Starting on the 1st Tuesday of November, this business had a stand at the Ferry farmer's market on the north side of the clock tower. As I shopped, I noticed that there were several customers each time I passed and, being on a schedule, I didn't stop other than to take a photo of the stand and its menu. The following Tuesday, she was just setting up so I looked at her menu as she talked about her family business, explaining the legacy and her passion to continue it. I decided to get a three pack box to try. Nucha Empanadas allowed me to experience sheer disappointment in a single bite! I was at the SOMA StrEat Food Park and spotted this food truck from a distance while I was already eating. As usual, because my eyes are bigger than my stomach, I decided I could use an empanada to top off dinner. The food truck window was lined up with a variety of savory and sweet empanadas, and my mouth was salivating. Almost $7 later, I was handed a nice little empanada after it was heated up in a microwave, and I'm smiling, so excited to devour it. I poured some chimichurri sauce on top and took a big bite, ready to let a "mmm" escape from my mouth. Instead, I was met with a mix of cold and lukewarm fried dough that was somewhat stale. My face fell as I experienced first surprise, then sadness, and finally regret. Found this truck at the SOMA food truck park recently. They have a great variety of Empanadas, including VEGAN empanadas, which was great. I tried the 3 Vegan options Kale and Butternut Squash, Corn and Peppers ( which had a vegan cheese kind of an ingredient as well) and Roasted Eggplant. All of them were tasty and my favorite was probably the "Corn and Peppers". The 4th vegan option was a spinach empanada. They also have sweet / dessert empanadas. The price for 1 empanada is $6 which is a little high I feel, but the price is discounted for bulk purchases. If you buy 2 it is $5.50 / each and $5/ each if you buy 3. I first found out about Nucha Empanada at the SOMA Food Truck event. Nucha offers many different flavored empanadas (sweet and savory), some of the favorites are the ham and cheese, corn and peppers, mushroom, spicy beef, onions, and cheese. Some of the sweet flavors include pineapple, apple, peach cobbler, and blueberry. The empanadas are shaped like big, fried, crispy potstickers. I ordered the apple and the spicy beef which were both very delicious! My spicy beef came with a small sample of green sauce to put on it, but honestly, I didn't even need the sauce. The empanadas tasted great just warmed up and was very filling. I plan to try more of their empanadas and come out of my comfort zone to try out flavors I normally wouldn't. The prices are a little steep coming at $4. When I want to treat myself to a $4 empanada, i'll come to Nucha's! read more

I agree with every recent reviews. I feel very ripped off paying $19.65 for THREE dry empanadas at Sparks Social. I love supporting small businesses but wow, $19 for three? I found them at the Alameda farmers market on Saturday. I got the spicy beef, spicy pork, and the chicken. Of the three, the spicy pork was the best. The smoked pork taste radiated through each bite. It was not spicy for me, but for some, I sure it would be. The spicy beef and the chicken were good, but not as good as the pork. I didn't get food poisoning- that's what 1 star is reserved for but I've never had a worse empanada in my life. The lady behind the counter literally microwaved them from the refrigerator making the crust extremely soggy and limp. The woman at the window was quite friendly and the price was reasonable (2 for $11.99) They handed them through the window and I took my seat across the lawn. My friend and I both bit into our empanadas to find them cold. Not room temperature, not frozen, but cold to the touch inside and out, as though they pulled it straight from the fridge. I tried three Nucha Empanadas recently when they were located at Soma StrEat Food Park, and overall it was less than impressive. You'll pay $5 per empanada {or $9 for 2, $12 for 3 and $20 for four} which are very much a snack food or addition to a meal, but as much as I eat them, I can never convince myself that they're a fully well-rounded or satisfying meal. Overall, I though the fillings were lackluster in flavor and in punch, in addition to them being a little sparse. This was my least favorite food truck when visiting the food park. read more

I dont get it. While people are complaining about the server or food, I found the place to be really good and tasty. I had another place near the Ferry Building where the empanadas are small and expensive, but this place was delicious. When I saw her pop that empanada in the microwave I should've turned and run, but even though I knew better i remained optimistic that somehow a previously baked empanada would remain crispy after being nuked. Wrong. I tried Nucha Empanadas at Spark Social and it seemed the best choice mainly because a lot of the other food trucks weren't open yet. There was no line which is generally not a sign that their product is a must try. The mushroom and cheese filling was not bad but it was completely ruined by the soft crust. Got to try Nucha Empanadas at the Oakland Veg Fest this weekend and I thought the prices were steep considering the size of the empanada, but apparently, judging based on the reviews, the prices seem to depend on what the event is and my paying $5 for one seems to be about average. Anyway, I understand that the event couldn't have possibly had tools to properly heat up the empanada, but I was disappointed that mine was microwaved and only half warm. The inside was cold. It didn't stop me from loving how good my food was, but I love my food roasty toasty, so yeah, that was sad. Plus, they didn't have the flavor I really wanted, but I guess that means I got to try other types. In the end, I think my food was good, but it was expensive, lukewarm and probably not worth the experience, although I do appreciate that they have vegan empanadas. I say it was good, but I'm a cost vs benefits person, so take of that what you will. read more

Tried these bad boys out as SF Street Eats in SOMA! The empanadas are so tasty! I ordered one spicy beef and one corn and peppers. The spicy beef is delicious- the outside was crisped to perfection (think Pillsbury croissant) and the inside was perfectly seasoned beef. The corn and peppers had a little more air inside. We found this place inside the SoMa StrEat Food Park and we were happy with our selection. We ordered the Chicken, Spicy Pork, and the Cheese/Onion empanadas which all had their nice flavors. I didn't necessarily love or understand the olive oil concoction on the side as I would have preferred a sauce or dip instead. Either way, these were a nice size based on our hunger at the time. We ordered 3 to share for lunch and they filled us up enough to hold us over until dinner so job well done. At the SOMA StrEAT Food trucks we came here and had the pepperoni and cheese, the corn and pepper and a peach cobbler one for dessert (all non- vegan versions as they have both options). The empanadas crust was super yummy and fillings were very nice. I would recommend both flavors of the savory and can't wait to try more! The spicy chimmichurri sauce is quite spicy so beware, but it's not a lingering spice so it's great! The peach cobbler empanada was really good too, and not too sweet, the crust was a more firm crispy type than the savory ones which were more buttery. I can't wait to try the other dessert ones too! Great spot. I love the variety of empanadas. I usually get the pepperoni pizza, ham/cheese, mushroom gorgonzola and spinach feta. They are delicious with a crispy outside and lots of filling inside. It is listed on one of the 100 must do things in San Francisco so for $5 I got the most popular one. It was early so no line. At this location I think it is fun to just eat small items at many venders so this is a must if going that route. Mine was hot but not so hot I could not eat it right away which is nice. read more
