I have been coming here for alterations for a few years now. I've gotten pants, suits, jackets, and dresses tailored here. As someone on the shorter side with a large waist-to-hip ratio, I often need my clothes tailored to get the fit just right. The pricing is very fair at $20 for a hem, $15 for a waist take-in, and varying for a few other services. They are cash only and can provide change if needed. The turn around time varies, but usually is about a week or two. I've never needed anything rushed, but I'm sure they will work with you if needed! I am removing one star only because there have been two times I went to pick up an item on the agreed upon date and the items weren't ready. This was an inconvenience, but hasn't happened in a while. My most recent visit: I dropped off a pair of pants on Monday morning and received a text on Wednesday that the pants were ready for pickup -- a few days early. I don't usually receive a text when the items are ready, but greatly appreciate the increased communication and confirmation! I have been going to Fannys for years. She truly is the best. Her work is impeccable. She has altered dresses for me. Sometimes last minute. I ruined my sons travel baseball uniform trying to iron on a patch. She remade the uniform with fabric she already had and no one could tell. Holes patched in my sons pants many times. My experience was so poor that I wish I could give 0 stars. I called before going in and specifically identified that I had been called in for a job interview the next morning. I asked if I could receive same day service and the lady that I was speaking to said yes. I took my pants in and all the measuring was done (I was only having the bottom of the legs hemmed). I once again confirmed that she would be able to do same day service. She informed me that she would be open until 7 and they would be ready right at 7. I said I would be back at 650 to pickup the pants. She confirmed. I went out and took care of other preperations for the interview. At 645, I returned back to this storefront to find the door locked and the lights off. I spent 10 minutes pounding on the door, window and calling to pickup my pants. No answer. The next morning at 740am, I received a phone call. It was the owner letting me know that she had decided to close at 630 the day before. I had received no communications the day before, but she called me the next morning to tell me I could jow swing by and pickup my pants. I was already en route and was there at 8am sharp. Due to the poor customer service, I ended up having to pay for an Uber to my interview and the owner offered no reconciliation for my inconvenience. I had a nerve-wracking experience here: dropped of a bridesmaid dress to be taken in and then when I went back to pick it up on the agreed upon day, there was a note on the door saying that, due to an illness, the shop was closed for "a while" (!?!) tried not to panic since I still had a few days until the wedding Called a couple days later, she's open again with not much explanation. Odd. All that being said, she did absolutely beautiful work at a very reasonable price (not super cheap, but reasonable). The side seams I had taken in were complex with a lining and a peplum and it would up looking like the dress was just made for me. Loved her work, will go back for more tailoring. read more

The zipper on my favorite signature bag full of patches from my international travels finally zipped it's last words. ARG! I was quickly on the lookout for a tailor in my new neighborhood of Ravenswood/Lincoln Square. I couldn't believe it that my neighboring Yelpers had nothing to pitch in (5 businesses existed in the Yelp search engine but all without ratings and provided an unconnected or no phone number). I did come across one Yelped cleaners in a Google search that does alterations but he (J-Hee) possessed mixed reviews. I then took to the streets on this first day of the 2009 new year, passing each one of the shops listed on Yelp. All had misadvertising "OPEN" signs turned around or flashing but my last option--Fanny's Alterations! I quickly opened the door to this Latino alterations shop with its windows filled with various posters (like one boasting "Alteraciones mientras espera--Alterations while you wait"). My eyes were so surprised that the "Open" sign really meant it was open that I stumbled down the two steps that sit inside right after you open the door (you have been warned). A short older Latina woman was quick to greet me in her adorable accent while I was hoping she wouldn't misweave the needle in her hands. I handed her my murse (man-purse) and said, "I desperately need a new zipper for my bag." She looked up into my blue eyes which either flashed $$ signs, OR she further concentrated on the word "desperately" that I had just mumbled. She said "Oooo-k no problem mijo" as she played around with my bag's zipper to reconfirm that it jumped off its track. She handed over the little carbon copy receipt for me to write my name and phone number as she stated that it would be $15. "To replace a ZIPPER?!," I thought to myself as I wrote down my name. I had remembered that a day prior I received an estimate of $8 over the phone from another business near my work. Fanny continued unaware that she was speaking Spanglish and pointing her broken wooden ruler at the calendar to show which day it would be ready...First on the 10th...then the 9th. I then pulled my non-Gringo card and stated "Do you prefer to speak in Spanish" (in Spanish of course). She got a big smile, while I mentioned the other deal I had been offered in her native language. Fanny slid the ruler farther to the left--I had opened up a can of worms--and said in Spanish, "OK, $10 and it will be ready on the 6th. Do you mind if the new zipper is a bit of a lighter color". I both internally and externally smiled and nodded at being pleased yet tricky with my Spanish-speaking skills. If that wasn't enough, my bag did have a bunch of Latin American flags represented on it. I said "gracias" and went on my merry way, wondering what day after all my bag would be done. Hopefully when my murse is in my possession again, my nickname of "Patches" will continue to live on. read more

I needed to get some pants shortened (They don't make pants in my proportions, so this is a constant need). I started a new job that's a bit fancier than other places I've worked, and had to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe in a few days. I was in a hurry, I dropped off a couple pairs of pants at 1pm, and asked if she could have it ready the same day. She wasn't thrilled about the quick turn around but agreed. I picked the pants up at 6.30 that night. Wore one the next day and they were perfect. She did a real nice job, (like the pants were made that length!) and I really appreciate her working with me on the quick turn around. read more

This place is my closest dry cleaner and thought I'd give them a shot. I realize that isn't their main function but I thought I'd try them. Nope. Just nope. They lost our shirts for nearly two weeks. They eventually found them somewhere in their factory, but not okay. They didn't even offer a discount or any compensation for losing them. That one experience was enough to keep me from returning. These ladies are so lovely! Every time I come in there it feels like I'm going into a family member's shop. I needed emergency alterations for a dress for a wedding outside the country. Literally three hours before I had to get on the plane they altered my dress with no problem. I won't ever forget their kindness :) read more

Prices are cheaper than other places and they're are always polite but they may lose your clothes. They lost a sentimental dress of mine that's tied to my heritage. I already feel a sense of loss by not being able to freely visit. I was not offered compensation either so keep that in mind if you decide to get your clothes dry cleaned here. read more

Dropped off my suit for alterations,never told me that they were going on vacation for two months. Called but just got message. Basically held my suit hostage for over two months. Never even called to tell me they were back. Don't plan on ever using them again. read more
