Stayed here because thanks to Covid-19, Bodega Bay wasn't open for lodging yet. It looked cute enough online and was only a 20 minute drive to Bodega. When we arrived it wasn't what we thought it would be. The bathroom was dirty, hairs here and there, a brown smudge on the shower curtain, stains on the walls in the bathroom and the bedroom. Pool was dirty, my daughter actually took the pool net and cleaned the leaves out a bit. No hot tub. The room is opened by an actual key and the "deadbolt" can also be opened with a key. It didn't smell nor feel clean. Shampoo dispensers are the ones attached to the wall and are refilled (thanks CA). I will say the front desk guy was great and super friendly and helpful- (we were left with half a roll of toilet paper that was clearly used by the last people who stayed there and he was able to find us one more roll after looking around for a few. The only other thing that was good were the beds, super comfy and I did get a good nights sleep. But for $226 a night, I will wait for Bodegas lodging to open back up. read more

Occidental Hotel made a great spot for a Sonoma getaway with some girlfriends recently! We had five girls in a two queen bed room with plenty of space, towels, and room for balloons. There were even plenty of spring flowers around the hotel balconies that kept it feeling springy and fresh! Parking - plentiful and close! Location - Perfect spot for winery hopping and late night drinks at the nearby bar and walking distance to brunch at Howard's Cafe Cell Service - Dismal...although being disconnected was pretty refreshing The only downside was finding a dirty glass near the sink. Besides that the room and bathroom were pretty clean and tidy but you can't pop champagne with dirty glasses! read more

Great place for a weekend getaway! With all the crazy things happening in life these days, I've been wanting to get away. Google searched and found this adorable lodge! Driving distance to the ocean, and redwoods as well as amazing restaurants all in walking distance. The room was so cute and the lobby looks amazing! Unbelievably smug. I cancelled a reservation on a Wednesday afternoon for a Friday-Saturday. Both my wife and I weren't feeling well and we decided not to make the trip. They charged me the full amount for the Friday stay. I offered to pay a late fee since when I cancelled I was informed of the 72 hour cancellation limit that was in the fine print. I called a full 48+ hours before planned check-in. To top it off , when I called to speak to the manager hoping for relief (the second time, never got a a call back the first time) the desk clerk (Ryder) said that management "sometimes" comes in in the mornings but couldn't tell me any specific time to try to call and get in touch, then abrubtly hung up after explaining it was above his pay grade. I also tried to talk to the manager when I made the cancellation and was told he couldn't come to phone. Very lame, obviously not staying there when I do go to the area in a couple weeks. Filed a complaint with American Express and they opened a case for reversing the charges. read more

This is a motel-style place, where you drive your car right up to the rooms. The building is old but very well maintained. It's not a particularly fancy place. For example, the guest soaps are the tiniest I have ever seen. No luxury there. The walkway in front of the first-floor rooms is spacious and includes some very nice potted plants (mostly geraniums). Unfortunately, there isn't a single place to sit. As a result, many guests dragged the chairs right out of their rooms, giving the place a real trailer park ambiance. Our room, a standard King, was very clean and pleasant, but a bit on the small side. The bed was very comfy and included lots of pillows. The draperies are standard motel issue, one-layer room darkening. So you have two choices: open to the world or pitch dark. It would have been much nicer if there was an additional layer that let light in but didn't allow people to see in. Occidental is a very nice little town. It's great to be within walking distance of EVERYTHING. Depending on the nature of the other guests, The Occidental Hotel can be quiet or incredibly loud. Unfortunately, we were blessed with large family groups on both sides of us. It was awful! To make it worse, since it's an old wood-frame building, it creaks with every step taken by the people on the 2nd floor. PRO TIP: Do not get a room on the 1st floor. It is nice to be able to step right outside to your car, but believe me when those 2nd floor people come home ... I thought that the entire Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus was above us. read more

Occidental is a very small town in Northern California (well north of San Francisco, by about an hour). Keep this in mind when you read this review. For a small town hotel (30 rooms) this is really a nice place to stay. The rooms are clean and well kept, the staff is friendly and helpful and the overall cost is what you would expect to pay for the area. They have a pool (which we did not use) and they are walking distance to all the shops and restaurants in town, making it an ideal place to stay. One of the main selling points for me was it was nice and quiet and up off the road, so that you couldn't really hear the road traffic. If you are looking for a clean place to stay and you happen by the Occidental Hotel, definitely check them out. read more

Why do I give this hotel five stars??? THE CUSTOMER SERVICE: THE BEST EVER!!! Location of the hotel is perfect, right smack in the middle of Occidental, 10 minutes drive to Osmosis, next door is awesome bar and Italian Restaurant with another hotel accros the street and awesome bar, everything is within walking distance. The room is so so but very clean. I would give this place a 5 but the bed / room was not super comfortable. However, they were certainly fine and everything was very clean- which is more important than comfort as far as I am concerned (when traveling). And as the only hotel in town (except for the B&B I suppose) they don't have much incentive to upgrade. We got to know everyone who worked there and they were all extremely friendly and accomodating. No breakfast or such but plenty of options for food in town. FYI No cell signal in Occidental. Hotel has wifi but it wasn't always very reliable for my mobile devices. But you are in beautiful Occidental- why do you need the internet! read more

A really great find! As long as you're not a expecting really luxurious accommodations, this place is a good deal and perfectly acceptable. My husband and I brought some things to eat for breakfast since they have a microwave and fridge, and the restaurants nearby (everything is basically within a block) are exceptional for other meals. I only took off a star because the location is a bit out-of-the-way - we stayed there for a cheaper weekend trip in Sonoma county so we could go to bodega bay for hiking (about 30 min drive) and the Gravenstein apple fair in Sebastopol (about 25 min drive). Definitely plan to go on a Friday evening when the occidental bohemian farmer's market is going on, as they have excellent food and it is right across the street. read more

We stayed 2 nights. I was a bit put off by how much noise the people made walking around in the room above us, so that's why 4 stars. However, the air conditioner worked great, bed was cozy, they accept dogs, and there are amazing restaurants within walking distance. The breakfast place across the street is AMAZING and for dinner we went to Hazel - amazing food!!! Staff was friendly. Definitely will stay there again! read more

I love this hotel. The staff is wonderfully warm and helpful as can be, which for me, is worth it's weight in gold. Every kind of support I needed - questions answered, recommendations provided, problems solved - was met with kindness, patience and competent help. Thank you Ryder, Vanessa, Brian, Al and all those whose names I don't know. You were all just great. The rooms are big, clean and everything works. Think upscale Best Western with more character. The location is ideal, right at the top of the wonderful town of Occidental, with great food, cool shops and fun taverns right out your door. The pool is well-maintained and provides a good spot to hang out in the evening, far enough away from the rooms so as not to disturb guests. The price is more than fair. When we were there, the hotel was fully booked. They could easily raise their rates and yet they choose not to. That's the kind of place this is; old school fair and just plain nice. I will definitely return to the Occidental Hotel and I very much look forward to it! read more

Poor customer service. Overall the attitude seems to be "the customer is not right" here. Stay at the Inn at Occidental instead. I booked a room for 2 nights 5 months ago, and 4 months and 2 weeks ago I cancelled my reservation because a friend attending the same wedding had a duplex and offered a free stay. When I called to cancel the woman on the phone was friendly about the cancellation and I made an amateur mistake of not taking her name or getting some sort of cancellation confirmation because she was so easy going and seemed to have it handled. Fast forward to the trip out to Occidental: Busy driving 4 hours and rushing to a wedding rehearsal followed by a rehearsal dinner, I missed 2 calls from the hotel wondering when I would be arriving. By the time I got these messages it was the morning, aka the day after the first night I would have stayed there. I called back explaining I had cancelled the reservation months ago. The man on the phone asked for more info and of course I explained I hadn't gotten any from her. He seemed perplexed and a little irritated and asked for some time to figure out what was going on. The next day I got a call back from the woman I'd cancelled with. She is the only female working there so she is sure I talked with her. She was cordial at this point, saying they had a strict policy of sending a cancellation email each time a cancellation was made (In other words, "you didn't cancel the reservation or we would know."). When asked where that left me she said they would be charging me for the first night since they were able to book the room to someone else the second night. When I said "I hate to say this, but I'm going to dispute the charge" the woman got cold and frank. Insult to injury. Let me get this straight. I called and cancelled and was told it was no problem, and I did not get a confirmation call or email letting me know they were expecting me ahead of time-- a standard practice and a point at which I could have cleared this up before the trip since it would have been a red flag--and they are charging me. Amazon, Ebay, Nordstrom...these guys are huge for a reason. They care about the customer. The right thing to do was to refund me because they screwed up. Their "strict policy of sending an email confirmation" means nothing to me. I know I cancelled this reservation and they slipped up. Instead of making a potential future customer happy and just biting the bullet they charged me. Even more interesting: They ended up charging me for the entire stay, not the last night as the woman quoted. They clearly have a problem keeping track of what they say they will do and have no integrity with their word. Beware. I travel a lot for work and things always go wrong--usually small, sometimes big. Even if you love this place and don't expect to need to cancel or expect any bending on their part you just don't know ahead of time how things are going to go. If something does go wrong and you're hoping or expecting they'll do whatever it takes to make things work out for you...you'll be wrong. read more

Cute little town! Heads up, no cell service in town. Booked this hotel online, and the website was accurate stating that booking directly on there website is the best deal you will get. Trust me I would know the best way to get a hotel price because I'm a travel agent. Back to the hotel.... Its not the Ritz or anything fancy, but it's not like a crappy motel 6 either. The accommodations were just right for wanting a place to rest your head at the end of the day and get a nice shower. Had a king size bed that was much to my surprise very comfy. My boyfriend and I both have a bad back and the bed wasn't too firm wasn't too soft it was just right. We both had a very well rested sleep and woke up and our backs felt fantastic. I called ahead and made sure to book a room upstairs because the reviews are correct the walls are kind of thin.... we are very fortunate not to have noisy neighbors. I would recommend this hotel for adults only not so much children only because of the thin walls, that's why I gave it 4 stars. The gentleman at the front desk was very kind and welcoming. The town was very cute, it reminded me of the made up Hollywood Hamptons from the TV show Royal Pains. Across the street with a local farmers market they had everything from jewelry to food to produce and flowers. During the evening at the farmers market there was a local band that was playing. This town has a very earthy organic vibe to it with class! There are only a couple hotels to choose from in this quaint little town, I couldn't justify paying $200 + for a place to sleep and relax after a long day at Bodega Bay. The majority of the guests that stay in this town are couples there for a little romantic weekend get away, not to mention dog friendly! There really was no issue with noise even though the walls were thin. Sure you could hear when someone was in the shower or just walked into there room but that was about it...guess we were lucky having a mature classy crowd around. They had a mini fridge and microwave with free WiFi at no extra cost and bonus free parking! So if you want a pleasant not over-the-top very clean place to rest your head for a decent price this is the place to stay! Each room had fresh picked flowers in a vase on the table. Super cute and thoughtful accommodations, this hotel is very quaint and nostalgic. Everything is in walking distance, you can walk from one end of town to the other in 10 min or less. So no worries about location because there is no bad location in this small town. To get to Bodega bay from this town is just a short 10 min drive... Why stay right at Bodega bay and pay the high tourist trap pricing when there are so many cute little quaint towns surrounding Bodega Bay. Did I mention that your right smack dab middle of the beautiful Redwoods? So take a short trip off the direct path of Bodega Bay, support this cute little town and hotel...you won't be disappointed! read more

For starters, shower curtain pole isn't fastened to the wall. Every time we pulled the curtain, the rod came down and hit us in the head. Bed is EXTREMELY firm. OK if you like that. Worst thing was the people above us woke us up both friday and Saturday nights in the middle of the night. Walking (stomping)very loudly around their room for over an hour, dropping stuff on the flour and generally making noise. I didn't want an altercation so didn't go upstairs to ask them to be quiet. Called front desk, noone answered. FIrst night it happened at 2AM and then again about 8 AM. 2nd night it happened at midnight and again about 6 AM. Totally ruined our restful weekend. Told the girl in the office when we left and she didn't make a comment, just stared at me blankly. read more

Was in SFO during Tech convention and wanted to get away! We just love this little town of Occidental. Our favorite place to stay is the Occidental Hotel. It did not disappoint, we were greeted by the front desk clerk, David who was a great help! They make everything so easy and friendly. Our room was super clean and the grounds are impeccable with nice little touches of different flowers! Unfortunately we were just there for the day and had to leave the next morning but we sure had a great day in the city of Occidental and at the Occidental Hotel. Highly recommend! read more

I just stayed again at this Hotel (4th time) and felt compelled to write an update after seeing the latest questionable review---not enough cooking utensils?? what is that--no sur la table zester??---it's not an extended stay type place--- and bad sewage system??--ummmm--what did the rest of the Hotel guests use if the sewage system was backing up??".---and by the way---toilets don't stop up on their own-- EWWWWWWW. Best Suite??---the place only has one two bedroom/kitchenette room so how could this be their best suite--it's the ONLY bigger suite type room--get your facts straight. I've stayed in the only kitchenette room at this Hotel (two visits ago) and found everything to be fine. Since my visit last year it looks like the hotel has added new decorative rock siding along with cedar lap siding. My room also had a new flt screen hd tv, and crown moulding which I do not remember before. I think my bed was brand new too but I cannot be sure. The location is A1 and the town is fun. I will be back for the big Granfondo bike race in october and look forward to it. Obviously I like place and the treatment I receive and only wish reviewers would try to be a bit more accurate. The place has improved since my last stay and deserves a visit. read more

We got what we expected from a low priced hotel: clean room, basic amenities. The beds are so so. No breakfast. The heater was noisy and the water wasn't particularly hot but we'll stay here again because it is clean and a bargain. There's a hotel across the street with all the luxuries you could want, for three times the price. We'll stay at the Occidental Hotel again. read more

We stayed here because there was a discount when going on a Sonoma Canopy Tour (Zip Lines). SO GLAD we stayed! The management is so very friendly - so nice and hospitable. Our room was super clean, well appointed - loved the granite counters, coffee maker, fridge w/freezer, microwave, iron & tv. Really nice for the low price tag! Will definitely recommend this place to any of my friends travelling in the area! There were even DEER (Mama & 2 babies) walking right past our room window in the morning - for about an hour! We reserved a room here for two nights recently. After arriving, we discovered that our room had mold in it. We informed the desk clerk that we could not stay in that room but unfortunately, no other rooms were available. Although it was a very busy weekend in Occidental, the clerk was able to find us a room for one night nearby. That was fine.....until they charged us for the full amount, despite the fact that we didn't stay there. While we were making these alternative arrangements with the front desk, three calls came in asking if they had any availability for that very weekend; that is, they easily could have replaced us with other customers. But they didn't, preferring to charge us for a moldy room we couldn't stay in. STAY AWAY. read more

We really enjoyed our stay at the Occidental Hotel! For the price, it was perfect. It is right in the heart of the very small town of Occidental -- walking distance to all of the restaurants, cafes etc. (not that there are a lot in Occidental! - but what is there is quite good). The service was very good -- friendly and easy to deal with. The room was spacious, and very clean, comfortable, and quiet. They had a coffee maker, refrigerator and microwave, which would come in helpful for longer stays. Really great experience here. The rooms were quaint and quiet despite being on the ground level and being close to the office. We were running seriously par for check in and the guy at the desk called to make sure we were still coming and to make sure we weren't lost or anything. When I asked for directions to Santa Rosa and food suggestions he was a wealth of knowledge and SUPER friendly. We will definitely stay there again when we're in the area. read more

Only one star due to the VERY rude staff they have and the fact they fraudulently tried to charge my credit card when the site I booked through specifically said they do not charge anything to your card until you check in. There little desk clerk Ryder was yelling at me on the phone basically saying there policy is differant then the place I booked through, uh ok the fact is you still charged my credit card without permission! Based on the reviews we will be cancelling our reservation, one thing I won't deal with is rude staff, what a turn off! The end result Ryder ended up hanging up on me, maybe if he can't handle customer service the owner should spend a little more on the staffs income to get someone that may have a stronger head on there shoulders! Took a chance on the Occidental and boy were we glad we did. Laughably close to our favourite places in town, well furnished rooms, everything just clicks. More importantly we got to meet the wonderful staff who just made our stay the best, particularly the incomparable Vanessa, who not only went above and beyond to answer our questions and make us feel at ease, but even sorted us our when we forgot a whole drawer full of clothes in our room after we left. She handled it with goddamn aplomb. I can't say enough good things about her and the Occidental. If you have the means go - you will thank me. read more

WORST hotel ever. The carpet was disgusting. While walking around barefoot for 5 minutes, I noticed my feet had turned black. The towels were unclean and the owner was unapologetic when confronted with these issues. The hotel was noisy, small, and it's clear why it's less expensive than the others. This lodge is great for families & big groups. They have a couple of suites with a living room, 2 bedrooms & full kitchen. The staff was very helpful. They also have a wonderful restaurant, Negri's Occidental Italian Restaurant. Food is served family style. Negri's Occidental Lodge is high on a hill. I don't think it's handicap friendly because there are no handicap ramps and no hand rails in the bath tub. It is, however, pet friendly. The price is great. According to Brian, one of the staff members, if you book on their website, you get a discount regardless of whether you are a AAA member or not. It is situated in downtown Occidental where there are shops, restaurants (El Mariachi, Howard's Cafe, Union Hotel Italian Restaurant, Negri's Occidental Italian Restaurant, Bohemian Market, Connely's Mart, etc.) Occidental is one of 3 townships on Bohemian Highway forgotten by time (http://www.bohemianconnection.com/). read more

Hmmm.... my folks used to stay here over many years and have fond memories... My mom and I just stayed here since it was the anniversary of my stepfather's death... The biggest issue was there were people in the room above us and they were really loud... I don't think it was people being loud so much as the walls are just really thin. Also, I think there should be two luggage racks per room and there should be a way to turn on a light in the bathroom without having to turn on the blower. ...I personally can't see myself coming back... On the other hand, I agree, the staff was quite pleasant. read more

I didn't stay at the Inn. I stayed at a vacation home about a mile up the road, but I ate dinner and had some drinks at the bar every night for three nights. The bar is super cozy and my party of three all thought that the bartender (Kim) was a rock star. Our drinks were yummy, our service was quick, our pizza was tasty and Kim was friendly and didn't miss a single detail. I found it real easy to hang out here and look forward to coming back if I'm ever in town again! read more

REALLY enjoyed our stay here. It was my birthday & my daughter had camp for the weekend at a beautiful camp there in Occidental. We had a very private room upstairs (#136) and loved it. Everything was very clean & comfortable. Free WiFi is always a plus!! This hotel is not new, but it is so well taken care of that it was hard to find anything wrong! My only complaints would be that the bed was a little to firm for my liking & the toilet paper was really cheap....lol We bought some across the street at the market. Everything was in walking distance & the staff is awesome. We didn't use the pool as it was November, but the pool area was immaculate & inviting. The fridge & microwave were great to have in the room and there's a coffee maker in the room as well. (You should bring your own coffee & the small basket type filters if you want a GOOD cup of coffee.) Lots of good food nearby & our day trip to Bodega Bay was great.
