Friends from out of town came in so when in Dallas BBQ is the place. When you drive up, know that it's located in an awkward location and parking is more available on one side. As you walk out of your car, THE SMELL, is there (NOTE: You know you're gonna smell like the place when you leave). When placing the order, you walk to the counter to order. The menu basic but we ordered 2 racks of ribs 1.5 pounds of brisket, some sides and drinks. They have 4 TV's for your viewing pleasure and there is one bathroom in the middle. The order was brought to us with wheat bread. The ribs and brisket had that rich smoke taste. The ribs had the caramelized rub on the outside and they were cut different than the regular spread ribs. The cook saw our order and recommended the family pack but we stayed with the regular cuts. The final was $146 bucks but the portions were small for our group. We had some pecan pie and peach cobbler but it tasted mass produced. This was a good place and good customer service. This is a solid 3.5, but I'll round up because of the awesome bleu cheese coleslaw, but then I have to round it back down because of the price. I decided to take one for the Yelp team today and trek out the 1.5 miles from my office to OTB in order to make a definitive statement on the best BBQ around downtown thread. If you like your 'cue sloppy, I think you'll like OTB more than I did. The food was good, but I have mad love for dry rub ribs and an unhealthy lust for the crackling, fatty crunch of a good crusty brisket. At OTB, much like the pants of an 80 year old man, it's all soft baby. The ribs were literally fall off the bone tender. They were short and meaty, but lacked the depth of flavor that I enjoy in a rib. I just had the wang, dang, sweet twang of their BBQ sauce. If you like your beef sliced, you're shit out of luck. It's all chopped here. Twangy again, but no better than what I make in my crock pot at the house. Again, this isn't BAD 'cue, it just doesn't give me a Barbecue Boner (TM). Off the Bone is off the hook! Upon entering Off the Bone Barbeque, the friendly guy at the register offered me a free baby back rib and promised me it's the best I have never had. It certainly was and I ordered a whole rack of them. Delicious. More on that later. That sort of marketing trick is the equivalent of me walking up to a girl at a bar, pulling my pants down, and well, I'm going to continue writing about the food before I sound creepier than I usually do in my reviews. Anyway, this is the best barbeque I have ever had. How did I end up eating at this gem? Well, I sell mugs, which is another (tragic) story altogether. But I was at a conference, and I walked by an older, African-American janitor. He smiles, looks me up and down, and we start talking. Janitor: Hey! Now those are some nice shoes, brother. Me: Thank you. My dad always says, "A girl won't think about marrying a guy if he has bad shoes." And I know where I'm eating dinner tonight, brother. And that's how I ended up here. Unlike most barbeque joints that use hickory or mesquite wood, Off the Bone uses pecan wood. It gives the meat a unique slightly sweet, fruity flavor with a hint of smoke. Top that off with their spicy BBQ sauce, and what you get is amazing ribs, brisket, and chicken. The sides are good too. This little joint has a really nice staff, and really great food. It must be a crime to serve food that good at those prices. Maybe that's why the police station is across the street? Meat!! One thing I love about having moved to the south- BBQ in all its smokey glory.. I have had this bad boy bookmarked for a hot minute now.. why haven't I stopped in to eat until today??!! We pulled up and the place almost looked like it was closed- its not very well lit at night and can easily be passed up if you don't know where to look- but you can't escape the delightful smokey aroma that engulfs the tiny building. When you walk in there is a dining room that is one step down from the bar you order at with a tiny open kitchen behind it and a pantry to the right of that. We both opted for the two mean combos that comes with two sides and bread and of course i made him get something different so i could taste it :) Let me say- I am not a BBQ sauce fan.. never have been- more than likely wont ever be mostly because it is way too sweet for me.. but I am so glad I didn't know the meat some slathered in the their "family recipe" sauce. It was tangy with just a hint of kick. i dug into the roasted chicken, sliced brisket and dove head first into the charro beans (so good I wanted another serving- willing to give up finishing the meat) and spicy fries. **Delicious Alert** dip the spicy fries into the charro beans! In between bites i managed to steal a taste of the pulled pork, ribs, potato salad and baked beans- everything was great. about halfway through our meal one of the owners, Ricky, trotted over to refill our drinks- they have sweet tea and homemade lemonade- and we chatted. I asked how busy they got since their Yelp page said they were open till 2am- and he mentioned they closed much earlier than that. When he came back with our drinks i showed him the page and explained i could fix the times if he would have a seat and give me the correct times ( the lobby closes earlier some nights but carry out is still available). He thanked me for fixing the times and let us finish our meals. as we were walking out with our leftovers in tow we waved good bye to all the guys in the kitchen and one of them chased us down on the way to the car with some free lemon pound cake as a thank you for fixing the hours for them. With few tables and small menu, what's BIG here is the flavor. What they do, they do very well. My friend and I shared half a pound of sliced brisket, an order of smoked pecan baby back ribs and 8 oz of 3 meat charro beans. It was was extremely delicious. The meats were smoky, well spiced and perfectly tender. It's a close call between the ribs and the brisket and I simply can't pick one over the other. Both are an absolute must. Um, wow. I was slightly afraid of taking a group of friends to dinner at an unknown and untested restaurant on South Lamar, but as usual, trusting all you Yelpers didn't let me down. This place is fantastic. First of all, they could tell we were first-timers, and the next thing we knew, they were sliding samples of their ribs across the counter. Oh my. They were divine. Meat fell right off the bone, and the sauce is fantastic. I ended up sticking with my traditional BBQ order (chopped beef sandwich), but those ribs...mmm. Tempting. A friend of mine got his chopped beef sandwich order before mine came out, and for a moment I was terrified. "Um, did you order two sandwiches?" Nope. Order one, get two. Oh dear. Sure, the buns are small, but together, they're definitely bigger than your average BBQ sandwich. Wow. Lovin' it. I wish the entrees came with sides, but our group bought a few pints to share, and that worked out nicely. The potato salad is yummy, but pretty standard. The beans are delicious and less standard. There's definitely a signature flavor there. The cole slaw...talk about signature! It's got bell peppers and blue cheese. Whaaaat? Honestly, I wasn't a huge fan (I like my cole slaw boring and traditional), but one of my friends called it "the best cole slaw I've ever had." So there are two opinions, and you can taste it and decide for yourself. We ate on the patio (the only dine-in option -- so either go when the weather's good, or get takeout). Yeah, it's not the most scenic patio in Dallas (hello pipes and warehouses), but it's not bad, and with the addition of 4 policemen who drove up to grab some dinner, I felt pretty darn safe. Plus, all the employees who work here are super friendly (did I mention the free samples?), and the LCD screens for the menu make it very non-sketchy. Probably not a place I'd tell my mom to check out with her girlfriends, but a place my dad would love for lunch and my friends DID love for dinner. You get the picture? As my plane was stuck on the tarmac at DFW, I kept looking at my watch. 11:31p....11:48p.....12:04a......The slow person in front of me at the Hertz didn't help either. When I finally got to the counter the first thing I asked for was my Garmin and entered in "1734 South Lamar St" which led me to the promise land. Having no clue where this place was, it was the start of my BBQ adventure and an amazing place to begin in the wee hours of the morning. Service was very friendly and my meal was delivered just as quick; an order of ribs and order of the chopped brisket. The smell immediately engulfed my car as I drove back across town to my hotel. Even checking in the smell started to take over the lobby when someone at the hotel asked where I just visited. "Off The Bone" was my reply and they nodded and smiled; good sign from a local who knows his stuff. Forget unpacking or calling the Mrs to let her know I arrived as I was about to enjoy some of the most amazing BBQ. The ribs were perfect without too much fat and just the right amount of sauce. While I prefer my brisket sliced, the chopped was better than I expected. In a little over 40 minutes, there was nothing left but the wonderful aroma. I didn't have a chance to make it back before I left but next time I'm in Dallas, will once again be the first stop! read more

As we were driving along Lamar street we were completely confused as to where we were going as the surrounding area was predominately industrial. Warehouses were the common theme, but as we got closer we saw a small little building sort of on it's own island. It definitely sticks out, but the real question is - how's the BBQ? My boyfriend and I decided on a 2 meat, 2 side combo plus a fried corn on the cob (as it was featured on a local newspaper). Pork ribs came highly recommended as did the brisket. We were even given the option of having sliced of chopped brisket and opted for the later. For our sides we decided on the honey baked beans and potatoe salad. Everything was amazing and I couldn't' stop stuffing my mouth - the sweet and saltyness of the beans, and pork ribs that just fell off the bone, mMm Mmmm mmm... This is definitely how BBQ should be done. It was one of my favorite places on my Dallas trip and if you want a great meal for a reasonable price you should definitely check this out! read more

This spot is tiny but not hard to miss and conveniently located right by the huge ass Dallas Police Department building. You know them cops are grubbin' it up here everyday. I know I would! I got myself the 1 meat and 2 sides combo: Brisket with Honey Spiced Baked Beans and Summer Cool Coleslaw. And of course one of their Southern Country Peach Cobbler that they had stacked near the register. The staff here seem like they could all be family members. They all work quite efficiently. So, you order your food and you walk across through the glass door where the seating area is and wait for your food there. They also have moist towelette dispensers and antibacterial hand sanitizer bottles out for your messy, finger-lickin' eaters. :P When my plate came out...oh boy. I dug right into my brisket and it was the most flavorful meat I've had in awhile. The coleslaw is apparently popular during the summer time but I honestly could live without that side dish, it had a hint of something that I didn't quite like. The baked beans though...oh man! I should have ordered 2 sides of just that! Wow, the spicy flavor on those beans was heavenly. And the pieces of bread they give you to sop up any sauce you have on your plate is a great bonus too. Ended my meal by digging into the yummy peach cobbler. The peaches were light, fresh and crisp and the cobbler part of the dessert was not too dense and honestly made my meal 110% complete. A most excellent BBQ joint south of downtown Dallas on Lamar. Tried the baby back ribs, brisket, potato salad and charo beans. Oh and of course an ice cold beer. This place has a kick ass sauce on the table that tastes awesome, and the smoked meat is so delicious it doesn't need it. The ribs were slightly sweet, tangy and smoked to perfection. The lean brisket had a perfect smoke ring however was just a tad dry. Potato salad is made southern style with yellow mustard and dill relish. The charo beans is a perfect entrée by themselves! I had the BBQ Beef Rib with a side of BBQ horseradish sauce. It was excellent. This place has a cool, fresh vibe, and the folks running it are very friendly and patient. You can imagine the analysis paralysis when staring at their menu cursing the fact that you can probably only consume 2-3lbs of food without needing an intervention... Tucked away in a not-so-delightful part of Dallas is an utterly delightful, family-run BBQ spot. The fact that I chose this place as my last "official meal" in Dallas before moving was no mistake: I just had a feeling this place would be good, and boy was I right. You just know a restaurant is pretty fantastic when you walk away thinking more about the people who run it than the food itself. And, the food was bombass. Off the Bone is known for tender, delicious, flavorful, pecan-smoked pork ribs. Stick with that and the crispy-skinned sausage and you will not be disappointed. Their sides have a nice unique twist though. The coleslaw is made with bell peppers, cabbage, bleu cheese, and chunks of bacon on top. Not for the average coleslaw lover, but I really enjoyed it. Kind of a twist on those classic wedge salads you get at old-school steak houses. The beans were spicy and sweet, and the potato salad was pretty much average. There's no place to sit inside, so brave the Texas heat and cower under the shade at the teeny tiny porch out front. This place brings a lot of dudes during lunch hour, and I bet their fair share of cops, too. And, I'll just say the Harvey family who runs the place are as sweet as their tea. They were happy to show us their pit and their pecan logs for smoking meat when I told them I'd heard their praises through Yelp. They even asked to be my Facebook friend! (Made me feel all special inside.) I can't wait to bring my pops here for some Southern hospitality and damn good smoked meat. read more

5 stars on the baby back ribs! The sides were just okay. Also, they only have one sauce option and it is sweet. Since they are a BBQ place, it would be good if they had a few sauces to cater to different appetites. They provided me with some spicy salsa verde to mix with the sauce to make it more spicy. We're staying in Downtown Dallas for the weekend, and we decided to go out for a nice dinner. We found this place on Yelp and decided to walk there. All I can say is...holy crap. When we walked in, we were greeted by two jubilant men who were extremely friendly, and hilarious. They gave us a free sample of a whole piece of the smoked pecan babyback ribs, on the bone. First of all, this was the biggest sample I've ever been given from anywhere. Second of all, it was the most delicious rib I've ever had. I hardly even had to bite into it; it fell apart on contact with my teeth. And on top of that, the flavor was fantastic, and didn't taste much like pecans at all. When I placed my order, I asked for the combo with one choice of meat and two sides. I had the smoked pecan babyback ribs with potato salad and tri-colored pasta, and came out having paid $11.95 for a meal that left me waddling, but satisfied. It doesn't look like much, but it's quite a sizable amount of food. I tried bits of my friend's brisket, and I've gotta say, that was such a fantastic brisket. It fell apart easily, as the ribs did, and it wasn't one bit chewy. It was the perfect cut of meat. And as far as the sides go, the tri-colored pasta was alright, but not for me. The potato salad was incredibly flavorful. And from what my friend told me, the cole slaw was very fresh and put together with care. Overall, if you're in the area, I highly suggest stopping by this eatery. Not only will you be pleased with the quality of the employees, but you'll also be left wanting to come back again and again. Is it the ritz and glamor of Dallas? No, but don't let that deter you. Off the Bone has local flavor and a dedicated clientele who scoff in the face of Pecan Lodge's long lines. Service is lightning fast, friendly, and the environment is warm and comfortable. Star Granted. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? You know what? It ain't cheap, and it'll never be cheap. It's barbecue, and good barbecue comes at a premium these days. For $15.86 I landed a half rack of ribs and a side order of beans. You can throw anything in a slow cooker for five or six hours and it'll fall off the bone, and that method comes about at the expense of flavor. That's exactly what happened here. These are good ribs, but they don't have the 'pop' that Pecan Lodge has or the smokey aftertaste that comes about from a proper setup. Again, they're good, but there are better in the city. Single Star Granted. Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could? There's no doubt that it's good, and while the atmosphere isn't that of Lockhart, I actually liked the food better than at Lockhart. The presentation of the potato salad was nice with the right amount of mustard that gave it the perfect tint of yellow. I did have to add a tiny bit of pink sea salt to my potato salad to enhance the flavor, but other than that it was still tasty. The complimentary dinner roll was aight.. kind of hard. Spacious parking lot, but not many tables inside. Order at the counter. Whole smoked chicken is around $10 including one side, which is about a cup in measurement. They sell beer and soda as drinks. Each order comes with some bread, and though I never end up eating the bread, the bread here looked good - appeared to have some whole grains in it instead of the usual square white bread slices. The chicken was good, about on par with the whole foods smoked chicken. The skin wasn't too jiggly, and my chicken-skin-loving friend gobbled it down like it was the cat's meow. If I lived nearby (Southside on Lamar), I'd definitely be over here a lot getting chicken, but it's a bit far to go for it otherwise for me. The BBQ sauce on the tables was however, delicious, and that may lure me back for another round or two. The service was friendly and relatively fast. Had some seriously good ribs and brisket here. I was a little ticked at first because I had been sitting and they only gave me a fork and no knife. Guess what kids? No knife needed. That's right. Fall off the bone perfection. The brisket was very tender on the inside and crispy on the outside with a solid rub to give it a nice spice. I also had a side of the 3 meat beans which had a serious kick to them. The people who work here were very nice as well. They even respected the fact that I was an idiot and called ahead to see if they had tables open for one. The place was practically empty but I couldn't for the life of me understand why. I thought it was going to be a nice restaurant, but I rolled up to a dive. My ignorance did not stop me from enjoying my time here. I stopped by here on a recent trip to Dallas to catch a football game. I live in California, so this was my first time experiencing some real authentic Texas barbeque. I never order barbeque in California because everything is over-marinated with poor meat quality. This however, was the opposite. This was the least messiest barbeque I've ever experienced, as well as the best tasting. The atmosphere was very quaint and welcoming. You step into the kitchen to make your order then grab a seat in the main room, which seems like an extension from the original building. The two men working the kitchen were very welcoming to us! When we mentioned it was our first time in Dallas, they were more than happy to give us some sample ribs. I was sold from that point on. I ordered two rib tacos. These tacos are only $2 each, and they are filled up with lots of meat! Probably two ribs worth. Definitely a great deal and great taste. It had a nice kick but wasn't too spicy. My friends ordred ribs and brisket, and everything was tender and juicy. I probably won't be back in Dallas for years, but if I do, I'll definitely be giving this place another visit. read more

My boyfriend and I visited Dallas from Washington DC and delicious BBQ was on our bucket list while there. This place came highly recommended to us by residents we asked. The place is not fancy and doesn't seem to be in the best part of the city so have low expectations for ambiance however if you want delicious BBQ and paper napkins this is the place to go. We had the brisket, potato salad and spicy fries. I'd fly back to Dallas to eat this meal again. Pure food bliss. read more

I had a great experience here. The moment I walked in I got good vibes from everyone working here. The place is super clean and all the employees are friendly and sincere. I ordered a half rack of ribs, coleslaw and honey baked beans. The moment I took my first bite out of the rib, I knew this was something special. It really is "off the bone" and the type of food you eat slowly to savor every bite. I rarely have that feeling anymore. It's in a safe neighborhood as well; right next to a police station. It's regularly recommended as one of the best bbq houses in Dallas, and though I haven't eaten at every bbq place in the city, it's hard to believe that it gets any better than this. read more

First meal in Dallas and I turn to yelp. Thanks guys! First impression: you might feel like you've driven too far into a sketch area of town for good food but rest assured you've driven just far enough! The BBq was terrific. Lots of good choices. Brisket was great, chopped chicken was amazingly moist and the SIDES! Here's where so many places fall apart imo, but this place did NOT! The best was the blue cheese coke slaw (omg!) but we also liked the fried okra and the fried corn (yum!!) the Mac n cheese was good. The tea was sadly instant but they had good beer choices and a fountain drink (Pepsi). I'd have taken a star for the tea if the BBq hadn't been so great. Check it out-it's worth the drive. The line was long but moved quick and there was a decent amount of seating inside and out. read more

Have been looking for that famous bbq the south is known for and this is definitely where you find it. The brisket is DELICIOUS, melts in your mouth. The Mac n cheese is soo tasty, the fries are 10/10, the sweet honey bbq beans are literally to die for, and lastly GET the deep fried corn(!) crunchy, seasoned perfectly with a hint of lime.
