The Truck Stop Breakfast, plus coffee.
    Joseph B.

Sometimes you need a good down-home Southern meal. This place delivers in spades. I had the Truck Stop Breakfast plus coffee... and for less than $10 ($9.41 to be exact) they sold me for life. The pancakes were fluffy and huge, and the biscuit was divine, buttery and not too dense. The sausage gravy could have used a little more flavor, but a pinch of salt took care of that. The bacon was thick-cut and crisp but not overdone. The eggs and grits, however, were the items that made my eyes roll back. It's very difficult to cook a perfect over-medium egg, and they did it twice. The grits were amazing, the perfect consistency. It's very easy to get them too thick or too soupy, but these were perfect. The hash brown was a bit of a letdown, and the only reason they didn't get 5 stars. It was pretty much the same as you would get at any fast food chain, a fried slab of chopped potato. The waitress was friendly and chipper (as were the regulars in the dining room), got to me promptly, and checked back often. She succeeded in avoiding my pet peeve: asking how everything is before I've even tasted it. I discovered that the waitress' parents ran the place and were doing the cooking in the back. A family-owned, family-run restaurant: It skipped past the pitfalls this kind of business can fall into and lodged firmly in my keeper list.

This is a good old time cafe. The omelet was well made with fresh ingredients and the gravy was homemade with very good sausage. The only complaint I have is that after making a great well crafted omelet and scratch made gravy, the hash browns were the frozen patty type that you throw in the deep fryer. Same as you would get at McD's or some other fast food place. The waitress was friendly and food came out quickly. I will give it only 3 stars because of the hash browns. I'll be back next time I'm in the area and hopefully try the lunch/dinner menu.

The locals greeted me like I'd just come back from a long trip instead of walking in for the first time. Either they're incredibly friendly or they thought I needed supervision. Either way, solid welcome. Service was minimal in the best possible way. No hovering, life story, or unnecessary check-ins. Just quick, friendly, and efficient, like they understood I came to eat, not start a long term relationship. Now here's where things take a turn: the food has no business being this good. I ordered the Southside Supreme Pizza, and I'm still trying to figure out how a place that looks like it could host a darts league championship is casually putting out world class pizza. I've had pizza from all over the world and this place can hold its own. Thin, perfectly crispy crust, fresh ingredients, and enough cheese to make you question your priorities but not your choices. It's like the pizza didn't get the memo about where it was being served. So yeah, I give it 5 stars. Come for the dive bar charm, stay because the food quietly outperforms half of the "fancy" places that make you wait 45 minutes for a table and then serve you a disappointment on a wooden board. I'll definitely be back. Next time I might even try to look like I belong.

Restaurant had a slight upper scale class feel and was decorated nicely. Also worth noting the bathrooms were spotless. We started out our meal with a couple of appetizers: deviled egg duo and my favorite, triple threat onion dip. Both DELICIOUS. Each table also gets a serving of jalapeño corn bread dripping in butter served in a mini cast iron skillet, it was also very good. For the main dishes we got the catfish over red beans and rice as well as the smoked meatloaf with loaded smashed potatoes and Brussel sprouts. The catfish with red beans and rice serving size is HUGE, I couldn't eat even half. The beans and rice were seasoned wonderfully. The catfish was cooked perfectly, only thing I could say is that it was a little more catfishy than I like, but, still tasty. My husband enjoyed his meatloaf and said everything tasted wonderful and no complaints. I thought the Brussels could have been cooked a little more but I think that's more of a personal preference thing. Service was very good, staff was friendly, and waitress was attentive. Pricing was very affordable and a good value. The only thing I could say negatively is that it did get very loud between 6:00-6:45 to the point that I had to keep having my husband repeat himself because I couldn't hear him. By 7:00 it had died down drastically and all was well:) I look forward to returning to Hometown Roots and trying other options from their menu as they do have have ever changing special menus.

The staff could not have been friendlier, the perfect example of southern hospitality! As far as the food... Incredible! It was a tough choice, but my guest and I both ordered the pork chop. Mine the 2 inch and his the 1 inch. These were unique in the best possible way, like a cross between smoked ham and pork chop, likely from their cooking process which I can only ASSUME involves a slow low temp smoke then a quick grill when ordered. Different, but also uniquely delicious. The sides were heavenly. I had the home made white mac and cheese and fries, and my guest had the loaded sweet potato and a salad. As far as appetizer, we received the free fresh bread loaf with sweet STRAWBERRY butter, as well as an order of loaded potato skins that were among the best I've had in recent memory. ...And all of this at an incredible price. I honestly don't know how they do it. Prices for the food we received were more like the early 2000's. Everything you see listed above plus soda/tea drinks was only about $48 with tax (pre tip). So not only was it an incredible meal with top notch service, but the price was about half of what you pay for the same quantity of food in a more populated or touristy area. Bottom line... The Red onion is a fantastic stop if your in the area and I would argue is well worth the drive if your not. They have top notch hospitality and a vast DELICIOUS menu with incredible prices to boot. I simply cannot wait to visit again and explore the menu further. Great Job!
