But it starts with freshly made noodles readily available to buy by pound at Oahu Noodle Factory in Kalihi. This salmon-pink building puts out a plethora of assorted noodles that are listed in the doorway (with a pictorial if you need) such as: Chow Mein, Pancit, Saimin, Chow Fun, along with quite an assortment of wraps. Peek your head in, and you see a light dusting of rice flour on the floor. You're quickly met by someone to take your order (use the job aid at the front; I use my hands to show them approximately how much I want). They disappear and return with a bag(s) of your noodles. I've been coming here for so many years to buy pancit miki for my family. Last time I came here was probably when Bank of Hawaii was open right next door, I'm not a Bankoh customer, but before they closed, customers like me would park there if the security guard wasnt working.  Now the parking is even trickier because you'd have to swing curbside to grab your noodles, or if there's other cars like this afternoon, I parked on a side street a block away.  The lady whose been working here for years isn't the friendliest, but she gets all the orders you need in the right amounts really quickly. She was nice enough to give me a box, and I had to a ask her nicely to borrow her hand cart. The commercially made store bought noodles and wraps don't compare to Oahu Noodle Factory. Their quality of their noodles and wraps are so much better, tastier. The pre-packaged store bought wraps are thin; theirs are thick and won't break for fall apart when you fry them. Parking: They have no parking. There is street parking in front, but only 1-2 cars maximum for quick loading. I only come here on weekends since Bank of Hawaii next door is closed on weekends and people tend to park there to pick up. Good selection of noodle products. Have tried the HK Saimin, HK chow Mein, thick saimin and mundoo pi. Made cake noodles with the saimin. Came out good but would have been better with regular saimin. The chow Mein was ono. Precooked so you just have to wok some stuff and mix in the noodles. The mundoo pi is a little thick for me, but it is good for frying. I like to eat mundoo in soup. read more

This Oahu Noodle Factory has been at this location, along King Street, before Gulick St, for decades! I remember coming here with my grandfather 25 years ago once, and that might've been the last time. This noodle factory isn't convenient at all. There's no parking lot nearby, no parking in front of the store, limited meter stalls nearby, and the store is by itself with nothing else around it. However, the Bank of Hawaii parking lot is right next to it. I don't feel they're sticklers on parking there, but I suppose it'll be okay if you're quick, which you should be. I normally go to Yat Tung Chow in Chinatown because it's convenient and located to other stores I need to shop at, or to Young's Noodle because it's close to the H1 School St and Liliha on and off ramps. I just decided to come here because it's been a super long time, and I've heard some stories about this place that I needed to see for myself. Oahu Noodle Factory offers almost the same exact noodles and wrappers as Yat Tung Chow, the difference is Oahu has Pancit and Chow Funn, and Yat Tung offers more variety on soup noodles and wrappers. A noticeable difference is the price. Oahu is much cheaper than Yat Tung. The boss lady up front seemed friendly and nice. Much better than the other store! I ordered e-mein, and I noticed they were stored in a refrigerator, which is much better than leaving them outside! Or you're all in on a long con and don't want this place to get busier than it already is? Well played, well played. Anywho, my family has been coming here for a long time getting usually getting bundles of fresh saimin and occasionally won ton pei. Noodles are amazingly cheap for being high quality and freshly made, often that day. The same kind of noodles frozen in grocery stores are easily double or triple the price. They also sell a variety of other noodles, such as udon, chow mein, egg noodle, etc. A little embarrassing that despite coming here for well over a decade, we still stick to our basics. There's no real delineation between the cashier and the factory floor in terms of cleanliness and residue from noodle ingredients are pretty much everywhere. But if that is the price to pay for this wildly inexpensive noodle life, so be it. 99% certain it's cash only and parking is terrrrrrrrrrrrible, but if you're quick, customers generally park at the bank next door, run in, buy and run back to their car before the bank staff get fussy. read more

My go to place for mandoo pi! My mom used to get her mandoo pi from another place and I followed her lead but that place closed up shop years ago. I had to try out a few places before discovering Oahu Noodle Factory's mandoo pi and now I will not go anywhere else for the wrappers. The pi has a nice thickness, decent stretch and I have kept the wrappers in the fridge for 5 days they were still fresh. I am always amazed that this teeny, tiny place cranks out a wide variety of wrappers and noodles at high volumes. I will call an hour ahead to make sure they have 15 pounds of the mandoo pi and they have it all ready to go! It is cash only so heads up on that but they are next to a bank. I have not tried anything else there because when I am home for the holidays I am the designated mandoo maker so I am focused on the pi. It's hard not to be humbled when you enter a place like this. I've been coming here for decades and still feel the same way. The people that work here care about tradition. Most of them come from several generations of noodle makers. Not only do they understand the importance of making noodles but they produce noodles to keep their family tradition alive. This is not a glamorous easy life. They begin selling their products at 7am, can you imagine what time they wake up to produce the noodles? Long hard days. You may be asking yourself, why would someone want to endure this type of employment, not make an abundance of money and work this hard? The answer is simple. Noodle makers are passionate about what they do. They know no other lifestyle. They understand their importance in our food community. They value their livelihood. I feel so fortunate to be able to pop into this factory every now and then to pick up noodles that they produce fresh daily. I wish I communicate with them just to ask if I could help them remake their photo board of noodles, which has long since faded. Great place to buy Chow Fun and other kinds of noodles the Chow Funn is $1 a pound you can't go wrong there Great when you want to make your own Chow Funn and the price is way better than the markets and fresher too. Parking is a bit limited but I usually end up parking at the bank as it only takes a minute to get your noodles so you are in and out really fast. Picked up some chow mein and hong kong chow mein today from Oahu Noodles this afternoon. LOCATION: Oahu Noodles is located in Kalihi right next to the Bank of Hawaii. They are in a pink building...not hard to miss. There is limited parking however, we were very lucky and got the parking right in front of the store. PRICES: The prices are cheaper than the store in Chinatown and they also have pictures to help with your selection. All the noodles are made on site and you can see them making it while waiting for your order. "Tahooooo! Tahoooo! Tahooooo!" A very traditional Filipino drink is Taho. It is a street food, a comfort food that makes my heart skip a beat wether it be a cold or sunny day. Street vendors traditionally sell this on foot, while they carry two big aluminum or metal containers and balance them on their shoulders with a metal or wooden rod. These containers usually hold the Taho and Sago needed to create this drink. Can you imagine being a street vendor carrying this on your back only making 5 to 10 pesos per drink? Just the memory of how this warm beverage makes it even more personal everytime I consume it today. Most American Filipinos are used to purchasing Taho at chains like Goldilocks already premade and assembled in Turo Turo or Cafeteria style restaurants which are then microwaved before serving. If you are lucky, you live near a Chinatown that makes this silken tofu fresh and serve them in larger containers for you to bring home for the same price as a regular serving at a chain. Taho is made of a soft silken dessert tofu/warm bean curd, which is topped with a liquefied sugar syrup we call arnibal, and is often times accompanied by sago or better known as tapioca balls. The nice thing about freshly made taho is that if you are diabetic or just like to watch your sugar intake, you can ask them for less syrup. Taho, because of it's soy content is so much healther than milkshakes or soda! ... AND NOW FOR MY REVIEW: Upon a visit to Maunakea Market, my dad insisted that I try the "taho" at the Hometown Noodle Company. Being that I only had a few bites of SPAM for breakfast, I agreed... afterall, it's been a while since I've had really good Taho! I was delighted by the fact that he scooped the soy with a beautiful seafood shell. I don't know what kind, but I thought it was a really nice flare added to the whole experience. He served the Taho separately from the Syrup, which was perfect since my mother is diabetic. As my mom shopped at the fish market, my dad and I decided to dive into the first container... I was delighted! It was so authentic, it brought me back to the taho that I used to eat as a young girl in the Philippines! Goldilocks is usually one of the few places we can eat this back home and I usually prefer not to spend $2.50 there when I can go to TC Pastry or Chinatown and purchase a larger container for $3.00 and bring it home to share with my family. Another thing I loved about their taho is that the soybean is not broken into pieces... I always thought that the 'funnest' part about eating taho is keeping the soy as solid and smooth as possible, because once it breaks down, the brown syrup leaks throughout it and creates an ugly pattern in my cup.. My family has been coming to Oahu Noodle Factory ever since we used to live a couple blocks away over twenty years ago, and now that we live on the leeward side, we still come here! We never took the time to discover other places because this place is as legit as is gets in my eyes. There is a good variety of noodles, but I can't only vouch for the pansit miki :] For my family parties, my Dad always makes a gigantic portion of pansit... I kid you not it's huge. And when we do, he needs fresh noodles, 8 pounds worth. Dry canton noodles doesn't have the same consistency as the fresh noodles when tossing on the wok. Can you tell I'm his sous-chef? lol. Anyways, there is a huge difference in taste...great quality and made fresh. They have noodles divided in plastic bags and that's exactly how they'll give it to you. You don't have to go any further than one step into the factory really. Wait there, and someone will come to you right by the register. The list of noodles is straight ahead taped on the wall. One time I dropped in and there wasn't any noodles left in the fridge. So the lady called for a bag and down it came from the inside balcony, splat on the table in a orderly fashion. Mommy, where do noodles come from? When you want to really find out (and it's not the grocery store), you have got to visit the noodle factory, where noodles are made. There are actually a couple of noodle factories on this island but I had a small window of time and needed to get to one that wasn't too far. Oahu Noodle Factory was open (according to Yelp) and it sounded like they had what I needed. A couple of reviews recommended calling and ordering first. I called and the lady that answered said to just come down. I used Google Maps and street view to check out the location. I saw a small pink building situated all by itself...Ok, looks easy. I check on parking...I know street parking in Kalihi is kind of ridiculous at times. When I got there, sure enough, no street parking but someone had suggested parking at Z***y's across the street. That worked out well. Crossed the street and found a line of people in front of the doorway. It seems that they take your order and fill it right at the doorway. Peering in, I could see all of the machinery and the workers hauling the uncut sheets of noodles, like big rolls of yellow material..cool! A sign listed the various types of noodles available...pansit, saimin, chow mein, udon, etc. and different type of pi..won ton, gau gee, mandoo, etc. Pricing is really cheap! Buying noodles at a retail store is way overpriced compared to buying it direct. The woman in front of me picked up 15 pounds of pancit noodles...now that's a lot! I felt overwhelmed as I only got 5 pounds of chow mein and decided to add on 1 pound of saimin noodles. The saimin comes in bundles. Each bundle is about a little larger than the size of your fist and there are 5 bundles in a pound. When we tried making saimin with those noodles, one bundle makes about a medium sized saimin. The chow mein noodles and the saimin noodles cost me $1.20 per lb., ....now that is cheap! So, if you have a hankering for noodles or have a party coming up, here is a place where you can stock up very cheaply. Try not to overestimate as you can end up with a lot of noodles...and I mean a whole lot of noodles (but I guess you can always freeze them). Parking may be hard if you want to be right in front. It may be a journey for you to downtown Kalihi but it's a great experience if you have not been there before and how can you beat fresh ingredients at a great price? read more

He just shooed my husband like he was a stray cat or something. Jerk. Where else do you stand and make an order or pay for your order when the place is so small? There's no other place to get your noodles than here. Super cheap, noodles already bagged and ready to go. I suggest you call ahead to place an order, like 24 to 48 hours to make sure there's enough. Last time I was here, I was about maybe 10 years old ..came with my Dad to buy 30 lbs of Pancit Miki to make for my birthday party. Fast forward 25 years later, on a rainy stormy Saturday ..Ilocano Pancit Miki soup was calling! I needed wide egg noodles and this place was the first place I thought of. A lot of parking was available next door at Bank of Hawaii.. again, it was storming so the factory didn't have any customers.. It was to my surprise to see the sign that they're open 7 days a week 7am - 4pm, close 3pm on weekend. It's still the same as I remembered when I was 10...small, hot, flour everywhere and Chinese men busy making noodles. A lady was packing up won ton pei and asked nicely what I needed. All I mentioned was.."do u have egg noodles?".. i guess she knew what I was looking for since she didn't asked what shape I was looking for. LOL I had to shuffle my self a couple time as I had to get out of the way of workers . It's tight in there and most of the time you need to stay by the door or outside. The lady sent another man to grab the noodles I asked for from the fridge .. I totally missed the nearly faded pictures of type of noodles they had on the door.. but they did have a little price menu with the type of noodles they have. I prefer to see how they look like especially if I'm not familiar with the types of noodles available. I found what I came for at $2.00 a pound. About 5 small bundles a pound, decided to buy 2lbs..perfect size for a big pot of noodles for the entire fam. Will definitely come back again when fresh noodles are needed! read more
