I'm glad we had the omelette first. Honestly the soufflé would have been good for 2 people and it was very good. I will order it again. It's a blast to the past at this tiny diner, but be willing to wait at least 30-40 minutes for a table even with the added outdoor seating. The staff is very friendly but they could use a few more hands on deck. It's very clean and the menu has a great selection to choose from. My four year old granddaughter gave a thumbs up for the pancake soufflé and a double mmmm rating on the hot chocolate which was huge. Eggs and bacon were cooked to perfection. Stopped by one of our fav dining establishments without a reservation. Joined the waitlist, within 5 minutes, we were seated. Jessie greeting us and served our Breakfast. I ordered the 2 eggs, chicken Apple sausage, country home potatoes. My handsome hubby had crispy bacon, 2 eggs and country home potatoes. The potatoes were cooked to perfection with slivers yellow onions. Breakfast came out fairly quickly as they were quite busy. The morning vibe with other diners were positive with snippets of smaller dogs seated with their dog families that were well behaved outdoors. So many diners have glutinous pancakes that stick to the roof of your mouth. Not Oceanview. These were fluffy and substantial, that magical combo. I think they have upped their maple syrup game since I last went over a year ago - two little tins instead of one - so I didn't need to order extra syrup. Coffee was hot and strong. The butter wasn't frozen solid. The sign-up is via iPad, and it was an efficient system with accurate time estimates. I was resigned to getting a counter seat, but instead got a corner seat at a table that gave me a view of the whole place. Been here twice. I always get spectacular service from Jessie. Everyone here works their booty off! They all deserve a raise lol. The aesthetics is quaint and definitely gives that diner feel that I like. We've been coming to Oceanview Diner (Bette's) for almost a decade. Ever since the change in ownership we sadly, rarely come here anymore. The service and food have not been the same :( which makes me very sad because this was my favorite breakfast spot. We gave it another chance today after months of not coming and again food was not up to par and it took 30+ minutes just to get our food. In the 30+ minutes we waited for our food and even after receiving our food, no one ever came to check in. It took a while just to get someone's attention so I can get the check. Mom and daughter morning of getting hair done followed by brunch. We walked over to Bette's Oceanview Diner for a bite. They had plentiful outdoor seating with lots of shade, and cool, diner style, indoor seating. We ate indoors today. My daughter had a waffle with fruit and I had the smoked salmon scramble with black beans vs potatoes. My daughter was a little disappointed in the waffle. We were expecting a fluffy, thick waffle and instead received a flat one. Taste was good, could have had more fruit, but looked like a grated pancake. Maybe the flour choice? The black beans were perfectly cooked and seasoned, lot if salmon bits in the creamy scramble and a nicely toasted bagel, with plenty if cream cheese. It was a good breakfast, overall. read more

A great classic local diner! Even on a weekend, we were able to get a seat within 15mins because they were so efficient. The menu is full of all your diner favorites including omlettes, breakfast combos, pancakes, and sandwiches. I ordered the French Toast. I was thrilled to see the bread was challah, which was very fluffy and extra flavorful. On top they sprinkled a small amount of powdered sugar and melted butter, giving it a nice smooth and sweet bite. They give you a very small cup of fresh maple syrup on the side. I wish they gave you more because it barely covered half my slices of toast, and I didn't want to pay the extra $1.50 for more. If I were to choose again, I'd get the Deluxe French Toast with the fresh fruit and put it on top to give it more freshness and not as dry. It just seemed expensive to be $17 for french toast, fruit and yogurt so I didn't order it this time since the toast alone was $13.50. The good thing is, the 4 slices of toast are very filling. LOVE this diner!! Not gonna lie came here solely for the soufflé pancake and it did not disappoint. I ordered the chocolate swirl flavor because my bf didn't like their seasonal fruit (peaches) although it's the most popular. Upon ordering the waitress said the wait is 40 min for the soufflé but it was worth every minute. Warm, fluffy, the perfect amount of sweetness and such a generous portion. I feel terrible I didn't get any of the staff's names but let me tell you from the moment I was greeted by the host the vibe was spectacular. All the staff was extremely friendly and you could tell they took pride in every bit of their work. That right there could be the whole reason for the 5 star review but on to the food! I ordered a double shot iced americano and it was spectacular flavor was bold and a perfect compliment to my meal. I originally came in because I was craving a waffle but after seeing the potato pancake on the menu I couldn't resist. It was crispy on the outside and soft in the middle, topped with apple sauce and cream top notch! I also ordered the huevos ranchero and enjoyed the flavor down to the last bite! I went solo dolo on a Sunday around noon so probably after their initial morning rush but was still a packed house. My wait was maybe 15 minutes at most which wasn't bad at all. I sat at the diner counter which was a nice touch. They have standard indoor booths and outdoor tables. At check in they allow you to request either one or whichever is available first. 1000% will be returning here, still have to try that waffle after all! read more

Diner's are always a good call and Oceanview is prob one of the best there is. The food is hearty, warm, and so delicious. I came here with a fairly large party to celebrate a birthday and the staff were sooo accommodating and kind. Carlos was our server and he was phenomenal. Basically my entire table and I ordered the same thing lol but a slightly different variation of it. We all got a drink, I had the kir royale which is essentially champagne with cranberry liquor. It was tasty and not too sweet. I also got the California breakfast but don't eat ham so they let me sub it for lox! It was super yummy this way, especially with the lemon butter sauce. Everyone who works here is committed to making diner food at the most elevated level I've ever had. The cozy retro atmosphere of the building makes it easy for you to miss the fact that this isn't just a breakfast spot, this is clearly a team of people with (maybe?) michelin experience engineering a love letter to the period the building was built as a diner menu. Nothing on the menu feels like an afterthought, everything feels meticulously planned as a whole. They are consistent in quality every single time. Not a big fan of this place especially after the waitstaff were unwilling to allow me to order slightly off-menu. What I really wanted was their eggs with bacon and toast, substituting French toast for the toast portion (I would have been happy to pay extra, but they wouldn't even consider it!). That wouldn't have been so bad, but they asked us to leave immediately after finishing our breakfast (mid-conversation) because others were waiting. Oceanview Diner is my favorite breakfast spot in Berkeley and perhaps all of the Bay Area. It has a cozy, old-school vibe which I adore and think is hard to find nowadays. While the portions are smaller than your average brunch place, I think the dishes are well worth the price. Simple things like house potatoes and caramelized onions are cooked to perfection and the ingredients used are high-quality and fresh. My boyfriend and I greatly enjoyed their seasonal vegetable omelette and strawberry soufflé pancake. I usually hate omelettes because the eggs feel so rubbery when cooked this way, but I actually loved this dish. The pancake is also not sweet on its own so you can taste it to your liking with maple syrup. Service was awesome, quick and efficient. For drinks, we each got a decaf almond milk latte. They're served in large glasses and are so comforting especially on cold days! We each ordered an herb and cheese omelette with sourdough bread, as well as a stack of buttermilk pancakes to share. Their omelettes are French style and my absolute favorite! They're so light, fluffy, and flavorful. And of course, the potatoes with onions are perfectly crispy and go so well with the eggs. The pancakes are always good, super thick and fluffy and drowned in maple syrup. Overall, this is definitely my go-to breakfast place and I love their omelettes!
