Eeeek !! Walk past..please ?! I've given O' Toole's a chance one too many times. Almost every season of the year for the past 2 years I have given this place a chance to prove me wrong...unfortunately..it fails yet again !! This place is just another bar, nothing special or unique about it. The service at the bar is really bad. I had to wait almost 15 mins just to get the bartenders attention (and it wasn't a busy night) so if you do go here I would suggest ordering drinks through your waitress (just realized they had that ). O'Toole's continues to be my favorite go-to bar when I'm out on the town with friends. Whether I'm meeting people for a happy hour after work, or getting wild on a weekend, I absolutely love this place. I try to steer clear of the douche-tastic likes of BlackFinn, and the crowd here is just what I'm looking for. It's so casual, and it just always has a positive vibe going on. The bartenders aren't tremendously quick or talented, but it's a bar in Royal Oak - that's pretty much par for the course. I've never eaten here but my friends say the food is spot-on. They have good burger & fry specials one day during the week and they always have a happy hour deal between certain hours. Definitely a great place to mingle with friends :) read more

So, I've only ever been to this Royal Oak hangout on Thursday nights for Big Mug Night where mugs the size of Super big Gulps are filled with beer for 2 bucks! Needless to say, the drunken crowd is quite interesting. In addition to disgustingly cheap beer, there's music, pool, and some video games to entertain. But I bet you won't need those, the huge inebriated crowd will be entertainment enough. Unlike a lot of the other reviews I can't really say I've had a horrible experience, then again I don't frequent this bar, it's just not my kind of bar to hangout at regularly. But as far as Big Mug Night goes, it's A-OK. The bartenders are friendly and efficient, the music, top 40 stuff was fun. All in all this local bar located just off of Washington Avenue is a good choice if you're looking for a more rowdy, college type joint. read more

Eat, Drink, and get roofied. We got roofied here two thanksgivings ago after my girlfriend refused to dance with one of what looked like a douche regular capped head to toe in MSU gear. Not sure how that happens as we only took drinks from the bar. This was the only place we visited that night. We would of went to the cops hadn't we already left and been on the way back home and since the drug has a slow release we didnt recognize what it was. Food is decent here. Beer, if you're not drinking one of the $20 3 liter towers, is a bit pricey. Strange thing about it is a pint of bud light is going to run you as much as a pint of guiness. Wait staff is pretty decent the last time I was in. The shot girls can be a little bit annoying stopping by every couple minutes, especially when one comes right after the other. The music can be a little over bearing sometimes, especially as the night draws on. I think the volume of the music is directly related to the time of day. Bouncers are rude. Waitresses will bring you receipts for drinks you never ordered and demand you pay them. Wouldn't let our friend in because he had distressed jeans. Friends card was charged for multiple transactions even though she bought one beer and only signed one receipt- and the manager said it wasn't her problem. I have never experienced quite what I experienced last night at O'tooles. I was standing talking to friends. A bouncer said something to me. I ask him what he said (he was about 4 feet away) because I couldn't hear him and he literally runs up to my face and says "WHY ARE YOU GETTING IN MY FACE". I continued to act in a calm tone and backed up from him. He then turns to my friend who was minding his own business and shoves him! I wouldn't believe it, if I didn't witness it with my own eyes. We backed up and tried to deescalate the situation. I went to find the manager (which took about 5 minutes and explained to him what happened (again in a calm tone). He said he would look at the tapes. He came back to me literally a minute and half later and then said he looked at the tapes and that he shoved us because he asked us twice to move. Wednesday is half-off boneless wing night, and Thursday is mug night where you see all the hipsters lined up with their 7-Eleven Double Big Gulp mugs looking for cheap beer. Some review I read seem to paint this place as the most foul leaking anus in Royal Oak. It is exactly what it should be: a sports bar. O'Toole's... boy do I have some stuff to say about you. The first time I ever was here was for my best friend's 21st birthday. One of the servers (obviously, after we had already left and gone home) had changed all of our credit card receipt tip amounts. That's seriously unacceptable (not to mention, illegal) especially since we tipped 15% for mediocre service. I swore I would never come back but I decided to give it another chance. I returned with one of my girls and we ordered shots at the bar. I said a mini beer for me and a Washington apple for her. Somehow, three shots land in front of us. I call over the bartender explaining that each of us only wanted one shot and so there should only be two, not three. She gives me a death stare, picks up the third shot, sprays it out from left to right all over the bar in front of us, then threw the shot glass into the tub and stormed off. Seriously? Calm down. I went to O'Tooles yesterday to watch the US vs. England World Cup match with some friends and I had a pretty good time. The bar has a ton of hi-def tvs for one's viewing pleasure and they were all tuned to the game. We ordered this giant container of beer with a spout for $15, that me and my two companions got about 2.5 pints each. It was a great deal! I was really surprised that pretty much everyone at the bar came for the game. We cheered on our team to an admirable tie against a tough rival. I can't comment on the food since we only drank while watching the game, but the food looked good. Your basic bar food. As far as service, I would give it 1.5 stars. The first half of the soccer match was nearly over before a waitress came to take our order. And then throughout the game she constantly pestered us about ordering something else. Normally, I like an attentive server, but it was clear she wanted us to order more after the 5th or so time she asked us so. All in all, I had a great time watching the game and catching up with some friends. I agree with Henry B. that's its a good place to watch a game. The only time I go here is on Thursday nights. Its "Mug Night" which means that you can bring in a vessel of virtually unlimited size and get it filled with either Labatt or Labatt Light for $1.99 per pour. Its decently classy , and has nice waitstaff. They have good food, too. All I've had so far is the langoustine mac and cheese, which came recommended from a friend. It was good, but not the best I've had - probably my third favorite mac and cheese (after Slow's and Cliff Bell's). I am a nursing student at U of M who went out celebrating with fellow classmates, being done with finals and a male customer came and puke by the base of our table.. I had been awake since 530am so I laid my head on the table and the bouncer kicked me out accusing me of being the one who fell asleep and vomited, per another customer, not his own observation by the way. Went there for the first time Sunday to watch the Lions play. Surprised at the negative reviews. Thought it was a really cool bar, plenty of good TVs all over. We are never disappointed :) Beer prices on both domestic and imports are very reasonable and they do offer large portions for shareable type apps like Nachos and Loaded Tater Tots. Went here on a Saturday night with 3 friends at about 1 AM. 2 of us got drinks. We sat a table to talk before heading home for the night. About halfway through our drinks we were approached by a security guard who told us we needed to leave because we were too drunk. I understand that nightlife employees have to use their judgment when assessing a customer's state, but we had each had about 1-2 other drinks at another bar prior to our arrival, so none of us were too drunk nor did we appear to be. We questioned what indicated that we were too drunk but he wouldn't / couldn't and was quite rude about it. We decided to oblige, and began to call our ride home, but he would not even allow us to stay inside to call (it's November and cold out). He was quite literally pushing us out the door as he followed closely behind us saying "let's go! Lets go! Time to go!" The security at the door seemed to even be confused as to why we were being pushed out of the bar. Not sure if they wanted to close early, or were upset that not everyone at the table was drinking / spending money... But whatever the reason, we will not be back. read more

Last night Me and a buddie wanted to go out for a drinks at Otools. It was typically busy and crowed which is expected but few things really crossed the line here. The Door guy kept telling me the place was closed when it wasn't. We asked a second time and then said we could get in but cover was $10. Cover guy wasn't there and we waited but after 5 minutes just just got our drinks. No real complaint about that really. But after sitting on the back patio a man, who worked there, barged in drinking a Corona screaming, EVERYONE NEEDS TO GET THE F*** OUT! He was beyond aggressive and started to get in peoples faces. He got in my face and started screaming and I though he was going to swing the bottle at me so I raised my hands to protect my face until other people who were working there started to pull him away. He was like 5'9 dirty blond i think with a beard. I honestly feared for my safety just for being there. I imagine they Probably don't make the girls feel very safe either. Realistically deserves a 3.5, but I always round up. Food is good - I'd say it's a notch up from your typical bar food. Prices are very competitive, especially for an over-priced downtown Royal Oak bar. The staff is very average. The last two times I've gone I've had to get my own refills from the bar, which is one of my biggest pet peeves. They weren't busy either. O'Tooles is a fantastic place to visit when you go to Royal Oak, and has wonderful ambience and attracts the locals and and for both sexes plenty of people and a healthy mix of different types. It's a great place to meet someone for a conversation or just to get hammered off of one of their very large beer bongs they will deliver table-side. Well it has been many years since I have enjoyed a beer bong, I have yet to see you wanted another bar in Royal Oak especially like they have here. This place is very unique, very loud, and always busy when Royal Oak his visit. As I said above this as a crowd much different than Woodys across the street and fifth avenue next door. They have open seating in the summer which they close off and plastic in the winters and when they need to space. I definitely recommend this buyer to all coming to Royal Oak read more

If it's a bar hopping night, I always hit up O'Tooles, except on Tool night which seems to be Thursday. Lunch Burger special is good and cheap, I would say average beer prices. I don't love this place, but I don't hate it either. However, I kind of find this place disgusting. All of the waitresses and bartenders are pretty. Of course. This is a bar. They have a shot girl who circles the whole place over & over again. They have one pool table, where this group of guys controlled all night. The tables are pretty sticky and gross. I tried really hard to not touch my table or the chairs. The food was pretty mediocre. My friends said they have better hamburgers at their workplace cafeteria. I had the fish and chips. Not sure what type of fish they used or batter, but it def was not cod. Probably, my least favorite fish & chips. The coleslaw was really gross. STAY AWAY FROM THAT. A plus for those onion rings though. Those were addicting. The positive thing is that the have a good selection of beer according to my boyfriend. Lots of beers on drafts. We sat at the bar and the owner ended up buying everyone sitting there a shot of Jameson. That was a kind gesture. It went down hill from there. At one point some loser patron was using the word n****r. I was telling him to not say it again and that I was offended. In the middle some pipsqueek that worked there came up and said to me, my friend and the jerk saying it that if he heard us say it again he'd throw us all out. I tried to explain, he refused to listen. About a half hour later I got up to use the restroom and saw the guy that worked there and approached him to clarify and explain. As I attempted to he over talked me, talked down to me and refused to acknowledge that I was telling the patron to stop using the word. It ended with me walking out and telling him to f*** off as he was adamant that I had some part in the whole thing. I even explained that I have two black kids and I'd never utter that words.
