Finally decided to try it out on 12/26/2019 and the experience was frightening to say the least. The service was slow and the food was partially inedible. It was during Hot August nights and between the classic cars and Sushi I was able to indulge myself with two of my passions. I was seated at the Sushi bar with Wen, a great Sushi chef.. I can't name everything that I ate but everything was fantastic.. I prefer hand rolls and I ate about 8 to ten and I left thinking about how much I enjoyed everything.. I like the decor and it was a fun time for me . My server wasn't a favorite but I won't knock off any stars just because of him.. Had a early dinner here. Started with lobster bisk. Was perfect !!! Seared scallops for a appetizer. Great flavor. For main course Alaskan crab legs. Soooooooo delicious . Service was very good. They had some kind of decal on the table directing you to a webb site for the menu. Couldn't get it right. My waiter saw that I was having trouble, an immediately brought over a real !!! menu. We had our 46 anniversary & a birthday celebration at Oceano sept 9th. Hannah was our server. It was a really busy evening tables full. The food was great as always but the reason we go there is our server Hannah. The Oceano is a really great place for lunch! They have a special lunch menu with great prices on great items. One of my absolute favorites is the half Pacifica sandwich with the half shrimp pan roast. DELICIOUS. By itself, the pan roast (as large as the bowl is) is just too rich and too much food, but the bowl and the half sandwich and fries is absolute heaven. Plus it's like $12 for lunch! Not to mention The Oceano has the Players Card perk with 20% off for locals, DAILY! Can't beat that. I used to think their sushi was okay (again I like the cooked rolls) and I would still say it's 3.5-4 stars for us cooked roll lovers. My favorite roll is the baked eruption with baked mayo, scallops, and macadamia nuts. It's delicious. I usually ask for the jalepeno sauce too, I don't think it's on the menu but it's literal perfection. Highly recommend. read more

ceano, you've been chopped! We went for our anniversary but it's not that kind of place. We made reservations on-line which were easy and accurate and comes with a few text messages to remind you. All good. We'd never seen the restaurant before last night so our mistaken impressions about the place are all us. We "thought" this would be semi up-scale dining but it's casual; like wear your shorts and t shirts casual. A few people (like us) were dressed up and there was one pair out on a first or second date; she's dressed to the 9s, hair done, diamond earrings, make up on point and nails did. He's wearing a t-shirt and looks like he just got back from a run. (I hope he's not too thirsty, cuz I think he's drinking alone tonight.) Anyway, this is a wide open dining area, nothing secluded for romance. We'd seen the menu before coming so we new what we wanted. Once seated, a variety of staff came by with water, menus, cocktail requests, BREAD, etc but not the designated babysitter for orders. When she finally came, we loaded her up with our order (calamari, lobster bisque, diver scallops for the bride, and pan seared halibut for the groom). Then we ate some BREAD. (good bread, warm with sweet butter). Calamari came out quickly and was served with an Asian vinaigrette (kinda of like nuoc mam) dipping sauce Very good. An theeeen, we lost traction...our came the lobster bisque (which is supposed to be highly regarded). The bisque was flat, no depth, very thick with cream and devoid of identifiable lobster pieces or flavor. Soup was the consistency of pancake batter and not hot enough to keep a thick skin from forming between spoonfuls. Four scoops was enough for us, but there was BREAD! and it was good. Staff came by and asked if we didn't like the soup and offered Manhattan clam chowder as a replacement; nice of them. But no depth or lots of clams in this and so after a few tastes, we waited for the main course. I began to get nervous since it was obvious by now that the seafood had defected or were so few in numbers that they couldn't represent at our table. Main courses arrived and looked very nice. Large piece of halibut for me and four scallops on a bed of pasta for the lady. Of course we sampled the scallops first; who wouldn't? They were nicely done, slight crust but not cooked too much so as to be rubbery. Nice delicate flavor and SAND. Yup gritty SAND and enough to make you worry about your dental work. Our scallops had obviously decided to avoid taking the required bath before they were cooked. Moving on to the pasta, we should have just kept moving on. The noodles were over done and not rinsed sufficiently so they stuck to each other like starch things do. Within minutes they had congealed into a pasta brick and so....we passed and had some BREAD! Turning to my halibut, the fish was slightly overcooked and had that rubbery texture on the edges but oddly had no golden sear from the pan. We both took a taste and in unison (cuz that's how we roll) said "Ewww." The fish had been abused! Whatever the seasoning used, there was too much of it and it tasted strongly of cumin, like it was sprinkled on it as it left the kitchen. Four bites (two each) and it was time for BREAD! We said our prayers for the abused fish and said goodbye to the plates. The place was busy and so staff were busy also. Attention was hit or miss and although the wait staff asked about us not doing damage to the main courses, it was perfunctory as it was apparent through her body language that we were being "difficult." We shed some tears for abused halibut and ate some BREAD while waiting for the check. I don't like punishing staff for poor management decisions but neither will I reward staff for a job they didn't do. Our server left a dirty napkin on the table for the entire dinner never offered us more BREAD! She was tipped a fair percentage of the $80 bill and we departed. Sadly, Oceanos is billed as one of the best seafood restaurants in Reno. Considering we don't have a coastline. I know, shocking but true), it's understandable that ingredients are shipped in, probably frozen. But much of what was served to us tasted like it came straight off the Sysco truck. Having said all this, we'd probably stop by for lunch of fish and chips (if it's cod/scrod and it comes with BREAD). I know this review is long, but let us all join hands, bow our heads, and offer a moment of sad reflection for the halibut which would have been delicious had it been LIGHTLY seasoned and seared without all the "stuff" on it and for gawds sakes Chef, wash the scallops! We must also celebrate the escape of the lobsters who evaded the bisque and are probably living in Costa Rica now. Two stars; one for the venue and one the BREAD! P.S. (Written by my husband) I've been wanting to try this place for awhile but left disappointed. Dinner started off great with a discussion with our server on what to order and her recommendations. She was very friendly and was great. We told our server our daughter was a picky eater and asked if we could have the sauce on the side for the Chilean sea bass. She said that's no problem. The manager dropped off the food when it was ready (sea bass was covered in sauce), and we told her we had asked for the sauce on the side since our daughter would not eat it otherwise. She asked if we want to have them take the dish back and have them remove the sauce. Although the sauce was already soaked into the fish, we said to give it a shot since she said it would take longer to remake it. It's just not a response we would ever expect from a nicer establishment, especially given how pricey their dishes are. Most places would apologize and rush to remake the entree, but anyways, that's not even the issue we were upset about. When she finally brought the sea bass back, everything seemed fine (they appeared to have remade it), except that she told us "next time, just ask for no sauce". Wow, blaming us for a mistake that they had made. It didn't register to me until she left and I asked my wife if I had heard wrong. Just a disappointing experience overall. Definitely a fan of Oceano! I was taken here for dinner while on my job interview and ordered the salmon with couscous and veggies. It was yummy! The bread is good, but try not to fill up on it! Tea service was very nice. I've gone back once since moving to Reno. This time, we had some sushi and the soup and salad combo, and we got free drinks for checking in on Yelp! Awesome! Our waitress was lovely, too, and told us about the free drinks (even though we already knew). Yes, it's inside the Peppermill, so the decor is a bit cheesy. But, the restaurant is close to the entrance, so you don't have to go far inside the casino to get to the restaurant. Overall, a very pleasant experience, and I'm sure we'll be back for more! read more

(beforehand) Dec 2022 We were essentially stranded in Reno Nevada due to heavy snow and no way back to California , it was on the aftermath of a big birthday party, debauchery, heavy drinking, reckless gambling and dancing , people breaking their cellphones (plural) , red wine stains on elegant evening gowns, and all the rest of it. Somehow as involuntary (i.e least unsober) captain of our dinner party I managed to corral the group into Oceano about 8pm on a Saturday night at the Peppermill. They did a great job of accommodating us, and provided some excellent seafood offerings and table service. It's a big place; the brigade of cooking staff is in the center of the dining area with the waitstaff on point. The changing holograms on the walls around is an experience. In my afterthoughts, I am grateful that no one was too out of line or obnoxious in our party to make a scene or otherwise. Heavy Tipping was good, and the sushi was excellent. Everyone made it back to California the next afternoon, a 5 hours drive from Reno to Sacramento, restored although with possibly blackout spots in their memories to Oceano, and likely Reno itself. The sushi was AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING - NOT like a buffet - HIGH END. But our server SUCKED - we had a lot of the meal comped because he was so incompetent. I'm glad we didn't have to pay for the experience because everything about it other than the service was at best mediocre. We were seated directly opposite the sushi bar. Very unpleasant. To be honest, the pics of this place are much nicer than the place itself. I asked for another table and was promptly and graciously accommodated. The food was ok. I had the fish and chips. There were 4 pieces that were heavily battered and inconsistent. My friend had soup and some sort of open tacos. The presentation was not appealing at all. On June 25th at 9pm not even busy.serving only one table US!, the server Sal Is Horrible, My girl ordered AYCE sushi and he said he would be right back with the soup. Came by with the little sushi order form, still no soup. He came back for the sushi order and asked if i wanted soup... good thing we wrote it on the form. My girl wasn't offered ice cream after we were done. We didn't get the hot towels after our meal. We know he knows us because we are locals and eat there all the time. He is the only server that is inconsistent. He probably doesn't care for us, as we don't care for him. We forgot to request a different server. We stuck with him because we were starving and was already seated. This is the 3rd or 4th time he served us since our 1st bad experience with him. We believe in 2nd and possible 3rd chances. We gave him the benefit of doubt. It was his choice not to provide service Peppermill upholds to. So, this resulted with us not giving him a tip. I was actually surprised with how tasty my meal was! Visiting Reno twice a month for work I've come to enjoy staying at The Peppermill, this however was my first time eating at Oceano. After a 5 minute wait I was seated at the sushi bar and asked if I wanted to do the all you can eat sushi. I'm all about sushi but something about sushi in Reno with the "all you can eat" slogan behind it turned me off. Everyone to the right of me was gobbling up some sushi but I settled for the wood grilled halibut with potatoes and loads of veggies. The meal as I stated in my first sentence was quite tasty, the halibut had a nice wood flavor to it and was seasoned really well. My veggies could have been cooked a bit longer but that's more of a preference than anything else. Overall good service, good menu and I will definitely be back! read more

Amazing salmon and my husband said his sushi was really good too! I am gluten free and dairy free and they were able to work with me. I have no words to describe how delicious the salmon was! My husband is vegan and he was able to find some good sushi rolls. Staff was very helpful! The restaurant is decorated so beautifully. read more

Now this is probably my fault. I ordered steak at a seafood restaurant. I have always found that you can find some of the best seafood at a steakhouse, however apparently that isn't true in the reverse in this instance at least. I started with a bowl of the lobster bisque. It was ridiculously huge. It had good flavor, though there was a drawback. The lumps of lobster were plentiful, but not fresh. Now about the steak. I ordered the filet Mignon medium, fearing it would be too underdone if I ordered my usual medium-rare. It was essentially cooked correctly to medium. The problem was with the quality of the meat. It was rather stringy and the outer parts basically disintegrated. If this was truly a CAB filet Mignon cut, it was not of any level of quality I am accustomed. Quite disappointing! I was looking forward to a good lunch upon my arrival at the Peppermill today. I'd been to Oceano before a couple years ago and it had been good then. I can't say I'll be returning. I'll be dining elsewhere on this trip to Reno. Service was good, friendly, and attentive though. Ambiance was pleasant. read more

This review is for the All you can eat Sushi at the bar: I've been here a few times and almost all the time, the rice portion is just too much that one roll can make you really full. My expectations had been so low coz the service too is really really slow...it's like "I gave you one roll and that should fill you up and you shouldn't be waiting for me to ask you for another one" type of service. BUT!!!! Last night was different! I tried them again coz my friend asked me to so I was just ok... (I also think they are the only sushi place that can serve until 10 pm). Sooo it was the first time I saw these amazing chefs, Joshua and Fred and they just flipped my expectations even with just one roll! The moment they asked me what I want in a roll (chaching!) It already made me feel special. Then they made the roll that I want sooo good (what rice?) and Bam! I was so impressed. They gave me the best sushi experience (tied with Hinoki). We found Oceano on Yelp and went for my birthday lunch. I had never been in the Peppermill and it was lovely. Oceano was bright and the decor was beautiful. We came for the AYCE sushi and it was, fins up, the best sushi we have ever had. There were great roll choices, and they were eager to meet my gluten-free requirements, with plenty of different rolls for me to choose from. The fish was so very fresh. I have wondered past this restaurant a few times in the past and it has always caught my eye, with all of the beautiful glass Jelly fish and other sea creatures hanging from the celling, but never made time to eat here. They have remolded and its spectacular!! Well today was my day!! My boss treated us to a fabulous Holiday Lunch! I'm so glad she did, because it was amazing. The atmosphere and décor are beautiful. It makes you feel relaxed and not in a hurry, which is not the feeling I get from most casino restaurants in Reno. Our waiter was very friendly and accommodating. We paid $35 a person for all you can eat and it was the worst $70 ever spent. Honestly, the food was DISGUSTING. We got maybe 9 rolls and enjoyed 3. On top of that, the nigiri was extremely fishy, the salmon was alright but bland. My fiancé said "it tastes the way a fish tank smells", so just imagine that all you tank enthusiasts. Stay AWAY from the spicy tuna, the consistency was unpleasant. It resembled the consistency of left over oatmeal! Service from the waiter and busboy was exceptional. I believe the waiters name was Juan, great communication and recommended a roll that was actually good!! The cost on a large sake is roughly a dollar, so pretty much a giant rip off. Anyway, sushi I would put between medioce and subpar. This is the issue with a lot of AYCE sushi situations, but I was expecting far better from Oceano. Specifically asked for my eel to be hot and crispy, and it was cold and mushy. Gross. But this request is almost always messed up no matter where I go for some reason. Positive note, clam chowder is included and it was pretty decent for west coast CC. Paying for two AYCEs and a large sake, was expecting a bill around $50/55 with tax or so, but it came up north of $70. Not in a hurry to repeat the experience. read more

Always impressed with Peppermill Servers they are first class in service, attentiveness , Friendly. The wife and enjoy the Oceano bar as it is a no smoking area. The fish and it is the best . Cod moist tender with a flacky crust. Just melts in your mouth . Comes with coleslaw crisp cabbage w flavorful sauce, fries, thick potatoe slices hot n crisp. There is also a mixed fish basket which is also a craving for me Comes w fish, shrimp, scallops , calamari. CK on the this basket when you order. To see if same or options. Not worth it, folks. There are billboards around town describing Oceano as the best sushi in town. While the sushi itself was not bad, every other aspect of our experience was. It's usually a given that nigiri comes before your rolls do. Not at Oceano! It's usually a given that if your waitress forgets to bring your sushi plates and wasabi and soy for twenty minutes after your food comes, she at least acts like she feels bad. Not at Oceano! An overall bad experience in a mismanaged restaurant. Everyone at our table left unhappy, promising to never return. read more

TLDR; Decent sushi but wouldn't recommend going here for it since there are much better places in town. They pretty much have no appetizers because servers always say "this is a seafood restaurant that just serves sushi". For any other seafood dishes this place is pretty good. Service Servers are usually nice but they always feel slow and understaffed. If you are getting sushi at a table it's pretty bad as the servers are really inefficient at serving food at the pass before it gets a little old. Walked in and wait was less than 20 mins. My husband ordered the eat all you can Sushi and I ordered Lobster roll. The lobster was wonderful but the bread was hard. Took awhile to get the sushi too. Rather than that, had a lobster that was freshly made and the sushi's were delightful. read more
