All the cakes are prebaked and packaged, but one can come in to have it decorated with custom lettering while you wait. While we waited, we also ordered two other things that we all love from here: their shanghai style egg rolls (25 pieces for $21) and their miki bihon pancit (medium, enough to feed a family, for $21). We've tried a lot of different version from different places all over, and have come to the conclusion that we like the version at Gemmae's, the best (as long as for my wife, they skip adding patis to the pancit). I visited Gemmae Bake Shop many years ago with my parents. I remember enjoying their Filipino turo-turo lunch. Fast forward to 2025 and Gemmae has become quite popular on social media for their ube treats. I am an ube fan and so definitely made a point to go when I was in the area. Parking was a bit hard because this bake shop is in a fairly small plaza. I got lucky though and found parking in neighborhood street. Stepping in their classic turo-turo offerings are to the right and then to the left is their Filipino bakery offerings. They've got everything from pan de sal to pies. Their ube offerings include ube tres leches, ube tarts, ube cheesecake and ube banana cream pie. The ube banana cream pie looked quite tasty and so I chose to get that. I also got two of their chicken empanadas. The empanadas were $3.30 each and the ube banana cream pie was $4.35 a slice. The chicken empanadas were huge! I was quite surprised. They're deep fried and filled with shredded chicken. I had one for lunch and was quite full and content. I tried the banana cream pie a different day. This banana cream pie had a wonderful graham cracker crust that was topped with ube halaya, ube pastry cream and bananas. The banana flavor was abundant and honestly overpowered the ube. It was still a very good pie though and what I enjoyed the most was the flaky, buttery graham cracker crust. I'd definitely get this pie again; but I do wish the ube flavor would pop out more. Wifey had seen an Instagram post about Gemmae's Filipino pastries, which showed their various ensaymadas, and wanted to visit Gemmae on our recent trip to Los Angeles. Ensaymadas are sweet and savory coiled breads or brioches popular in the Philippines. Besides being a bakery, Gemmae is also a Turo Turo aka point point restaurant where customers can select from a variety of Filipino dishes. 3.5 stars because I thought their pastries and savory breads were delish, but I was disappointed by their Kare Kare dish. When my Life Pahtner told me she wanted to check out Gemmae, I mentioned to her that there used to be a Gemmae Bake Shop in National City, a suburb in San Diego. I read somewhere that Gemmae was a chain of bake shops owned by one lady, but the shops are no longer affiliated and are owned separately. This location can be found in Long Beach and when we visited, we asked one of the employees if they were affiliated with the permanently closed National City location and she said they were not. This Long Beach shop is located within a small strip mall called Willow Plaza. It is located on the corner of Willow Street and Easy Avenue. This plaza is next to Willow Ocean Plaza where you can find Pinay Tess Restaurant. Gemmae is next to Easy Cleaners and Smoke Monkey. There aren't too many parking spaces at this plaza. As you enter the bake shop/Turo Turo restaurant, you're greeted by a display case of cakes and shelves of Filipino pastries. There are three tables/chair settings, distressed laminate flooring, white brick facade wall with potted plants, and large wooden spoons hanging on another wall. The Pinay who served us was friendly and answered our questions respectfully. If you're probably wondering why we would drive all the way to Long Beach to experience Gemmae, it's because Long Beach is the only place where you can purchase the unique ensaymadas they are known for. In the Instagram video my wife watched, it showed ensaymadas with flavors my wife has never seen at other Filipino bakeries we've visited. We both shared their Pandan ensaymada with Ube, which are two flavors that Filipinos are very familiar with. Immediately after I took my first bite, I could tell that the baker takes pride in making quality pastries. This ensaymada was tasty, moist, fresh, the Pandan flavor was pronounced, and they were not stingy with the Ube. We bought one of their Longanisa Pandesal for me to eat later. This morning, I microwaved the longanisa pandesal for my breakfast and I regret not buying more. While my BFF is into sweets, I'm more of a savory connoisseur. That longanisa pandesal was moist, it had plenty of chopped up longanisa, I savored every single bite, and won't make that same mistake of only buying one when we visit again. Gemmae has a hot food line where you can select from a variety of Filipino food entrees. They have the usual suspects, but they only serve sisig on the weekends. What caught my eye right away was their vibrant looking Kare Kare. I ordered a single item combo with white rice and selected Kare Kare. I wanted to try their pancit, but they had run out at 10:30am. Gemmae's Kare Kare was disappointing to me. I was served more fat than beef, so if you decide to order, let the server know that you prefer more beef. Kare Kare has peanut butter as part of the dish, but the peanut butter taste I'm used to was lacking. When I visit again, I want to try their sisig and dinuguan. I'm glad my best friend found the Gemmae Bake Shop Instagram post that featured their pastries and baked goods. Next time, we'll purchase more of their Pandan and Ube ensaymadas and their Longanisa pandesals. I'll pass on their Kare Kare. read more

Hidden gem! Great authentic Filipino bakery. We were in the mood for lumpia and this was the perfect spot to come to. If we didn't know about this from a friend we would have never discovered the place. It's a small place you could easily pass by, in a tiny strip mall with minimal parking. OMG! Me and my daughter had been shopping around for a philipino restaurant that made great lumpia's and pancit for her baby shower. So we decided to go to Gemma's bakery on Willow. It was like we had struck gold. Gemma's is another treasure filled with amazing food that makes you feel like you're in the Philippines. When you go you must try the chicken adobo the broth alone is amazing the chicken was well seasoned and tender it melts in your mouth. The lumpia was crispy and delicious. They also have these amazingly delicious empanadas the crust is flakey and filled with so much goodness and flavor they don't skimp on the amount of flavors and quality of food you get. The prices were right on point. So take a ride to the west side of Long Beach, just over the bridge to Gemma's. Gemma's is on my list of great little treasures in Ling Beach that's well worth the drive and the price to pay for incredible food. I love coming to Gemmae's. It's a small bakery/meal to-go spot located in LB but more towards Wilmington. There's a small parking lot which can get full. I typically go early in the morning on my way to work. It's never busy at this time so I can take my time to look at all the choices for the day. The service is always very friendly and helpful. My go to items include the chicken empanadas, rolls stuffed with corned beef, adobo, or longoniza. The empanadas are so good and very filling. The stuffed rolls are also good although a bit on the bready side. They are a nice quick breakfast or snack item. I also like their soups like sinigang which is a beef soup with a tamarind base broth. Theirs is a bit salty for my liking but nothing some white rice can't remedy lol. I recently tried their pork sigsig and garlic fried rice. The rice is awesome. The sisig was not bad. It's minced pork belly cooked with onions and jalapeños. It was tasty but beware the grease at the bottom! Lol I've tried a few of their baked goods as well. Their ensaymdas are really good. These are soft round sweet breads with butter and shredded cheese on top. They have ube ones as well which are yummy. Speaking of ube, they make ube bread which is a soft bread stuffed with ube. Came to this Filipino bakery in Long Beach and had such a great experience! We tried the pandesal, tres leches ube cake, mamon, and cheese jalapeño shrimp lumpia and everything was amazing! I decided to check this place out after seeing some good reviews online. I always get intimidated when I go to Filipino restaurants/bakeries but the guy behind the counter was so friendly, nice and helpful. He answered all the questions that I had when trying to figure out what was what there, without making me feel dumb for asking. He even hooked it up when we brought up a bag of pandesal he swapped it out for a batch that had just come out of the oven and sold us the fresh ones instead. I loved the plant decoration display that they had sitting on the shelves behind the counter and everything was so well organized and labeled. I have seen a lot of posts about Gemmae on Instagram, especially for their pandesal, so I was eager to come check it out. I went around 7:30 in the morning so there was no wait at all! I totally forgot to reserve an ube banana cream pie online ahead of time (requires 2 day notice) but luckily there was one in the case when I got there! There is a huge array of all types of pastries and Filipino baked goods to the left, and Filipino food on the right. I just needed the pie but thought I couldn't pass on the pandesal, so I picked a longanisa one and a sisig one. I also grabbed a pandan ube ensaymada. When I brought it home we opened it up to eat, but the sisig one was dry. I wonder if they were maybe made the day previously since usually fresh pandesal is soft even if it's not warm anymore. I decided to heat up all of the bread so we can try them all in the best possible form. The longanisa one was much better but still not super soft. The pandan ube was probably the best one! It looked pretty and it was tasty. But the true winner was the ube banana cream pie. It's a unique combo but makes total sense! The actual ube halaya mixed with the bananas and cream was a great mixture of textures. If you don't want a whole pie, they sell them by the slice! Check out the fridge in the left corner of the bakery. Would definitely be back for that pie and to try other items like the ube cheesecake and ube tres leches! Not sure if I'd come here again. I ordered the Miki bihon. While the size of the medium can feed many, it was more like bihon only. I also got mini pandesal. Overall ok but undercooked and requires to be heated up in a toaster to finish baking. There was a piece of bone in the pancit. Not much shrimp, maybe 2-3 shrimps. You get a good amount of food but it's not very good quality and I felt like there was a bit too much seasoning. The parking lot gets busy with the other businesses. There always seems to be construction on the roadway in this area. There isn't too much street parking if the parking is full. Having grown up in the Philippines, I'd like to think I have a very discerning taste when it comes to Filipino food and always comparing the food in the U.S. to how it is made back home. Pandan and Ube ensaymada - ensaïmada/ensaymada is a pastry product from Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain. It is a common cuisine eaten in southwestern Europe, Latin America and the Philippines. Gemmae's version is mixed with pandan (fragrant leaves found in Asian cuisine and tastes like grassy vanilla with a hint of coconut) and ube (Filipino purple yam). 4. Ube and Macapuno ensaymada - macapuno is sweetened coconut and typically eaten as dessert in Philippines Note: The ensaymada flavors here are out of this world and can be eaten for breakfast or as a dessert (can be shared or ...not).
