While I always want to support my community as someone I was shocked at the pricing for a simple hem and taking in of a pair of pants. I had heard such great things about this place. I know they have to keep their doors open. I just was truly shocked. I am also just not satisfied with the end product? And yes I could have asked for adjustments but I did not have time. These items were needed for an event. I also looked online and it said 3 weeks would be a sufficient amount of time to have what I needed done. And I felt like I was treated pretty coldly when I first came in when I told them I needed the item by a certain date. Told I was "cutting it close". I don't know. Unfortunately I was not pleased with their pricing to hem a dress I received for free, they charged 200 but since I live so far and it's by my moms I paid it solely for convenience I have a private seamstress who charged 90 but she was booked so I didn't have time to get a reasonable price. But you live you learn it was 200 I really couldn't afford but it was for my mom so just FYI get a quote ahead of time. Uncommon Closet did a phenomenal job on my wedding dress for our Icelandic elopement. Read on if you want the details. If not, just stop right here and trust me when I say YOU NEED TO GO TO UNCOMMON CLOSET. When we decided to elope in Iceland, we planned to have our ceremony on the Black Sands beach and hike to various spots for some oh-so dramatic photos. This meant we'd be hiking 8 miles and be out for a 10 hour day all dressed up. After looking at hundreds of photos from other couples, I decided that I wanted a black lace dress. I found this gorgeous black lace wedding dress in photos and soon learned it was a $7k designer dress. That was ummm...way the hella outta my price range. But thanks to the interwebs' deep offerings of finding images, I found an overseas website that claimed to make a knock off for a very deep discount...as in the dress cost $300. As you could imagine, I was highly skeptical. I ordered the dress using their standard sizing that aligned with my measurements and crossed my fingers that I wasn't getting scammed. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the dress had good bones, but it needed some luvin' to make it last a day of hiking in unpredictable Icelandic weather. And this is where you, my dear Yelpers, come into play. Thanks to all your wonderful feedback on Uncommon Closet, I was able to confidently pick them. Nope, I did not run out to 10 different tailor shops looking for estimates. I was on a time crunch, and I needed a solid tailor who could execute. I had 4 basic requirements, but the team at Uncommon Closet saw beyond my requirements and envisioned the bigger picture. Here's what they did for me: 1. Swapped out the lace up back for a zipper and brought the dress in at the waist and chest 2. Hemmed the dress, which included removing some lace detailing at the bottom, hemming the dress, then reattaching the lace detailing. 3. Replaced the crappy boob cups with much better ones 4. Created a train on the dress 5. Created a bustle so that I could button up the dress train for hiking 6. Created hiking straps so that I could hold the dress up over my arms while hiking, kinda like carrying a handbag slung over your forearm 7. Added silicone straps to the shoulders so that the dress wouldn't slip off my shoulders 8. Took out a layer of crinoline so that the dress laid nicely 9. Added armpit gussets to make it easier to move my arms They partnered with me to create a fabulous dress that was precisely what I was trying to achieve. They went above and beyond my basic tailoring requirements and talked me through what a wedding dress should be and how they envisioned me moving in it. (For your full understanding of how this went, I'm including the original picture I sent to Uncommon Closet with my basic notes of what I wanted done.) What really blew my mind was their suggestion of creating the hiking straps for the dress. They had been listening to me each time I came in for fittings, and they thought through what the heck it would be like having to huff 8 miles over 10 hours in that dress. I cannot tell you how much I deeply appreciate all the work that Korri, Greta and Ash did to make me feel like a million bucks. Finally, while ability to execute was my primary requirement, I also chose them because I wanted to support a LGBTQ+ business that pays fair wages. I brought in a dress that I had custom made and the unfortunately, the measurements were all off and the dress was ill fitting. I had a very tight deadline and needed the alterations turned around in just four days. I brought in the dress and both Korri and (I believe their name was) Ian sprung into action. Korri and Ian also knew I had a budget as I had already spent so much on the dress itself. They aimed to give me the best service possible while still trying to meet my budget. I was honestly blown away by the lengths they were going to to make sure they could deliver me a perfectly fitting dress for a cost I could afford. When I received my bridesmaid dress from Azazie 4 months after placing my order, I was disappointed that the dress wouldn't zip up all the way (quarantine weight I guess...). I had 4 weeks to get the dress fixed. I found Uncommon Closet via Yelp, and submitted images to get a quote. They responded within half an hour, which was great. I had an idea to create a lower back and end the zipper lower instead of letting out the dress, and they said they could probably do it. When I went in for the first time, I was out within 15 minutes. I left knowing my dress was in capable hands and was eager to see how it would turn out. Do not recommend. Came in for the pickup of a dress and they completely botched the bottom hem. Very uneven and I had to point it out as if they were going to hope I didn't notice. They blamed their hem marking machine but also said "can be due to uneven hips" as if my hips weren't in the same spot the first apt when they marked it? Blaming my body instead of taking accountability is so wild for a place that advertises body inclusivity. Discussed where I wanted the hem fixed and they offered for me to wait to redo it that day and I said no I will come back in a week. Cut to my third visit there and it is unfinished and the owner says they are ready to mark the hem to fix. What did they do that whole week between appointments?? I needed three pairs of pants altered. I'm short, with hips and a butt, and I can never find any pants that really fit me. I've decided that I have lived too long to still be wearing ill-fitting clothing, so I made an appointment at Uncommon Closet. One pair of pants was especially tricky: fleece-lined canvas. And I'd done an awful hack job on them, using my own less-than-skilled sewing "abilities." The other ones were these lovely floral designer jeans, and the third, some trusty Levis. The end result? Korri didn't bat an eye at my frankenpants, handily wrangling them into perfection. They made the floral ones fit me like no pants I've ever had, and I couldn't help but remark aloud how great they now made my butt look! The Levis, which I couldn't decide how to alter, only that they needed...something, Korri suggested some clever elastic in the waistband. What a great idea! They fit amazingly! I came to Kate with an idea for a Chicago flag baby blanket for my sister, I wanted to incorporate my own baby blanket that was tattered and torn. TL:DR Version...Korri and the whole team at Uncommon Closet are incredible, patient, and kind and your search for the perfect tailoring service ends here. My experience with them was lengthy from start to finish, and even included a few bumps along the way but the way Korri navigated unforeseen circumstances left me feeling singularly important and cared for. Ultimately, leaving my suiting needs with them was one of the best decisions I made in the wedding planning process. My wedding was 10/25/2020. My dream was to have a custom suit. I am a woman with curves and I really desired a suit that didn't read "woman business suit" but more androgynous leaning masculine. When the pandemic set in, I started to be more concerned with costs associated with my wedding and started to consider that maybe a custom suit would cost too much. I decided to buy a suit off the rack and have it tailored. My internet searches lead me to Korri and Uncommon Closet. I first touched based with them in June of 2020 and Korri was immediately easy to speak with and full of useful knowledge. I bought a suit off the rack and made my first appointment with Korri in August. In that first appointment it became apparent the suit I bought was not going to result in the desired look. Korri chose their words carefully to deliver this news and I am so grateful for that experience. With barely the minimum time left until the wedding to accomplish a custom suit, I made the decision to fully trust Korri and team to make my suit through their partnership with Sharpe Suiting. Korri fit me in for the custom suit appointment later that day. They helped me pick out many custom details. The day before my first fitting of my custom suit Korri emailed me to let me know my suit had not arrived in the mail. This, I know, had to be a hard email to write and devastating for me to read. Korri reassured me the replacement would arrive on time and we would have time to do a final fitting. Again, I trusted Korri and team to deliver and they did. The end result was an amazing, beautiful suit, made just for me, with intimate details. I was so excited to support this business. I congratulated them on their success when I arrived after reading an article about the business and their mission. I drove from the NW suburbs because it is LBGTQ+ owned and was willing to pay a premium to support small and because of the numerous 5-star reviews. I am officiating my best friend's wedding and purchased a new women's tuxedo that fit fairly well to begin with - no restructuring needed, just hems in multiple locations. The initial fitting went well. The owner was kind and I felt comfortable. When I picked up the suit it was obvious even while the clothes were still on the hanger that the jacket hem was substantially uneven. I thought how could this not be noticeable by the tailor who worked on it?? After I dressed the back of the jacket bubbled out and the pants hem were completely two different lengths. I showed Korri and pointed out that the jacket fabric was hemmed but the lining inside was not, hence the bubble. This seems like such a basic tailoring principle - how can you not hem the lining?? But, I was kind and patient because people make mistakes. Korri immediately agreed that this was not ok. They apologized and remeasured and I was set to pick up the suit the following week - 6 days before the event. Another 45min trip in from the burbs and the jacket hem length was fixed in front but still a small bubble in the back and the pants were still slightly uneven. Korri seemed to notice the bubble and said it just needed to be pressed. They ironed it but the lining was still not the same length as the jacket fabric. I removed the jacket and came out of the fitting room because I saw the tailor left the center seam of the lining completely open! They forgot to close it before my fitting?? Korri told the tailor and Ian rushed to fix it only to sew it closed ON THE OUTSIDE of the lining seam, not on the underside like the rest of the lining, and every other seam. That's simply unacceptable. Korri didn't check it knowing that I had already been back once for poor craftsmanship. I left knowing I didn't want them to touch my clothes any further. I drove home to take pictures and then instantly to another tailor. At this point I'm not sure it will get repaired to the point where I'm comfortable. I'm devastated. Lost sleep knowing that the wedding is in 5 days and I will be in front of 100+ people with a botched suit that I paid a pretty penny for. I stressed about whether or not to write this review but the reality is, the suit I paid $250 for is possibly not repairable and the $234 I gave UC is simply not justifiable. In addition to a refund I should get the cost of replacing the suit. I paid for a professional service and I'm shocked that this is how it turned out. I hope they learn from this and my goal is not to tarnish the company but this happened and I'm out nearly $500 because of it and I have no response email from the owner, who prior to my complaint responded to my emails within minutes.
