I almost never do this, but I'm just so shocked at the service that I received tonight that I have to say something. The bartender was absolutely the worst customer service I have received in a very long time. She had no business being there. The bartender tonight, had cartoon playing on the TV, with sound on. She was dressed for Christmas. We asked for Johnnie Walker, she starts pouring a single shot neat, NEVER asked what we actually wanted to drink. We asked for a food menu, never asked if we wanted food. Proceeds to give me my total and stand there till I handed over the money. We got up and left half way through my drink and she couldn't have cared less, she didn't say bye, nothing. She did not want to be there, and really should not have been working. Good dive pub, draught isn't great if your looking for a pint. Grub was pretty good, we got the Pulled Pork Sammy on special for $5 and it came with chips. Scotty behind the bar was a nice fella, gave us visitors a few tips.. That have a patio out the back of you want a smoke without standing in traffic. I need a good pint though, for that reason I'll give it a 3. 2 for 1 pints on Wednesday would be great if they had some gas in the pint. read more

So I was told if you come here on your birthday they give you wings for however many years old you are (with a few minor stipulations) so I recently visited for my birthday and brought my parents (both of whom are disabled) we were first met with an obstacle when we found the place is NOT handicap accessible. However that did not deter Tim, their amazing barkeep. He ran right out and the two of of power lifted my dad into the building. The place looks like any old Irish pub, but the service was amazing, not only did Tim help us into the bar, he was quick and on the spot with servics. Their wings are smoked then fried which was delicious and they have a plethora of sauces to choose from. We had a great time and the food was amazing, Tim recommended the honey gold and he did NOT disappoint! I got all my wings and an awesome birthday to remember. I cant wait to go back! read more

I stopped into this cute pub for a chariety event. The pub was allowing voluntees from Operation Freedom Ride, a local animal rescue, to bartend behind their smaller bar to raise money for their rescue. They even allowed some of the adoptable dogs inside to walk around and introduce themselves to the people drinking. The area itself was very clean and welcoming, not like other grimmy Rochester bars. I could smell bar food but did not get to try anything. The bar staff was so friendly and sweet, especially to the volunteers and dogs from OFR. read more

Buy one get one drink specials throughout the week, friendly bartenders, dart boards, pool tables and a casual laid back atmosphere, sign me up. Came here with some friends to celebrate the end of the semester and we had a great time. The drinks were cheap and strong, the clientele was fun, the food I didn't try, but my friends did and it looked awesome. We hung out, ate popcorn and played darts. It's definitely a divey feel, super casual, which I liked. The bathrooms are on the scary side, but what can you expect in a place like this. I could definitely see myself coming here on week nights to wind down with some cheap beer and good company. read more

Probably one of two bars I frequent the most---that in itself says a lot. This bar sort of has it all---touchtunes, popcorn machine, great drink specials, good food, tvs, quickdraw, 3 dart boards, a dedicated room to 2 pool tables and a change machine, and let's not forget--some awesome bartenders. This is a dark pub loosely separated into four main areas with the entrance starting you in the main bar area which eventually leads out to a large outdoor patio (closes at 11 for noise), a middle section which hosts several tables for seating and a secondary bar, and the last section hosting sort of the "game room". Two things I want to note that are particular to this bar: Chameleons---people constantly ask first: what is it? Basically a long island with blue curacao with a can of redbull dunked in the top designed as more or less a chug that may in fact get you hammered...and second: Why the heck do you drink this? see "first". Other bars in town have attempted to copy this, but no where else have I found a better version, so if you intend to try this drink/shot, I implore you to have it here first. Be aware, however, with such a formidable drink comes a formidable price tag ($14?). The second thing I wanted to mention was their chicken wings. They certainly have a decently sized menu for a bar, but the hot sauce they make for their chicken wings might certainly be the best hot sauce I've ever had in the area. It's quite possible an entire container of butter might be used in making just my batch of the sauce---the creaminess, the consistency of the sauce, the flavor profile with just the right spiciness---whatever they're doing they're doing it right so please give this a try. read more

O'Cals has a lot of space to move around in, a few separate areas, pool tables, dart boards (in a different space from the bars) and tall tables in the front windows. There is also a back deck that you can enjoy in the summer (or on any warm day). The prices are in line with a normal type bar in Rochester. The crowd can be a little college bro type but I feel that has actually improved as the bros have moved to places like Dragonfly, MacGreggors, etc lately. I had been meaning to come back to sample the smoked wings since popping in and discovering BOGO Wednesday night a few weeks ago. Another random Wednesday after a band concert at the High School seemed the perfect opportunity. The menu contains quite a few smoked items, including pulled pork and brisket. While a little hesitant to try barbeque at an otherwise run of the mill college bar masquerading as an Irish Pub, my curiosity got the best of me. Ordered a Smithwick's for my wife and Southern Tier IPA for me...of course she immediately decides she likes mine better, so I am stuck with Smithwick's, and it's not good...never really been a fan, and it just tasted stale and flat to me. Anyway on to the wings. They are smoked for several hours and then finished in the fryer. There are about a dozen flavor combinations. Since my wife had eaten dinner earlier and said she would probably only have one, I went with the ghost hot. Now I foolishly assumed the "ghost" referred to the ghost chile, an extremely hot pepper that can really inflict some carnage, depending on the mode of delivery. After placing the order, I was a bit apprehensive that the heat might overpower the smoke flavor, but as it turns out, there was nothing to fear. First the bad news, the wings came out glistening with sauce...the dreaded "shaken in a bowl right before serving" method...and they appeared to have been rushed out of the fryer probably five minutes early, before achieving that nirvana crisp cloak, which is a hallmark of the all the better wing joints in town. Also, they had no real heat...I'd peg them around a mild to medium...this was a bit disappointing. While relieved there was no ghost chile baseball bat to smash me in the mouth, I had hoped to at least experience hints of that power. Ok, now for the good news... the smoker really kicked these wings back up to the repeat category...not only did the meat have a great smoky flavor, but the smoking process had rendered them quite tender, making for a really delicious, unusual wing experience. And while not a big fan of lots of sauce, this sauce was really tasty...just could have been a tad spicier. Next time I will ask for extra crispy, but these babies are definitely worth a return trip. Normally the law of diminishing returns begins to kick in by about the 8th wing, but I managed to scarf down 14 of these tender, smoky little wonders with little hesitation. The beer selection, still not so great, Southern Tier IPA, Magic Hat Rye IPA, and Guinness being the only standouts among a stable of forgettable standard domestics and that substandard Smithwick's. We were most definitely the "parents" among children in this place, but its all good, enjoy the beer pong (played with cups of water?...how offensive), grab some ghost wings, and an IPA 2fer, and enjoy the experience. read more

This is a great place to hit up on the weekend if you're looking for the busy bar scene. They have a decent size bar as well as a smaller, limited bar for the overflow. It gets packed so it can be tough to play pool (they have 2 tables). I always have a good time here. They have a big deck in the back which is rare in this part of the city. O'callaghans is one of my favorite bars on Monroe avenue to hang out in. They have amazing food, that's not your average "bar food". (Best wings in Rochester!) I've had their food a few times. The first time I got those free birthday wings, I got buffalo and garlic and they were awesome. (Btw, they no longer do this SAME promotion sadly) The other day I picked up food, I got two orders of wings and some fries. My bf ran in to grab the food and had to wait, there was no line, the bartender was just talking to some women (who weren't ordering anything) and appeared to be drunk. We live about a 2 minute drive away, but the food was cold. The fries, other than being soggy and cold, actually had great flavor. The wings on the other hand were awful. They were all burnt, one batch more than the other. I'm not talking some char which is good, but unpalatable BURNT. The garlic buffalo were oddly spicy for a medium, and I'm good with spice. They were small wings and almost the entire batch wer flats. This was the extremely burnt batch. The honey habanero was surprisingly a dry rub. They were not labeled on the menu as such, when other wings were. Initially I thought it was a mistake. I thought they had given me the Cajun dry rub (still do tbh) and they were INCREDIBLY salty. We called the bar and a guy answered, also obviously drunk, and assured us that the honey habanero is supposed to be SUPER SALTY I had to just laugh at that point. He said there wasn't really anything he could do. I spent a lot of money on that food, and at at that bar in general and I won't be back for food or drinks. Oh well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ read more

So disappointed in O'Cals. I have been a loyal customer for 3 years and I must say I will never be returning unless they have a total turnaround. I have always appreciated the atmosphere, quality of people, service and food and beverage specials. The last 6 months or so have really been a downward spiral for the business. The "50cent" wing special is now a "65cent" special without any reason as to the change or explanation to those who have been coming for years. This is the exact definition of nickel & diming their customers (an extra nickel & dime for a chicken wing). The bartender will not approach you or offer any recommendations. It's like you have to go to them and interrupt the conversation they are having with a buddy of theirs just to place your order or cash out. When they do listen, it's like you are the most inconvenient person they have encountered. The bar has 11 people in it. Do you work for tips or not? Well the beer on special is always flat so my assumption would be, No. I get that O'Cals finally refinished a couple of sore spots that have been neglected for years, like the hallway to the kitchen and bathrooms without doors. But really, jack up the prices on a night you're trying to pick up business? I have worked in restaurants and bars for 15 years and if I had any party in O'Cals management I would actually be at the bar to notice the serious neglect the staff provides the customers. If the bartender is the manager... Well I guess this will all fall on deaf ears. Very disappointed in what was once my favorite bar in Rochester. read more

UPDATE: The .50 cent wing special is now a .65 wing special. (Their website still hasn't been updated.) Price increases are always a bummer but this price is still pretty good and is on par with other local places' deals. (Ex. Jeremiah's Tavern does 10 wings for $6.50.) read more

The bartenders do they best they can to get drinks on busy nights. I like how when you open a tab they do not require you to leave your card with them, as I always forget it. This is from a purely bar experience. The Long Island Iced Tea was described as disgusting by both friends who tried them. They were $8.50 a piece (I am not sure if that is the average price around here..). It looked run down and just overall shabby. But I did enjoy the music and the 80 year old lady with oversized "celebration" sunglasses on so 2 stars it is. read more

Let me start by saying that I have always been a regular patron on Monday nights for their wing night. I never really go there to drink at night, but on Mondays, O'Cals was my go to wing destination. 3 dart boards, lots of space, decent draft selection, $.50 wings and an overall good atmosphere. Then everything changed, and my life was turned upside down. I went there a couple of Mondays ago, and to my dismay, the giant chalkboard with the daily specials said that the wings were $.65 each. A part of me honestly died that cold February day. I love their wings, but $.65 on wing night is unacceptable. They literally "nickled and dimed" their wings. A crime against god and man has been committed. Obviously I had to leave. There are plenty of other bars that have $.50 wings on Monday, and I will be going elsewhere until I hear that they have repented for their sins and reverted to the tried and true $.50 wing special on Monday night. Also, the new (within the past 6 months) bartender needs to work on his bed side manner a bit, as has been mentioned in other reviews. The old guy was really chill and always greeted us and knew what we would be getting, split the bill for us ahead of time, etc. The new guy is very cold and makes you feel like you are inconveniencing him. He also told us that the computer system made it very hard to split the bill, even though we were there 1 week prior and the other bartender did it no problem. I thank the owners and employees of O'Cals for the many enjoyable Monday's I have spent there. I honestly hope that things turn around and I can once again give them my money. read more
