Stay far, far away. I took my wedding dress to Fame Cleaners to be altered and dry cleaned as it was recommended to me by a friend. When I picked it up, it fit great but it had weird black marks on it, almost like pen or pencil marks. I brought it back immediately and the owner said she would try to get them out. She dry cleaned my dress and when I came back for it a few days later it had more black marks! I decided to take my dress elsewhere for cleaning, as I was freaking out! My wedding was a week away. I asked for a refund for my $35 dry cleaning bill - even thought I spent $130 at Fame and now another $31 dollars at a different cleaner. I thought it would be fair compensation to get my original dry cleaning bill refunded. I didn't ask for anything more, even though I had to drive all around town to find a place that could fix my dress in time. The owner got very mean and angry with me. First blaming me for the spots and said "Why did you put those spots there," as if was trying to scam her for $35. Plus, why on earth would I ruin my own wedding dress?! She also asked me to show her my receipt to prove I took it to another cleaner, which I did, a much better Dry Cleaner up on Bryn Mawr. I then I tried to prove to her with photos* of the dress on my phone with time stamps on them to show that those black marks were not there before I dropped it off to Fame. (I will add photos) She condescendingly stated "This is what you get for buying a thrift store dress." Sure, I did buy the designer gown used from Poshmark but not from a thrift store, but what does this even matter? After she openly mocked me several times for being "cheap" she said she would reimburse me $20. I told her I wanted the full $35 and she got even more hostile and yelled at me, over and over telling me the stains got there because the dress was used. I told her I understood I had a purchased a used dress, but that those black marks were not there previously to dry cleaning. I told her I get that mistakes happen, and I just wanted an apology and my $35. After going back and forth with this she told me she now wasn't going to even pay me the $20 because she "changed her mind." I then walked out the door because I didn't know what else to do and this woman was so hostile to me that I didn't know what she was going to do. I have never had a business owner belittle me and yell at me the way this woman did. I was nothing but nice and understanding, and this is all during an incredibly stressful time. I don't understand how she stays in business with an attitude like this and her utter disrespect for customers. All I wanted was an apology and a refund for the my $35 dry cleaning bill. read more

I don't read long reviews, so I don't expect you to. But, if you are looking for a place to alter an expensive garment, please do not go to this place. Now, if you want to understand why... I never write reviews and I very rarely take offense when a business owner acts a fool but this is worth the time. A very pleasant experience took a turn for the worst. I brought my bridesmaid dress to Fame Wednesday evening to have the bottom hemmed. While I completely understood that because it was a beaded dress, a very small number of beads would fall off at the bottom, I did not expect the dress to be cut along the bottom with a pair of my niece's scissors. There was absolutely no attempt to ensure that the bottom of the dress maintained its even hem along the bottom. I entered the store excited to try my dress on, she immediately took out her credit card machine, expecting me to not check the quality of work that was done. When I came out of the room to have her inspect the finished product, she intentionally ignored my advances to get her attention. When she finally came over to me, I asked if there was any way we could clean up the edges at the bottom. This is when all hell broke loose. "Oh my gosh, really! No one can see that! Who cares!" I told her that though no one could see the bottom from afar, it was a 300 dollar dress that is now ruined. She proceeded to yell at me repeating "who cares," as a customer walked in. Now, I know that when I am a regular at a business, I will take the side of the owner, so I did not expect the customer to side with me by any means when he saw me in tears because my best friend's wedding is in three days, I am the maid of honor, and my dress is ruined. After going back into the room to change, I could hear the owner and her husband outwardly talking crap about me to the customer. Because I was mortified, I waited in the room until he left. When I came out, still in tears, I explained that I could not pay for what she had done to my dress. She laughed in my face. Her husband, and I quote, "Is this how you act in public?! Get out!!" As he swung his scissors back and forth in my face. It is unfortunate, because they seemed great when I first met them. read more

Fun= scoring a super cute pair of William Rast jeans on Rue-la-la for only $89! Not So Fun= finding a good seamstress to shorten them! I decided it was time to give Fame Cleaners another shot, but this time for alterations! I dropped off my jeans and they told me they'd have them ready in 1 day. Whoa! I typically have to wait a week to get my jeans back so this was exciting for an instant gratification gal like myself. The alterations cost $22, which is about what I've paid in the past. I picked them up after a day and they were just perfect- the original hems were put back on and they were the exact length I was hoping for. I may need to do some more shopping for jeans now that I've (finally) discovered a good seamstress to shorten them! read more

My family and I have been going to Fame for over a year now and have had a great experience every time. Our clothes come out cleaned and crisp as we request each time. The management is very nice as well. This business cares about its customers but some of these "customers" writing these reviews have no understanding of what it takes to run a business. People need to show up on time to drop things off if they want it by a certain time and people should be arriving before they close to pick the items up. You wouldn't go to any other business after they close and ask them for something so there's no reason to treat a dry cleaners any different. I used to come here regularly for cleaning, until I one day picked up my favorite silk shirt to find there were large black stains at the bottom. I brought it to the owner's attention, and she got defensive claiming the spots were there when I brought the shirt in. She didn't even offer to refund me for the service. That's the last time I went to this place. The customer service is terrible and there is a chance they will ruin your stuff and then blame it on you. Stay away! read more

I was looking frantically for a tailor for my wedding dress. My wedding was 5 weeks away but who knew all the tailors in Chicago would be booked months out? The owner was so sweet and told me i could come in right away. She was wonderful in helping me decide exactly what needed to be done, did not pressure me into making changes at all like some tailors do. My dress was ready in 1.5 weeks and it fit like a glove! My wedding was this past weekend and i returned to Fame Cleaners to get my dress dry cleaned! Other places quoted me $300+ but Fame, once again proved to be outstanding and quoted me $90! I've been here a couple times in the past for dry-cleaning with no real strong feelings. The dry-cleaning is a bit pricier than what I'm used to. Recently however, I've had 2 consecutive bouts with bad customer service.. Definitely not what I'd expect for what I'm paying. I went to get some pants shortened. I was charged $13.50 at the time. When I went to pick them up, the male owner rang me up and I noticed the charge was for $19.50; without even telling me, they charged me more than was originally agreed upon because "there was an inner lining we didn't see at first." The pants ended up being too short and the inner lining wasn't even sewed back in--every time I take the pants off, the inner lining pulls out with my leg. Had dropped off pants for dry cleaning just the other day and when I went to pick the pants up today, I was told there was a surcharge for credit cards under $10. I hadn't been told that when I dropped off and no signs were posted anywhere in the facility. When I mentioned that, the male owner rudely replied, "all of our old customers know that." Okay.. Well, can't expect to have old customers if you treat your new ones like that. Conveniently located in my neighborhood, but the price point + the poor customer service is a combo that has me sure NOT to come back. read more

Wow, I really don't understand all these negative reviews! Are they real?? I don't often write reviews, but I love Fame and feel compelled to defend them! I've been using Fame Cleaners since my husband and I moved to the neighborhood about 3 years ago and have always had great service there. The owners are SUPER friendly and our clothes have always come back on time and in excellent shape. We've had some basic tailoring done at Fame as well, and they have always done a nice job. They even rescued the dress that I wore to my civil wedding ceremony which had developed marks after sitting in my closet for a few months. I was sure it was ruined, so you can imagine my relief after they gave it back to me totally spotless! Not sure what is going on with others that have posted here, but I plan on using Fame as long as I'm in the city! They are wonderful! read more

Cleaning out my closet this fall meant it was finally time to get my wedding dress packed up. Oh yeah, and hopefully get the grass stains and spray tan stains out from two wears....18 months later. Ewps. Time to get some room in my closet and send my lovely gown down to our storage unit in Joliet to live with the Avengers.* In any event, I did a little research (THANKS, YELPS!) and found Fame Cleaners down the street from my house. I didn't know if I planned to have my dress preserved, but I went in thinking it I could do it for under $300, I would. Basically, I figured that boxing it would make it easier for storage. I have no delusions that my daughter will one day wear my dress, but hey, if I one day have a daughter, and if she likes my dress, then it's there, right? $220 for cleaning AND preservation? Done and done. My dress was ready on time, and from my cursory inspection looked beautiful. Of course, it's sealed in a box now, so who REALLY knows . One tip: MAKE SURE IT IS YOUR DRESS before you leave. They send out the dresses for cleaning, and sadly, mine got switched out with another dress, a fact I didn't discover until I got home. Luckily, my dress was still at the shop and it was a quick fix. I can't even imagine the sadness I would feel if I didn't discover this until ten years from now. The lady at the shop was mortified, and I suspect believing that I was going to scream at her. Lucky for her, I didn't. Lucky for both of us, it was a quick fix. Lesson learned, and one I will pass along to you: CHECK BEFORE YOU LEAVE. I would recommend this spot for wedding dress cleaning/preservation. The price seemed fair, and their mistake was remedied quickly. *My husband's extensive comic book collection resides in a storage locker for safe-keeping. My wedding dress now is protected by the esteemed Avengers and other superhero folk. I truly believe my dress is safe and sound, thanks to Marvel Comics! read more

This is a true story. I called Fame Cleaners 1 hour before close and asked if they could hem a pair of jeans before close. They said come on it. Well I showed up with FOUR pairs of pants 30 min before close, I am going on a 7 am flight the next day, and said "Can we make this happen?" They said,"Get in the changing room!" and they made it happen! Working past store hours to get my paints hemmed, tailored (someone sold be bellbottom jeans), and a hole patched. This dry cleaners ruined my coat! It had patent leather trim on it in (I was even told to pay extra because of the trim) but when I picked it up, all the trim was gone! What's worse is they tried to pass it off like nothing had happened. At the very least they could have told me and apologized. When I saw it, I asked for a refund for the dry cleaning fee. The owner, Vivienne, said ok. When I said I also wanted to be refunded for at least 50% of the cost of the coat, she said no. Vivienne claims that this was an issue I had to take up with the manufacturer as they wrote the wrong material on the label. She said I should call the store I bought the coat from and ask for a refund. She was mean and confrontational throughout the conversation. When I told her I was very disappointed in the way she was handling this, she said she didn't care. read more

In asking to confirm timing for a last minute piece if dry cleaning, the presumed owner of the establishment decided that yelling at me was a best approach to work through any confusion about what pieces of clothing may be done and when. I ordered a dress online for an event and when it arrived it had a small tear near the zipper. Normally, I would have returned the dress but I loved this one so much and it should have been a relatively easy fix. I wasn't able to do it myself due to time constraints (and the dress was delivered to my job and I needed it that night). I called Fame and they fixed the dress and reinforced the zipper with a two-hour turnaround. I was very happy. I've used Fame several times over the past 5 years and they never disappoint! read more

It should have taken me minutes, not months, after getting my bridesmaid's dress back to write this review! When I realized that the bridesmaid's dress I was wearing for my cousin's wedding would need some major altering, I was at a loss. I'd never had anything altered before. My friends, bless them, were no help in recommending a place, so to Yelp I went! (Oh, fellow Yelpers, you always come through for me.) I took the dress to Fame where they shortened the straps, took in the sides, and added a stitch in the center-chest (busiest bridesmaids dress ever! Whoa.) I was a little shocked when she totaled everything up and handed me the ticket for $60.00, but trying on my newly altered and newly fabulous dress completely made up for it! The dress fit like a glove and the quality of work was excellent! All the stitches held through the wedding and reception and (thanks to my cousin for picking out a basic black dress) I'm looking forward to wearing it again! I don't bring my dry cleaning here b/c it's not "green"--yes it matters. If you're a skeptic, I suggest you do some research :) I do bring my denim & slacks here for alterations. I tend to pin my own before I bring them in b/c the one time I had them do it, they were a little short, but not terrible. My pants always look perfect when I pick them up. They usually have them done in a few days. I brought my boyfriend's tie in for cleaning and pressing and it looked awful when we picked it up. There were press marks all over it. Could have just done that myself. At least it only cost $2.50. read more

I took my wedding dress to Fame Cleaners for alterations. It was 2 sizes too big and also needed to be hemmed. The dress consisted of 4 layers of fabric. Overall, I think the quality of work is excellent. When I look at the inside of my dress it doesn't look altered. It now fits perfectly. It is very snug to my body yet is still comfortable to wear. When I picked up the dress the first time, I was a bit unhappy with one aspect of the alterations so I left the dress with the seamstress. I came back the next day after they fixed the issue and it was perfect. I was very happy with the final outcome. If you check out Fame, my only recommendation is to be very specific about what you want. When they hemmed my dress, they made the top layer our agreed length. They made the other 3 layers shorter. I wanted them all the same length. The seamstress' response was that the top layer is always longer. We never discussed that specific detail so I wasn't mad about it. If I had a redo, I would have specified. It looks fine either way so it's not a big deal. I think their prices are probably average for wedding alterations but the quality of work is very good. read more

Alright, alright, alright. I cave. I've been going to fame for the past year, and I cave. It's honestly a great service all-around. I've had so many things tailored here and it's always perfect. The only issue I ever had was when I had a coat dry cleaned this spring & it had some leather detailing.... the owner sent it to a leather cleaner without asking me first and it took a few days later to get the coat back. But, can I really be upset when she did something good for my clothes? Anyway, I'd highly recommend anyone that's picky on how clothes are handled to go to Fame. I had some jeans altered here... I had a rip in them that they sewed and had them shortened. They look good even though I told her I didn't need the original hem sewed back on. I went early and the owner wasn't in yet, but the girl who took them gave me a call an hour or so later when she talked to her to let me know how much it would be to fix the rip ($4 to fix the rip).. I picked it up the next morning and it was ready as expected. Good service. I'd go back. read more

Charged me $65 for alterations to take up straps, put in some darts on the bust, and lower a hem 1/2 an inch on a bridesmaid dress. The dress itself only cost $60. On top of that, the alterations are poorly done and make the dress unwearable, so I now have to find something else to wear within 2 days. I essentially spent $125 to be stressed out. I also brought in a coat for cleaning and it had a loose button. They charged me $20 to clean the coat and then charged me $15 to secure the button, without asking me first. Can someone please explain how sewing a button back on costs 75% as much as dry cleaning the whole entire garment? I had no idea I was taking my clothes to a couturier for services I could have gotten done at half the price elsewhere. read more
