I havent been to Nuri's in years but when i lived in the hood they were a godsend! Good prices and the people who own it are amazing. I'm over 6' tall and get a lot of things altered. They have done everything from jeans to dresses for me with very good results. I actually took a very expensive gown there once to have them fix it after the people at neiman marcus f'd it up. Once they gave me the wrong pants but they called me to let me know and cleaned them for free the next time.. really nice people! read more

i never actually had any work done here so nuri may well be a fine tailor. however, this shop is so disorganized and un-automated that i made two trips up there only to find my work unfinished. i dropped off three pairs of pants for tailoring with a promised return date a few weeks later. i went in to pick up the pants and was told that they weren't done because the tailor had been sick. things happen, i understand, but i'd have preferred a call if my order wasn't done. that's not possible here because they have no idea what's there, when it should be done, when it arrived, etc. it took them 15 minutes to find my pants and tell me that they were not done. so i left and they promised me that they would be ready in one more week. fast forward to today. i foolishly make another trip up there and again, not a stich placed into them. i took them back. three weeks in the shop and nothing done. again, i understand that people get sick and that this is a small shop, but at least run a customer friendly business. i took time out of my day twice to go there and left disappointed both times. by the looks of the reviews here people have had great luck with nuri's. i did not and i will not be back to try again. read more

I had read great reviews of this place, and needed a new tailor after moving. I frequented an excellent tailor in Evanston for years for a number of suits. I brought a tuxedo in for a standard tailoring. I showed Nuri how I wanted my pants brought in. When I came back, the waist of the pants was unfortunately far too tight. I know how a new customer might seem by asking for things to be redone, and I had never asked for a "redo" by any tailor, but I really needed the pants done right. He initially protested, saying the tuxedo shirt would not add any extra thickness, but said he'd fix them. When I returned, they were now back to square one. Again, I was reluctant to ask for these to be changed one more time, but I decided to ask. He and his wife took only moments to decide to become openly rude. He told me that the tuxedo shirt would fill it out (!) I reminded him he told me otherwise. He pointed to his elastic band on his sweatpants and said "see I could do this to my pants too," and I pointed that my tuxedo pants lacked such an elastic band. Then he said that I didn't know what I wanted and "I don't need a customer like you." Also, "maybe you never owned a suit before." So, talking out of both sides of your mouth, failing to deliver a promised product, and insulting your customer? Pass. read more

I was referred to Nuris by one of my good friends last June, because I needed some quick alterations done on a bridesmaids dress. They did an amazing job, in such a short notice!!! I recently took in one of my jackets, because the zipper was broken and jeans that needed to be hemmed. They did another amazing job and fixed my zipper for only $15! My jeans came out perfect too, I was very pleased with their work! They always do a phenomenal job! The family vibe inside is nice. Their very personable people and genuinely care about getting to know you and making you happy with their work! I will definitely keep coming back, and referring all of my friends! The only downfall is they don't accept debit cards. read more

They do a great job and are very quick and affordable! They fixed a shirt that I probably should have thrown out years ago but refuse to for sentimental reasons. The sleeve was torn pretty bad, but they sewed it up so well that you can't even tell! They have also fixed a ripped coat lining, hemmed jeans and altered dresses for me - perfect job every time! This man is a magician when it comes to custom tailoring. I had to get a few suits and pants tailored after losing a lot of weight. He was able to accommodate me in about a week and the suits fit much better than they ever did before. It made me realize how poorly they were tailored before. I was very optimistic after my first meeting with the tailor at Nuri's. I brought him two button-ups, one pique polo and one pair of shorts for alterations, explaining that I'd recently lost a lot of weight and needed the torso portion of each shirt taken in a bit and to have the "sag" taken out of the shorts. I made a point of noting a previous negative tailoring experience in which someone adjusted the chest area of my shirts but didn't touch the lower torso part, leaving a baggy bell shape. He assured me that he understood what I wanted. The tailor pinned the shirts and explained that while he did not normally perform tapering on shorts, he'd try it for me. A few days later I went to pick up my garments, and found that the lower torso of the shirts had been taken in somewhat tighter than they were pinned, and the upper part of each shirt was left untouched and disproportionately baggy. The shorts turned out fine and I commended him for his work. However, when I asked if he could taper the chest area of each shirt as I'd initially requested, both he and his wife got hysterically defensive and tried to intimidate me out of asking for adjustments. I demonstrated how badly the garments fit in their current state, and after 5+ minutes of arguing, he agreed to adjust the two button-ups but warned that if they were too tight, it wasn't his problem. As for the polo, it was an older garment and I decided it wasn't worth fighting over. So, several days later I went to pick up my shirts, and they were tapered correctly. I am happy with the outcome on the button-ups and shorts, but lament the loss of a polo and arguments I had to go through to get decent service. Even with the drama aside, the shirts weren't taken in to the specs they were pinned at, and the quality of the stitching wasn't great. Two stars for wearable garments in the end, but I can't recommend them because of the poor service I received. read more

I've been using Nuri for cleaning and tailoring since I moved to the neighborhood 17 years ago. Even when I moved out of the neighborhood for a few years, I still went the extra distance to take my stuff to Nuri. Now I'm back within walking distance and as happy as I ever was. In defense of some of the posts about slow or no results tailoring, I notice that they were mostly in the same time period when Mr. Nuri, the tailor, was having surgery. I'm happy to report he's back now and in good health again so bring your stuff in for alterations with confidence. read more

Getting excited and worked up about dry cleaning and clothing alteration is not my type of thing, but I can easily say that after a bit of searching, this is the best cleaners I have found in the city. Owners are friendly and welcoming; you feel like they sincerely care about you. They do excellent work at a very reasonable charge. Five more stars for Nuri's - they are the only business I patronize for alternations. I recently broke a zipper on my favorite fleece and took it to Nuri's expecting to have the entire zipper replaced. In fewer than 5 minutes, the owner rifled through a box of spare zipper parts, found one that would fit my fleece, and did some magic to get it all repaired and good as new again! I was floored. $6 and I have my favorite fleece back. Love Nuri's! read more

I had a pair of Joe's Straight Leg Jeans that needed altering...a good few inches because I am short! This little shop did an amazing job. They far surpassed my expectations and my jeans turned out great! They kept the original hem for me and there's no buckling at the bottom whatsoever like I've experienced with other jeans that I've had taken up. Turnaround time is pretty quick. I wasn't in a rush and had my jeans back in 5 days. Nuri's is fantastic! read more

I have had them do several alterations and hems and they have always been great, and very reasonably priced. The couple that runs the place (I think Nuri and his wife) are super nice and friendly and have been in business for many many years (like 30-40?), which says a lot. They even did a super job patching favorite jeans of mine that were completely torn in the crotch area. (But didn't want to get rid of them!). Not an easy task because they were really worn...they did a great job. Once I brought some jeans in to be hemmed. I was all ready to get them measured, and she told me I really didn't need them hemmed, that I could get away with wearing them the way they were. They were a bit long, but had shrunk some from washing, which I didn't realize. I really appreciated her honesty! The people at Nuri's are so nice and do a super wonderful job! read more

These people are the sweetest folks around! I've used them for a long time and have never been disappointed. Most recently took them a purple blouse to be cleaned that my daughter got some sort of stain on. I couldn't get it out myself, so I took it to Nuri. They tried cleaning but the first result was not perfect, so they asked to be able to do it again. I said of course and gave them a few more days. Went back to pick it up and it was absolutely perfect and no extra charge. They really do a great job and totally want to ensure a customer is happy with their work. Does not stand by their own work. This "tailor" doesn't "do zippers". She took my pantsuit anyway and charged me for "fixing" the zipper, which broke the first time I put on the jumpsuit. Refused to fix their work (or replace the zipper) OR refund a penny of the fee I paid for the zipper to be fixed with no apology. In fact implied that I was lying since it took me 2 weeks to return (I was out of the country, at an event where I intended to wear said jumpsuit). I will not be returning to this establishment. This place seemed like they would be a fly by night alteration place but was I wrong. I get a lot of my things tailored and used to go to the burbs but since owners changed i decided to part ways. I found Nuri's obviously on Yelp. This place did some alterations for my brother and he said they did a great job. I took in about 7 dress shirts. They dry cleaned it, thank God, because a LOT of other places just throw your clothes into a washing machine and call it day. Really watch out for that when going to other places. Nuri's does an excellent job and i like the mom and pop feel of his place. read more

I went to Nuri's after reading all the great reviews here on Yelp, to have a bridesmaid dress shortened. They did a great job and were inexpensive! Bridal shops want to charge more than $100, and they did it at Nuri's for $35. The only reason I can't give 5 stars is that they are not able to accomodate orders needed quickly. They have so much business, they needed about 2 -3 weeks to complete my order. I had the time, so it was no big deal. read more

Sometimes it takes a bit longer than expected to get your clothes back, but that's pretty understandable for a Mom and Pop operation. I joined Yelp for the sole purpose of reviewing Nuri's. I had a bridesmaid dress that was 2 sizes too big. It was a beautiful little black dress, but it was complicated; multi layered with boning, one shoulder, a sheer overlay, a side zipper and it was going to be a complete alteration nightmare. (Other bridesmaids had tailors refuse to do their alterations it was going to be so difficult!) I didn't use my usual tailor as they were going to charge more than the dress cost to alter it. But Nuri's charged me half my other tailor's estimate, they brought me in for 2 fittings, were so sweet and personable and the Dress. Was. PERFECT. It fit like a glove and the work was flawless. After searching Yelp for a great northside tailor who could make adjustments my two brand new, kind of fancy, suits, I decided to give Nuri's a try. I was nervous, having only previously taken my nice dress clothes to a family friend for modification but as that is no longer an option, I needed a place I could trust in the city. Nuri's did a fantastic job. In ten days I had my suit jackets brought in and my pants hemmed for a total of $100.00. Everything looks and fits perfectly and I appreciated having the father tailor's eye as I first tried on my clothes and we discussed what we were changing. Something in particular that I wanted to mention: I asked the nice woman who runs the shop to please save the scraps of fabric that get cut from the suits in case I need to patch the suit at some point. She said they don't typically do that but that she would write a note on the ticket so they wouldn't forget to save the fabric. We had this brief chat as I was walking out the door and I was not convinced she would actually write the note on the ticket since I had already been written up. Before I left today, she told me that the fabric they saved is in the back pockets of each pair of pants. She must have indeed written down my custom request! PERFECT. I will be coming back here to have other dress clothes worked on. Oh, and also remember... they take cash (or check?) only. No credit card. Two thumbs up. read more

How on earth does Nuri's have such good reviews? I live nearby, so I have used them several times. On more than one occasion, an article of clothing (sweater, suit, silk blouse) was dropped off with a stain and came back with a stain! I have never had a dry cleaner return stained clothing to me before, and I can't believe I returned after that. The straw that broke the camel's back was a terrible alterations experience. In January or February, my boyfriend dropped off my wool coat and asked for the pocket to be replaced. When I picked up the coat and the other items, the pocket had not been fixed. I brought this up, and she told me that my boyfriend didn't tell her about the pocket. I didn't want it to be a he-said-she-said, so I asked for the pocket to be replaced. She quoted me $10 and said that it would be ready on Wednesday. The following Saturday I came in, and the pocket hadn't been replaced. I asked why, and the answer was "pocket takes time." What? I was so disappointed I said I was taking my jacket back. She then turned to the gentleman and asked him if he could do the pocket that day, and he said yes. She even gave me a special offer of $10, saying that pockets are usually $20. Well, that was an outright lie because she quoted me $10 one week earlier. They said they could get it done that day for $10, so I returned two hours later. Well, the pocket was terrible. I know what you're thinking - "how do you mess up a pocket?" By shaping it like some kind of spiral staircase that not even my phone can sit in. Just the worst. TERRIBLE customer service, BAD dry cleaning, BAD alterations. I will never return to Nuri's. read more

Sadly, Nuri passed away and I miss that dear, sweet man. His grown sons have stepped up to help Nuri's wife and that should be a good thing except when it's not. They seem to have all sorts of big ideas about how to reinvent a tailoring/dry cleaning business and seem to have approached it with a Power Point presentation and the conceit that one of them worked in banking. Lost amid all their grand plans and egos is an understanding that they oversee a service business and customer service needs to trump all. There have been lapses and it sort of breaks my heart. It used to be a way-above average neighborhood stalwart. Now it seems to have lost its soul. read more

If we could give Nuri zero stars we would. Do NOT go here. My wife and I brought a brand new dress to be hemmed at the bottom. We asked for it back 7 days later, the first problem is she did not have it ready after 7 days, she called and asked for more time, and my wife was ok with it. We asked for a simple hem and team and the. It's was $40, sounded high but we said ok. My wife went to pick it up, the dress was not steamed, Nuri said it would cost another $10, then my wife inspected the dress and it had snags on a brand new dress on the top and Nuri said it was like that, which it was not! Never again, now my wife has to purchase a new dress for the wedding in 3 days. Nuri's is a nightmare and awful customer service. This could have been a much different review of we just had a person that understood customer service. read more
