I think the best thing about Hometown Roots is the staff. The are welcoming, engaged and friendly. The General Manager checked on my family 3 or 4 times before, during, and after our meal. Our server had the best attitude and nicest southern bell accent even though she didn't think so. The food was all really quite good. My wife enjoyed her shrimp and grits. It was a hearty portion and she could not finish it. My son enjoyed the beef pot pie. It had a flaky crust, great flavor, and the beef was super tender. I am a Texan who has lived in the north for a VERY long time. I gave up on the idea of getting a good chicken fried steak in Indiana many years ago. Because of this restaurant, I had my first real chicken fried steak in a VERY long time. Now, I would be lying if I didn't think the batter was too salty. Things happen and getting something too salty is very easy thing to do. I also didn't care for it being served on top of the fries and red beans with rice. In Texas, there are usually two plates. One for the steak and one for the fixings. Would I try it again? You bet! I was just excited it was made from a real piece of round steak. We will be back. That is for sure. read more

We started with the cornbread--absolutely delicious! It was buttery, maybe a bit on the heavy side, but worth the treat. For our main course, we tried the salmon patties with hash browns. The salmon had a great flavor, though it was just a tad on the dry side. We also got the Roots Bowl, which came with a generous portion of food, all smothered in tasty gravy. It's a hearty dish, perfect for sharing. One must-try here is their fresh salad, grown and prepared in-house--so refreshing and a nice balance to some of the heavier items on the menu. So a mixed review. We were in town for an archery competition and the fellas wanted to eat here - reviews looked good. Pulled up and the place was busy, but not overly busy - just enough to let you know that they are probably a good restaurant. We waited about 20 minutes or so for a table. Our waitress was super friendly and took our drink orders, which came out pretty quickly. Next the food orders with some nice suggestions for meals & sides. They have a cornbread at the table smothered in butter (alpha gal) so I could only eat a bit off the sides. For me, butter on the side would have been a nice option. Then the wait. We waited over an hour. Waitress said something about it coming out shortly and we waited another 15 minutes or so. Still waiting some more after that - but it did finally come out over 2 hours after we walked in the door. The two tables next to our's turned over 2x while we were there - so one couple who just got their meal when we sat, a different couple while we waited, and a third couple who had already ordered and received drinks long ago when we left. The food was pretty good and fresh so it probably wasn't just sitting in the back - we were told a ticket issue - don't believe that though. I thought the portion size of the main dish was a bit smallish - one large fillet with okay size sides. I guess I couldn't really eat the cornbread so maybe I was more hungry than the others. Okay, so still 4 stars. The manager came out and chatted with us and said they wouldn't charge us for the meal, we didn't ask for that so a nice surprise. To me they owned the issue and made it right and I would go back, even though I had initially told the manager I'd not return when we are back next year for the tournament. This place was exceptional! We were met with a small skillet of heavenly cornbread. Then, I ordered smoked meatloaf with loaded smashed potatoes and hash browns. My wife had buffalo chicken Mac-n-cheese, both were wonderful. The praline pumpkin pie was also heavenly. We are only in town for two days and considering another visit tomorrow. I finally tried Hometown Roots. I ate here with family. We all had positive experiences. Service was amazing and our server was attentive. Food was great--I ordered the Mom's Salmon Patty meal. Hubby and I visited this restaurant on a Saturday night around 5:30pm and it was very busy and we had a 35-40 minute wait which is fine because you're going to have that anywhere you go on a Saturday night during prime feeding hours. Restaurant had a slight upper scale class feel and was decorated nicely. Also worth noting the bathrooms were spotless. We started out our meal with a couple of appetizers: deviled egg duo and my favorite, triple threat onion dip. Both DELICIOUS. Each table also gets a serving of jalapeño corn bread dripping in butter served in a mini cast iron skillet, it was also very good. For the main dishes we got the catfish over red beans and rice as well as the smoked meatloaf with loaded smashed potatoes and Brussel sprouts. The catfish with red beans and rice serving size is HUGE, I couldn't eat even half. The beans and rice were seasoned wonderfully. The catfish was cooked perfectly, only thing I could say is that it was a little more catfishy than I like, but, still tasty. My husband enjoyed his meatloaf and said everything tasted wonderful and no complaints. I thought the Brussels could have been cooked a little more but I think that's more of a personal preference thing. Service was very good, staff was friendly, and waitress was attentive. Pricing was very affordable and a good value. The only thing I could say negatively is that it did get very loud between 6:00-6:45 to the point that I had to keep having my husband repeat himself because I couldn't hear him. By 7:00 it had died down drastically and all was well:) I look forward to returning to Hometown Roots and trying other options from their menu as they do have have ever changing special menus. read more

After we were seated, we were quickly brought our drinks and some cast iron skillet jalapeño corn bread topped with whipped butter. My husband had an Old Fashioned from the bar and he was pleasantly surprised at how generous they were with the Buffalo Trace bourbon. We both had the fried chicken. A pleasant surprise! It's obvious that this is a scratch kitchen with a delicious, and reasonably priced menu. Those two attributes are hard to find together. The fried chicken was as good as I've had anywhere, being both flavorful and moist all the way through. The Mississippi Catfish had a great flavor as well. Hometown Roots is a local joint that has the best food. They always have seasonal menu. The special dishes this time were PEACHES! After the waitress brought out a complimentary skillet of cornbread, I started with a yummy drink that looked beautiful and tasted delicious. It was date night for my lady and I. I had heard about how Hometown Roots was the hands down best place to eat in Henderson. Yelp had a lot of amazing reviews and when I had walked by Hometown Roots before, there was a lot of people waiting. Hometown Roots is downtown Henderson in what looks like an old hotel. The wait was legit though as it was about an hour wait. But it was well worth the wait. When we got to the table, we were given a skillet of cornbread and butter. The cornbread had a hint of sweetness and a lot of soft texture. It was a fantastic way to start off the meal. My date and I ordered the pimento cheese fritters. This was an impressive appetizer as fried pimento cheese with some kind of marmalade on top. The pimento cheese was not spicy and full of cheesy goodness. My girlfriend is a Yankee Hoosier so she got subjected to a lot of good Southern food. I had already got her to try grits but tonight she ordered shrimp and grits. I do not like shrimp but I tasted her shrimp and grits and loved the gravy that was mixed in. My entree was the number one best seller of smoked meatloaf according to the owner. My sides were hashbrown casserole and jalepeno cream corn. The meatloaf came topped with a sweet BBQ sauce and had a mixture of gouda cheese, onions, and bell peppers. This was a very impressive meatloaf. The hashbrown casserole was a mix of cheese and some kind of chili powder on it. The cream corn is self-explanatory with pieces of jalepeno mixed in. The hashbrown casserole was all right but I would order the cream corn again. Our waiter took forever getting our drinks and he admitted he forgot about us. But he made it up to us by giving us dessert on the house. My date picked the fried ice cream which was all right. I ended up with the peanut butter chess pie which was a take home dessert out of the necessity of needing milk. Sweet tea was refreshingly sweet and the service was very friendly as it seemed like everyone tried to talk to us. I love BBQ so I would say Homer's BBQ is the number 1 place to eat in Henderson. But Homer's is owned by the same people. So Hometown Roots is easily 1b for places to eat at in Henderson. read more

Cant make reservations its first come first serve, packed on a friday night. Service was great, brought out cornbread right away after our 30 minute wait. Nice to have that when your super hungry. Got the fried chicken, great crunch and moist. Loved the hot honey that came with it. Got two huge pieces and a drumstick. Hasbrown and Sweet Potato casserole were excellent. Downtown 2nd St in the heart of Henderson is this amazing restaurant in the old Soaper Hotel. Everything about this place is nothing short of amazing. From the hospitality right inside the door, to the servers and staff, to the ambiance and food. Nothing about Hometown Roots will disappoint. We were seated in "The Gatsby" room. Loved the charm of the original floor, chandelier and postal box. The offer a wide array of drinks from a full bar to signature cocktails. Their menu is full of good southern home cooking along with specials and some scrumptious desserts. Our fave part was the piping hot, fresh in a small cast iron skillet corn bread and butter. Hubs had the chicken friend steak. He wasn't disappointed and had zero complaints. I ordered the Thanksgiving dinner special. It was Turkey and stuffing balls deep fried on a bed of mashed potatoes. I wasn't feeling it. I'm not a fan of smooshed foods and the taste was off for me. I did eat half of it before I went ahead and ordered dessert - the banana pudding!!! Our waiter Travis was so gracious and attentive. He even wanted to bring me another dish to try even though I hadn't complained about my order. He spoke with the manager and comped my dish. One of my favorite places to dine in Henderson. The staff are super friendly and helpful. They genuinely seem excited to see you. I was blown out of the water by the smoked meatloaf. So good! Fried chicken with hot honey is moist and flavorful. The salmon patty's were good, but I think I was hoping for something a little extra special. We've had several of the sides and while they've all been good, the pimento cheese grits are excellent AF. We also got peach ice cream sandwich sandos.... OH MY! Pleasantly surprised from the curb to the entrance to walking in. The food was great and we look forward to returning. I like the uniqueness of it all. The cornbread was very good. The only criticism is that the green beans were a bit too vinegary and the potatoes were warm and needed salt and pepper. I also had a side salad and it was really tasty. I had regular coffee and it definitely better than most restaurants. They have a coffee bar during the day with baristas. Looking forward to trying that one day. My recommendations - The Bangin' Shrimp for an appetizer (get double the order for a meal) & the Buffalo Mac-n-cheese for your entree! Went to Hometown Roots on Thursday, 03-06-2025. On the bottom of the menu it specifically states that there is an upcharge for using a credit card but there is no upcharge for using a debit card. After the meal, when the check was brought to the table, I took out my debit card and asked our server if there was no upcharge if I used my debit card. She stated that yes, there was an upcharge. I advised her that the menu states that there is no upcharge for using a debit card but she insisted that there would be an upcharge. Since I was going to be charged for using my debit card, I took back my debit card and submitted my charge card on which I receive award points. When leaving, I went by the hostess stand and asked to see a menu. I looked at the menu again to verify what I had read the first time about the credit and debit cards and I was right. I asked the hostess to read the bottom of the menu and she read it and stated that yes, there is NO upcharge for using a debit card. I advised her that management might want to inform their servers of this or remove that statement from their menu. The food was amazing as usual so the reason mentioned above is the reason for 4 stars and not 5. read more

We drove to Henderson to try the restaurant. The interior isn't well designed for a long wait, the building butts up to a catering hall or another business. There is a room the has seating but isn't ideal for long waits. The dining and bar area are crammed so close together you have to yell to hear your party across the table. With the music and everyone it is extremely loud for a restaurant. They seat by party size and not first come first serve which is weird. The food was good and flavorful. I did find it weird they served most food on trays which is fine but our steak and pork chop at the table came in bowls. It is extremely difficult to cut meat in a bowl and should probably be on a flat surface. We would go back if we are in the area but I would go to Henderson just for the restaurant.
