This is one of those places that earns the word "Experience" instead of 'restaurant' or 'bistro' or 'that one time at that one place.' This... was an experience. I can only describe it chronologically.
The small-ish space is ideal for a cozy nosh or nip. Or both. Yeah... let's say both. Because while their Bourbon and Whisk(e)y selection is monumental, they have spent equal time in crafting a food menu of plates that rivals the best hooch in the place. And they have all manner of Van Winkle on hand as well.
Let's start with the drinks, though. Orphan Barrel. They have four of the six (known) varieties, though I believe they were currently out of Lost Prophet. No matter; I had the Rhetoric 21, since that was new to me personally. Quite the libation.
My next (and last) drink was one of their current cocktail concoctions. Let me say, they have some rather sharp and creative geniuses working the plank! Their entire selection was "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" themed, with offering such as 'Bring Out Your Dead,' and 'My Name is Herbert.' Wish I had the constitution to try them all...
But, I settled on 'What You Do With Witches,' which was equal parts beverage and showmanship. Brought table-side in a sealed mason jar, the top is opened to reveal a healthy waft of wood smoke that permeates your personal bubble, but dissipates quickly enough to not be distracting. The lingering subtlety might go unnoticed even, had you not the experience of enjoying it, and thus be searching for it on your nose later.
Oh, and the drink itself... very not-bad. Highly excellent. I'd say, akin to a classic Sazerac, but more refined and with more depth in aromas and flavors.
I wish I could review the larger 'Plates,' but we were so enthralled with the small plates that we ended up with three of them, which (plus dessert) was more than filling! That is what I think we enjoyed the most here; while the larger entrees have to be tried someday, you can very easily (and for less coin) fill up on amazing vittles instead, such as...
BACON IN A GLASS. Now... while I enjoy bacon... (because I am human)... it takes a bit to impress me on your bacony offerings. And that's not because there isn't quality bacon out there! It's because it's SO dang popular now, that EVERYONE is doing it. Even sugared bacon. Yes, even bourbon-sugared bacon (probably). But... no one else serves it in a glass with a side of peanut butter. And that... was the kicker. Heavenly. To die for. Ordering it next time. Et cetera. It's bacon, but with sweet, and then more salty and savory... think the most refined PB&J&B(acon) sandwich ever, but without the bread.
PIMENTO CHEESE. I've had this dish too from a few places, mainly because I travel a bit to the South as well. I can't say I've been exposed to a lot of bad pimento cheese, but I have had some 'just-okay' versions. This... is not one of those versions. Very well crafted. The crisps are light, crunchy, and just a teensy bit spicy, the perfect complement. Oh, and the house made tomato jam. Oh, and the house made pickled vegetables. Oh so fine.
BEEF SHORT RIB TACOS. I'm not huge into the taco craze, but I have to admit, those little bundles of joy are easy to eat and a great way to taste a lot of different things without getting overfull on just one. Also, one of the main plates we were debating was the cola-braised short rib, so in lieu of having the space for an order, this seemed an excellent consolation prize. Boy howdy, was it! Not only is the beef excessively tender and deliciously seasoned, the taste is that of pure beefy goodness. Succulent, juicy, bold, fresh... and the two salsas plus other toppings made this a certified home run.
WARM DONUTS. Think zeppole, but better! The donuts themselves were actually bigger than zeppoles I've had in NYC, and much more sublime. Impossibly light cake dough is perfectly friend to a delightfully crunchy exterior. Cinnamon sugar adorns the outer shell, while standing by for deployment are a trio of sauces: chocolate, salted caramel, and raspberry melba. While all three are attended to carefully, if I had to pick only one, it would probably be the caramel.
But, if I had to pick two...
Please just trust me on this. Order the bacon-in-a-glass first. Order whatever else you want. But finish with the donuts, having saved your peanut butter from the bacon dish. Then, take the warm donut, pour a bit of raspberry melba sauce on it, then the peanut butter... see where I'm going with this? I have no words. Just thoughts. Like, the best parts of childhood comfort food in one incredible bite. What a way to end a meal.
I mean, an experience.
One final note: the service was beyond reproach. Brinn (sp?) was an amazing server; knowledgeable and super-friendly. The manager stopped on by to check on us, too. Always appreciated. Bravo, everyone. You truly made this an experience instead of just a nice meal. read more
