Ham and Cheese Empanada and Mushroom Empanada.
    Chrissy H.

First time visiting this Empanada place. We stumbled upon this accidentally as we were walking on Valencia Street and something made me stop to look inside. Maybe, I have an Empanada radar? I do enjoy them and have tried Empanada's at so many other places in NorCal as well as SoCal. I have to say I couldn't give them 5 stars. In my opinion and in all fairness, we only tried two of them (ham and cheese and the mushroom) and found them to be overly salty. We felt they relied on the salt to bump up the flavor and to me Empanadas are about the quality of the filling and just the right amount of seasoning. The pepper salsa and chimichurri that was given to us to accompany the Empanadas are very good. Not likely to return but service was decent. FYI, you may need to hit the counter bell to be helped.

The chorizo empanada filling was very flavorful, and the ratio of filling to dough was great! I would come back and try more flavors.

Cute little coffee shop with lots of yummy empanadas. The sweet banana one was awesome.

The empanadas are really, really good. Definitely different than any other style I'm used to. I had one of each of the chicken empanadas and both hit the spot. No complaints! Staff was very friendly, and when my order was up, they even came and found me. If you're in the mood for empanadas, I would definitely recommend this place, if I lived closer, it would definitely be a go to spot for me.

The empanadas were good. Not my absolute favorite, but definitely a solid option if you're looking for something quick and satisfying. Service was great and the staff was friendly. The music inside was a little loud for my taste, but they have nice outdoor seating, so I ended up sitting outside and it was much more enjoyable.

We parked right in front of Venga after a long search for parking. "why not", we said and went inside. I enjoyed the decorative points at this small eatery. We all love empanadas and settled in for a meal. The first thing we noticed was the room temperature. It was damn cold inside. We noticed other Cust rubbing their hands together and holding onto their noses for heat. The first thing we asked on this 50 degree night was can we close the door. The answer was no so we braved the cold and ate. It was uncomfortable and noticed the food and wine were cold. The food was good.

Always my stop for a quick tasty bite. You choose your empanada and they warm it up and then you enjoy. By default you get a salsa rosada, a creamy, tomato based sauce. They used to serve the chimichurri sauce on the table, but now you have to ask for it. I love the Argentine beef empanada with peppers and onions. They also have a whole bunch of vegetarian options, including, spinach, cheese and sweet corn.

food 50/50 service 25/25 ambience 25/25 total 100/100 delicioso empanadas argentos!!! super amable y sencillo! lugar es facil llegar y ordernar! tried 2 empanadas. the beef and the 5 pepper manchego cheese & loved it. the orange salsa i preferred over the chimichurri (but that's because i am picky and prefer my familys recipe from buenos aires) the location is easy to walk to, quick to order and the person was very nice! i loved the collage hanging on the wall of random history pop culture and land marks from Argentina! definitely will come back to try more empanadas and the alfajores, they look legit!

Been here a few times after visiting the mission and hanging out at Dolores Park because empanadas always sound good. However I'm sad to report I'm just consistently disappointed by the quality of empanadas. I can't justify continuing to pay $6 for empanadas that are average. It's a no frills ambiance, you're coming to grab a quick bite or taking it to go. The service was a little slow but that's because there was only one person working and they have to reheat the empanadas when you come. On this occasion we tried the chorizo empanadas. On their own they are decent, good portion of meat inside that was cooked well. The dough is moderately thick but not too much. Get some flaky bites that make it fun but the taste is underwhelming. I recommend trying to polish it with the chipotle sauce because the chimichurri sauce doesn't really add too much to the flavor. I don't recommend going out of your way to try these. I'll be searching for better ones moving forward.

Soooo good. I came back the day after. I tried the Argentine beef, Mediterranean, but I my favorite is the Saltena beef. Make sure to get both dipping sauces, the mildly spicy orange sauce and the chimichurri sauce.

I made a reservation for a party of 4 through Resy and the process was super easy. I'd definitely recommend making a reservation, especially on weekends, as it can be difficult to get a table as a walk-in. I tried once on a Friday night and my friends and I ended up dining at the bar side instead. The cocktails were fantastic but what really stood out was the service. One of our friends has celiac disease and cannot have any cross-contamination with gluten. The staff was exceptionally accommodating and knowledgeable. Huge shout out to EVERY server - we were definitely impressed that they knew the menu up and down, inside and out and could confidently answer all of our questions without having to check with the kitchen. That level of knowledge gave us, especially our gluten-free friend, so much peace of mind. For food, we ordered the deviled eggs, beet salad, grilled octopus, potatoes, pork shoulder and squid ink paella. Every dish was flavorful and nicely plated. We ended the meal with two desserts: the bread pudding (not gluten-free) and the crema catalana. Both were the perfect sweet ending to a wonderful dinner. We definitely left full and enjoyed taking a walk along the Embarcadero afterward to burn off a little bit of those calories :) Between the beautiful waterfront setting, excellent food, attentive service and exceptional accommodation for dietary restrictions, Coqueta is definitely a restaurant I'll be returning to and would highly recommend!

I've been coming to this location through its previous incarnations, but El Lopo is by far my favorite. There's a reason I keep coming back. It's not around the corner for me, but I'll happily catch the bus just to spend an afternoon or evening here. The cocktail program is unique, with drinks centered around sherry, vermouth, and wine rather than the usual spirits. Even if those aren't normally your go-to, trust the bartenders. They know their stuff and are always happy to recommend something you'll enjoy. The food changes with the seasons, featuring locally grown California produce. The bartenders are also welcoming, and make everyone feel like a regular. It's the kind of place where you can settle in, strike up a conversation, or simply enjoy your meal and drink at your own pace. As a fun bonus, they also organize trips to Spain. I joined one of them, and it was an incredible experience. It was thoughtfully planned, full of amazing food and wine, and gave me a deeper appreciation for the culture that inspires everything they do at the bar. Great drinks, excellent food, wonderful people, and a place that's worth going out of your way for. I almost don't want to recommend it because I want to keep it to myself, but it's too good not to share.

Not sure how long it has been up, but hopefully they reopen soon because this place is great! Now, despite having bookmarked them a while back, I have to admit it took news of The Spanish Table's longtime Berkeley location closing a few months ago to finally motivate me to check them out. However, that's on me, as I had heard nothing but great things from friends who had been here before. As soon as you step inside, you're immediately met by a whole slew of products from Spain - racks of bottles of wine, kitchen staples like dry goods, rice, canned seafood, and spices, a table with samples of olive oil, fridges chock full of cured meats and cheeses, shelves of earthenware, cookbooks, and even paella pans in a whole range of sizes. As awesome as their retail/market selection may be, though, the food counter here is what really caught my eye. Whether it be one of their hot paninis or cold Bocadillos, everything sounded so good (they also have a mix of coffees and teas). Yet, after reading through all of their options, THE PIG & FIG panini sounded too good to pass up. Filled with Jamon Serrano, Campo de Montalban Cheese, Orange-Fig Jam, and Arugula, this was terrific! The jam and jamon made for a sweet and salty pair, the cheese was delicious, there was a fair amount of meat and arugula, and the bread was soft and lightly toasted. That being said, presumably because the ingredients are imported from Spain, the overall portion felt a little light for how much it costs (~$15) when compared to your usual sort of large deli sandwiches. Given how the challenges and obstacles that forced them to close their Berkeley location (and their Mill Valley outpost earlier this year) are likely present here as well, it wouldn't be surprising if this temporary closure becomes permanent. Unsurprising, but certainly no less unfortunate. Here's to hoping that doesn't end up being the case, though, because I'd love to come back again! FOUR AND A HALF STARS rounded down.

There were a few other parties also waiting when they opened, and we were all seated relatively quickly. We chose to sit outside since it was a nice day in the Castro, and the parklet was nice and clean. The Happy Hour deal comes with 2 drinks and 5 small bites from their abbreviated happy hour menu. I got the white sangria, which was light and refreshing, while my friend got the Rosa wine - though it came out looking like a white wine so not sure if we received the right thing. Regardless both were tasty. We opted to get 2 orders of croquetas and 2 orders of the bacon wrapped dates - each order comes with 2 of each, as well as a trio of churros which came with chocolate dipping sauce. While everything was good, nothing stood out or was super memorable, and we were definitely still pretty hungry afterward. We ordered one beet and chorizo flatbread, which was pretty disappointing since it was cold, and the flatbread felt like it could be storebought and put together at home - we actually didn't end up finishing it. The mushroom skewers were a bit more unique and we enjoyed the pickled minced veggie topping that it came with, and the mushrooms had a good texture. After adding on the flat bread and skewers to the $45 Happy Hour deal, our bill came out to about $120 for two, and we weren't too full - since the food didn't really standout I can't say that I'd recommend coming here.
