Featuring a diverse menu…read morethat features steak frites, a hamburger, salads, legitimate French Onion Soup - pizzeta's and Pad Thai - among other delights - the setting and the comfort of being in this beautiful spot never fails. On a lazy Saturday afternoon, I visited and was promptly seated and served. I enjoyed a romaine salad, my son enjoyed the mac & cheese - his favorite anywhere - and I had a burger with fries. The burger came with white cheddar cheese and bacon, with chipotle ketchup, regular ketchup, and aïoli on the side. I had a glass of Chardonnay, and the wine list is what you would expect from a Sonoma County restaurant. By the bottle or by the glass you are assured of a good selection. Nothing you order here will disappoint you. The dining room is a rustic space with a lot of wood appointments. There's a nice long classic bar. And there's an outdoor patio where you can eat and enjoy the beautiful weather. If you're anywhere near the place, you owe it to yourself to visit Underwood or a lovely lunch or dinner. Hang out with the locals, enjoy a down home relaxed meal.

Worth noting though: it gets very noisy. The menu offers an interesting mix of Thai and French cuisine - not quite fusion, but rather two distinct menus side by side. Think of it as a safe bet for groups with different cravings. The portions are decent and the prices are in line with typical Bay Area standards - not a bargain, but not outrageous either. Unfortunately, what brought my rating down to three stars was the service. For a relatively simple meal - oysters to start and one entrée each - the pacing was surprisingly slow. We waited nearly 20 minutes for our plates to be cleared, another 10 for the dessert menu, and after an additional 15-minute wait we ended up canceling dessert altogether, as the evening had stretched to two hours and we had a long drive ahead. To be fair, the tables around us seemed to have a smoother experience, so perhaps we caught them on an off night. I'd like to give them another shot, but I'm leaving with mixed feelings that honestly reflect a three-star experience - great bones, but the service needs work.

It starts with the reservation--the very first interaction with a restaurant. When I choose a fine dining experience, I want every touchpoint to feel special from beginning to end. Eliza, the reservation specialist at SingleThread, delivered exactly that. From the very beginning of the meal, there was a clear sense of precision, elegance, and intention. The opening presentation was stunning, filled with an assortment of beautifully composed small bites featuring oyster, mushroom, sea bream, and a variety of other seasonal ingredients. Each bite felt delicate yet purposeful, showcasing both technical refinement and remarkable balance. One of the most memorable dishes of the evening was the bluefin tuna moriawase paired with strawberries. Normally, fruit in savory dishes tends to feel distracting or overly sweet to me, but the execution here was exceptional. The chefs managed to create a harmony between sweetness, tartness, acidity, and umami that elevated the tuna rather than overshadowing it. It was a dish that felt thoughtful, restrained, and incredibly well composed. The consistency throughout the progression of the menu was equally impressive. Course after course arrived with meticulous presentation and a strong sense of identity. Every dish felt polished and intentional, balancing visual artistry with flavors that were equally compelling. There was never a moment where the meal lost momentum, and the pacing allowed each course to feel distinct while still contributing to a cohesive experience. That said, there was one course that completely missed the mark for our group. The milk and honey dessert, which resembled a sponge cake topped with a whipped goat cheese foam, was overwhelmingly pungent and difficult to approach as a dessert course. The intensity of the goat cheese dominated every other component, to the point where it felt less like a composed dessert and more like being punched by a goat farm. Looking around the dining room, it seemed we were not alone in our reaction. Interestingly, when we mentioned that this was the only dish we did not enjoy, we were told, "if at least 1 out of 10 guests enjoy it, we consider it a win." It was certainly an unexpected response, especially given how polished and thoughtful the rest of the experience had been. Even with that misstep, the overall meal was exceptional. SingleThread succeeds in delivering a dining experience that feels elegant, immersive, and deeply personal. Between the artistry of the presentations, the balance of flavors, and the technical execution across the menu, it remains one of the most impressive three Michelin star experiences in California.

The restaurant's large windows provide beautiful waterfront views no matter where you're seated. Our waitress (whose name I unfortunately forgot) was fantastic. She mentioned she'd been there for 14 years, which says a lot in itself. She was friendly, knowledgeable about every dish, and gave us excellent recommendations. I know Caesar dressing contains anchovies, but I was hesitant about having actual fish on my salad. I'm so glad she encouraged me to try the cooked anchovies on the side--they were delicious. Perfectly salty and a great complement to the salad. The pork chop entrée was perfection! The pork was cooked beautifully, and the bread pudding side was just as memorable. I'm not entirely sure what was in it, but it reminded me of garlic bread in the best way. The applesauce was also a nice touch. The halibut was cooked perfectly as well, and the mashed potatoes practically melted in your mouth. For sides, the grilled asparagus was exactly what you'd hope for, and the crispy potatoes lived up to their name, perfectly seasoned with a great crunch. The soup of the day was a creamy spring onion soup with crispy pancetta. Although just as delicious as everything else ordered, its the one plate we wished the portion was bigger for the price it was going for. We've eaten at plenty of restaurants, but this may be the first time where every single thing we ordered--from the entrées to the sides and sauces--was a 10/10. Needless to say, this won't be our last visit. It was absolutely worth it and such a memorable part of our anniversary trip to Bodega Bay.

The time between ordering and receiving food was lengthy. It is possible that they were understaffed for a Mothers Day brunch. However, our waitress did check in before food arrived, to let us know the status of our order. Almost everything that we ordered was under $20. This was as opposed to a place like The Flamingo, which was charging $70 *per person* for its Mothers Day brunch. Drakes has a great view, but the most comfortable booth seating is on the wall, farthest from the windows. The tables at the windows are only for 2 (our party was 3).

My wife ordered the Beer Batter Fried Oysters ($23.91), which had 6 large perfectly cooked oysters and french fries. The oysters were wonderful! (She shared some with me and I wholeheartedly agree that they rank among the best fried oysters I have ever tasted!) I had a bowl of Portuguese Style Fish Stew ($10.38), which was a great tasting red broth, filled with lots of seafood of various types. Delicious! There are so many delicious flavor options to choose from, and each one was packed with flavor. We also ordered the halibut fish and chips, which were outstanding. The coating was perfectly crispy, and the fish was flaky, fresh, and cooked to perfection. My friends chose the halibut fish tacos, which looked amazing and are a great lighter, healthier option. Since we were celebrating, I decided to splurge and order a bottle of bubbly. They offer a smaller bottle for around $50, but I got the standard bottle for $90, but it was the perfect addition to our meal and made the occasion feel extra special. The food, atmosphere, and beautiful Bodega Bay setting make this a place I would gladly return to again and again. If you're visiting the Bodega Bay area, this is definitely a must-stop destination!

That's a hard pass for anyone who knows what a real, savory Louie dressing should taste like. Worcestershire, horseradish, chili sauce -- that's a Louie. Sweet pickle relish in a bottle? That's a lazy chef cutting corners on the King of Salads. I refused to order it on principle. But here's the thing -- everything else I had was outstanding. The fish and prawns with chips were excellent, cooked perfectly, and the clam chowder was genuinely superb. This kitchen clearly knows its way around seafood when it wants to. So the good news is there's plenty to love here. Just do yourself a favor and steer clear of the Crab Louie until they decide to make a proper dressing.
