when I'm in Chicago because it has never failed me. As someone who lives in Asia, ramen is not new to me. Still, Oiistar takes the cake when it comes to ramen here in the US. I have tried another ramen place in Wicker Park (that already closed) and it cannot compare to the flavors of Oiistar ramen. Servings were generous. The pork belly was melt-in-your-mouth tender. Service was quick and efficient. Overall, I always have a great time in Oiistar.
I called ahead on a Friday night to ask about the wait and the girl on the phone was so sweet. When I got there, the wait was about twenty minutes, which was not bad at all for a packed restaurant. The waiter, however, was not the nicest and the overall vibe from him felt a bit rude, even though he did not explicitly say anything. The food itself was honestly a big disappointment given all the hype. The garlic chicken was decent and surprisingly more flavorful than the ramen. Both ramen dishes lacked depth and flavor. They did have a nice creamy texture and generous portions, but overall there are definitely better ramen spots in the city.
Good ramen at a popular spot! It was packed, but four of us were able to be sat a community style like long table in the back essentially right away. Things worth noting: 1. There weren't purse/coat hooks at the table, but they did have a coat rack to use at the front. 2. I got the #6 Oiimen Classic (Spicy Level 1) and there was no spice at all. I broth was delicious though! I believe the spice level options are 0-3 and I can't speak to how spicy 2 and 3 are. 3. They are able to split your check into a maximum of 4 separate checks but there is an additional $2 charge for each additional card. We just had one person pay and we venmoed them.
A classic ramen spot that hits the spot with zero frills. The garlic ramen was very flavorful but it definitely could use more garlic since it is in the name. The fried chicken was exceptional and unique with its thin but crispy crust. It was doused in a sweet sauce but spicy can be opted for. Highly recommend both when you visit. Great atmosphere to bring a group of friends to socialize over ramen. The servers were attentive even when it was super busy. I'd come back next time I'm in Chicago.
Wonderful time at Oiistar. We were able to sit outside quickly and our waiter came and greeted up promptly. The pork bun is PHENOMENAL. Absolutely worth the hype. The ramen is generous in portions with ample to take home. Wicker park fest was going in the background but still wasn't too loud. We weren't super packed with other tables which made for a comfortable environment. Looking forward to returning.
My mom and I were looking for something reliably delicious and we found it here! Generous helpings for fairly affordable cost for a big city ramen spot (took plenty home for leftovers) - service was attentive and the interior of this place is pretty sleek/modern and appealing.
5 stars is for the ramen bowl I had, because I just can't stop thinking about the flavor. I ordered the spicy garlic shoyumen ramen, and although it wasn't as garlic-y as I'd hoped, the spices and the miso broth was just perfect. It was a huge bowl for the price you pay, and my friend couldn't finish hers. The drink I had, the Oiijmoji wasn't as tasty as I'd hoped, though, but I won't judge this place based on that since it is a ramen place. We went for a late lunch at around 4pm, and the place was near empty, so we were seated immediately. Service was all right, quick, no complaints. I particularly enjoyed the fact that the place is opened to the outside and they also have a patio. read more

I came with a group of 3 and every dish we had was excellent. Appetizers - we had the Berkshire Pork Belly bun and the Duxelles. The pork was tender and flavorful, and the Duxelles had a great rich taste with a kick of spice. Main courses - Umami, Oiimen Classic, and Musclemen. I can only speak for the Musclemen, which was quite rich and spicy (in a good way) and the mussels were fresh, but I've been assured by my party the other two ramen bowls were great as well. True highlight of this place is the signature red sangria. It's a must if you're new and want to get something special. They make a point to highlight it in their menu, as they should. read more

I'm not Japanese but I've been to Japan enough times to know what good ramen is like.... And this is it. This is only the second ramen shop I've tried in the US that I can comfortably call authentic. The soul of a bowl of ramen is always the broth. It's not always easy to tell apart MSG overload and genuinely made pork bone broth, but I can assure you this is the real deal. The flavour is both intense and mellow at the same time, very complex. And I'm not one for usinf these phrases very often when describing food. One really great thing about oiistar is that they offer a choice of Hakata and Tokyo style ramen. The Tokyo style being the more widely known style, thicker and chewier. But I've always preferred Hakata style which is slim and generally more firm, and it's great that they make this a choice. Also highly recommended is the duck breast bun. The ingenious addition of raisin made the whole thing that much better. Bravo to that. The restaurant it self is also excellent. The interior is very stylish with great vibe. The bar is long and comfortable to sit at and even on a Saturday night its not filled(!!!). Staff are very nice and courteous. Best of all, quite affordable. $15 for a very large bowl of ramen and 4.5 for the bun. With certainly come again next time I'm in Chicago. 5 star quality for only 2$ sign. IMPRRSSED. read more

Oiistar gets all the stars! We ordered the Oiimen and Musclemen Ramen. The broths were delicious. Service was great. Our server explained that even level-3 spice was not too spicy. Level 3 was good for me. My husband asked for extra spice on the side to take his broth up to a level 5. Do not snooze on the wings! They are so crispy and smothered in a delicious saucy. We got spicy, which still had a bit sweetness to it. read more
During my current trip to Chicago tried this super awesome place I discovered ! I wish I could rate them more than 5 but sad there is no way though would love to So came here with family as they love this Awesome place Also before I start my review want to share my strong dislike for pork belly and this place actually redefined pork belly for me To start with orderd bao pork shoulder / pork belly and Tonkatsu Except tonkatsu the pork belly and shoulder was super excellent Did I actually enjoy pork belly couldn't believe it but yes I really really did couldn't get over it Then ordered their spicy garlic Ramen noodle soup with pork belly again They say their pork products are the best and Yes they sure are. This was the best ramen I ever ever ate Wow !! The pork belly was super awesome and melts in ur mouth What great taste !! This is so far my favourite restaurant in Chicago Wish they would open an outlet in Toronto too This is a must visit during my future trips to Chicago Not to miss Loved their huge bowl like soup spoons Great experience!! read more
Wicker Park, in general, has a vibrant nightlife all year round. However, we Chicagoans know that summer time is our "prime time." It's especially fun to cruise near the CTA Damen Blue Line station at our 60-degrees-Fahrenheit midsummer night. Oiistar isn't too far from the Damen Blue Line station; its approximately ten (10)-minute walking distance southbound along Milwaukee Ave. Eating ramen is analogical to be covered by my favorite blanket or snuggie. In other words, a great bowl of ramen gives me a sense of security, comfort, and belonging. Ramen in Oiistar might not be, by definition, the most authentic, yet I thought whatever I had was one of the better "fusion" ramen I've encountered in the city. I knew that Oiimen appeared to be a popular choice, but I noticed that Chaldomen received many accolades as well. I went with the Chaldomen, for it showcased ground pork, bean sprouts, and pickled veggies in the spicy broth. The level of greasiness of Chaldomen was acceptable. In my recollection, I thought the ramen in Strings and Wasabi were grease-heavy. I believe the presence of fresh bean sprouts were helpful to reduce the greasy sensation in my stomach. Hubby's spicy veggiemen contained many vegetarians' favorites: tofu, avocado, and zucchini. Most ramen joints in Chicago offers at least one (1) vegetarian option, so I would say Oiistar could be vegetarian-friendly. My first impression on Oiistar was positive. Obviously, it's a friendly spot for youngsters to hang out. It's also intimate, but not over-the-top romantic. Thus, it's an appropriate first-date dinner place in my opinion. Of course, the food hubby and I had this evening was delicious! I will certainly spread the good words of Oiistar to others. read more
Ramen used to be something quick, cheap and easy that I make at home when I was feeling lazy. Ramen was never something I went out and ordered at a restaurant. Then one day, I found myself in Canada where a local suggested we have Ramen for lunch. How long has ramen shops been a thing? I have no idea, but I found myself trying different ramen places in Canada after that. Fast forward to today, and someone made a ramen dinner suggestion. How long has ramen shops been in Chicago? I guess it's still not something I think about going out for. I was looking forward to trying the ramen here since it's been a while since I went out for ramen. $14!! For ramen?!?! It better be good and you know what? It was the BEST damn ramen I've ever had. I debated between the modern and the classic and ended up ordering the Oiimen (classic) ramen. The broth was creamy, flavorful and amazing. The noodles were exquisite. I wanted to eat until my stomach burst, but my stomach is tiny and I took what I couldn't finish home (and it was still good the next day!). I subtracted a star because this was also the most expensive ramen I've ever had. I also tried one of their buns, which is made in open face style atop the most deliciously doughy buns I've ever had. The buns are about $4 each. Pay street parking was easy to find in front of the restaurant on a week night. read more
Ah, this is one of the contenders for the "Top Ramen in Chicago" title alongside Wasabi, Furious Spoon, and others. Well I came for the ramen so I can only vouch for the ramen. Based on the reviews I knew I had to try either the Classic or Umami. I opted for the Umami. Guys - listen to the reviews that say the ramen portion is huuuge. I can usually finish big bowls of noodles pretty easily but I struggled with this one. Next, the broth. While I definitely enjoyed the broth (very flavorful, not too salty thank GOD), I think the Classic was better (stole some from a friend). The Umami felt like it had too much going on...again, not bad per se, but I personally prefer the Classic's taste more. The noodles were chewy and cooked well. With a place this fancy, I wish we had the option to customize and choose our noodles like many places in New York. Service was prompt and friendly, though sometimes things get a little crazy when there are more people. It's also really DARK inside the restaurant when we went...not sure if this was a one-time thing. They have limited outdoor seating which was nice, but you're right on the sidewalk and it's a pretty pedestrian-heavy area... so just FYI. Overall definitely worth checking out! I don't know if I can give a verdict on whether Oiistar serves the BEST ramen in Chicago, but there are definitely qualities that make it a strong contender. read more

Great noodles and other things to choose from. The drinks are also good I tried the Oii Moji and it was refreshing, it was a bit weak but maybe because it is me. The Tempura Shrimp was good as well as the Musclemen, it is often my choice, and the Pozolmen. Our server did not come around too much but often enough, I like that. Will keep coming back. The location is good since it is in Wicker Park and as for the Decor is simple and Chic. You can either seat at a table, or even in front of the kitchen at the bar. Come alone or with a group of friends. read more
Oiimen Ramen had exceptional depth and complexity of flavor, pork belly melted in my mouth and all in all some of the best ramen I have ever tried. I also tried the Oii Salad which was simple, but delicious. The interior was quaint and warm and staff was incredibly attentive and accommodating. I would absolutely go out of my way to enjoy this ramen again! read more

Great date night ramen spot! Casual and very easy to get a table. Huge portions definitely recommend sharing! read more
The portions here are outta control. Not sure if it was a fluke but I swear their ramen bowls had 1.5x the amount of noodles and meat that every other ramen place serves in Chicago. I'm not complaining, I like a good bang for your buck. I heard this place used to be a top place for ramen when it first started getting big in Chicago. It took us a while to come here, so to us it tasted like most other ramen bowls in the city. The fried chicken is good. It's actual fried chicken whole pieces, not karaage. Tuna carpaccio was not worth it at all. Bland, and the quality of fish was meh. I believe there are better tasting ramen bowls in the city, but the people here are super nice, decent food, and good quantities. read more

Came on a Saturday at 6:30pm, and fortunately, was able to snag a table for 4. Still, I recommend coming early, because many of the empty seats were reserved for 7/7:30 seatings. The service, though friendly, was slightly disorganized. A waiter came to take our order, and then 5 minutes later, another waiter came to our table unaware that we had already ordered. As for the food, I was able to try: The Classic Oiimen - Sadly, just average. Though the noodles had a good texture, the broth was very bland, the meat was tough, and there weren't many extra ingredients in the ramen. Tempura Shrimp Bun - Okay, not really memorable. I did enjoy the thai chili mayo, but felt that there could have been more shrimp & fennel slaw. Fried Garlic Chicken (Sambal) - My favorite dish of the night. Great spicy taste and the chicken was perfectly crispy, with the fried skin separating from the meat (sounds weird, but you'll know what I mean if you try it). Overall, the meal was enjoyable, but not memorable. I prefer the ramen at Wasabi, and the chicken at Dak or Crisp. I'd say, if you're in the area, it's a safe bet for a good meal, but if you're looking to be blown away or really craving the BEST ramen/chicken in Chicago, choose another option. read more
OMGEE Oiistar had really good ramen and yummy buns! I had the Goki Bun and it was so tasteful. The meat that it was marinated in, was so flavorful. The lettuce, cilantro, and onion was able to balance out the flavorful taste of the BBQ beef. I also had ramen and it was so delicious. I love how amazing the broth taste and the noodles were just perfect. However, customer service was really bad. It took them so long to get our order and they would take orders from guest the arrived later than us. Note to self: Try not to go around dinner time because it gets pack and especially with a big party like 5 people, it takes awhile to be seated. read more

Oiistar is not your traditional Japanese ramen joint. It brings a blend of both traditional and modern stylings in a trendy environment. Having been to plenty of ramen spots before in Chicago, I'm glad to say oiistar stands out among the crowd with its generous portions and vivid flavors. Sambal Fried Garlic Chicken - With Oiistar, you have your choice of sambal or sweet. Coming from Asia I opted for the sambal and was hit with a delectable taste with the sauce. The chicken meat itself doesn't have much flavor so I would recommend taking a bite into the crispy skin and then dipping the flesh into the sauce. Score of 3.5/5 Oiimen - The standard go-to option for ramen filled with pork belly mushrooms with a broth that packs a punch. The soup has a deep flavor and the portions are huge. I typically end up sharing the ramen with my friend while splitting an appetizer, which is a testament to the size of the meal. Would also recommend adding some brisket or additional meat if you are sharing. Score of 4/5 Overall Oiistar is one of the rare places where the meat, broth and noodles meet the standard of what I would good ramen. Highly recommend to give the place a try. read more

My friend and I were seated immediately at 9pm on a Saturday evening! The very friendly servers checked in on us frequently as we settled in and enjoyed our meal even with the restaurant so busy. The prices look just a tad above average, but once your food arrives you absolutely WILL NOT be disappointed. The bowls were deep, wide, and seemed never-ending with the perfectly cooked and textured ramen noodles! I ordered the chadolmen (korean style) ramen and tonkatsu (pork cutlet) bun, both perfect for my savory meat-crazed tendencies. I've had a lot of great ramen throughout my childhood in honolulu and this was VERY much on par with those, dare I say more creative and satisfyingly filling. One thing, though, is I wish there was a spicier ramen option for those craving a thrill and good ol sinus clearing. Regardless there are so many other fantastic flavor options I'd go for. Oiistar, I'll be back as soon as I catch my next amtrak back to Chicago!! read more

This might be one of my top favorite restaurants in Chicago! I got the Paitan Shio Ramen and everything about it was perfect. The broth was super flavorful and creamy. The egg was a perfect jammy egg. The pork belly melted in my mouth. It came out piping hot and felt like a hug in my stomach. The service was quick and I feel like every time I go the wait isn't too long. Highly recommend! read more

THE GOOD: fried beef ball appetizer (Duxelles), cold draft beer, window seats, service, noodles THE BAD: duck breast bun, pork belly THE VERDICT: good for two people looking to share a bowel off noodles with great broth and a few beers. Cute little place that's the perfect spot for these cold winter nights. My husband and I both got the chicken ramen (Tikkamen) and subbed the broth for the veggie one. My husband added brisket and I added tofu. They were so flavorful and filling. The fried chicken was a deliciously unique touch and definitely elevated the dish. Honestly, the portion is huge that we definitely did not need to add our extras in there. It's nice that they have the veggie broth option, but he said we could only sub it for the chicken one because the flavors worked better. We don't eat pork, so I'd rather try another bowl with the veggie broth that may not be a perfect match, than not try it at all. Overall, excellent dinner. We got some bao buns (fish and duck) which were delicious, but we definitely did not need it with how filling the ramen was going to be. read more

I came here today with a friend. We ordered -Duck buns: soft bread but needs a kick of flavor. The micro greens were nice, but would have liked some heat or something. -Spicy pork spare ribs: flavorful but overdone. It was pretty tough to eat and I was really hoping for some floss after the meal. -Musselmen: noodles had a nice bite, which I expected since they're homemade. It was decently spicy which made me really happy. The portion would have been enough for 2 small bowls. The mussels were chewy and I was a bit worried that they were going to be overdone, which they weren't. Broth wasn't too milky/creamy as compared to other ramen places. -House mimosa: the big jar by the bar is impressive but it didn't wow me. Friend ordered the veggie ramen which looked quite good. It wasn't a cop-out ramen dish. Overall, we enjoyed ourselves. I wished the music was a little softer because it was hard to hear the person in front of me. Also, the service could have been a bit more attentive. Maybe it was because we came right when they opened? If I wanted seafood ramen, I would go here. But if I wanted a milky pork ramen, Wasabi is still better. Total meal was $64. read more
What's not to love about a hot, comforting bowl of ramen noodles? I came here for lunch with my sister and loved the hip ambiance. We shared an order of the tempura avocado and mushrooms. It was served with a miso pesto which was certainly different and delicious. The real standout were the noodles. I had the Korean inspired bowl, recommended by my server who informed me that the chef was Korean. I love Korean food, so it didn't disappoint. There was beef, ground pork, greens, thin ramen, spicy broth, kimchi and a soft boiled egg. The dish was packed with flavor! The broth was so yummy; I was glad we were given giant ladels to lap it all up. The pieces are reasonable, and the portions big. Come hungry, leave happy! read more

Oiistar portions are huge for the price of their ramen, $14 a bowl easily twice as large as the other hip ramen joints in the city. In terms of flavor though, Strings wins on both its noodle texture and broth richness. However, Oiistar is a good option if you want bang for your buck in terms of ramen . We got the pork belly bun ($4), which was a bit steep but it was a generous size. The sauce was a little bit salty though. It came with micro greens that resembled clover. Onto the ramen: I tried the Oiistar classic as well as umami. I thought the pork could have been fattier, and it was marinated in a straight soy sauce so I couldn't get the true essence of PORK. The noodles were the thin kind but still had al dente texture. I liked the wood ear and bamboo shoots for texture. The egg was decent. However, the flavor was not rich. They make their own sangria which is pretty cool though. read more

Are you on the hunt for the ramen in the city? Look no further. Oiistar is the best in all of Chicago. It may not look like a fancy restaurant, but everything on the menu tastes like a gourmet, Michelin-star meal. I ordered the Spicy Garlic Shoyumen per our server's recommendation. It comes with a savory umami broth, perfectly cooked noodles, soft boiled eggs, pork belly that melts in your mouth, and much more. It was the perfect meal to have on a chilly Chicago afternoon. PS - the Spicy Garlic Shoyumen was even featured on the Food Network! read more
After having tried almost all the popular (and unpopular) ramen shops in Chicago, I have to say Oiistar is at the top of my list. I love how big the portions are. I can always finish my ramen, but at Oiistar I felt like I still had half left when I was feeling full. You definitely should try and make reservations for this place, as it seems to always be super busy and packed. Really want to try their Bao next time I'm here since I've read so much about it. Does seem pricier than the ramen though at $4 a piece. read more
