I was excited to get some ramen at Oiistar. It was Sunday and we arrived just before 5:30. For some reason we thought it would be a slow night, but boy howdy were we wrong! When we walked in there was already a line. I put in our name and received a "welcome to the waitlist" text at 5:27. I think they told me it would be 30 minutes. We went next store to peruse the art gallery. I got a text they were ready to seat us at 5:44 - a pretty quick turnaround. We were seated at the bar, which wasn't idea but beggars can't be choosers. Turns out they took great care of us. David started with a tempura shrimp bun. It looked wonderful. He didn't share any insights on the flavor, but he cleaned the plate! Two of us ordered #3, PAITAN SHIO with FUKUOKA ROASTED GARLIC RAMEN. I added ground pork to mine. David had the SPICY GARLIC SHOYUMEN. There was nothing I didn't love about my ramen. The ground pork was a delicious addition, providing a nice meaty flavor to every bite. I thought the pork belly was wonderful. Mark found it too fatty, but I think that's to be expected. I was nervous about the bamboo shoots, but my concerns were unfounded. The bamboo shoots were small, delicate and delectable. There are so many options, if we lived in the area we would come back often in order to taste all the options. If you love ramen and haven't been to Oiistar, do yourself a favor and check it out.
This might be my new favorite ramen spot! As someone loyal to Gyuro Ramen for their rich gyukotsu broth, I wasn't expecting to be blown away, but Oiistar completely exceeded expectations. Umami Ramen - Absolutely incredible. The broth has this perfect umami depth that rivals the best tonkotsu I've had. Spice level 2 was spot-on, flavorful heat without overwhelming the complex miso base. The Berkshire pork belly literally melts in your mouth, and they're generous with both meat and broth portions. This is easily two meals worth of food and completely satisfying. Bao Buns: Berkshire Pork Belly Bun - This set the bar high and delivered. The pork belly is rich and flavorful (essentially the same as what's in the ramen), with great contrast from the cucumber and daikon sprout. The sweet sake soy reduction ties it all together beautifully. Must try. Tempura Shrimp Bun - Good but not memorable. The shrimp was well-battered but got lost under too much pickled fennel slaw. The Thai sweet chili mayo was nice, but wouldn't order again. Service was excellent - staff helped me pick my ramen and gave great recommendations. The atmosphere is perfect for a casual ramen experience, and thoughtful touches like having a proper coat rack show they care about the details. Highly recommend!
It's a little bit overpriced for ramen in my opinion, but the portions are pretty big so I was able to stretch this bowl over two meals. Good flavor and great chunks of pork.
Late Review This past spring I came here while I was pregnant craving ramen for the umpteenth time. I've ordered take out from Oiistar twice but never sat down to eat. Finally decided to and had the best server. He said he'd been working there for about 10 years and knew everything on the menu. Perfect timing for me as I was 8 months. We initially ordered the pork belly bao bun and one other I can't remember the name of. He accidentally sent out the shrimp bao bun and let us keep it (glad he did because it was best out of 3). For the ramen, I was looking for a specific item that wasn't on the menu anymore but he pointed out all I had to do was swap broths. Naturally, I don't remember the item but it was absolutely delicious. It's a fairly small restaurant so not expecting any upscale cocktails but I would have enjoyed a non-alcoholic beverage that wasn't a fountain drink. I ended up sticking with water. Did I mention my server was great? Loved my experience! Overall 8.5/10
Pretty solid spot for some ramen (4.5/5 stars)! My friend and I visited here on a Tuesday afternoon so thankfully there was a good amount of space for street parking. Right when we walked in, we were greeted by a very welcoming/friendly server who took us to our seat. I enjoyed how open and aired out the restaurant felt. The big windows also allowed so much natural lighting to come in which felt nice during lunch time. This is what my friend and I ordered: Tonkatsu Buns Umami (Spicy Level 2) Paitan Shio Fried Garlic Chicken Sambal Both ramens had a savory, rich broth which was very satisfying. The char shiu (pork belly) was an absolute star- so tender and flavorful (honestly the best I've had in a while). The portions are also pretty large too so I had to take my leftovers to go. The Tonkatsu Buns were good but nothing really special in my opinion. As for the fried garlic chicken, the flavor was spot on but the texture was okay- I wish it wasa tad bit crispier since the sauce made the exterior a little soft. Overall, my friend and I had a pleasant experience at Oiistar and we can't wait to come back and try more items from the menu!
I met this restaurant on the 2019, after a long trip for work out of Chicag, it was one of those days that I came back on O'hare and didn't want to go home and cook. Looked for places for lunch and I was craving for ramen, Oiistar popped up on my screen and I decided to go over there. For 6 years this place has been consistent, the food just get better with time and it is amazing. Everytime a friend of mine suggest maybe they don't like ramen, or they know what is a good ramen, I would say immediately: Let me take you to this place and we talk later about a good ramen. Everytime, I order the Bershire pork buns and the oiimen ramen for my friends to try, and they always love how sweet and tender is the meat (you can tell it is berkshire pork for sure), the soup is always on point and the noodled is amazing! The waiter always make sure that we have everything we need and that my friends always have the pleasure to enjoy a good ramen (even in the busiest days they had been really nice). The best thing, they have a patio for summer and music is not too loud, you can easily eat, talk and enjoy with your friends anytime.
Delicious ramen with the most flavorful and rich broth! I always drop by Oiistar when I'm in Chicago because it has never failed me. As someone who lives in Asia, ramen is not new to me. Still, Oiistar takes the cake when it comes to ramen here in the US. I have tried another ramen place in Wicker Park (that already closed) and it cannot compare to the flavors of Oiistar ramen. Servings were generous. The pork belly was melt-in-your-mouth tender. Service was quick and efficient. Overall, I always have a great time in Oiistar.
I called ahead on a Friday night to ask about the wait and the girl on the phone was so sweet. When I got there, the wait was about twenty minutes, which was not bad at all for a packed restaurant. The waiter, however, was not the nicest and the overall vibe from him felt a bit rude, even though he did not explicitly say anything. The food itself was honestly a big disappointment given all the hype. The garlic chicken was decent and surprisingly more flavorful than the ramen. Both ramen dishes lacked depth and flavor. They did have a nice creamy texture and generous portions, but overall there are definitely better ramen spots in the city.
Good ramen at a popular spot! It was packed, but four of us were able to be sat a community style like long table in the back essentially right away. Things worth noting: 1. There weren't purse/coat hooks at the table, but they did have a coat rack to use at the front. 2. I got the #6 Oiimen Classic (Spicy Level 1) and there was no spice at all. I broth was delicious though! I believe the spice level options are 0-3 and I can't speak to how spicy 2 and 3 are. 3. They are able to split your check into a maximum of 4 separate checks but there is an additional $2 charge for each additional card. We just had one person pay and we venmoed them.
A classic ramen spot that hits the spot with zero frills. The garlic ramen was very flavorful but it definitely could use more garlic since it is in the name. The fried chicken was exceptional and unique with its thin but crispy crust. It was doused in a sweet sauce but spicy can be opted for. Highly recommend both when you visit. Great atmosphere to bring a group of friends to socialize over ramen. The servers were attentive even when it was super busy. I'd come back next time I'm in Chicago.
Wonderful time at Oiistar. We were able to sit outside quickly and our waiter came and greeted up promptly. The pork bun is PHENOMENAL. Absolutely worth the hype. The ramen is generous in portions with ample to take home. Wicker park fest was going in the background but still wasn't too loud. We weren't super packed with other tables which made for a comfortable environment. Looking forward to returning.
My mom and I were looking for something reliably delicious and we found it here! Generous helpings for fairly affordable cost for a big city ramen spot (took plenty home for leftovers) - service was attentive and the interior of this place is pretty sleek/modern and appealing.

Alright - hear me out , it can't be a coincidence that multiple people have gotten violently ill after eating here . It wasn't but 5 minutes after leaving the restaurant that I had to make a pit stop at a grocery store. Besides getting sick after the meal the food was overall really good. The bao was amazing and soft , the ramen had a great flavor and the karage was crisped to perfection. One of the best ramen places I've been to (especially for apps!). Prior to getting sick I said I'd definitely come back - however after the evening I am having I can't say that I would come back here - and I've already thrown out all my leftovers. read more
Visiting from LA, I had very high expectations for my ramen. But my friend recommended this spot, even though it was a little further from her house, but I said sure! Because I will travel for good food. When we walked in, the smell! OMG that is how I knew we were in the right place because you could smell the fragrance of the ramen. I chose the umami, which is rated level 2 spicy, but I also tacked on suicide spicy paste to kick it up a bit, plus a little cold sake. The ramen lived up to expectation, especially on a chilly night. The flavor was perfect, especially once I added some paste, and the pork belly was to die for! I didn't think I was that hungry, but I devoured that entire bowl. I would love one of these to open up near me. There will be a wait, but there's an awesome barcade across the street to grab drinks at while you wait, and they'll text you when your table is ready. read more
Ambiance/service: pretty nice overall restaurant, but it is a tad small and there can be crowding. How a party of 14 and they had the table ready right when it was time for our reservation so that was nice. Our service was good, they even accommodated us when we had a few extra show up. Food: onto what really matters. I thought the ramen was excellent. I got the garlic tonkotsu and as good as the broth was (and it was rich, flavorful, and overall excellent) the pork was the real star of the show. It was so juicy and melted in your mouth. Some of the best I've had at a ramen restaurant. The noodles were to my liking. They were a touch firm and had good texture. Overall I was really satisfied with the meal as was the rest of the party. read more
I've been here twice because my friend loves it, saying its the best ramen in the city. Well, anything is possible. The space is pretty tiny and it can get very crowded, staff though are pretty nice and try to accommodate as much as possible given the tight quarters. My first visit I had the Chadolmen, an easy choice; a little Korean influence that was pretty good, and I figured the broth wasn't as rich since because of it, not bad. My most recent visit I got the Spicy Garlic Shoyumen, something a little more traditional so I figured the flavor profile would be similar. The broth was pretty flat, even after popping the yolk into it. There's just a richness there that's missing, which I think is so critical in a ramen, even if it's a fusion dish that isn't present. read more
Quaint ramen bar in Wicker Park. Sat at the bar, server was friendly. Got the mashed and duck buns, exploding with flavor and a soft/fluffy bun. Ramen was excellent, the broth was so hearty and flavorful. Got the garlic ramen and the tikkamen. Both were incredible but going back, I'd get the tikkamen again. Can't wait to bring friends here to try more. read more

I've heard many good things about this ramen shop and finally went to visit it myself. For appetizers, my friends and I ordered the sweet fried garlic chicken and shared some buns (Berkshire Pork Belly & Tonkatsu). The fried garlic chicken was DELICIOUS. Out of the 2 buns, the pork belly bun was probably my favorite. The belly just melts in your mouth and every bite of the bun is just so flavorful. As for the ramen, I got the Paitan Shio but spicy. Their ramen the serving size was pretty big! I was glad the pork belly included in the ramen was a good size too. The broth was so tasty and not too watery nor creamy. Other ramen places tend to give smaller pieces but you get the bang for your buck with their ramen! Oiistar is more on the pricey side but the food is worth it. Great place for lunch or dinner with friends or even date night. read more
This was the perfect place to stop in for dinner on a cold Chicago night. We were seeing a show next door, so we decided to pop in and try this place. It was packed, but we only had to wait about 15 minutes. We were seated at the counter which was fun because we could watch them in the kitchen. We started with the shrimp tempura bun. It was so good, the perfect size the split as a little appetizer. It also came out super fast. I ordered the Oiistar classic ramen bowl. It was so comforting on a cold night. The broth was really flavorful, as was everything in the bowl. The ramen bowls were huge, so if I were to go back I may split one and try a few more of the steamed buns. Service was fast and quick, and it was a filling and affordable meal. We will definitely be back! read more
Came here on a rainy day and naturally this place is flooded with people. There's no waiting room and you have to awkwardly stand in other people's way. We were able to grab a seat within 20-30 mins on a Saturday night. My boyfriend and I shared two baos and each got a bowl of ramen. To be honest, the baos are a mess and not easy to eat. There's so much stacked up on each other you can't even close the bar. It got to the point if not even being able to eat everything on the bao to fully enjoy the plate. The ramen was also just ok. I got the spicy ramen and I felt the noodles could be a bit thicker. The pork had a seafood funk to it. read more

Overall: Definitely will be returning in the future, as Oiistar had the best Ramen place I've had in Chicago! Food: - Spicy Garlic Ramen was very flavorful. It was more zesty than spicy even though it was a spicy level 2. The meat was better than what I usually experience at Ramen San or other Ramen places in the Chicagoland area. - Duck Breast Bun was good but less interesting than anticipated; the duck was not crispy, and flavor was a little bland. - Berkshire Pork Belly Bun had a sweet barbecue sauce combined with a salty and tender pork belly. Service was good and the food came out quicker than anticipated. One minor thing would be that the tables were cramped and the chairs we had were wooden boxes by the window. read more

Apparently, it is an in and out ramen place and they want you out as soon as food arrives And also their manager John is a racist towards Asians. I did not enjoy the service and felt very discriminated. No one likes to be rushed and I was there 20mins and had to leave because they kept coming to me to take away the food I just ordered. If you an Asian please do not go here! While people around me were having their sweet time and enjoying their meal, the manager took away and meal I got. The table next to me: couple of two white people were still enjoying their meal and no one attempted to take away their meal. I came there with my sister and I was treated differently because I was asian. I have never treated this away in any places. I am not a sensitive person and never bring out racial issue. however they clearly wanted me to leave as soon as possible. I understand if every client was rushed the same way I was and if they had people line up, but they had no other clients to get seated. So it is clearly racial discrimination. From the pictures you can see that I have received the bowl of ramen at 7:20pm. Within 15mins John, who is the manager, started coming out to me and attempting the take the food away. Seriously the most horrible service I have ever received. My food arrived at 7:20pm and at 7:45pm in just 15-20mins the manager asked me if he came and asked take away the meal twice and at the end I was like fine take the food away. I didn't ever enjoy it. I could tell He was rushing me out the door, while everyone else was enjoying their food. When I asked him what is the rush, he goes that is how they do a business here as soon as they think you are done they take away the food and that he heard I sad yes to clearing the table And if I am not happy I should go somewhere else. FYI: I refused to pay because the manager made me look stupid in front of everyone else. John tried to make me look like I'm the bad person. I told him that I am not paying for 20mins of seating by the table and a half ass service I received. If you are serving asian food and making a business out of it, might as well should learn not to discriminate people. read more
I really liked the chewiness and quantity of the noodles. Eggs were also properly soft boiled. If only these ingredients were in a decent pork broth (umami ramen) with tender pork belly. That pork belly was so dreadfully dry I couldn't even finish one of three slices. Soup had a sweetness flavor and no tonkotsu pork flavor. This is the second time I've tried the fried chicken sambal and it is still dry. Sauce is neither bad nor interesting. read more

I was going through my favorite restaurants on Yelp and I realized I haven't left a review for Oiistar yet. THIS PLACE IS MY FAVORITE RAMEN IN CHICAGO. Why? The portion is HUGE and perfect for me. Usually I leave a ramen place still hungry or I ask for more noodles. Oiistar consistently delivers a big bowl of ramen with so many toppings. All the typical fixings come at no extra charge, another positive for me. The flavors are so creative and I sense the Japanese and Korean fusion. If you are a ramen lover and are searching Chicago, Oiistar is a must try. read more

Busy weekday lunch during the holidays. Service was friendly and knowledgeable. We sat at the bar and enjoyed 2 bowls of ramen and a small hot sake. Perfect for the cold weather. I can't remember the names but one of the bowls had beef in it and the other one was the spicy garlic ramen with pork. Looking forward to returning again read more
Absolutely delicious!!!! This would surely be my MUST GO TO spot when I come back to Chicago. This place can get quite busy, waiting times up to 40 minutes, so plan accordingly. I had the shrimp bao, so good, I wanted to have 10 more. Oh, if I lived here, I would have had 10 more. But being on a scheduled visit, I had to limit myself so that I could try other items. The other items, were just as delicious! I thought for around $14, this ramen better be good. It was frigging GREAT! The portion sizes are HUGE, good thing I shared with my Fiance. There was a generous amount of protein and the noodles were in house made, perfect! I wanted to drink all o the broth! We also had the fried chicken, hot fresh crispy and juicy!! I was very pleased and impressed with this place. At home, I have not found a single ramen place that I even came close to liking!! Eating here was a real treat! read more

Great ramen for winter months! Went in wanting to try the tikkamen. Sadly, the tikkamen only comes in pork-based broth and since I don't consume pork, I wasn't able to tell how well the South Asian flavors fused. They were very helpful to switch me over to a non-pork broth, with chicken and all the other additions intact. Great service! The place is pretty crowded and the bar area is even more crowded. Which probably speaks to the quality of food - or just the chaos of the wicker/Logan on a weekend. read more

Overall: Great ramen spot in Wicker Park. Not the best in the city by any means, but certainly steps above many others. The good: Amazing food. The buns are great, and the ramen is delicious. Extremely filling, fantastic broth, hefty and thick noodles, and amazing pork. Service was friendly and knowledgeable. The bad: The prices are a little high, especially if you get more than just ramen. There's not a ton of space either, and the seating isn't exactly comfortable. Absooolutely AMAZING! Hands down, one the best ramen spots in Chicago. We stopped by here after a few drinks on a Saturday night and I am still having dreams of the spicy garlic shoyumen. The portions here are very filling. I usually have no problem finishing a bowl of ramen (and still have room for more) but I felt like they give you an endless amount of noodles here - which is a good thing. The broth was super flavorful & rich. Soft boiled egg was perfectly runny and the pork belly was tasty. Exactly everything I could hope for. Do yourself a favor and check it out! read more

Awesome ramen and baos, and very large portions! Ramen broth was rich and flavorful without being too salty. Most of the ramen options have a bit of a spicy kick but there are a couple of non-spicy choices too. Noodles are housemade, and my ramen came with two generous pieces of melt in your mouth Berkshire pork. The baos are large too, so they are a fork and knife affair, not something you can fold over into a taco/sandwich. The shrimp bao was my favorite, but we also tried the Berkshire pork, 6 hour pork shoulder, and beef/mashed potatoes and all were delicious. The food comes out quickly, and service was great. My tea seemed a little weak in flavor but I'll let that pass. Overall, a great dining experience! read more
This has become my new favorite ramen spot. It's right in my backyard and I've eaten here quite a few times because you get a decent bowl of ramen. Around the city, I feel like the ramen prices have been ticking up and up; approaching $20 with add-ons, etc. But with Oiistar, you get a generous portion with enough to take home. Prices have been pretty consist around $15. I always get the Spicy Garlic Ramen. It's difficult to seat large parties, but if you come in groups of max 4, you'll be seated more comfortably since their seating is pretty compact. If you're dining as a party of 1, there's plenty of seating at the bar and communal bench seating near the entrance. Beyond ramen, their pork belly buns are good as well as their sambal chicken. I've gotten the "Zzajangmen" for take-out a few times and it's perfect for people always on-the-go. Because 1) its delicious and 2) it tastes just as great and fresh as it did when you ordered it after a day or two in the fridge. This noodle dish (no soup) is actually Korean; noodles with a black bean sauce, sort of like a gravy. The Oiistar version has bbq chicken, pork, egg, spinach, and cashew. So good! You mix the noodles, sauce, and ingredients yourself (kind of like the joyous experience of mixing your own burrito bowl). Mix mix mix and then eat! During the summer, there is limited outdoor seating, but it's nice to grab a table outside. Their servers are nice and if you bring a pup with you, they have a stash of dog treats and a water bowl. Try a bowl of ramen or the "zzajangmen" and you'll understand why I keep returning! Among the fierce ramen competition in Wicker Park, Oiistar still stands on its own. read more
Oh my... what oishii ramen you have Oiistar. Did I really just find my next favorite spot to Kizuki for the best tasting tonkotsu ramen in town?? Oiistar had been on my bookmarks for years and it wasn't until recently when a visitor from home came we went together. This dimly lit and long restaurant was bustling on a weeknight and we waited about 20 minutes for a seat. Despite it bring utterly confusing from the outside, they have a good system of texting you when they have a spot ready- table or bar. We sat at the bar and shared a long table with other patrons. The menu had steaming ramen written all over it, and my friend and I each ordered our own bowls. We also ordered an Ebi Tempura Bun ($4) to start and WOW, the crunch and texture of the shrimp along with the softness of the bun was impeccable. Best bun I've had at a ramen shop for sure. I chose the Oiimen Ramen ($14) since it was a classic take on tonkotsu ramen, one of my favorite kinds. This massive bowl of ramen came out very quickly and from first smell, I already knew it was going to be good. The garlic really came alive in the broth, the Berkshire pork belly was phenomenally tender and literally broke off in my mouth, and the thin egg noodles were all on point. Hands down one of the best bowls of ramen I've had in Chicago. Despite the food being so amazing, I have to mark it down one star because of the odd service that we experienced. My friend wasn't able to finish her bowl at all so we asked to have it boxed up to go. A few minutes goes by and we receive our checks and pay, but no food? The server even spoke through another party (since we were sharing the table), and I could imagine myself being annoyed if that was me being interrupted by someone else's problem. Eventually we ended up hunting down a server just to investigate, and managed to get our food after back after ten minutes. Not sure what happened but hopefully it doesn't happen to anyone else. Nonetheless, Oiistar is fantastic and a spot I plan on returning to soon. read more

I'll start off by saying that I HIGHLY recommend this place! For starters, the pork belly..... WHOA! It left me speechless! Probably the best pork belly I've had yet; therefore, if you eat pork, you MUST get it as an appetizer! Also ordered the garlic fried chicken (sambal), which was pretty tasty and made to order! I must admit, the sauce is what makes the chicken! Lastly, the ramen: it was very good, though not great. The spice level could've been higher, and overall, felt like something was missing. Again, it was very good! Overall, the service was great, food was delish, and I'd def go back! read more
Fast, friendly A+ service and GIGANTIC bowls of ramen... but lacking in the flavor department. I swung by here for a late lunch and got the spicy garlic ramen expecting it to pack a punch. Sadly, it looked much tastier than it was. While I did really love the huge portion, wavy noodles, delicious succulent pork, and variety of veggies (including cabbage which was interesting), the broth simply fell flat for me. I didn't even end up eating the leftovers I took home. Major props for that pork though - so succulent and melt in your mouth! I think I'd try another spot next time though. read more
Delicious ramen and bao! My go to is the Oiimen classic. You get your choice of thin or think noodles. The thin noodles are relatively thick so choose accordingly. Perfect on a cold night! The bao buns are a great addition or appetizer. I've tried almost all of them and always have to get some when I get ramen here. Great neighborhood spot and affordable!! read more

Saw this on a list for top 20 ramen places in Chicago and it did not disappoint. It's a cute little place, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. I got the pork belly bun and the bbq beef buns and both were good. My friend liked the pork one better as the meat was very tender but I liked the goki cuz of all the sauces- both good. Got the spicy garlic ramen and the waiter gave us a good tip that none of the ramens are really that spicy (even tho this had 2 chili signs next to it) but I added chili garlic oil and it was perfect. Would def recommend this place. The pork belly is especially tender and flavorful. read more
A rainy fall night calls for one thing and one thing only.. RAMEN. Oiistar is one of our favorite spots in the city! We usually opt for the oiimen classic. The broth is soooo creamy and rich, the pork belly is tender and flavorful and the noodles are cooked to perfection. Huge portions and reasonable price tags. Last night we had leftovers so ordered a side of noodles and pork belly to go and got to enjoy round two for lunch today. Due to covid and the fact that they don't have any outdoor seating options, they have put up barriers between tables to help make guests feel more separated. Service is always polite and efficient. Can't recommend this place enough. read more
