A cool spot in the summer when they can open the sliding glass windows. Fun place to get drinks with friends. Don't know if I would eat here but I know they have a weekend brunch and a decent menu for a pub/bar. The shot girls in the evening are so annoying and sort of make you want to leave. This used to be a fun spot, less big in size than some neighboring bars. Food is average. Drinks are standard. Most of the bars here have their regular crowds. It seems this and many others have lost the bulk of their crowds. I remember coming here and having to wait outside. I don't see the lines as much anymore. Went to Rock n Rides to go see some live music and enjoy a maskless beautiful day. The band I went to see was the Corktown Popes(great band). So we decided to sit at O'Tooles outside seating and have some beer and a burger. We started with the pretzel sticks. Nice soft inside solid crust and salted perfectly. The cheese sauce was very good. I had three different beers all craft two really good one was ok. Great Lakes lemon Hefeweizen was really good and so was the North Coast Scrimshaw. The ok beer was One Well state of bean. The burger was good cooked to order with the usual condiments with it. The fries were steak fries nice and crisp. Our server Brooklyn was fantastic very patient with us sitting there for a couple of hours watching the bands and drinking some beers. read more

I would say it's a toss up writing this review! You have to know the kinda place you are going to before you are going! There are a ton of bad reviews here and I don't think it's a bad bar! But if you think you are having a nice sit down dinner and drink and show up here you are obviously going to be very disappointed! This place is solely made to drink lots and get drunk, take shots from the shot girls, get bumped into and be in a party crowd of young people! If you are looking for or expecting anything nicer keep moving on down the street! This is a loud bar with a very busy crowd! Bouncers always walking through clearing paths for the drink girls! I've truthfully never even sat down while being here! So that being said it is hard to sometimes get a drink unless you push yourself to the bar. This is a fun bar but definitely gets packed anytime there is an event in Royal Oak. The food is good, they did a menu revamp not too long ago. The steak bites are always a good go to! On the weekends they have shot girls walking around as well. There's a running club that meets at this place and when they're done, they bring their sweaty, smelly selves into the bar and stand in a line at the bar talking so loudly you can't hear yourself think. How do I begin to review O'Tooles? You have to appreciate O'Toole's for not pretending to be more than what it is. It's an Irish pub in Royal Oak, but it's known less for low key hanging out and enjoying a few beers, and more for cheap alcohol and getting trashed with a combination of everyone you've met in Michigan and total strangers. Their SoCo lime shot is the cheapest shot (under $3 or $4 if I remember correctly) and it's a fan favorite here. They also tend to make drinks on the strong side, so be careful! O'Toole's has become a staple part of a standard night of going out in Royal Oak. Because of the cheap prices on drinks, it's a solid place to meet up with friends and knock back a few before heading out to other bars/ clubs. Though it's a good place to meet up with your friends, if you arrive around peak hours, you'll have a bad time finding a table. If you do find a table, you'll most likely have groups of people trying to poach it every time you get up for whatever reason. Thursday night is $2 mug night at O'Toole's, which means you can get a $2 pour of Lebatt or Labatt Blue or Labatt Blue Light in a mug of your choice. They do have a requirement that the mug has to have a handle, and that the mug cannot have a spout (like a blender). If you don't feel like bringing a mug from home, O'Toole's will sell you a plastic O'Toole's branded one for $5. Overall, I'd say the O'Toole's experience is something that you have to try if you're going out in Royal Oak. It's not for everyone, but going to O'Toole's is always an adventure! read more

Gross, gross, gross. I remembered this place from years ago. We were in town and were hungry and needed a drink, so we figured why not. We stopped in and the place smelled of old stale grease. Bad sign. We could not get a wait person to come over to our table. We were totally ignored. The vibe was weird and the more I looked around, the more unkempt and dirty the bar looked. It needs a major upgrade and the employees were either rude or just absent minded. Again, the pungent smell of old grease permeated the building. The floors were sticky (dry spilled beer, I think) and there was food under a table nearby. We got up and left. I doubt the absent minded staff noticed. They really do need to do a deeper cleaning of this place and retrain the staff. read more

Went out with some friends last night. Paid everyone's cover to get in. Ordered and paid for first round of drinks and next thing I know there is bouncers in our face yelling you got to go taking our freshly poored and paid for drinks. The bouncers, the staff, the tenders, and especially the management are the least ethical, reasonable and kind people in likely all of royal oak. Stay far away from OTooles unless you are prepared to lose your cover, your drinks, your fun, and have your night ruined. Literally, 5th Ave (way better food, service and staff) and HopCat are around the corner or next door. Go there, you'll be most thankful you did. read more

It's not good. I wish that I could say that it is, but it most certainly isn't. My server, Ashley, was just fine, and did a good job getting my order right and getting my food to me. The second star is completely due to her good service level. Otherwise? Yeah, the place is a loss in my opinion. The food is *all* from-frozen junk that doesn't even try to act fresh and yummy. It'll feed you, yes, and it shouldn't make you sick, but of the three things I ordered tonight, the very best thing was the side salad, and it was, indeed, actually made of fresh, good ingredients. The burger? The onion rings that came on the burger? The wings? All from frozen, and they taste that way. It's really pretty sad, considering that it isn't all that hard to do bar basics well. As for cleanliness, it's definitely a miss. The floor in that place is far, far stickier than most crappy movie theaters I've been to, and it's just plain gross. You really can't ignore it, either. I will say that their bathroom was definitely up to snuff, stocked with paper, and everything worked correctly. Look: it's a *bar*, and it's a pretty poor excuse for one. It's not trying to be anything else, I guess, and I suppose that this type of joint appeals to a certain "doesn't give a crap" crowd. Folks: this place is for you...it's all yours. O'Tooles seems to be for tools as the name of the bar so accurately suggests. O'Tooles attracts a crowd of mainly douches and hos, which seems consistent with most Royal Oak bars. If you're 21-25 and are into scantily clad baby prostitutes and the typical "bros" type of dudes, then definitely stop in on a Thursday night for their mug night. Bring a mug or purchase one of theirs and have it filled with cheap beer for just $2 all night, with shot specials going on as well. I unfortunately knew a guy who had dozens of their mugs from mug night lining his kitchen of his Royal Oak apartment. Most people don't remember to bring back their mug to refill it so you can easily purchase a new one. It gets super busy and packed like a sardine can on Thursday nights and thus extremely loud. Also expect a line out the door and a long line at the bar, and a struggle to find a seat. I've been here for mug night before and it's not really my scene but we did have a good time when we stopped in O'Tooles for the Saint Practice Day Pub Crawl. It was well decorated for St. Patty's Day and had green beer, Guinness, green JELLO shots, and a green tea shot special. Most bars on the St Practice Day Pub crawl surprisingly didn't really have any St Patty's Day themed drinks or anything special for the occasion so it was nice that O'Tooles offered that. I imagine it's a good stop for St. Patty's Day but otherwise, I don't see myself rushing back. It's more like one to two stars for me but I realize if you're college aged and looking for an obnoxious loud drunken night out, this place might be exactly what you're looking for. read more

This place is a 5/5 for what it is. It's downtown Royal Oak's signature whole in the wall bar. Beers, food, darts....with a really nice setting in my opinion. The cocktails are great too! The music was so loud that we could not hear each other speak, even when we leaned over and spoke into each other's ear. We also didn't get service- we had to stop a young lady who was friendly and apologetic as the server that had our section was no where to be found. She brought us our first round and cashed us out, but it seemed only parties of four or more were getting any attention from the staff. Be aware of roofied drinks here. Please party responsibly at this place. Make sure to have someone in your group that stays sober and can protect if you anything happens. My friend was roofied at this bar last night and ended up in the hospital. She had two shots directly from the bartender at the bar and one shot from a shot girl that was walking around with test tube shots. Came here over the past weekend for my friends birthday and we all had a blast!!! It was packed so getting drinks was kinda difficult because the amount of people but we didn't mind.
