Grilled skirt steak with gireumjang sesame oil sauce.

This is one of my favorite Korean restaurants. Wide variety of menu items and authentic recipes keep me coming back. One simple dish that isn't available everywhere is the skirt steak with gireumjang is so good. I always say it makes me so happy.

Lunch in Manoa, Honolulu, Hawaii... I saw a friend check in on her Yelp app here in Manoa Marketplace. I didn't know where O-Bok Korean Restaurant was, so I asked a different friend... LOL! She said her family went there often - in the past - when there was a different owner. I had no idea. O-Bok was between the US Post Office and Lady Elaine. We easily found a parking space in the shared, free lot. Inside, this restaurant has an old school vibe with some of the vinyl benches' rips taped up. Our server had us sit at one of the booths with a taped up bench... Haha! That's ok... I ordered the cold noodles. I liked the chewy texture. I should have used the scissors that were provided, but nah... I added some vinegar to the broth for a change up. It was refreshing and light. The half of a hard boiled egg was alright. This was a casual, reliable, straightforward place for local style Korean food. We appreciated the four included banchan: broccoli, kimchi, japchae (delicious), and bean sprouts! The ice cold water had a slight touch of lemon in it! Thank you!

I tried O-Bok again...getting the Bulgogi Plate for takeaway. Eatery was empty and my request was given in 8 minutes. Bulogogi was well seasoned. Portion was reasonable and commensurate with the price. Banchan: potatoes in syrup, kim chi ( local standards if just a bit spicy ), two broccoli spears and Jap Chae...plain. Solid Korean takeout fare.

A Korean food staple in Manoa Marketplace, O-Bok has been around for a good stretch of time. It is now located by Lady Elaine and across/behind the elevators to the 2nd floor of the marketplace. While it is a bit tucked into the marketplace, it is worth looking for! There is seating inside with booths and a counter towards the back of the restaurant. The lights are low and the restaurant feels like a more old school Korean spot. The menu is not overbearing and offers solid options such as juns, specials, soups, barbecue, and more. There is also some seating outside around the marketplace, should you want to take your food and eat outside. We usually get the meat jun, bibimbap, and combo set b. The service is always efficient and usually they are pretty nice. The prices are not bad for the portions, which are pretty big. They usually last us a couple of meals. Especially the combo. However, the bibimbap portion is a bit small. Otherwise, we enjoy coming to O-Bok and will be back!

We've been to O-Bok to dine in pre-pandemic and for takeout a couple of times since. However, we don't come here enough, so it took a minute to realize that even though the physical space looks the same (perhaps the wallpaper was updated?) and new menus were made and put up, the people working are different. I presume ownership has changed hands, which also means ingredients, taste, portion, and prices have changed. O-Bok has always been somewhat pricier than other local Korean eateries, in my opinion. The prices on the menu didn't seem to have changed much, but the portions seem are a bit smaller--only one scoop of rice for each plate, and the tonkatsu plate doesn't come with rice (but the soondubu does). Not a deal breaker for me but the hubs was surprised. The banchans portions were also smaller. However, the man owner who waited on us (while wife cooked) asked if we wanted more rice and/or banchans. For two adults and a growing teenage boy, we ordered a combo plate, bulgogi plate, tonkatsu plate, seafood pancake, and soondubu. The plan was to take home what's lefto for my lunch but we finished everything! The husband kept commenting on how small his combo was, but his spicy pork and fish jun looked freshly made. My bulgogi plate came with a lot of meat, tasty but kind of dry. There were two pieces of thin crispy tonkatsu smothered in a mushroom (I think) gravy. The seafood pancake was the standard size but slightly thicker but still crispy and yummy. The soondubu was milder than expected. Total bill came to just under $100 before tax and gratuity. Food came out quick though, given there's only one cook! There were a few takeout orders and some more people came to dine in after us.

This was a 'full' order of miso soup. Still hungry after.

A picture tells a thousand words. I'll leave my 2 pictures of the miso soup and the banchan that comes with it..... for $21!

We ordered through a food delivery app, but the food arrived quickly and the hand off was smooth. I love being able to eat from O-bok at home, comfy, cozy, and relaxed. They give good portions and the kalbi was tasty. Between the kimchi pancake and the kalbi, we had enough for 3 people to eat.

We went with the Prix Fixe Menu of the 9 courses, for $70 per person. First we were given the banchans. They have A LOT and I love banchans so it was a great start to the meal. I wonder if you could get refills on the banchans like many other KBBQ spots... I didn't get the chance to find out as I was STUFFED by the end of my meal. The steamed egg also came fairly fast, they offered to serve it for us which we took up on that offer. Then we also received the kimchi pancake. Here is what I'd note, I am a bit confused on the portion sizes. As the prix fixe menu is per person, shouldn't the dishes and servings per person? Like why would the kimchi pancake be one and shared between two? As well as the egg? We then got all of the various cuts of the meats. Everything was good and quite enjoyable. We also had a choice between soup (soybean or tofu) and cold noodles (reg or spicy). We both chose the spicy cold noodles. It was very good and a refreshing side to pair with the KBBQ. We were honestly stuffed by the end of our meal and enjoyed it all. Despite my slight concern/confusion regarding the serving/pricing, I would possibly come back. Although I usually go for an AYCE kbbq spot as it is definitely more worth it value wise.

The restaurant gives off Korean pub vibes, decently sized, and best suited for smaller groups. We ordered a variety of food: chicken combo, kimbap, bulgogi, bossam, and spicy rice cakes. We are extremely disappointed with our recent experience…read more We've been loyal customers and typically eat here twice a week whenever we're on assignment on the island in the last five years. We have also left two previous positive reviews because we've genuinely enjoyed the food and wanted to support this small business. Earlier this week, we ordered the bulgogi for our kids, but the meat was too chewy and tough making it inedible. Wanting to give the restaurant the benefit of the doubt, we ordered the bulgogi again the following day and even requested it be cooked well done. Unfortunately, it had the same too chewy and tough texture, and again, could not be eaten. After feeding the kids something else, bathing them, and putting them to bed, I called the restaurant around 10:00 p.m., but they had already closed. I called the next day, and the owner (a lady with glasses) returned my call. Instead of listening to my concerns, she repeatedly interrupted me and spoke in a passive-aggressive, dismissive manner. I was on speakerphone with four other adults in the car, and everyone commented on how unhelpful and condescending the conversation felt. I explained that I wasn't calling simply to complain - I wanted to share feedback because we genuinely care about the restaurant and have supported it for a long time. I even mentioned that I had previously provided constructive feedback about the takeout bowls, which the restaurant later improved. Before I could finish, she cut me off and said, "We're not talking about the to-go bowls right now, are we? We're talking about your bulgogi." She insisted that if I wanted a refund, I needed to return to the restaurant in person, and that if something was wrong in the future, I should come back immediately so they could remake it. Unfortunately, that's simply not realistic for us. We're staying in a hotel with two young children, and the restaurant is about 40 minutes away. By the time we discovered the problem, got the kids settled, and called, making another round trip would have meant roughly 80 minutes of additional driving with tired, hungry children. I understand that mistakes happen, and I wasn't expecting perfection. What disappointed me most was how the concern was handled. This business does not value customer feedback and will never first listen respectfully, even from repeat customers who have consistently supported and recommended them. Sadly, based on this experience with both the food quality and the customer service, we won't be returning.

The premium AYCE option is around $60 per person, which would be reasonable if the quality matched the price. Unfortunately, it doesn't. We're from the Bay Area and have been to countless Korean BBQ restaurants with significantly better meat quality for the same price or less. To make matters worse, even at the highest-priced AYCE tier, fountain drinks aren't included. What really left a bad impression was the automatic 20% gratuity. Our group consisted of two separate parties of three people each. We were seated together at one large table with two grills, but we had separate bills, ordered different AYCE meats option, didn't share food, and made that CLEAR before ordering. The menu states that automatic gratuity applies to parties of five or more, yet we were still charged because we happened to sit together. Had we known this was their policy, we would have chosen another restaurant or sat at different areas of the restaurant. The reason I'm giving two stars instead of one is because our servers were friendly, patient, and knowledgeable. They answered all of our questions about the menu and provided excellent service throughout the meal. Unfortunately, when we brought the gratuity issue to the manager, he insisted we were one large party despite us being separate parties with separate orders and separate checks. At the end of the day, the only difference was that we happened to be sitting at the same table.
