Right now, on my highly curated list of the 25 best BBQ spots in all of Texas, Cattleack sits at #12--so obviously I had to try it, especially because it's literally down the street from my new place. I knew how that line could get, so I pulled up at 10:05 AM . Basically had BBQ for breakfast. And since I plan on hitting ALL 25 spots on my list, I made sure I tasted a little bit of everything so I could give it a proper review. First test: THE RIBS. I'm from St. Louis. Ribs are always going to be one of my first tests of whether somebody can really throw down on the BBQ pit. I got a whole pound, and they were GREAT. Passed the test. Then came the Toddfather sandwich... WHEWWWW. Brisket, smoked sausage AND pulled pork all on one sandwich. My God. So good. To finish off the meat test, I got one big piece of fatty brisket. Excellent. Exactly what I wanted. Now the sides... The mac & cheese was surprisingly GOOD. And if you know Texas BBQ, you know finding a BBQ spot with mac & cheese that can actually hold its own isn't always easy. The burnt-end baked beans had a great smoky flavor, but there were almost TOO many burnt ends in them . I was like damn, can I get some beans too?! Still good though. And finally, the banana pudding? FIRE. It was like a fancy version because it had a toffee flavor to it. Cattleack absolutely delivered. Love the vibes inside and out. This is officially a Ken's Approved Restaurant and earns the KenStar of Approval. 12 down... the journey through Texas BBQ continues.

I read about the long lines and the lack of parking, but when I visited, it was maybe an hour before they closed, so I was actually able to find parking right outside the front door, and there was no line. There were also plenty of seating inside. When I got there, they were out of certain items, but that was expected since they are in high demand. Since it was just me, I ordered half a pound of brisket and half a pound of ribs along with a side of mac and cheese. To be honest, it did not live up to its hype. The brisket was a little dry, and for how much they charge per pound, I was expecting more meat than fat. The ribs were my favorite, and the mac and cheese was ok too. I got my order to go, and they only gave me a few sandwich bread slices and like 2 small containers of pickles. I think next time IF i go and IF i happen to be in the area i will try to eat inside that way I can get more of the bread/pickles because i love those on my BBQ.

Then I accidentally parked in the wrong spot while going to get my nails done, looked up, and saw Hurtado. Clearly, lunch was meant to happen! I ordered the three-meat plate with brisket, ribs, and poblano sausage, plus bacon ranch potato salad, macaroni and cheese, and tater tot casserole. I'll admit, I wondered whether all the extras in the sides might be doing too much. Well, after bringing everything home and digging in, I can say it absolutely worked. The ribs were tender and delicious, with great barbecue flavor. The poblano sausage was amazing! I've had jalapeño cheddar sausage before, but this was something different and so good. The brisket had a wonderful smoky flavor, although it wasn't quite as tender as I expected on my first serving. It had cooled down some by the time I got home, and when I reheated it for round two, it was much more tender. Next time, I'll ask whether I can get a leaner cut, just as a personal preference. Now, the sides deserve their own moment. The bacon ranch potato salad had a finely mashed texture, with delicious bacon and green onions on top. Chef's kiss! The macaroni and cheese had spiral pasta, a little jalapeño heat, and such a creamy, delicious sauce. I've never had any quite like it. The tater tot casserole was another winner. It reminded me a little of Cracker Barrel's hash brown casserole, but with a smoky, bacon-like flavor and a much finer potato texture. My first thought was, "Is this cauliflower?" It wasn't--it was just a different texture than I expected, and oh my goodness, it was good. Even the bread had that sweet, Hawaiian-style taste that I love. I'm picky about barbecue sauce, so I wasn't sure what to expect there either. This one was sweet with a hint of Tex mex flavor and a little something different in the seasoning that worked so well with the barbecue. I loved it. The portions were generous, especially the sides, and my takeout container was full of meat and two slices of bread. Service was quick, too. My food came out about five minutes after I sat down, and they offered me water while I waited. I went in hoping the food would live up to everything I'd heard, and it was even better than I imagined. Everything had its own flavor, and it all came together so well. Now I'm thinking about that meal and already looking forward to going back!

Add to that convenience, they have some really delicious BBQ. As for the BBQ, I have tried quite a bit of their offering over the months and I have zero complaints about anything. If dining in, my go to order tends to be the Texas Trinity which consists brisket, spare ribs, sausage and a side of your choice. This makes for a great meal with perhaps a little leftover to take home for later. If I am getting my food to go, I usually get the El Jefe which includes a 1/3 pound each of brisket, pulled pork, spare ribs, turkey, burnt ends plus sausage. It usually gives me enough to eat for a couple of days. Another great option is The Big Papa Potato which is baked potato stuffed with all the trimming along with some of their brisket. Well I have eaten here twice before even reading the first review. I read a really long bad and a really long good one. So being in the area I wanted to give them another shot and see if I can spot some of the things in the two reviews. I'm a truck driver and I tend to get around. And I may not have the most discerning palate but this is what I think. The service was okay, but the woman behind the counter seemed a little short. The food was okay, if I had to choose between McDonald's and this, they win hands-down. But the food did seem to be missing something from the first two times I went. I had noticed the first two times that they really don't have a selection of drinks that are nonalcoholic. They had Pepsi diet Pepsi and Canada dry. Considering it was out of a can and sitting in a refrigerator you would think they would have other choices. But they had plenty of beer, unfortunately I don't drink and I'm not that fond of Pepsi. I saw what one of the reviews meant about the side's didn't really taste homemade. But I did think the beans were doctored up quite well. The potato salad was really missing something though. I had the chopped brisket. It wasn't dry it was moist enough and heavy on the barbecue sauce. The links were tasty although a little salty. The customers there were really nice and quick to start up conversations. But the one reviewer was right they could do with a bit less chairs due to the space being a bit tight. Other than that I think this is a small business with heart and it looks like the kind of place where the service can go up and down the scale on a daily basis. It really does seem like a small family run operation. I say if you're in the area you should go. It is definitely a one time experience that could grow into a lifelong favorite place. But for now I can just say that it's good. read more

Let me start by saying that this was my first time in Dallas, and therefore my first experience with Dallas barbecue. That being said, I have had and made plenty of barbecue in my life...and this is by far the best I've ever had. We ordered the ribs, brisket, pulled pork sandwiches, Mac n cheese and beans. The ribs were really off the bone, but not in annoying messy way...just the perfect amount of tenderness. Definitely add the bbq sauce on the table--you won't be sorry. The Mac n cheese was not typical but in the best way. It had peppers and was clearly made with bechamel sauce which the owner confirmed was his wife's Louisiana recipe. No wonder I loved it since I'm Haitian and make our very similarly. The brisket was absolute divine--more than I can handle in the small order but good to get if you're sharing. It was seasoned perfectly but adding the sauce from the table gave it a little something extra. Overall great dining experience at a local black owned business with good customer service and a personable owner. I imagine it gets crowded in the evenings so I would go during lunch. read more

Have heard about this place and went for preconcert meal. My buddy and I got there first and waited for the rest of our group. I am guessing the owner came by and visited with us as we waited. We asked what he suggested as the best sellers. Ribs is what they are known for. So group got there and we all ordered. I had two meat combo with ribs and brisket. Both perfect and as the name suggested the meat feel if the bone and was flavor as hell. The brisket was very good as well with the ribbon of fat cooked to there point where it easily separated from the bed. It was very good, maybe a bit dry. That was it may wise for the entire group of us except one had the chicken and she loved it. Sides, I tried the fried corn on cob. Asked b4 if was battered like the old black eyed pea staple but it isn't. It is good, sprinkled with a run or seasoning that is nice but wasn't on entire Cobb leaving some bland. Friends loved okra and slaw. Would of liked a spicier BBQ sauce and sweetners for unsweet tea like Splenda. read more

I review BBQ more than any other foods...This was my first visit and as any good BBQ critic knows you have to try BBQ more than once to give a honest review. This place is small only about 20 seats and that is if you share with someone BBQ was good, average on a scale of one to five its a 3, Ribs were OK, Brisket was OK kinda lean for me...I like greasy fatty brisket with some good to heavy char, I am not a fan of dry lean brisket...I would rather go to McDonalds than eat that. Sides were good...sweet beans (I love me some good baked beans), and the cole slaw was "Money" it is made with Bacon and Blue Cheese...what a great twist. Weird Bread...??? a little expensive...My lunch BBQ Pricing is - under $10 is a good deal, $12 - $13 is OK and over $15 is expensive...this was $16.24 with Drink and Tax I will try it again and report back as for you...go try it, I think you will be happy, most of you will be very happy read more

This place is just okay. Simply put, the BBQ is forgettable - I had the pork ribs, brisket and fried corn. In my opinion, for Texas BBQ they are pretty mediocre. I checked out the place this past Memorial day because I wanted to see if there was any other place doing BBQ better than Lockhart and Pecan Lodge (my favorite joints in Dallas) and my main take aways from 'Off the Bone' are that the customer service was horrible and the food is just okay. I had to wait almost an hour for my order because they forgot to put my ticket in the queue. If you want top notch BBQ and a reasonable level of customer service you are better off going to the other top rated BBQ restaurants in the area. read more

I like that they offer you free hush puppies, or cornbread, which were both very good. I had the Brussel flower au gratin (which I highly recommend), and mac & cheese. Parking could be a little tight so be prepared for that. They also seem to be very busy even on weekdays so I recommend getting there early or after the lunch rush.

The brisket melts in your mouth. The mustard bbq sauce is my personal favorite. Service at the counter is always fast and friendly. Parking can be difficult during rush hours. 2 reasons for the 4 stars - Cleanliness of the cutlery. You have to pick and choose your forks with a lot of dirty ones found in the stand. The water dispenser was not functional on both the visits. Hight time the restaurant addresses these basic requirements. Food is exceptional without doubt.

The one I picked had links, brisket, ribs, and sausage inside a cheesy baked potato. These plates can be eaten by a couple. It was way too much for just me by myself. The bbq was cooked well overall and the rest was just overkill but you'll definitely get full. The average pricing was around $20+ to start so be prepared to pay for the food. They also have koolaid, it's extremely sugary if you're not big on that type of taste. Service was simple and straight forward and the location is more of a shack with some decorations of their old sports teams and a tank with a turtle in it.

Oh smokey, meaty gods of unctuous morsels, thank you for Mr. Dave and his BBQ…read more I will lend this tasty BBQ to a cross between Texas and KC BBQ. The ribs are done very well with a good amount of smoke put on them; even if the ends lacked some juiciness the flavor made more than up for them being a bit tough. The spicy sausage I also ordered only to find out after sampling some from my box (awaiting coworkers) is made IN HOUSE with Mr. Dave's recipe!! Spicy juicy and extremely tasty! The sauce appears and from the taste lends itself to a thicker, ketchup and molasses based sauce with some kick and a solid shot of black pepper. I liked it quite a bit and even dipped the dryer rib portions in. This is where I think when I heat these up I will baste on some sauce and hit them in the broiler to put some wet / glaze into them. We all enjoyed our selections and I've been told by coworkers the potato salad is spot on, but the greens were flat. All in all not enough to take a point. It's BBQ, not a side factory. ;)
