Me and my girlfriend spent a weekend there and the family was out of town, at Disneyland actually, and in the meantime it was run by some snobby guy with an attitude. Food was so-so, indoor hot tub didn't work properly and was running most of the night. Overall, it wasn't a good experience for the hefty price tag we payed. Update: The owner of Avalon, Hilary, has contacted me a couple of days ago, expressing sincere concern about our disappointing stay at her B&B back in April 2007. It is a good sign that she is taking reviews and opinions about her business serious, as every competent business owner should. I attribute the somewhat mediocre experience to her absence and I am sure that our experience would have been different if the family would not have been out of town during our visit. I have to echo the two other posters in regards to the rooms and surroundings of the Avalon Bed & Breakfast. The room we stayed in was in impeccable condition, the picturesque surroundings and tranquility we got to enjoy on the patio were perfect, except for the above mentioned problems. That's the sole reason I can't give it 5 stars. However, Hilary has since offered us a free night at her establishment, which is a nice way of trying to remedy our experience. Pros: Delicous breakfast meals; fantastic patio area with heated lamps and fire pits (great for groups); beautiful landscaped grounds, working fireplace to heat the room, very comfortable bedding. Ralph (Hilary's brother) was very accommodating and happy to serve. Cons: The Tower room does not have a hot tub, so you have to use the public ones outside (not ideal). Overall, if you are staying in Somona (near Sebastopol), I recommend Avalon. It is very rustic and off-the beated path, which means very quiet, peaceful sleeping. Ralph was an incredible host who helped us make dinner reservations, called taxis and sipped wine with us. Cool dude. Hilary was friendly and is a great breakfast chef. Giant redwoods! Gorgeous, private, spacious room! Super comfortable bed with luxurious sheets and heavenly pillows! Super plush bathrobes and towels! Fantastic, organic bath products! Lots of outdoor seating surrounded by trees and nature! Outdoor hotub underneath giant redwoods! Super yummy homemade cookies and tea/coffee always available! And saving the best for last, super friendly hosts who totally take care of you! Each person gets an AMAZING breakfast made custom for them. Had a wonderful 2 days at Avalon Bed and Breakfast. Was a perfect location for the rest and relaxation that my wife and I needed. And there are so many things do in the surrounding areas that it made our trip excellent. First of all the rooms are nice, and Hillary, Gary and AJ are such genuine hosts. You can just tell that they want you to have a nice experience. We had lunch at Underwood in Graton which was just a couple miles away - then went to the Barlow area in Sebastopol - the next day we hiked in Armstrong Forest with the redwoods and went to Bodega Bay. Had a great diner at Terrapin and saw the beautiful coastline. The last day we went to Freestone to the bakery and cheese place to get some olive oil we loved then headed to Sonoma to meet some friends and wine tasting. All thru our vacation we have Avalon as a great home base - felt like home and they were enthusiastically helpful in making our vacation wonderful. read more

My partner and I recently stayed here for 3 nights and all i can say is WOW!. If you ever need a place to stay that actually allows you to come back rested and refreshed this is the place. We stayed in the Wizards Room (1 of 3 rooms offered). Every day you awake and head upstairs to the main floor of the house for coffee and juice or a muffin prior to breakfast. All the food is locally sourced and just mouth wateringly delicious. Hilary and Jackie served us each day and provided us with food to last us the morning. Hilary , Gary & AJ were engaged each day but Hilary is over the top, she provided us inside information on where to visit wine and food wise. The Avalon is on our permanent list of places to stay when up in the wine country. We can highly recommend this B&B without reservation. It's like your whisked away into something out of a storybook and amongst the redwoods i dare you not to awaken restful and refreshed. Thank you Hilary - you are amazing! read more

The surroundings are lush and peaceful and the room was cozy and romantic. Perfect setting for our mini-honeymoon. We stayed in "Guenevere's Tower", where we were welcomed by a warm fireplace, chocolate and champagne. The room was so nice we almost decided to to hole up and hide in it all day, and the amenities were perfectly in character: books, toiletries, claw-foot tub, postcards to make your friends jealous....Breakfasts are included and are top notch, gourmet and delicious. At 5:00 p.m. wine and cheese are served, also a good time to meeting some of your fellow guests. Whether you mingle, or not you *will* meet Hilary and her son AJ, who are some of the most pleasant, wonderful innkeepers you'll ever meet (AJ is especially personable, and should have a long and excellent career ahead of him if he wants it.) Suggestions were given to us once we expressed our preferences and were spot on for both local wineries and eateries. One night Hilary's recommendation sent us to the Underwood Bistro, which was delicious and fun. There were only 4 rooms, averaging $350 a night, but it's totally worth it for your getaway; anniversary, honeymoon, or therapeutic vacation. Our only regret was that we couldn't stay any longer. This is one of those Sonoma B&B's that is consistently booked on the weekends so plan ahead for your shag, I meant stay. The breakfasts here are truly gourmet. I treated my wife to Avalon for our anniversary. It was expensive, but the reviews led me to think it would be a worthwhile experience. Well, it wasn't what we expected, and I frankly have trouble understanding the overly positive reviews - perhaps this is because the owners very actively ask for reviews. The service was fine but not special, and the breakfast was fine also, nothing outstanding. There was a feeling of a nice family home where the BB is a side business line, not professionally run. There were many details where things were off - it was a cold and rainy day and the fireplace in the living room was off, the hostess had mentioned "afternoon tea" but there was not such a thing, there was "tea in the afternoon", which consisted of cookies and cheese (nothing to go with the cheese until I asked for it, by the way), the room was quirky and rather odd in a way (felt a bit like a furnished basement - not anyone's idea of luxury), etc. I hadn't thought of writing a review, but I received several emails mentioning a review and decided to do it. When I looked up Yelp for information before making a reservation, I noticed that poor reviews on Yelp got aggressively replied to by the owner. It is possible, I suppose, that the owners don't visualize that what they offer isn't what one would term "luxury", and attribute any negativity in a review to a flawed perception by their guests. Be what it may, and much that I like the family-owners, I don't recommend Avalon - for that money one can stay at a high-end traditional BB in any number of places. read more

My boyfriend, JP and I had the good fortune to stay at the Avalon Luxury Inn a few weeks ago and I was just remarking to him that it was the best vacation I've had in a very long time. I'll start with the room. We stayed in the "Enchanted Forest" and the last day JP looked at me and said, "do you think we could just move in here?" It was that amazing, truly!!! The room itself is gorgeous and cozy with a gas fireplace that heats up everything in a matter of minutes. The bed was a dream to sleep on. The décor is fantastic and the shower, oh the shower!!! Plus, his and hers sinks And having your own private hot tub on the wooden deck just outside your front door is beyond superb, it's pure bliss. Looking out into the redwood forest dreamily... And then came the food.... WOW and not a little wow, a BIG HUGE GIGANTIC WOWZERS!!! Hilary is an amazing cook, amazing!!!! I am gluten free and had basically given up on eating any and all baked goods for years because well, let's face it gluten-free-people, there's no point in eating it if it doesn't taste good.... And then came Hilary!!! For our first morning she made us gluten free pancakes, PANCAKES!! I haven't had pancakes in longer than I can remember and these tasted better than any gluten pancake I've ever had in the past. Her food presentations are absolutely stunning!!! The coffee was fantastic and she even enjoyed making steamed milk for JP and steamed organic soy for me. Oh yes, everything she serves IS organic!!! And the food list goes on and just gets more and more amazing.... From actual gluten free biscuits which melted in my mouth to gluten free home baked bread that I took back home and shared with another gluten-free-ite. And this friend of mine raved over the bread and asked why Hilary doesn't start her own line because as this person said and I concur "this is the best bread I've ever tasted!!!" She even made JP regular home made bread with gluten!!! And then there was the flour-less chocolate cake, the cookies.... All made by Hilary and each more amazing than the last. Every morning, after the delicious coffee she would serve us elaborate fruits either soaked in wine or some other equally extravagant variation. The first morning it was grapefruit with fruit confit and then covered in sugar and torched to have a crème brulee top!!! Breakfast's main course was sausage or pancakes or egg soufflé or an omelet topped with asparagus. I could praise the food for hours but let's move onto the hosts. OK, there's not enough room here to fully rave about the hosts as they deserve to be raved about. Both Hilary and Gary spent time with us showing us maps, talking to us about hiking trails and suggesting restaurants, shops and little towns close by. I would never have guessed it but there is so much to do there!!! We went shopping, we went hiking, we lazed about in the hot tub, we ate - we sang and danced under the stars... OK not really but we could have. We left after those 3 glorious nights renewed, refreshed and grinning from ear to ear. What a magical place. We can't wait to return!!!! And by all means do yourselves a big favor and just go!!!! read more

Looooooved this place! My bf and I came for a romantic anniversary weekend amongst the wineries. I forget the name of our room but it had the private outdoor hot tub. It was awesome. The room was soooo cozy and just perfect. We had one breakfast that was just so amazingly delicious. It was nice to sit around a table with the other guests and chat. We went on a little excursion through the trails near the inn. It was a nice little way to get away for a bit, nothing too extreme. The hostess was super friendly and helpful. She suggested a great place to eat dinner in Sebastopol (Peter Lowell) and even made the reservations for us. We are poor student types so we could only afford to stay for one night. What a magical retreat! If you are looking for a truly unique experience in the redwoods with comfort, luxury, and amazingly hospitable hosts -this is it. With attention to all the small yet important details, they provided a wonderful afternoon wine and cheese on the deck, complete breakfast in the dining room (which was very good) and our room was very comfortable, complete with a steam shower and access to a hot tub. Just returned from a wonderful weekend away at Avalon. We had never stayed at a true bed and breakfast before and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. I decided to surprise my partner for his birthday by taking him to a bed & breakfast in Sonoma county a couple weeks ago. I found Avalon on the internet, and was impressed with the description and pictures. So, I had high expectations. This place exceeded my expectations! It was just an amazing experience and we both loved it so much. It is by far the best bed & breakfast I have ever stayed at. I don't normally write yelp reviews but had to for this place. We stayed in the Wizard's Quarters room. It was magical and great. The bed was very comfortable, the set up including the bathroom was nice, and we enjoyed the fireplace and of course the steam room shower. There was also a nice hot tub that is shared amongst the guests. Since there are only three rooms for people to stay, you usually can get the hot tub to yourself. One of the rooms also has a private hot tub. The property is surrounded by beautiful redwood trees. There is a stream connected to the property and you can hear the peaceful sound of the moving water. There are also options for hiking close to the property and you feel like you are in the middle of nature even though you are very close to wineries, etc.. Some of the other highlights were how welcoming the owner Hilary was, the comfort of staying in the house, wine hour by a fire pit which included wine, cheese and sausage, and Hilary's yummy breakfast. Hilary also was very helpful in providing recommendations for restaurants and other information. I highly recommend Avalon and we look forward to staying there again! read more

Awesome place to stay! Located in the middle of an enchanted grove of redwoods, the Inn itself is cozy and well appointed. Hillary and Gary make our stay feel like home - from catering to our dietary needs, to an evening outdoor fire pit conversation under the stars. We were there for our honeymoon and couldn't have chosen a better more private and lovely setting. My husband and I decided to take a last minute baby moon at the end of 2017. Booking online was super easy. Hilary called to confirm reservation and to double check food preferences and check in time. When we arrived, Hilary gave us the grand tour, which included showing us how to operate our in room fireplace and the outdoor hot tub. The coffee/tea bar is in the main house's kitchen and is available 24/7. Our room had it's own mini fridge stocked with sodas and waters. Cookies were served at 4. Wine and cheese from 5-6pm. Breakfast 9am and check out at 12noon. Highlights were The room... the space was really well thought out and anything you needed to enjoy the space was provided. A little basket for going to the hot tub included towels, flip flops, and a lantern. The bathroom had the basics shampoo, conditioner, soap and a variety of other items, bug spray, aloe, sunblock, hairspray, lotion, perfume, makeup wipes, razors etc in case you forgot something. Also plenty of interesting and varied reading material in the form of magazines and books. Also wine glasses, bottle opener and a stack of napkins. the host's.. my husband is more of a private guy and normally a B&B wouldn't fly, but the hosts gave us plenty of space and if you didn't want to chat or interact, you could enjoy the space for the most part quietly. They were also available to give area travel and dinner tips as well as just chat. Location... centrally located to Occidental, Sebastapol, Santa Rosa, Guerneville... we found a great walking path just 5 minutes away by car, plenty of nice restaurants within 5-15 minutes, and seemed like a dozen wineries. We did cheese tasting just 7 minutes away. But the best part was the actual property... has it's own babbling brook, tons of trees and just smells good to be out in the country. Food... the breakfasts and cookies were amazing!!! Definitely homemade with love. Real ingredients and served hot. I could keep going on and on about our special visit but you should really just experience it for yourself. I think it would be a nice trip for anyone wanting to recharge, refresh, relax or have a special experience above and beyond the normal hotel. I would definitely go back. Even without being able to use the hot tub or go wine tasting it was still worth it!! read more
