OBRA is located in a plaza with plenty of parking. The place itself is pretty small with only two tables outside to sit and eat so it's more of a take out place. The service was friendly and quick. I ordered one jalapeño empanadas, a ropa vieja burrito, and a nutella pastry, which came out to a total of around $40. I enjoyed the jalapeno empanada, the two sauces it came with were very good. The burrito was OK, I liked the meat but should have not included the fries. What stood out the most was their pastry. It was warm and flavorful. I nice sweet treat. 8/10
My recent visit was great! I happened to pass by OBRA Bakery on my way to Barnes & Noble and spontaneously stopped by for a beef potato ball. I ended up ordering two potato balls, one for me and one for my boyfriend and asked them to package them separately. Each one came with their green sauce and aioli. I poured both sauces on top of the potato ball and the flavors blended really well together. The potato ball was savory and delicious! Customer service was also great. The staff was friendly and welcoming. Next time I will try the chicken potato ball.
This bakery was recommended to me by a friend, and I'm so glad she did! OBRA is a Latin American bakery that serves sandwiches, pastries, desserts, and more. They have two locations, one in Long Beach and one in Santa Ana. Their Long Beach location is located in a shopping plaza, and I didn't have any trouble finding parking. They had lots of different items in their bakery case to choose from! We had to get their OBRA Balls, which come with beef or chicken. Their OBRA Beef Ball has ground beef and mozzarella surrounded by mashed potato and deep fried. It was cheesier than I expected! The OBRA Chicken Ball is a more of a cone shape and has shredded chicken, aji amarillo sauce, and cheese surrounded by mashed potato and deep fried. Both were tasty! They serve it with a side of their spicy mayo and green salsa for dipping. They're known for their empanadas, so we had to try some of these too! We got a Baked Chicken, Chicken Curry, Beef, and Ropa Vieja. Their Beef and Chicken are some of their most popular. The Beef Emapanda has spicy ground beef, onions, and potatoes, and their Chicken Empanada has shredded chicken, mild spicy creamy yellow chili sauce, onions, potatoes, and mozzarella cheese. The Chicken Curry is one of their newer empanadas and has diced chicken thighs cooked in mild spicy curry and coconut milk, steamed rice, bell peppers, onions, and cilantro. But my favorite was the Ropa Vieja! It has tasty shredded beef, onions, bell peppers, tomato, garlic, seasonings, and cilantro. The meat is so tender and juicy! For desserts, we got a Cocada and a Peach and Dulce de Leche Turnover. The Cocada is their coconut macaroon made with shredded coconut, covered with chocolate. It is massive! Very moist on the inside. I'll be back to try their sandwiches and get some more OBRA balls!
A small bakery we love coming to for delicious empanadas! Breakfast and BBQ Pork are my favorites and my husband loves the Cuban, Chicken Curry, and Ropa Vieja. He also likes the Beef Ball and Square Pie. Their sweet baked goods are good too. We've tried a cookie cake and a macaroon. The location is small, but they're very popular! The place seems clean and the service is friendly.
I went to OBRA Handbakery to try their empanadas. If you're not familiar, an empanada is a baked or fried pastry turnover filled with various ingredients--here they bake them. Originating in Spain, empanadas spread to neighboring countries and across the Spanish colonial network, resulting in many styles and fillings. The online magazine longbeachize.com has a great article on the owners of this business. By now, I've tried every empanada they offer at least once. What I order depends on my mood, but there are plenty of fillings to choose from. I have to say, this shop is consistent--the size and shape of the empanadas and the bread-to-filling ratio. I also appreciate that they mark the pastries, so you know exactly what's inside. But do not think they only serve empanadas. They also have sweet cakes and pasties as well.
My partner and I visited OBRA HandBakery for brunch after our marathon and this was a solid choice. It's quite the small shop with seating on the counter and 3 tables on their outside patio area. Parking - Free in a shared large parking lot, plentiful We were both intrigued by their potato balls, empanadas, and breakfast burrito in which we ordered 4 potato balls (2 chicken/2 beef), 2 empanadas (1 chicken, 1 beef), and 1 breakfast burrito to share. Our order came out in about 10 minutes or so, not too busy. Total came out to about $42 which is quite expensive for the amount of items in my opinion. 1. Potato Balls - By far my favorite menu items from the visit, they weren't as crispy/crunchy as Portos but they're bigger. Portions are big and it's filled with your choice of filling, very delicious, highly recommend 9/10 2. Empanadas - Usually I love empanadas but these were a bit disappointing on my end. They were softer than empanadas that I usually have, although delicious still but definitely not my favorite from the bakery. 6.5/10 3. Breakfast Burrito - Talk about portions, this breakfast burrito is loaded with ingredients, eggs among many other ingredients, super flavorful and savory. It does have a bit of a kick to it which adds to the taste, pretty good! 8.5/10 Overall, a solid brunch spot, although a bit expensive, it's still worth to check them out. Pretty decent tasting potato balls, breakfast burrito is big in portion and delicious as well, along with their empanadas which can be a hit or miss depending on the style of empanadas you like. Definitely a good spot for a snack even if you're in the area.

They had a super crunchy texture with a nice coating of bread crumbs. I would order these again. Also had to try some empanadas since those are what they are known for. The empanadas are made from scratch on flour dough and served with spicy mayo and mild green salsa on the side. I was amazed at the wide variety of flavors they had on display. Their best seller, the beef empanada, was very flavorful and juicy. As for the chicken empanada, one of the most popular options, it was rich and creamy. Although the fillings were great, I thought the crust was too dry. I would skip these next time. The breakfast burrito was pretty good and comforting to eat. It was packed with scrambled eggs, onions, sausage, fries, mozzarella cheese, creamy cilantro sauce, and chipotle mayo. The ratio was just right. I enjoyed the combination of all the ingredients. In addition to savory goods, they offer plenty of sweets, pastries, and beverages. Make sure to look out for deals that they may have going on. If you buy a dozen empanadas, you can get 2 additional ones for free. They even have loyalty rewards you can sign up for.

After my workout class I was feeling hungry and here I go opening up my Yelp and closest bookmark goes to empanadas!! Heard lots of good things about this spot and heard they opened another location that means it's that good! Went inside and so many selections of desserts and empanadas! They also have massive potato balls!! I had to get a beef potato ball and it was huge and filled with cheese. The outer layer was so crunchy and beef filling was yummy. I got 4 empanadas since I couldn't decide on just 1 Breakfast- I wanted something breakfasty- has potato's. Felt like breakfast Cuban- yummy and the green sauce was perfect with it Chicken curry- very curry.. not sure how I felt about it curry in an empanada Chicken- can't go wrong and the green sauce and the creamy sauce worked well with it 4 empanadas and a potato ball for $25, a bit hefty But if you buy a dozen empanadas, you get 2 free!
I do a happy dance every time I eat here! I love their cheeseballs more than Porto's. The sauces they provide are delicious. The service and the speed of the food/drinks ready is top notch! I work near by and I always recommend Orba!
Been here before! Had a craving today for some great empanadas. Ended up not getting any empanada, but did try the signature burger and Cuban sandwich. Both items were freshly made and the ingredients were all complementing each other. We also grabbed an Arnold Palmer and an iced cafe latte. Refreshing! Service was fast considering that it's made to order! This place has always been clean, well lit, and breezy. Will return and for sure get empanadas next time =]
Was excited to hear this was one of the stops on our Long Beach bike route. They said it was a coffee shop, but was excited to see there were pastries and empenadas! The two I got were great selections! I initially wanted curry but the person berfore me had just bought all of them. Didn't get a drink cause I was limited on cash, so I just drank water. Lots of pretty cool items here. Worth another visit definitely.

This place was a nice little, hole-in-the-wall cafe for a quick bite. Seating is limited. There is a small bar area inside, but nobody was sitting inside, because the line to order was kind of taking up that area. There are also three tables outside that seat four, four, and two for a maximum of ten. The place fills up fast, but empties just as quick. And their baked goods go quick, so grab them while you can! I ordered the Cuban Empanada as an appetizer. The savory rice and bean filling was a perfect compliment to the sweet ripe plantain filling and hint of sweetness in the dough. They are baked and the dough is thick and chewy, so if you're not a fan of that type of Empanada, be warned... I ordered the Cuban Sandwich as the main course. It was DELICIOUS and I would recommend it to everyone! If you're a purist, like a few of my friends and family though, be warned. Their take on the Cuban is made with Ciabatta not Cuban Bread, Mozzarella not Swiss, and is toasted not pressed... I ordered a Vanilla & Dulce De Leche Cookie for Dessert. It was AMAZING! Soft chewy on the inside, a little crunch on the outside. The taste of a sugar cookie with little sugar bombs of Dulce De Leche throughout. Perfect. And I washed it all down with a Tres Leches Latte (Hot). It was DIVINE! Very much on the sweet side, which I absolutely enjoyed to the last drop. But, if you do not like it too sweet, you can ask them to lower the sweetness level. Also, they will give you an option of dairy milk (2%), almond milk, or oat milk when you order. I've had this on my to do list and came to visit family out in HB so we decided to finally stop by. It's a tiny little place with 2 tables with stools out front. There's tons of pastry, empanadas and potato ball options right in the case as you walk in. There's so many options for empanadas it was hard to make a decision. In the end we chose to share a ropa vieja. It was so good by itself but with the 2 sauces it came with it was even better. One sauce was like a sweet chili aioli and the other was a green salsa. Yum! We also ordered a Cuban sandwich to share which is one of the popular menu items. Ugh, it was so good! I'm super glad I finally made it in and look forward to coming back. read more
OBRA HandBakery is a classic LB spot known for their delicious Cuban empanadas! This spot is located in a plaza with a good amount of parking spots. They have limited seating inside, but have a nice outdoor patio with a couple tables for seating. For their menu, they have a great selection of coffee, tea, cakes, cookies, burritos, empanadas, and more! Wifey and I ended up getting a spread consisting of the Beef Ball, Ropa Vieja, BBQ Pork, Cuban, Chicken Curry, and Jalapeño empanadas. Overall, these are hands down some of the best empanadas you can get in LB and beyond! All of the staff here are very friendly and welcoming. We always make sure to stop by to support their business and grab some delicious bites every time we are in the area. A convenient walk up to order bakery shop off PCH. Their empanadas are packed with many varieties of fillings. I ordered the tres leche latte that is layered with coffee, condensed milk, and regular milk that brings out just the right sweetness. Staff is extremely welcoming, making you feel like a regular. Definitely you feel like a local here and can clearly tell that OBRA is part of the community. read more
The customer service was great and enjoyed the experience, they had a plethera of items to grab, I got beef potato balls and chicken potato balls 3 empanadas the Cuban, beef, chicken curry. The items o grabbed were underwhelming they weren't seasoned well and I think they give you the sauce to carry it and that was lnt it for me I wanted them to taste good on their own and didn't get that. read more

Excellent Latin bakery - a must visit place in Long beach area. This small but mighty modern Latin bakery with traditional empanadas, potato balls and so many great pastries, cookies and cakes! Tres leches, Dulce , guava, etc. Plus sandwiches and soups! There potato balls in beef & chicken are way better than Porto's, and other Cuban/latin restaurants. Plenty of parking in a large lot - coffee, matcha and espresso to go along with the delicious food. Super friendly family service. Frozen empanadas available to bake at home. What's sad is how long it took me to come here after years of wanting to try it, yet passing it by... all because of impatience lol. I heard about there being a line or possibly a wait at certain times and let that stop me from visiting. What's even more sad is when I finally visited, I didn't encounter a single person in front of me because I placed an online order on a Friday afternoon. To be fair, I didn't know I could order online, but still... a brief wait isn't going to kill me. Lol Here's the order (of someone wanting to try all the things, also sharing with others, but still wanting to try it all lol): 1 Baked Chicken Empanada 1 Baked Beef Empanada 1 Baked Cuban Empanada 1 OBRA Ball *Beef* 1 OBRA Ball *Chicken* 1 House Chimichurri 1 Spicy Mayo 1oz 1 Chocolate Chip Cookie 1 Dulce de Leche Brownie Obviously I didn't try it all, but here's verdict on the items I did try: 1. I prefer their savory options over sweet/or desserts. 2. The menu said the beef empanada is a customer favorite, but DO NOT sleep on the Cuban. Hands down my favorite. Reminds me of empanadas I used to get at this spot in Yonkers. So good! 3. Now the beef ball? My favorite ball. Lol I paid for extra sauces but the very kind lady that helped me gave me many extras. 4. My favorite sauce is definitely the spicy mayo. This is a small establishment without seating. I understand why there may be a line at times, but I also understand why it's worth waiting for now. Now that I have a couple favs, I'll definitely be back to try other items. I have a sweet tooth and was hopeful about the desserts, but I didn't love the brownie or cookie. So I'll definitely be back to try others - they have so many options. read more

OBRA HandBakery has been recommended by friends and social media for their potato balls and empanadas so we have been meaning to check it out. Came here with family on a Saturday during the day and it was not crowded. It is located in a plaza with other stores and food spots. Parking is easy and plentiful. The store itself is small and does not have any seats inside, but there are a couple of tables in front. Staff are friendly and helpful with explaining popular flavors and items. We got a variety of empanadas (Cuban, Beef and Potato, Ropa Vieja, and BBQ Pork) and two of each of the potato balls (Chicken and Beef). The empanadas were solid. The filling of the Cuban was flavorful and had good texture with the beans, plantains, and pork. The Beef and Potato was not as flavorful as the others, but the addition of onions and potato makes it hearty. The Ropa Vieja was a little dry, but flavor was good. The sauce in the BBQ Pork was good. The pineapples added a nice sweetness to it. The potato balls were definitely the highlight of our order. They were warm, crispy, and cheesy with a good amount of filling in them. The Beef and chicken were tender and flavorful. Overall, giving OBRA HandBakery a 4/5. Staff are friendly, service is quick, and the potato balls are amazing. The empanadas are okay, but we liked the variety in fillings and flavors. Would recommend to others looking for a good spot for potato balls and would come back to get them again. read more

I've been seeing this on IG and noticed it's not too far from the farmers market. I came by on a Saturday morning. It was quite busy. It's a cute little spot, not a lot of seating which is okay. I got 3 potato balls. Omg so freaking good. I love that they added cheese to it. You get that nice cheese pull. So flavorful. I also got 3 baked beef empenadas. I noticed that they had potatoes and onions. I loved that. I can't wait to go again and try the sweets and drinks. read more
This was my 2nd time visiting Obra and the food is excellent and delicious. I tried an iced latte and it was smooth and tasted refreshing. The lady that helped me wasn't the most helpful in making suggestions or describing things to me, but I was happy with what I got. The Ropa Vieja Empanada and would order that again in a heartbeat. The inside of the bakery is bright and clean, and has a few places to sit and eat right outside. read more

Suggested by a friend and empanadas were yummy! Cappuccino was good too, can taste quality of the coffee beans. Little outdoor patio and some indoor bar type seating. Selection of desserts from cookies to macaroons to cakes. Friendly service and quick. Located in the marina center. I'm a big fan of Obra Bakery for lunch! Their oven-baked empanadas are amazing, and the variety of flavors they offer is so fun to try. They also have frozen empanadas for take-home or party packs, which is perfect if you're craving them later. I've tried a bunch of different ones--BBQ pork, chicken curry, beef, cuban, and of course, ropa vieja (which is my favorite). The staff recommended the ropa vieja, which was packed with flavor! While all the empanadas are delicious, I did find the beef one to be a little more mild compared to the others, but that's totally understandable with how bold the other options are. They also have a great bakery selection! Next on my list to try is the giant cookie cake. And lastly, I always grab an iced matcha latte topped with cinnamon! Came in midday on a Saturday with my spouse and little one to grab a picnic-y snack. We tried: - The Obra Ball w/ Chicken: (see: papa rellena but make it a pollo pyramid). All joking aside, this was delicious and easily the star of our experience. The potato was smooth, the breadcrumb was perfect, and the chicken was SO deliciously tender and very slightly spicy. All the melty cheese settled in the bottom of the pyramid and made for a little cheese bomb at the end, it was so good. - Baked BBQ Pork Empanada: my husband's choice, he really enjoyed it. Sweet, smoky, and savory. The pork filling was very juicy, and the crust was able to keep it all together perfectly. - Nutella and Banana Cigar: yes, it's $7. no, you will have no regrets. If it calls to you, embrace the carpe diem and just indulge. -Tres Leches Latte, Iced: Sweet and strong, just as a cafecito should be. Their espresso packed a nice punch, with the flavor mellowed out by the creaminess of the milk(s). read more

Was in the plaza and decided to give this bakery a try. Inside is small with a display case and there is a high top counter against the back wall for around d 4-5 people to sit at. They have two outdoor tables that seat 4 each. They were pretty busy. I ordered a lentil soups and a seafood empanada( this looks like it was a specialty item that was made for the Easter weekend). I will say that I y took a little longer than I thought it would for a empanada and a soup order (over 10 minutes ). The empanada was good and the lentil soup was a heart he with bits of chopped potatoes. Ample parking since it is in a strip plaza. read more

The potato balls were amazing!!! But everything here is very expensive and the empanadas were a little too dry and thick with the bread. The cookies were good as well and I would go back to try their drinks! It's a very small place I don't even think they have a bathroom but they do have sparse seating. Would definitely come back for more potato balls and wish they weren't as expensive. read more

Been here several times for the Cuban empanadas & sweet treats. Most of the time, I came in the morning around 9-10am so parking is easy. It's a small & cozy store and they do have the outside patio with couple tables and chairs for you to enjoys the foods while it still warm. Service is great so far for me. Easy to order and you just wait 3-5mins or longer (depending on what you ordered or on #s of customers). The foods are generally good to great. Hard not to just eat one since if like 2-3 bites...tasty and well make. Prices can be average to abit tiny pricey for my pov. But I still like it. read more

A great spot for Cuban sweet treats, savory snacks like empanadas or potato balls, or meals like Cuban sandwiches. I tried the tres leches latte and it was really good. If you have a sensitivity to sweet food it may be too sweet. However I enjoyed it. I tried a beef potato ball that had good potato and beef portions, and beef empanada which was delicious. There's so much to try here. Hot tip: parking is difficult here and there's 2 seating options. You'll want to plan to order to go. read more

Tres Leches Latte: very little coffee flavor, so faint for a second I thought I just ordered a glass of milk. Didn't really enjoy this drink. Sounded yummy but fell flat. Vegan empanada: yummy. Love that this place offers a vegan option, definitely flavorful. Chicken Curry empanada: this one was my fav. Super tasty and would order again. Potato Beef Ball/ Potato Chicken Ball: both are super delicious!!! I liked the potato beef ball more than the chicken. Would def recommend the potato beef ball. Chicken empanada and Cuban empanada: I'd pass on these. Service: fast and friendly. There was a line but it went by quickly. Had such a good breakie here at Obra Bakery. They mostly do to-go but they have a couple tables outside if you want to sit and eat. All the baked goods looked amazing and honestly it was hard to choose lol. I tried the empanadas and loved every single one, especially the curry chicken. I feel like this place is a premium version of Porto's at a really affordable price. Love both places, but what I like about this establishment is the grab and go vibe. It always feels like I'm on vacation elsewhere when stepping into the place. I love the Chicken Square Pie. It's honestly the best thing on the menu to me. The service is also fairly decent given how busy it is. Definitely recommend coming here. But fair warning, be prepared to spend. It's hard to pick one or two, you'll want everything. read more
Service was ok, the potato ball was delicious, so many pastries I wanted to try because they looked delicious but the cost here was a bit much. Although they give you free 2 empanadas for every dozen you buy... that dozen will cost you at $60. This place wants to replicate Portos selection a la Long Beach style. But you have to remember that what kept Portos to keep expanding was not the quality although it's great but the affordable cost. They started out small and commanded expansion because the cost kept low made them grow. Something to consider to keep afloat nowadays. Although you can get a good flavor of their potato balls, it will also cost you double the price. The empanadas were also ok, the dough is a bit non flaky. They had more options to choose from but almost at $5 a piece. I would have really tried more but I just can't help thinking the cost was going to double everything if I can get half the price for all from Portos. It's a small space but there are seating available outside but you have to fight for them if you eat here. Would I come back to try the desserts, perhaps not as pricing can be an arm and leg if you buy a lot here. read more

Obra! How I had so much confidence in this place being good. Let's get into the tea of it all. I came as a first timer with my mother because she had requested to come here. I didn't realize I had this place saved in my yelp as well! So it looks like we both have been meaning to try this place out. What was ordered: Ropa Vieja empanada Beef and potato empanada Cuban empanada Breakfast sandwich Chicken potato ball Beef potato ball Iced tres leches latte I ended up personally trying the breakfast sandwich and tres leches latte on site. The breakfast sandwich was not something I would order again. I believe the ketchup they added overpowered any other flavor in the sandwich. It felt more sweet than anything-- I was expecting more savory. The beef and potato empanada was nothing special to me, the dough felt a little dry and old almost. There wasn't much flavor for me to really enjoy it either. It felt like I had more of a potato empanada than anything. The Cuban empanada was amazing! This one I would come back to order again. I absolutely loved it. I added the chipotle mayo to it which complemented it so well. The ropa vieja empanada !??? THIS ONE! This is the one I'd easily buy a dozen of. This was the most flavor packed delicious empanada I've ever had. The meat was tender, had the right amount of salt and seasoning to it. The chimichurri sauce was the best friend to this empanada. Chicken potato ball..? Not a fan. No salt or seasoning, I felt like I was eating fried mashed potatoes. But that beef potato ball?? Oh yeah. That's the one. I would eat 6 easy. No problem. Absolutely beautifully made, don't change the recipe please cause that beef potato ball is gorgeous. The tres leches latte I adjusted to have 2 pumps of sugar free vanilla instead of 3 pumps full sugar vanilla. This I would come back for. It was an absolutely scrumptious coffee! And they put light ice without request so you really get a bang for your buck. Customer service was amazing! The cashier was absolutely the sweetest and patient when deciding on what to order. This is a small place so beware with the limited seating outside and the cramped high stool seating against the wall. read more
